Well it's a fairly loose term. Bowie's original knife was likely closer to a kitchen knife than anything else, IIRC his brother was the one that requested a clip point but the history of all that is so muddled that it's hard to make heads or tails of it.

That's why I'm more interested in the classic representation of a bowie. It's what I think of when I hear "bowie", not a balisong by Benchmade that has a clip point.

>>
what is your opinion on pic related
>>
>>30935040
Used to carry one. Not bad overall, the sheet has solid retention, the clip is easily modifiable to be a retention instead of a belt loop. My only complaint was that it's thin, so if you have large hands it's not the most comfortable. Overall a nice edc fixed blade, light enough to forget about, will fit your hand with a decent level of comfort. One of the few things out of Crkt that I won't readily shit on.

Would recommend if you want an edc fixed blade that is comfy in pocket and on neck.

If you want something different but similar size,

You're good man. In last thread was a nice long argument about why k generally hates/dislikes Gerber, and I thought somebody was trying to stir it again, so my bad there. Kinda on the memes comment. You'll get a decent amount of use out of it, just don't expect much of anything too amazing as Gerber has diminishing returns on relative use as price increases.

It'll serve you fine man.

>>30935271
Boker magnum. Boker plus is good, but magnum is pretty hit or miss. Also s&w.

When you posted those two, my first thought was bet it was a centofante. How's lint buildup and stuff on those? That's my main issue with pin construction. Didn't care for the tenacious line up or delica/endura?

>>30935557
Lint buildup would probably be bad with the wrong clothes, although not as bad as you might think as the blade basically sits flush with the scales but I work in a workshop where I always have access to compressed air and various solvents etc.

I was originally choosing between the Delica and the Centofante and went with the latter due to extra edge for the same weight and more belly in the blade. I struggle a bit with Spyderco's aesthetics and the Centofante eased me into it, 18 months on I'm stoked with it's performance. I went with the Cara Ti because I don't have a Ti knife and wanted to see what it was like for a bit less than an Endura and the Manix to try out the lock it's got, Benchmades are a bit hard to get into Aus for decent money.

Cold Steel actually redeemed their selves with their new knives in cts xhp. Plus their triad lock is still quality. Just a matter of finding a knife that isn't try hard.

Damn pretty knife you just posted. I figured its nothing terrible, but given I carry my endurance as my main, it just happens, so I was curious. Figured compresses air would be the best solution.

Makes sense and I've heard the ti Cara is solid, bit usually hear it compared more to the tenacious/resilience. I've been spying the manic as well for a while as my endura is getting a bit beaten and it's between that and a native. Haven't heard anything bad about the bolt lock honestly. https://youtu.be/QiEps5JLr6w is a pretty nice cover of it as a whole.

Nigger we had this argument yesterday. They're shit, Gerber knows they're shit, but they perform at higher grade than the overall cost so nobody gives a fuck. And as summarized yesterday, k hates Gerber because we aren't Gerber's target audience, and because k does enough searching not to be their niche. And don't go on and tell me how the remix or paraframe is the best knife ever. They're cheap, but they serve a purpose.

>>30936350
For a bit over 40 you could get a Becker necker without scales. https://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-BK11-Becker-Necker-Knife/dp/B001N1CBB6. Solid knife, but only 3 1/4 inch blade.

The 499 is a really good survival knife, good for cutting wood, digging holes, and general heavy duty shit, but it's pretty soft steel which makes it hard to get a great edge on it. Sheath is good, stone is servicable, tie down options are cool. Sheath is super stiff when it's new, have to remove and insert the knife a bunch to get it to stretch out and fit easily.

Also, condition the leather on both the handle and the sheath, use whatever you want but it's good to put something on there.

So, I want a new balisong. An opportunity may arise for me to get a nice one in the $400 range soon, but I'm having a hard time deciding between two competitors:
>HOM Specter Evo
>Benchmade Model 42

Let's start with the stats:
>42: channeled titanium handles, older versions had Sandvik blades and T-latches, newer versions have spring latches and 440c blades
>Specter: titanium sandwich handles, Elmax blade for Evo and S35VN for standard. All have t-latches.

Now the Specter is a newer one and not so hard to find but is one of the top-tier flippers. The 42 has long been discontinued, but is still a great flipper all things considering and since it's older it's also becoming harder to find.

The primary purpose of getting a new bali is for some variety when flipping. I already have a BRS Replicant, so I'm not looking for another BRS (eg Alpha Beast, besides I hate the aesthetics on the AB). I just want a nice flipper with metal handles. It doesn't need to be the best ever as I plan on keeping the Rep just so I can have some variety, and in case I don't like the way the new one flips. I don't care too much about blade materials as I likely won't be using them for EDC, I just want something that won't break when dropped (unlike my Replicant)
I kinda had my heart set on the 42 and its increasing rarity makes it tempting to get now. Jerry Hom is still making amazing balisongs and he may do a Specter revamp later like he did with the Basilisk. Like I said I don't NEED the most amazing flipper and in most people's opinion the Specter beats the 42, but it's always nice to have smooth flipping.

TL;DR, want new balisong, debating between BM42 and Hom Specter
>>
>>30937481
If you can get the benchmade, go for it. Don't know much of balisongs and not a fan of benchmade in general, but the burn of missing out on a rare knife because you passed for something a little more convenient is a known feeling and it's a lasting one. Get the 42, be happy with life.

Most serrations on knives are that useful. So combination blades are kind of pointless, unless you just cut rope all day, but even then a properly maintained blade does better.

Cheap chinese fixed "survival" knife with serrated blade and hollow handle for a small capsule of survival supplies. It was $7 and I needed a new letter opener. Blade feels solid though.

Gerber 410 serrated. 440 steel, plastic of some sort handles. It was a gift so I just use it as a letter opener.

Other than that I only have one other knife and it's a BRS Replicant, light years of quality beyond the other two

Is it a theater made dive knife ? Looks like the square tip was either intentional or the sheath was made after the blade snapped.

Could be a cut down bayonet with a stacked handle added or something ? But it's weird that there's no markings at all.

Anyone else with a little more knowledge ?

Yeah, I just took it off, but there aren't any markings hidden in there. The blade also doesn't budge. Thanks for the input. The closest thing I found to it was a Polish Navy dive knife because of the brass, proportions, and blade shape up until the tip. The gap between the blade and the guard makes me wonder if the blade was ground down from a completely different shape.

Serrations are useless for 90% of shit you do in daily life and combo edges only really reduce overall cutting surface for most people. Unless you cut thick as shit rope all day, but even then, full serrated is better there.

Please quit blaming /pol/ for everything just because your opinions are shit. The angular momentum doesn't mean shit and doesn't even increase velocity to a meaningful degree. It's the same concept as nunchuks, your not putting forth any more strength by having it on a chain. besides, as soon as the ball hits the object it loses all the speed and lays flat leaving you open until you get it up to speed again. at least a mace can block. in theory but realistically wouldn't it be easier to simply swipe the legs with a sword? besides if we really wanna flesh out the conversation into an actual discussion we would have to decide what type of flail it was. They ranged from a ball of iron or steel attached to a stick with rope to a steel handled/wood handled chained spiked ball. It was more of a peasants weapon back in the 15th century anyways. I suppose it could be used to reach around shields but it depends on if it was a buckler or a kite shield. You know if you dropped the trip you'd be an agreeable fellow other Sharps.

So do you get paid by post or (You)'s? fuck off lad. You lost the argument and threw a fallacy out there hoping to get a reply. You failed. :^) i'm not even giving you the (You). I found this trick is pretty effective.
>>
>>30939631
I'm not arguing that other weapons would be better choices at all, simply questioning the method in which the flail was most effective.

Personally for home defense, If I couldn't use a firearm I would use a combination of pepper spray and a t ball bat or nightstick.

Or just a black powder pistol loaded with shot. Which is easily obtained and not very strictly regulated.
>>
>>30939743
Well historically it was effective against demoralized and armored opponents by peasants. It would be used more so against those without a shield I think. Your recovery time hitting a shield would be a huge opening for your opponent.
>>
>>30939769
That's the thing, when dealing with a shield you have the option of wrapping around it, and in the scenero we are discussing it is pretty much assured that the assailant won't have a shield at all, at most perhaps a crow bar and a hi point tucked in their waist band.
>>
>>30939740

>t ball bat with rebar down middle and quick Crete.

>>
>>30939798
A crowbar would be able to swing much faster and recover after a blow faster than a flail. he could also block the flail by simply letting the chain wrap around the crowbar(I know, easier said then done.) and drop to the hipoint and unload. With a polearm you have a longer reach and even the sword would have a longer reach then a crowbar a thief would be using.

Crappy little fixed blade I made. 1084 steel, indian rosewood handle and sheath

The bevels are uneven, my tempering was off and it makes sharpening it very hard, and the 3/16 thick blade with the uneven bevels made it very hard to get a good edge initially. The handle is a bit short and fat for my hands, and I can't really modify that because I have allergic reactions to the dust

Ontario is the standard in the US, although Condor makes some pretty nice machetes and some of Cold Steel's aren't bad, especially since they actually come sharp now. I've been thinking about getting a CS smatchet for a big ol' fuckin' around knife but I have too many of those as is.

>>30940962
Looks neat, although I hate the hump on the back of the blade. A similar hump is the only reason I don't own a Condor kukri. I can't even explain why I dislike that kind of thing, I just do.

Still, I look forward to seeing the final product.
>>
>>30940970
no, crk has always ran his folders low. 56-57 when the card said 58-59 is normal. I had an umnumzaan [from factory] that was barely below 56. (that is a massive fkn difference, rolled on everything. It tested equal with a cheap chinese folder) They had a period when they tried to correct and ran too high after Chris Reeves got uninvolved and his wife took over. Either way, trust me.

>>30940984
its worth it man. He has some stuff hes working on lowkey, but wait til november when he reopens up. I think either today or tomorrow he is going to publicly announce his flipper

>>30941066
nah its not a hump on the back. Its a swedge. Trust me on that. The design leans the blade forward so it gives you 11 degrees of extra cutting force and gives stability to tip. (CPM m4)
>>
>>30941066
he is taking my shit slow since i told him I am not anywhere near in a hurry. I am like last priority. Had an order since feb paid for and just telling him to do on back burner (got too many customs coming in now, I don't plan to use it til autumn anyways. this is the swedge line that you called a hump. Gives a baton rest, and the swedge helps the blade in many ways (also a good firesteel striking spot.

Looks like a Benchmade 239S. S stands for serrated. It's an older BM low-end production balisong with pin pivots, channel Sandvik handles and blade. Serrated balisongs are quite common. If it has a little butterfly with "Bali-Song" or "Benchmade" written across the middle it is likely real. I have never seen a fake BM239, so I doubt it is. If it is real then you got a great deal seeing as the good condition ones go for $100+.

There is another model that is similar to it, the 139, but the 139 has a plain blade and yours is the 239 with what's called a "weehawk" blade, a blade style that is common in balisongs which is basically just a drop point with a swedge. 239's flip okay, better than your average CCC (charming china cheapo, cheap chinese clone, etc) but it's not gonna last long unless you flip over soft surfaces. It'll learn ya the basics but if you really want to get into balisong flipping I recommend a BRS or buying a BM51 on the second hand market.
>>
>>30941207
Shit I shoulda been more clear. The butterfly symbol with the words should be on one or both sides of the blade on the kicker (choil). I believe yours may have been modified at some point as the stock 239's came with almost mirror polished handle and blade, and that looks either rusted, painted, or treated in some way.

Also, the 139/239 was Benchmade's budget model basically. I think it came out with their Bali-Song line soon after they switched names from Pacific Cutlery Corporation (PCC) to Benchmade.

Thanks.

eBay doesn't sell live blade balisongs. I've checked Bladeforums and they hardly ever have them now. JerzeeDevil is the place that I have seen them the most, but lately they've been gone before I can get to them. Anything over $500 stays there for a while because they're usually collectable condition and/or overpriced. Anything $400 or less gets swiped before I can.

It's kind of refreshing to hear that. A lot of people don't know that machetes usually need to be sharpened on arrival and that can throw off aggregate review scores since some people freak out about it like they can't do it on their own.

Finnwolf is a tri-ad lock with a scandi grind. It's an amazing budget knife. Like most if not all Cold Steel folders, very easy to open via wrist-flick for quick deployment.

I did get the fake Yojimbo, but one in collection pic is real.

Fake Yojimbo 2 description:
The G10 isn't as beatiful. The edges of the G10 a little rounded instead of semi-sharp 90° angle. It can open via wrist-flick much easier than real one, but spyderhole is a little too far in the handle to effectively thumb-flick it with ease, which is funny because the fakes' Spyderhole is larger. The compression lock works about the same by the appearance of it, feel, sound, etc, but who knows if it withstands Spyderco's 200lb force tests. Original closes smooth, fake closes too fast, tip of blade hits screw in bottom of handle if closed too fast. Lock-up is very solid, but space between liners and blade is a little much compared to the authentic. With screw placements being a little off, and the blade being very loose once disengaged, with little to no magnetism in the stop pin (pretty sure certain piece is magnetized somewhere, which is what makes a lot of shorter-blade spydercos I own hard to wrist-flick, and is intended to make it difficult for knife to open in pocket) I think that's the majority of the malfunctions/negatives compared to the authentic.

Fake already has a big dent in the edge near the tip. I think $18.97 was a little high for this clone. Can upload more comparisons if interested. Took around 6-8 images comparing them at various angles.

1/?
>>
>>30946355
Fake is left, real is right, if anyone couldn't tell.
>>
>>30946355
Fuck, forgot to mention... The fake's only about as sharp as a brand-new mtech. Maybe slightly sharper. Can't pass paper push-cut test.

And god damn it, fuck uploading the pictures, 4mb is apparently too small for even my print-screened and cropped images on my phone, this is too much damn work. Deal with description-only.

Knives like that are generally best reserved for cutting fruit and steak and things that generally don't fight back.

The SP1 is about $40 on Amazon, it's considered one of the best sub-$50 fighting knives available. There are other options depending on your budget.
>>
>>30946668
*sigh* Damn my honor-bound inability to leave info incomplete due to my forgetfulness to mention shit...
Forgot to mention that hollow-grind isn't as wide/hollow. The tip is nowhere near as finely tapered as the real one, thus the spine is thicker. Because of scale/blade gap, handle is overall wider from spinal-view of knife. Also, after only 20-30 opens/closes, the blade has already developed some noticeable side-to-side play.

Now I'm out. That should be the last of the concerning differences. My conclusion is to just save and buy real one. Not worth the money you spend because of the work required even just to make it competent as the authentic.

The fact that you need an explanation is enough.

Why the fuck would you try to use a melon knife for self defense ? Just buy a locking folder that wont cut your fingers off in the process ? Cheaper and easier than making a contraption, and it wont ruin your slipjoint while you try to fuck around with wire and an angle grinder or weld something.

What are you, 14 ?
>>
>>30947447
I was thinking more of a simple metal ring that i could slip on to the knife. My dad has something like that.

But I could always just slice and dice i suppose, though i didn't exactly plan to use it in combat. And it's not like the blade is all dangly and easy to fold. It sort of "pops" into place.
