The ak market in America is trash, it's filled with drama and every company has QC issues unless you pay out the ass for some preban ak or chink ak.
Of course you could build your own but for somebody who has never owned an ak and/or doesn't have the know-how of using the hundreds of dollars worth of tools it's just not a viable option. That doesn't mean you are getting a bad rifle, it's just not up to par in terms of quality as the ar market. I love my ak, no hate.
>>
>>30647046
This guy gets it. The AR market is the way it is because of the explosion it experienced in popularity after Sandy vag
>>
Once again, in case you missed the last thread, 5.45 REAR CONVERTED SAIGAS AT FLEET FARM FOR 449. GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN. They also had NPAPs for $400 but I think most places are already out of those.
>>
About how much should it cost to have an AK kit assembled? I picked up a matching Polish kit with a Childers receiver about two years ago with the hope of eventually buying a press and all the tools needed to build it and learn something new, but I've never gotten around to it and kind of just want it built because I'm tired of having this nice kit sitting a box in my closet.
>>
>>30647046

What if you get it from a trusted brand? Will you still possible get an unreliable one?
>>
>>30647278
There is no 'trusted brand" when it comes to Ak's, that's his point. The only thing you could trust is a good builder at this point in time. However you could just ignore all of the bullshit and just buy an arsenal or a wasr or ddi and still get a rifle that is just fine, cants and bad finishes are just the nature of the American ak market.
>>
>>30647301
This, and honestly you're far more likely to get an Arsenal or WASR that has straight sights and a good finish than not.

That said, the AK market is fucking doody right now. I'm very glad I got into ARs when I did.

If you don't mind the extra weight and having to do some simple conversions, then VEPRs in 7.62x39 are a good choice. Especially considering that the price difference between a VEPR and a WASR is very small nowadays. Even without the conversions, the stock gun is pretty damn good.

Get the fuck outta here with that m&p sport idea. Buy the Wasr if your only willing to spend 600$ for an am, if not find a Vepr or do the smart thing and save for an Arsenal. Veprs deliver the quality people want in an Arsenal but won't have some features, are hard to find, and require money to make look like rifle is fine

>>
>>30647775
Buy a wasr if you want an ak, but remember to EXPECT canted sights and maybe a bad rivet or two. You will get a functional, accurate rifle(I got a pre10/63 wasr10 and it came with canted fucking everything, I was pissed. Took it to the range and it out performed my m&p at 100 yards. but thats probably because I'm used to ak sights)
BUT, if you are just looking for a rifle period you might want to go with the m&p just because the overall quality will be leagues better.

>>30647788
Do this only if you have the money, it's not that much but the rifles you posted are both budget rifles and I assume you aren't looking for something over 700.

Wasr or Arsenal. There's two roads to this people... Either buy a wasr and end up putting money into it equal that of an Arsenal or be a fucking adult and save your Sheckels like I did until you have enough for a 107/104. By the time you save up it'll be February and that's when you will start seeing them be imported again anyways.
>>
>>30647606
Hmm. Well with unsquashed rivots they should fix this with a return. Also, I only wanted a plinker for within 100 yards fun.
I'm more worried about the thing blowing up in my hands/falling apart during operation.

IIRC the Saiga handguard bolt goes into the gasblock, but I may be mistaken as I sold mine a while ago.

Carolina Shooter Supply sells a barrel mount so you could put the handguard on a standard AK, you just might have to drill an extra hole in the handguard.

>>
>you will never get cheap Russian-made AKs

>>
>>30647901
Also, no I haven't owned an IP, there's a good reason for that. There are hundreds of stories of these things being just about the worse thing since burning alive while watching your family get raped in front of your eyes. I'm dead ass, don't get an IO, if you want you could watch AKOU4774 on YouTube, they do pretty reasonable torture tests(nothing like smashing it against a tree but like dropping it and casual usage) on the different AKs and they just now started to do the IO.
Can you guess what their first complaint was? Well if you didn't guess it was the fucking front sight being so out of spec you can move it with a snigjt nudge with your Fingers. That's really really really really bad. Just get a wasr if you don't want to spend the money and you will have a infinitely better rifle.

I know you guys get "looking for first AK, what do?" Threads all the time in these generals but I'm going to be a shit cunt and ask anyway.
I'm looking around the $600-800 area for spending, mostly been looking on gunbroker and atlantic, just to get an idea of what I like. I've narrowed it down pretty much to a High Standard, the C39, or an N-PAP. I'm really looking for ones with all wood furniture, full stocks over underfolders, and chambered in classic 7.62x39. I mostly intend on using Iron sights so I'm feeling a little iffy on the N-PAP since I hear the stock works better with optics in mind. I don't know too much about the High Standards and I hear mixed things on the C39s.
Are any of these definitively better than the others, or is there any other AK's out there I should also check out?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what would be better for installing a scope rail to ensure it's level?

1) measure same distance from top of receiver rails at multiple locations along scope rail

or

2) set barrel to horizontal, adjust scope rail to horizontal

I don't have a truly flat surface I can trust, so I'm hesitant to try #2. I would assume the front trunnion ensures the barrel is horizontal with the receiver to within an acceptable margin of error, so I would think method #1 should work. Thoughts?

>>

>I'm really good at counting rounds
If all you're doing is shooting at a range what the fuck do you need bolt hold open for

The point of the bolt holding open is to make it easier to reload either by stripper clips or inserting a new mag.

AKs aren't sensitive to reloading on a closed bolt, rather they were designed for it. A bolt hold open follower doesn't hold the bolt, it just acts as an obstruction which temporarily halts the bolt until you remove the empty mag, where the bolt then closes anyway and not only doesn't hold the bolt open the way you want it to, but damages your followers over time.

Do what you want but if you do so you'll be a huge faggot. Even more so than those fags who tilt AKs to the side to check for an empty chamber with a closed bolt.

They're very rock solid, just under Saigas in quality. One batch apparently had QC issues, but apparently Arsenal will take back your rifle if you encounter them and will unfuck/refinish your gun. And none of the QC issues that were brought up affected the accuracy or reliability of the gun.

Except for the trigger, Arsenal triggers are objectively dogshit. Get an AKT if you get one.

The Saiga during conversion. I've had a few WASRs and a MAK90 and this Saiga had the most fluid and tight action of any AK I've held. They are worth the premium you pay to acquire one. A type 56 or a homemade rifle with lots of QC attention are the only competitors, IMHO.

You can let shellac dry for an hour then recoat it. I found that using an old rag (or sock) applies the shellac much smoother than using a brush. You can also take some super fine sandpaper or steel wool and sand it down between coats. Buff it and it will be Gucci

Mine does have fuckups, I did it in the garage and kept getting little hairs in it. I kept adding coats so eventually most of the flaws got covered up because I figured out I was getting hair and shit in it.

You should do some amber shellac. The differences between poly and shellac is that shellac IMO looks better and more natural, but is prone to chipping. However it can be easily repaired by sloshing some more shellac over the top. Poly is harder but is also harder to repair. Shellac is weather resistant, I think extreme heat can damage it or something but you don't do both.

I'll stick to amber shellac. There is no way to get true RussianRed, so why bother? You simply cannot artificially age shellac 40+years. Rit-dye jobs look like shit. MinWax Polyurethane jobs are distinctive noticible and look like shit. And BLO simply doesn't look right.

Next best thing is stain it the color you want it, better yet, lightly spray water all over the stock until barely wet, dip the stock in the stain color you want, let it dry in the sun for a few days, then proceed to slather that shit in "Transparent Clear" silicone caulking and wipe off all the excess.

I believe that 7.62 AKs used the 800 meter one originally. But it is 7.62x39, anything past 500 meters is entirely useless so just use whatever you like.

I'm trying to collect 1 quality gun for every common US caliber. How much more common is 7.62x39 than 5.45? Twice as common? Ten times as common?
>>
>>30655082
both
>>
>>30655095
Not doing both yet. After 7.62x39 or 5.45 comes 12g.

>ZASTAVA M91 WHEN!!???!?!??!

Never. Century has confirmed this as well as Zastava. With the loss of cheap x54R combined with the wet fart success of the M77 PAP and M90 PAP, they're not interested.
>>
>>30655082
At this point in time 7.62 is more common than 5.45, it will be(unless the import ban on Russia and 7n6 is lifted) more common in a decade from now. And I mean, you're probably just gonna be blasting watermelons anyways so you also get to shoot cheaper ammo with 7.62.
>Tfw will never get cheap 5.45 ever again ;-;

What is plum?

I can't tell if it's the camera or what, but there seems to be 2 distinct types of plum furniture.

One is very matte, frosted almost, flat chocolate rose colored

The other is wetter looking, darker closer to a true plum color

This correct or is it just a trick of the camera?

Pic is of the matte frosted type

Second, Fuck you for demanding it of us.

Third, Fuck you because Fuck you.

Why would I recommend a place I respect and enjoy using to an asshole like you, knowing that you're going to be a demanding and unreasonable asshole about everything?
Why would I want to afflict a respectable business with an asshole of a customer?

It depends. There are a lotttt of variations depending on how they decided to mix the polymer that day. From Almost transparent shiny red to translucent gloss bloodred to matte purple to gloss dark plum to matte almost brown to shiny black to matte black. No two lot numbers look alike, and Tula and Izhmash have their own styles to them.

Should I buy a Vepr Super in .223 or wait for a normal Vepr in .223? All I would do to either is put a 1-6x scope on it, although I'd convert a normal Vepr to standard AKM furniture.

You do understand that the zenitco dust cover replaces the old dust cover right? There is no rail on top of a rail and I never asked for one.

Maryland. AK pistols are legal and so are SBR's, but I'm 19 so I'm shit out of luck with both of those options.
No gifting either, because to own a handgun, you need a "handgun qualification license" and you need to be 21 to obtain one.

>>30657956
Trust me I love my VZ, but since I was a kid I always wanted an AK. There's a LOT less options out there for forends and other parts, propriety mags, etc..
I need to get a different top front rail (probably will end up getting a whole set) that is made of aluminum so I can actually trust it to hold an optic.
>>
>>30657076
The mushroom caps are inside the receiver and these ends look like every front trunnion rivet I've ever smashed, is there a problem?

And what's wrong with measuring off the top of the scope rail? There's a 5±.03 mm difference between that and the top of the dovetail along the length.
