Question: is it a good idea to make a RPK for baby's first rifle? I think they're sexy, but I've never shot an ak platform before and I don't own any rifles (only pistols and shotguns). I also like building stuff myself, but since this is also going to be my first build, I'm probably going to be buying all the parts and just doing assembly. What are some recommendations for a budget starter AK, that isn't a POS?

It'd be baller to get a .308 but the M77's are apparently no longer imported and it's a pain in the cock to find a 308 VEPR. I don't really know anything about the 5.45 or 7.62 cartridges that AK's are normally chambered in. I was hoping for something full power. Probably only going to run 5 or 10 round mags since it'll be shot off a bench (local range doesn't let you shoot any other way).

My problem with 54R is the ammo availability. Cheap surplus sounds great, but I've heard that it's a pain to reload brass ammo for the cartridge, which will hurt the accuracy goal.

I'm not looking for top-tier accuracy, I already have a few bolt guns and I'm looking for something different. But at the same time I'd like to not feel awful when I walk down to check my targets. I'm thinking about 2-2.5 MOA as a reasonable goal for something like this, although perhaps that's not correct? I pull 1-1.5 MOA with my bolt guns, and they'd probably do better with a decent shooter behind them.

The older ones I understand to be not as good though so make sure you are getting a 2015 model. The year number is at the end of the serial number.

I only have 3 complaints about mine.

1. Stock pistol grip isn't great. It's not shit, just not great. You can replace this easily for ~$30
2. The wood is subpar. Nothing wrong with the stock, but the handgrip is very lightweight wood. I think balsa. It looks fine but I'd prefer a heavier wood and I'm gonna upgrade it. Once again a cheap upgrade.

3. It gets hot as fuck after 2 magazines. I don't think this is unique to the wasr though.

You probably want a .308 VEPR. They're generally not hard to find, easier than the 54R.
An Arsenal or Saiga could also shoot that well, but Saigas are much harder to find these days no matter the caliber.

I've fired my friend's AK on half a dozen range trips and want one of my own. Is it best to start with a full sized AK or can I jump straight to a weird one like a pistol+brace build or a Vepr?

Someone had it on this MAK 90 when I traded my SAR-1 for it. I literally traded it for that feature, because it was fudded all to hell when I got it. Generally speaking, the 14x1lh 74 "style" brakes are little more than paperweights.
Unless you get a 14x1 to 24x1.5 adapter and get a proper 7.62x39 24mm 74 type brake, it's more or less junk.
Even then it'll be probably be iffy because of tolerance stacking.

I'd recommend a Damage Industries Comp, they're good and rather inexpensive.

this is due to one of the two buttstock screws being the wrong length. When they import AK's they dont pay attention that one sling screw is shorter than the other, and usually end up using two long screws by mistake. Just take a file to the frontmost sling swivel screw and take off ~1mm, and it will work perfect.

Beercan and krink boosters make for excellent flash hiders due to them increasing backpressure. Less gas goes out the muzzle, so less flash. Becond that, you have to get an adapter and one of those long, pronged hiders that rings like a bell every shot.
