When slung, does the Geissele poke your chest? Please be critical, I don't want to hear 'it's perfect' because it's shaped like a dagger, unlike the AXTS. Could you go the extra smile and swap the G from the pistol into the rifle, and remove the optic so that the mount doesn't interfere with potential poking? Thanks in advance chum.

curious about my new comp installation. its 180 degrees off but it wont affect performance. im just wondering a better way to go about properly timing the device. after backing off and tightening the device up a second time, it ended up going past where i wanted it. not sure how tight i should get it, first time installing.

I wanted a Griffin SN-ATCH with short levers, but not only do you have to buy the short levers for extra moneys and change them yourself, the pivot point is farther from center and the spring is exposed on the back.

So I'm really sorry but I'm a complete noob and I only have my lower so far. I have a few questions.
1) Should I get a chrome lined barrel or stainless steel? I heard chrome is easier to clean but slightly less accurate. However this is a 16" rifle not some sniper rifle
2) Should I get the nickel boron or the titanium nitride BCG? Leaning towards nickel boron because I heard it was only slightly less strong but has way less friction
3) What parts do I need to by for my upper to be done? Just have the upper, dust cover and forward assist. I was thinking barrel, gas block, gas rod, free floating rail, iron sights, birdcage, and maybe handguard?
4) Do I really need a torque wrench for my barrel and stock? Everyone online is giving me mixed feelings
Sorry I'm so retarded, if I completely wasted your time I apologize.

Unless you're going to be using it exclusively as a match rifle off either a bench or bipod, get a something-lined barrel (QPQ is ~90% as durable as chrome while having better accuracy potential, chrome is most durable but can hurt accuracy)
>NiB vs. TiN BCG
Either get a plain old phosphate or shell out for a Cryptic PVD. NiB has durability issues and TiN does nothing better than phosphate
>do I really need a torque wrench for my barrel?
If you want it to shoot to its accuracy potential yes. If you just need it to shoot, no. Most handguards come with instructions that don't even mention a torque wrench, but repeatability and preciseness make an accurate rifle.
>torque wrench for my stock?
FUCK no. A good seating by hand with a ~6" or longer armorer's wrench and a little bit of loctite will keep that castle nut from going anywhere, and staking is not required.

How is the Cryptic PVD any better than TiN or NiB? It looks like it's just a combo of the two and some chrome and aluminum spray too.

It's about the same price or cheaper than the NiB BCGs I was looking at so I'll get it if it's truly better $110 is nothing for a BCG unless you wanted me to get the $450 titanium one that I can't afford
>>
>>31437575
>le torque wrench meme
No, using a torque wrench will not magically make your rifle more accurate. All the magic happens inside the barrel assembly, how tightly it is screwed into the receiver is irrelevant to accuracy as long as it isn't so tight it's damaging the receiver, and isn't so loose it wiggles. This allows a wide margin of torque that is easy to achieve without a torque wrench.
>>
>>31437587
>54r
>valid fighting caliber for anything made after 1954
"""no"""
Rimmed case makes it a dogshit-bad choice for semi or full-auto rifles, it's ballistically out-performed by modern .308 loads, and while it works in belt fed GPMG's a rimless, shorter caliber (like .308) is lighter and less bulky for more performance.

>>
>>31437666
Didn't say staking was dumb or not an option, just that it isn't required because there are other methods of accomplishing the same thing (thread locker, witness and mark, etc). Just that most people will be far more comfortable putting a couple cents' worth of threadlocker on and having something that doesn't blemish the castle nut (so it's reusable with no issue) and is completely reversible.

>>31437692

This is their website right? It says $110 for a coated one, but it's $450 for a titanium coated one. I don't think I need a titanium BCG but that shit would definitely never fail
>>
>>31437779
nogun shitposters don't help much either
>>
>>31437792
The phosphate option is $110 not the coated ones
>>
>>31437792
The $110 one is not a PVD coating. In fact it's not even coated at all, it's their basic-bitch Toolcraft nitrided or parkerized. Their NiB is $180 and the cheapest PVD is $250.

Here:

Also, the titanium one is a titanium BCG, not TiN coated. The BCG is actually a low-mass, titanium alloy BCG. Which is why it's $450.
>>
>>31437809
I see, it doesn't say phosphate anywhere on the page and it looks like the same picture as their blemished coated BCG, and it even says "coated" on the link

Can't say I've done anything like that to a buffer tube, but I routinely have to melt fletching adhesive and/or superglue with a propane torch to pull arrow inserts out of thin(ner) aluminum arrows at work.

Doesn't even discolor them.
>>
>>31437932
Hadn't thought of that. Probably would be fine. Definitely overkill though, simple hand tight strength blue loctite should be enough for a castle nut.

Different guy here, but I can tell you this:
>put barrel on, tighten to 35 ft-lbs
>shot 1.3" groups
>remove barrel, reinstall (all parts exactly the same
>torque to 40 ft-lbs
>shoots 1.1" groups
I can not tell you WHY it matters, just that it DOES matter. And can have relatively significant impact on actual real-world group sizes. Maybe it's the <0.00005" crush on the receiver extension changing the headspace. Maybe it's additional, infinitesimally small squeeze on the chamber. Most of the shit that's even possible to change at <300 ft-lbs of torque is so small it'd be impossible to measure the changes without NASA-tier precision instruments.
>>
>>31437892
>Or have no paste pin like it's been

Says the guy who can't manage better than 1" 5-shot groups at 50 yards.

Competition 100m benchrest is normally won with a 10-shot group with a less-than-0.20" CTC. In fact, I've not even placed in the top-20 with a 10-shot .220" group and all the top-10 shooters were under 0.17". And that's in the varmint category (<10x scope, loaded rifle+optics <11lbs)

A fifth of an MOA is huge.
>>
>>31437980
Was the barrel new before the first install? Was it cleaned before the second install/groups? Were the shooting conditions exactly the same for both groups? Was the barrel the same temperature? Unless you controlled for all the possible variables it is not scientifically sound to conclude that the difference in tightness actually caused the group difference.

>>31438026

>>31438070
Go ahead and make one then or stop complaining
>>
>>31438070
Isn't there a /k/ pastebin or wiki that has a guide to babby's first AR?
>>
>>31438049
No/yes/yes/yes/yes
I controlled for all possible variables because I was trying to build a 300m benchrest rifle.
Barrel was not brand-new, had around 500 rounds through it (including proper break-in procedure, which I know doesn't affect accuracy but does affect fouling rate).

Rifle was thoroughly cleaned between every single shot. 5 minutes were elapsed between every single shot. Stated group sizes were average of 10, 10-shot groups fired on the same day at the same range with the same equipment at the same ambient temperature and humidity with barrel temperature being within 3* F extreme spread as measured by an infrared thermometer at a specific, witnessed mark exactly at midpoint of barrel.

I have been building accurate rifles for decades. I know how to make an accurate rifle, even if some of the reasons for WHY what I do works aren't clear. And I'm not alone in this sentiment, every single big-name rifle and pistol accuracy guru/builder will and has publicly said the same shit.

You're missing the entire point of this fucking site. If you google AR15 you get commercial sites trying to sell you shit you'll need to buy in order to build. This entire board is meant to be an interest focused discussion among *like-minded* individuals. What else is this general used for? Just a containment thread for shitposters?

What are you, new to the internet?

>you'll find our whole post chain leads back to "why doesn't this general have spoonfeeding information, spoonfeed me plz"
Because AR's are highly personal preference rifles capable of fulfilling basically any role a rifle can fill, and a mature product with literally hundreds of valid, high-quality components in every category. You could literally write hundreds of pages about the various products and not cover even 1% of them.

That's entirely too much effort for a thread that lasts about 8 hours on average on a website where nobody reads stickies or OP's.

This board isn't about YOU you dense fuck. What happens when some lurker sees a cool picture of an AR15 in another thread. Where's he going to go to find more info? Perhaps this thread would be a reasonable leap, in which case instead of shitting up the thread with questions he can be told to read the OP pastebin and get some quick info about it.

>>31438467
>Pretty much, yeah. This entire website is for entertainment, not information.
No it's not, it's going to shit because people like you use it for that.

Again, you can use overarching statements about the use cases that come up more often. Nobody is coming to fucking /k/ to get advice on their IPSC build. It's first time buyers/builders looking for advice, and a sticky for them could very easily be made. It would also slow down these threads a bit so that the constant shitposting wouldn't be plastered all over the front page 24/7

you can put your trip back on by the way

Wow that sure was fucking easy. All you have to do now is say why and put it on pastebin. Maybe have someone keep it up to date with suggestions from threads. In the time we've spent arguing about it it could've already been started, but God forbid we distract anybody from the memes and telling people to kill themselves.

>>31438693
No, I said that it would be reasonable for someone interested looking at ARs on /k/ to use /k/ to find out more about ARs. If they were interested in a specific AR they'd ask in whatever thread they saw. But it was only an example of something that would reasonably happen. That's why it's a strawman, or do you not know what that is?

Why do you think that is? Looking at the OP I'm pretty sure I know why.

No, it's not. 90% of 4chan traffic is lurkers.

Then you tell them to read the fucking sticky, just like always. This is an integral part of maintaining an internet community.
