wtf would you want it used for?
>>
>>30949015
I'm not him but benchmade's retail prices are fucking retarded and you can buy second hand LNIB for way cheaper
>>
>>30948982
Ebay, backpage, forums..

The used knife market isn't that big unfortunately. People generally keep knives especially if they already shelled out money on it for their collection. It becomes a status item for them at that point.
>>
>>30949015
Get it cheap. As long as the original paperwork is there how will benchmade now it was bought secondhand for warranty purposes?
>>

Also check out the benchmade Facebook group plenty niggas selling in there

To the guy about opinels ring lock, when I was younger someone gave me one of those 10s or 12s and I tried closing it, thought it was stuck and the ring went flying across the room with minimal effort. The lock is not trustworthy, at all.

First knife in S90V and the performance is real. Just got it during my trip to Tennessee so I haven't had an extensive opportunity to use it, but so far I would have to say this the best steel I used to date for sure.

So, how does /ktg/ sharpen their pointy stabbys? I'm looking for the most effective/least autistic method to get and keep a good edge on my knives.

>>30949875
Water stones if you want to take the time, Spyderco sharpmaker works well, lansky works well and if you want something portable that works well and lower cost, work sharp mini.
>>
>>30949905
Yea it's really that nice
>>
>>30949488

I don't understand, how would you have an opinion on how well s90v performs if you haven't used it extensively?

Isn't s90v's primary selling point wear resistance? Wouldn't you have to use it extensively to be able to see how good it was at that?

Lansky is a good sharpening system.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B8IEA4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470950233&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=lansky+sharpeners&dpPl=1&dpID=51Dkw-XpJjL&ref=plSrch

I use this shit. Doesn't make the pretty mirror edges, but it gets them plenty sharp to cut paper, slice cardboard, and decimate apples. Which is most of what I use my knives for.
>>
>>30949875

If you are willing to invest some time up front to learn to freehand sharpen, you can get an extremely sharp coarse (~320 grit) edge very fast with just a Norton India coarse/fine oilstone and some mineral oil.

Guided systems are generally all very slow on a per-knife basis compared to freehandimg, but are easier to learn.

If you want a polished edge, that's a whole different conversation and will involves more of an investment of time ans money.
>>
I get my shits shaving sharp with the unglazed ring of a ceramic pot lid and the spine of a D2 knife. Is it worth it for me to buy a sharpening system? Like is it easier/faster/better in anyway?
>>
>>30948867
What knife is 0p's?
>>
>>30950044
Xt70. I could be wrong though
>>
>>30949997
Is the sharpening kommando back? If so, when storing water stones for long periods, do you just use Tupperware? Also, I'm assuming it doesn't matter if multiple grits are stored together.
>>
>>30950044
Katz avenger boot knife, he got it like a day ago, posted in the last thread
>>
>>30950092

Yeah, I use Tupperware, I add a capful of bleach to prevent any mold issues.

I also started putting up some sharpening videos, including some tutorials, on YouTube at https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCqPiMuZ82IxI9nkWZcpWifg? For anyone wanting to learn to freehand.
>>
>>30950153
Shoulda posted it on k that it was up, would've subscribed already. Found what I'm gonna watch tonight. Thanks for the tip man.
>>
>>30949917
Initial impressions. So far used it for basic everyday tasks and cooking and in cooking I can tell it's working better than my other knives. Once I use it more for about a month I'll see how well it does then I'll sharpen it and see how easy that is.
>>
>>30950044
>>30950093
Yep Katz Avenger boot/dive knife.

It's a Japanese knife company. Feels great in the hand, and is stainless for obvious corrosion resistance reasons.

I'm planning on uploading a review some time in the next few days since YouTube only has like 2 Russian vids on it.

I love it so far and I hope the company continues to make them.

(If you buy one, Make sure you get the non serrated version unless you like serrations.)
>>
>>30950153
Nice.

Also watching your intro to rough particulate stropping.

That accent, are you just French Canadian as fuck?

Thanks for doing the sharpening vids. It's always great to get new information and demonstrations.

I love how easy it is to sharpen opinels. Ten minutes and bam. Sharp as shit.

http://sendvid.com/pp8kc364
>>
>>30950425

That's what happens when you're born in Canada but only speak Italian until elementary school.

That video on coarse particulate abrasive stropping also serves to show you how clueless a lot of sharpening forum regulars are about how long polished edges can last. There are people out there arguing a polished edge will go dull after just a couple of cuts.
>>
>>30950700
Haha just curious. My fathers side is all Acadian, I'm the first generation to speak English in the home instead of French. I'm one of few that don't have an accent similar to yours.

I'll finish your video later, very interested in it. Thanks again for letting us know they're out there
>>
So I want to start doing knife review videos...is the market too saturated? Or is this still a possible career path?
>>
>>30951238

You'll never top nutnfancy so just don't even try. He has a gift to be able to review at levels that mortals can't even come close to, he's like the Eminem of the gear review world. Any of that shit you call a review video that you put out will get shitted on all day so don't even try
>>
>>30951238
Markets too saturated. Could do like sogfag did earlier with the yojimbo clones, but unless you have some sort of hook, or people magically get tired of the current entrenched sources, not likely.

>>30949911
I may have to look into a wave endura then. Or beat sharps to the punch on cutting my own.
>>
>>30951298
Well that settles it then we need to just stop posting any reviews or videos and close the interwebs cause nutin done won the day.

Hey guys, I don't know shit about knives, but I am thinking about starting to hunt rabbit, so I started browsing some knives for that purpose and I'm a bit lost with the selection. I don't even really know what style is appropriate.

Anyone have any recommendations for a knife for small game?
>>
>>30951720
Why the hell was it 150? What steel is it?

>>30951754
You looking for a fixed blade or folder? Cuz there's plenty of options for both. What's your price range and will this see use other than rabbit cleaning?

Folder:
Rat model 1
Rat model 2

Fixed:
Esee model four
Schrade sharpfinger
Boker sanyougo or rhino
>>
>>30951638
>Is this a cheap old knife ?
Yes, but it should be functional.

Imperial was one of the bigger brands back in the 50s-60s, maybe earlier and you could get them at gas stations and other stores.

Not worth much I think, but should be a decent user.
>>
>>30951806
I don't really have a preference on either fixed or folder. Is there an advantage one way or the other?

Around $50 was my initial thought.

General camping/innawoods use probably.
>>
>>30951806
n690.
mostly expensive because snap-on tax but i buy into that shit heavily so w\e
>>
>>30951867
Look through esee and Ontario mainly. If you want something cheap as hell, Gerber. Buck also has the ranger, and I haven't heard much. Also the cold steel finn bear is under 20 and pretty sold. Or go the classic and get a Mora.

I asked folder because they're just easier to carry in pocket and I wasn't sure if you wanted it for other purposes too.

For innawoods and hunting just get a fixed blade, easier to clean, no lock to fuck up.
>>
>>30951867
No reason not to have a fixed blade innawoods. There are some knife applications that would break a folder.

I can attest to the quality of the RAT-1.
>>
>>30951891
Heard that ones similar to vg10 with performance, but a bit harder. Doesn't warrant the 150, but oh well. What's the thickness on the blade? Frame or liner lock?
>>
>>30951931
>>30951944
Thanks guys, greatly appreciated.
>>
>>30950153
you should put up a vid showing your supplies, describing what they do and why you have them specifically, and recommending some or a set of stuff for beginners.

https://www.amazon.com/Smiths-TRI-6-Arkansas-TRI-HONE-Sharpening/dp/B00062BIT4

I'm not too good w/ the 2k/5k stone, so any ideas on best way to use that would be just dandy..
I also have some basic green jewlers rouge that i know nothing about, on a leather scrap strip that i put on the corner of a table to strop across.

I can get my knives prettttty sharp, but not as sharp as benchmades factory edge on a 810 Contego.. so any ideas on how i can improve my game would be great, thanks sharpeninganon

What the fuck is going on with tripcodes?

The past few threads have been contaminated with arguments and shitposting over certain people. I see nothing wrong with wanting to have a name to refer to someone rather than just "anon." You're still anonymous, but at least other anonymooses can refer to others with something.

Considering making my own trip. I was the one that started /ktg/ a while ago and pretty much kept it alive in the first 9 threads, but now I mainly just lurk and ask questions occasionally now that others are getting really involved. I usually skim or just skip the shitposting altogether, but I can't help notice the magnitude of it lately.

Grew up pretty fudd, you weren't a man in my home town if you didn't have a buck knife and a 30-06.

Buck makes really good hunting knives, the 102 is just right for squirrels and rabbits and the like.

thats a nice dagger, not a design i've seen.

Reminds me of the original Cold Steel Peace Keeper, which was underrated imo

Honestly I feel modern 'single edged' sharpened clip point blades have taken the place of daggers when used by diggers, because daggers just aren't as great for utility.

Still, a dagger is always an advantage for combat.

Pic related needs to be brought back.

Everything Harsey and Reeve touch turns to gold
>>
>>30955738
Yeah I hear you on that. My main reason for getting it was for a combat purpose. I won't be making feathersticks or slicing paper with it, I will (hopefully never) be thrusting it into somebodies stomach and/or inner thigh/bicep.

I carry a leatherman that suits my daily utility needs just fine. I can understand people not wanting to carry a knife that isn't dual purpose though. I guess it's just preference.

Good luck finding one though, let alone one that isn't price-gouged due to the knife being discontinued.

I'll do that at some point, though I at least broadly discuss the types of abrasives that are good for shaping an edge bevel vs the types good for setting an apex in my three step method tutorial.

>>30952102

You should watch the video on burr based sharpenimg and replicate in on whichever stone you have around 400 grit.

Only once you can consistently get a knife sharp on a ~400 grit stone using a burr based method should you worry about incorporating additional grits and learning the three step method.

Ar that point the question should be how much push cutting sharpness you need vs slicing aggression in the tasks you use your knife for. Apex grit should be selected based on scope of work.

Is a double-edged clip point superior to both a dagger and bowie?
>>
>>30956826

You should be able to get it to slice newsprint effortlessly and cleanly off the 400 grit side of the tri-hone.

Basically, you can get an edge equally sharp with coarse or fine grits, what changes is the balance between slicing aggression and push cutting sharpness.

This is because the grit determines how large the microscopic teeth at the apex are, and the size of those teeth determines how good the apex is at slicing through things (bigger teeth) or pushing through things (smaller teeth).

I use a q tip. You could use your finger, or just squirt it on for the mustard. Let it sit for about five minutes, let it start to darken them after its got a good color forming then dunk it in the oil.

read on a forum a while back that blood works, so I tried it. It does. Best to use beef blood or pork, or whatever you can easily get ahold of.

If you feel like being edgy you can use your own, but that's a bit silly.

You are correct sir. I couldn't remember which one and figured 50% chance I was right.

So back to talking about knives, I've asked this slot, but my endura is starting to go, looking at the manix2, the native and the pm2 mainly. Also considering just getting another endura, or going with bitchmade and getting a mini grip. Opinions? Suggestions? Call me retarded?

PM2. If money is no object, then the Knifeworks PM2 sprint with CF handles and CPM-M4 blade.

After finally getting my first PM2, I may only buy PM2 sprints and Endura sprints in steels I want from now on.
>>
>>30963210
The Mini-grip is essentially the Delica of Benchmade, at least in terms of size, flagship status, and formerly cost.

I would rather get a PM2 or Manix, just something different rather than something close to the Endura.
>>
>>30963591
Been leaning towards the manic more for price, might spring for a pm2 depending on my next paycheck.
How's the m4 perform on there?

>>30963605
My main issue i have with the grip till Ian is the small liners.

So dark ops is on sale on knife works... and while I want a new edc blade, I could buy the ultimate fighting blade, the dark ops interceptor with patented expander tip.

bladeforums literally every 3rd thread one of these shits with 60-80$ markup. Fucking faggots just buy them to sell them off later at a profit..

And theres like 20 sprint runs with different steels anyways, a new M4 with carbon fiber coming soon.

Dont pay faggots for these.. dont go over 150
>>
Ive got a question. How come so many knives are made so its impossible to take the handles off? i feel like any knife that uses pins instead of bolt screws will just rust because i cant oil under the handle.

Does anyone know how to stop this from happening or why so many people dont seem to mind not being able to take apart their knives?
>>
>>30950153
Looks like a lot of great videos. Just a heads up, your videos (not sure if all of them) seem to only have right channel audio. You probably just have a mono audio source and it gets messed up somewhere along the encoding process.
>>
I picked up a butchers knife at a market for a dollar, but it has an 11 inch blade. Would it be possible to cut the blade down by about five inches to make it more useful for bushcrafting?
>>
>>30967897
Post a picture
>>
>>30963870

M4 is great if you want a steel that has high apex stability (meaning it will strongly resist microscopic apex chipping and rolling in thin sections) and has high wear resistance.

Most steels are only good at one of those two things. It makes M4 pretty versatile since it can be run in very thin edge geometries both at finishes that excel at slicing work (where wear resistance dominates) and at finishes that excel in push cutting work (where apex stability dominates).

If you prefer to run coarse edge finishes at near stock angles and mostly slice ratherthan push cut, and don't keep your knives touched up, you'd be better served by one of the super wear resistant steels like s110v (assuming you have diamond plates to sharpen it on).

>>30967596

I said the Knifeworks sprint run, which is still available directly from KW, NOT the BladeHQ sprint run, which is sold out and bring resold at inflated prices on the secondary market.
>>
>>30967848

Thanks for the heads up, I must have missed the setting to make the audio mono on my video editing software.

I'd love to own an Auto, they get seized by customs if you get caught importing them here though.

I've used a Benchmade AFO and while it was heaps of fun, it was bulky as shit and most of my flippers were faster but seeing as it wasn't mine I didn't get a chance to see if it could be adjusted on the pivot for a bit faster deploy. Is it common for autos to be that thick in the handles?

>>30967734
You talking fixed blade or folding blade? Because if your fixed blade has a gap, what the fuck is wrong with it. With pinned folding blades, it's basically a non issue. Also basic wd40 and compressed air will fix most issues.

Is there a better Kershaw than the S30V Blur?

- That subtle recurve
- That drop point tip
- Super grippy handle
- Easy to clean flowthrough design
- Lightning fast assist opening

It's become my most carried knife over the last few months.

muh blades. favorite edc is probably the bm530, followed closely by the pm2
>>
>>30971127
Have a Blur with the tanto point. The last 2mm of the tip snapped off with minimal force and the serrations are the most useless snag teeth I've seen on a folder. Kershaw/"Ken Onion" really messed up that version. I do like the style of thumb stud, they're more reliable with wet hands than the standard cylindrical. The assist works as positiviely as the only other assisted opener I've tried from CRKT (which has a thumb plate, again, standard stud design sucks).

i looked at a few at the local knife store, i don't remember the models
don't get me wrong, they seem like nice, solid blades, i'm just not sure that i would trust one in the same way i feel i can trust a real emerson
>>
>>30973131
yea. i never had an emerson in my hands but for me the linerlock is, besides the slipjoint, the weakest and cheapest locking mechanism. Its more the price i dont like about the emersons. And their fit and finish isn't the greatest too....
>>
What knife is OP?
>>
>>30973183
>fit and finish
they are in all honesty pretty primitive knives, but the ones i own seem reliable. i've never had a problem with a lock failing or anything like that

Emerson himself comes off as a bit of a blowhard, but he personally stands by his product - http://emersonknives.com/emerson-blog-project/the-fit-finish/

regarding the price: if you buy one directly from emerson, they are a bit costly, but i don't think they're really over priced considering what you get and also compared to other manufacturers

Thoughts on Outdoor Edge?

Was at Ace Hardware looking for reloading supplies and came across some interesting looking "outdoor" knives. Scandi and hollow ground folders with replacable blades, gut hooks, marlin spikes in the backs, etc. Interesting blade steels as well. 420J2? Never even heard of it.

They're pretty cheap and one of the models is scandi grind with 6 replaceable blades and what looks like a Benchmade-esque axis lock. Anyone know anything about these knives or the company?
>>
>>30973574
>420J2
Pretty much the lowest acceptable cutlery steel available. Basically the only good thing about it is fairly good rust resistance.

>6 replaceable blades
Any knife with replaceable blades that isn't a boxcutter is trash.

>>
>>30968575
>seized by customs

FUCKING WHY

>common for autos to be that thick in the handles

depends on the design. some autos use coil springs in the bolster. others have leaf springs under the scales. the location/method of action determines the thickness of the knife but all autos have the potential to be thicker. personally I like it better that way.
>>
