Literally doesn't matter.

.223 wylde has the POTENTIAL for marginally better accuracy WITH TRUE MATCH AMMO (not this CBC/IMI "mk262" bullshit). You will never see it with production 5.56, and you won't see it without benching and bagging the gun and having a high magnification optic to reduce aiming error.

Which AR vise block should I get?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NO-M-A-R-AR-15-Upper-Receiver-Vise-Block-Armorers-Gunsmith-223-Barrel-Nut-Tool-/122020863201

or

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gun-Smithing-Tool-AR-Upper-Receiver-Vise-Block-for-223-5-56-Rifle-Repair-/281816338058?hash=item419d900e8a:g:5aUAAOSwVL1WDzRn

The first one is obviously optimized for flat top uppers. The second can be used for both flat top uppers, and those with fixed carry handles. I own an A2 with a flat top upper that I might want to change out some day, but I don't like the idea of a flat top torquing around in there. Ideas?

I tried being /fit/ and I could cut but bulking does nothing. 3k cal. a day gains me 5lbs every two weeks, but as soon as I quit eating at that volume I lose it. So I'm just gonna be thin for a while.

I'm sure there is reptile shows around there and then you can look at the specific snek in person and check its health as well as get a feel for the people selling it.

Alright guys I'm completely fucking stumped.

Got a BA barrel in the mail today and spent the afternoon installing it. All went well, until I dropped a BCG in...it wouldn't close and lock up. The lugs on the bolt seem to hit the lugs on the receiver extension. I took the bolt out of the carrier and dropped it in to make sure it wasn't the key having an issue with the gas tube...nope, it slides back and forth like silk. No catch there at all. Put the bolt back in, sure enough it won't close.

So I take the barrel off, clean it up, clean the threads, examine the little indexing notch on top. Seems okay, not deformed to my eye. Plug barrel back in, check for play, none. Pretty snug. Torque and back off barrel nut a few times, then torque it down for good. Same issue again.

So I back off the nut, torque it again, past the point where the nut indexes with the gas tube, then back it off just a hair so it indexes correctly...now I can get the BCG to engage if I apply a fair amount of pressure.

So I put the upper on the lower, grab the charging handle, pull it back and it won't even move a quarter inch before it binds.

Swapped a few different uppers on a few different lowers, different BCGs, and the problem is with the new upper. Every other rifle upper/BCG/lower combo works flawlessly.

What do? How did I fuck up?
>>
>>30677883
Oh and I checked the barrel extension ramps to see if they line up with the cuts in the upper receiver when the barrel is on and fully torqued, and they seem to me to be damn near perfectly aligned.
>>
>>30677883
>>30677905
pix, sounds like the upper is machined poorly

inb4 'doesn't matter, all recievers are the same' muh milspec dimensions are widely known.

just to fully eliminate the possibility, can you remove the gas tube and install the barrel to make CERTAIN the key isn't hitting the tube cockeyed?

pix are the best thing though, especially pix of the barrel installed in the upper looking AT the chamber from the mag well opening side (dont pin it to the lower to take a pic dummy)

Forgot to mention, I did run the BCG without a gas tube and it wouldn't close.

After working the bolt back and forth manually a bit more, I can now get it to almost close under its own weight when I hold the upper at a 40 degree angle, pull the carrier back, push the charging handle forward and latched, then drop the carrier. But! As you suggested with the upper possibly being out of spec, I see now a very obvious point of wear inside the upper where raw aluminum is exposed.

Should I just get an M&P15 or would I actually be better off building my own? I've heard some debate over this in the past, and I have seen videos on how to build one and it doesn't look any harder than building a computer which I've done.

I have a sister who is extremely anti-gun and she's specifically afraid of the AR-15 death gun assault-type weapon. She thinks nobody should be allowed to have/shoot one.

However, I am nogunz. I've been going to gun shows and renting guns at the range and I like the M&P15 (haven't shot any other AR-15's) but I don't know if I could build my own for the same price and have it actually be better or what.
>>
>>30678061
>>30678062
it appears the carrier is being forced upward in the upper, or that outcropping is too close to the carrier (i.e. bore of the carrier machined wrongly)

you should try to measure it in relation to some other points in the upper and compare with other uppers.... i suspect it might be the upper?

put old barrel back in and test again. im serious. did the gun function before?
>>
>>30678082

>put old barrel back in and test again. im serious. did the gun function before?

It was a virgin upper today, but now I think that's exactly what's happening. It seems like as the bolt begins to engage with the extension, the carrier is striking that surface and possibly knocking the bolt out of alignment which was causing it to not close at all. But as it wears it seems to be improving. The question is, do I just let the BCG and upper continue to pair that way or should I get a new upper?

Steel BCG should not be damaged by aluminum upper...it should continue to file that surface down until it's no longer in the way. But could it be dangerous?
>>
>>30678061
>>30678062
also is this occuring with the upper alone pulled off the lower? or pinned together?

do you see corresponding aluminum being deposited on the carrier in different places other than the one you circled?

check the carrier for that, or look around for a corresponding bottom-located wear mark ramping the carrier up into that part circled in red

sorry for the contrived process, it takes a lot of fucking around with shit to troubleshoot. fucking around and parts swapping every part posible. old barrel included
>>
>>30678099
>Steel BCG should not be damaged by aluminum upper...it should continue to file that surface down until it's no longer in the way. But could it be dangerous?
you'll have a less supported BCG, i'd send the upper back if you can conclude it's actually the cause of the issue. like i just said, swap a lot.

who makes the upper and what model is it?
>>
>>30678108
Aero forged upper. Super disappointed if this thing is out of spec as an Aero lower I've had for some time now has been outstanding.

I could try to take it back to the shop but I bought it a while ago as I began planning this build and no longer have a receipt. Maybe I could get Aero to swap it, but again, no proof that I'm the one who bought it first.

I'm going to check wear on the carrier in a bit here to see if that tells me anything.
>>
>>30678127
you MAY be able to save yourself time by not using a barrel nut (if you can properly support the barrel.

or just install the nut enough to hold the barrel in place but no specific torquing.

as a matter of fact, if you got this from a shop you should take your barrel, bolt, upper, and charging handle over there and see if they'll let you put the barrel on a different upper from a different maker and show them yourself the problem. or another aero upper if you're feeling brave. if it is the upper you might get lucky and find another one that's poorly machined (if that is indeed the issue). that can be good for your case if you are trying to get a refund/exchange

but like i said if you dont torque the nut down hard, you can have it hold the barrel in place to test the issue on a lot of uppers pretty quickly.
>>
>>30678143
I bought the barrel and bolt separately from the upper, but the shop I bought the receiver at offers the full course of gunsmithing services and they specialize in ARs, so I'll most likely swallow my pride and go ask them for help.
>>
>>30678068
Build.

Buying individual parts is cheaper if you look for sales. You're probably going to want to switch out parts eventually so you might as well get what you want to begin with. You'll want the tools required to build anyway because they're necessary to take down the rifle all the way, which you should always be able to do anyway. You'll learn the ins and outs of the rifle quicker if you build. You'll feel proud looking at it if you build.
>>
>>30678153
you don't have to have bought it from them to ask them why it wont fit in the upper that you DID buy from them.

take em your stuff and show em it wont work, i'd doubt they would deny trying to make it right. i am so damn curious about what's wrong. somehow let me know. this shit interests me a lot.
>>
>>30678171

Is there anyone who's actually taken the classic A2 birdcage and improved upon it, specifically for flash suppression.

I'm kind of looking at the KAC M4QD NT4 flash hider, but can't really find any reviews on it. From what I've read BCM, DD, Vltor, Griffin, and the like that make their own version of the A2 don't seem to supress flash quite as well and the advancement of a comp is negligible.

Thinking about getting a flash hider back on my Troy.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Lantac Dragon and the shitmoving it does around me...But hey, when you're near someone it's really shitty as fuck.

I nearly made cry a kid at the range the other day and some old folks just left when they saw the fireballs.

Best by far is still
>using a shitty drill bit to ream out a gas port and being surprised when erryday is a keyholing day as a result.

I'm sure he'll chime in and post the webm of it anytime now

Good looking rail cover for an ALG EMR rail? Thinking of the Griffin Armaments ones but the look like they would be a little too flat.

should I replace my PSA 300 BLK barrel with the BCM enhanced light weight fluted 300 BLK barrel?

I have all the other details of the build in mind and am going to spare /arg/ of that autism

I wouldn't know. Tfw you have a flash hider and 10 30-round magazines being shipped straight to your door.
>>
>>30680815
Life is suffering. Don't even want to finish my AR because it's have to pin and weld my barrel
>>
>>30680559
Everything.
>90% of the weight of a heavy barrel, 0% of the extra stiffness or cooling because it's skinny in the middle and all the weight's at the muzzle
>carbine gas (specifically with the 6920)
>m203 cutout for even worse barrel harmonics
The last point could, potentially, maybe not be a con IF you had an actual m203. But even then they make railmount versions so you don't actually need the notch anyway.
>>
>>30680828
Eh was just wondering about the options out there. I don't feel like I really need them but I like the knowledge that I have options.
>>
>>30680361
The barrel is $150, which is not bad in syrup land. I'm not sure how prices compare down there because it's a completely different world.
>>
>>30676003
Anyone remember that guy on here maybe 3-4 years ago that was hardcore into guns? I am not sure if it was /b/ or /k/ but we got him to make a twitter account. He has like every gun imaginable and we always made him post nude pictures of all his bitches with his guns. I remember he was talking about how he made a million producing porn and lived in Texas somewhwre.
>>
>>30680835
where are flash hiders illegal?
>>
>>30680759
Giddy broke his Raptor by wedging a screwdriver between the notch in the upper and the latch on the charging handle, then jimmying it side to side until it augered out a huge rounded divot in the upper.

>>30680772
>gotta get it to cycle with his autistic H3+ buffer and super extra strength recoil spring, for "reliability"

NYC, entire states of NJ and MA. Conditionally illegal in a feature-count ban state like NYS and CA.

Interestingly enough, brakes don't count as evil scary features.

That was Dr8co. And he didn't make a red cent off it since he literally traded food to crackwhores to pose with his 3 guns and a bunch of airshit. He's also a fat mexican. And he supposedly gave up on the internet once he hit an age where he realized his dick was good for more than peeing while standing.

Doesn't happen with an ALG rail, they've got enough clearance off the barrel they don't get that hot.

Still an ugly rail though.

It's actually possible to toughen up your hands enough to prevent minor burns.

Got my stripped upper, forward assist, engraved dust cover, J-comp, and charging handle on the way. Ordering my barrel, gas tube, gas block and atleast BCG next monday. Then another two weeks after that my rail and MAYBE BUIS if I didn't order those the paycheck prior.
