They're really good quality guns and put together right and now that they have a dust cover they're no real downsides.
You also might be able to get something a little cheaper/better if you get a complete upper and lower separate and assemble them but the sport 2 is a great deal for an out of the box gun.

Go to the gun show and get a lower.

You'll need a lower parts kit with a fire control group (triggers, springs, hammer etc.).

You'll need a grip, a stock, and a buffer tube assembly meant for the gas system of your upper.

Just grab a complete upper from PSA, or if you're feeling adventurous Hardened Arms. You'll also need a bolt carrier group, and a charging handle.

Not really other than the hassle of dealing with two parties, the online vendor and the local FFL. It isn't too big of a deal.

If you can find and FFL that will do the transfer for cheap enough, then you can sometimes save $20-$30 by buying online.

I can't really emphasis enough how much I would recommend against a mini-14.
It would be unfair to call the mini-14 a terrible rifle it's just a very much so mediocre rifle.
It uses a neat but outdated and outclassed action, parts of lowish quality that will stand up fine to very light "ranch" use but when it comes to more stressful use its not unknown for things like the gas block to crack under rapid fire, and even after the improved version was released it really isn't a star when it comes to accuracy. Magazines are shitty to find for it and $25+ when they're on sale, not to mention finding magazines for the mini-30.
All of this while being at a price range that's inching up to a Colt Ar-15 which is by all accounts an excellent rifle.

Their is simply no reason to buy a Mini-14 unless you live in a ban state and even you should just save up for a M14. Everything appealing about the mini-14 can be found in other better rifles such as the SKS, AR, AK, and Garand.
Want a simple fudd friendly rifle? Why go with an Mini when you could get a yugo SKS for several hundred dollars cheaper and have a rifle built to stand the test of time that shoots cheaper ammunition at comparable accuracy?
Wan't a Garand action? Why not just get a Garand?
Wan't a modern rifle with great parts support cheap magazines and chambered in 5.56? Why the fuck wouldn't you get an AR?

Theirs all kinds of stuff I could say about the Mini-14 but I think Bill Ruger best said it when he described the Mini-14 as

I inspected the shit out of it when I bought it but missed one critical but very unexpected flaw.
The rifle worked fine for about 1500 rounds and then the action would lock up about half way through extraction and would need to be hammered open against a range bench. After pooring over the rifle it seems there's a chunk missing out of the foremost section of the receiver rails which is causing the bolt to slightly hop off the rails. The chunk has a factory finish over it and not any significant wear and I'm very confused as to why it lasted for so many rounds especially being I bought it used(it's a 2008ish model).
I haven't tinkered with it much because I'm worried about test firing it when the bolt could fully pop off and cause some chaos in the direction of the shooter so it now lives in the back of the safe.
I tried to consult /akg/ for assistance but they shut me down when I admitted I hadn't cleaned the rifle ever. I know not cleaning it's retarded but that shouldn't cause the goddamn bolt to come off the fucking rails.
Mostly my fault for not inspecting it more but I still don't understand why it lasted so many rounds before the problem suddenly appeared.
Still I recommend against even an thoroughly inspect even though QC has improved over the years WASR because as they're going up in price there's no reason to not buy a DDI, an Atlantic Firearms build or something.

Anyways my go to rifle is now a DDM4V1.

I've never bought a brand new gun that had problems but I've seen new guns in gunstores that were unbelievably fucked.
The worst offenders are Cerberus Marlins that had the sights canted in opposite directions, and NIB Kimbers with rust and flaws in the machining. I later found out that marlin wasn't having problems with canted front sights but canted barrels. Not to mention I've held and shot a few Marlins that had horrible furnitre fit and felt like rickety piles of shit. Many of Kimbers stainless models are actually just regular parts without a finish so just bare high carbon steel.
I've also seen a CZ PCR with a fucked finish on the top of the slide. I don't want to create a CZ fanboy shitstorm and I'm seriously considering getting a CZ now but that shit should have never gotten by any form of QC. I would have tried to get a picture but it's a gunstore I like and wouldn't ask that of them so take it with a grain of salt if you'd like.
I don't know If I finger fuck at funstores too much or if I'm a magnet for shitty guns but don't fall for the Kimber and cerberus meme.
