1. You will notice much in the way of difference between 14.5" and 16". The military uses 14.5 or 14.7 on their M4s. You'll get some extra velocity out of a 16" which will help trajectory and energy at-range (to a small degree in this length difference), but you won't be handicapped by the shorter barrel.

I've never seen a factory weld fuck up a barrel. As long as you buy it from a company that's competent and knows what they are doing (most all of the major ones) you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I literally just put an AR together from scratch earlier tonight, no special tools other than a hammer (and a nail that was small enough to be a punch), my box cutter, and a screwdriver (for screwing on the grip). The forward takedown detent pin was a bitch to get in place.

Would it have been easier if I had the right tools? Yeah, but it's still pretty easy to get things put together overall.

[spoiler]I had a complete upper receiver (bcg, charging handle, forward assist, dust cover, 16" barrel, other accessories), a lower receiver, a lower parts kit (grip, fire control group, magazine catch/release, takedowns), a cheap/generic buffer tube/telescoping stock. Took the better part of the afternoon/early evening to get it put together.[/spoiler]

Of course, if you want to do it right, go drop a wad of cash on some tools.

Are malkoff/arisaka lights really that good? Trying to save some cash around getting my rifle set up for hd and it's getting pretty up there quite fast.

I too was on the fence about going 14.5" pinned and welded but decided to go 16" again because I sold my last upper and changed muzzle devices a few times. It also makes swapping handguards and gas block easier if the need arises.

Personally I don't think you'll notice much difference in handling unless you go with a fucklong flash hider or brake. Go with the 16" unless you want to take your upper into a gunsmith if you ever need to change anything or fix anything or unless you have the confidence to do it yourself without fucking anything up.
