The only source that says he used an SKS is a single random no-name site. Most news outlets are saying SKS now. Here's a snippet from their article about it.

>The Saiga AK-74 is a semiautomatic version of the venerable AK-47. The AK-74 fires a smaller 5.45 X 39 cartridge more like that of the AR-15. Saiga is a Russian commercial company which imports rifles into the United States. The Siaga is at the more expensive end of AK style rifles.

Looked like steel core ammo

5.45mm fits

One report of a guy hit in the arm with small holes

Would also explain how many officers survived and how long it took for some to die; pencil hole wounds through vital organs can leave people alive for some time, but mortal without transplant (if it's possible for such to be transplanted).

Fragmenting high velocity stuff would have killed more if the shots were center of mass.

It yaws after several inches of penetration, and even then, it's only going to cut a hole as wide as its length, which should be almost completely through a person by then.

One thing I don't like about the debit handguard is that it's overly smooth and slick. Between the radius they put on the rail and the paint, it needs some sort of cover I've yet to pin down.

Also the picatinny seems out of spec. But whatever it works, aesthetic. Wanted one meme AK. Picked up pic related off for $30 when I get my mhmm cuckstamp

What, 2+ years ago?

The AK market has gone apeshit.
107s are priced at $1500+ and labeled "out of production" by some people.
It's getting stupid.

That's not to say deals can't be had, but they are fewer and farther between nowadays.

Figured I would ask here instead of creating a new thread, I have a in Saiga 556. I was originally going to cut the barrel down and swap the gas blocks out, now that I alphabet soup approval.

but, after giving it some thought, if i was to shorten the gas block to krink length, switch out the gas tube, and piston, would there be any ill effects to this? I.E cycling issues, or over gassing the piston and slamming it too hard back. thanks in advance.

Make sure you have someone competent working on it. Also, Saiga 223s have historically had 1:10 barrels. Might not be suited to chopping down.

heres a closer look guys. You know whats weird? there was a bit of that red rusty looking shit right at the front part of where the gas block meets the barrel, just like Rob's video where there was all that "rust" but I wiped that shit cause it looked liquidy and it hasn't rusted in the same spot since.. what does /akg/ think it is? some type of sealant?

They have things like Valmet's (a .308 with the tube stock, and a 5.56 with the wood stock,) I've seen multiple MAK-90's there, and so on. In general I'd say there are over 70 different AK's between the stuff hanging from the ceiling and the stuff against the walls.

But you can expect to find other things like artillery lugers, M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, just about any surplus bolt action you can think of, battle rifles up the butt (this fucking place has more pre-ban HK's than they do post-ban's) and the list just fucking goes on.

Stop in there. The place is so big and has been around since the 70's, that their ammo prices can be found low simply because they didn't re-sticker stuff after they got new batches in over the years. And they'll sell you the same box of ammo for the older price. Whatever the sticker says, that's the price of that box.

I know for a fact there are some 7n6 spam cans in there, old Chinese 7.62x39, and so on. I rarely get the opportunity to truly express my enthusiasm for this place, but just trust me. You'll get dizzy when you walk inside.

Would it hurt to fire a Saiga AK hunting rifle that is exactly like it is in pic related? Do you need the grip and/or the magazine to shoot one bullet? We (my friend and I) don't have magazines right now and the grip it came with was a broken piece of shit, but we want to try it out anyway.

It looks like I can just load it by pulling the bolt back, putting the bullet inside the chamber, and letting the bolt snap back hard. Then it will fire if when pull the trigger, right?

alright cool, thanks. We both actually already did fire it; I just asked here to make sure we weren't somehow fucking up the gun when we did it. I was a little worried because of odd stories about guns I'd heard in the past, but my friend was confident that the gun was way too hardy to be damaged by something so simple.

What kind of scared me was letting go of the pulled bolt for it to slam against the chambered round. I wasn't sure if it would just go off right there, without me even pulling the trigger. I guess the bolt snapping back towards the front of the gun is what actually charges the firing pin? Because when I just slowly let the bolt slide back over the bullet, pulling the trigger made a dry-firing noise but the round didn't fire. Not sure if the bolt was even all the way closed that time, though - does letting it snap back just lock the breech, while the firing pin is charged anyway by pulling the bolt back in the first place?

Sorry to be such a nub; my friend and I have never fired anything bigger than a .22LR and his younger bro (who he's tight with) left his Saiga with him while he went to study abroad nearly a year ago. There was no one around and we were just like "we should try firing a real rifle" "hell yeah"
>>
>>
>>30576243
Letting the bolt fall like that isn't any different than racking it like normal. Unless you ride your bolt home.

What's a good AK kit these days? Should I get one with a barrel already installed?

Never built a fun before but I'm comfortable with tools & machining. Planning on making my own receiver or finishing an 80% one

>>
>>30576243
>Because when I just slowly let the bolt slide back over the bullet, pulling the trigger made a dry-firing noise but the round didn't fire.

It sounds to me like you didn't have the bolt all the way into battery. As a general rule, you shouldn't ride the charging handle home, you should pull back, and release, and let the spring do the work. It won't hurt the gun. If you do ride the charging handle forward, push on the back of the charging handle firmly to make sure the bolt is all the way forward.

For an AK-74 5.45x39 ammo is hard to come by and mostly have to be bought online ever since the 7n6 ban. 7.62x39 for an AKM-47 is plentiful and everywhere for cheap

Is that wrong? I thought all AK patterned rifles are designated AKM after the original 47 got phased out for the smaller, lighter stamped version AKM?

Not being a dick genuinely wanna know so I don't look dumb later on.
>>
>>30567652

Yeah especially when it doesn't have a banana clip
>>
>>30576551
Yes actually. Here is a brief summary of the Russian naming scheme with English alphabet characters instead of Cyrillic:
AK (Milled)
AKS (underfolder)
AKM (stamped)
AKMS (underfolder)
AK-74
AKS-74 (side folder)
AKS-74U (krinker)
AK-74M
AK-10[X]

The "47" is actually not used by the Russians, but when referring to an "AK" it is wise to add the 47 for clarity, because "AK" is too vague.

alright, thanks a lot guys. I guess I was worried because - other than it being the first time I've fired a caliber bigger than .22LR - because I've heard that dry firing certain weapons can ruin them (I can see now that it's mostly pistols and rimfire rifles that this happens to). That and because my old friend who was in the Army had told me that an M16 would not work without basically every standard component of the rifle attached. I guess he didn't mean the magazine though.

Looking it up now, I had no idea there were all these moving parts inside the buttstock of an AR15.

>>
>>30577312
I fired it without the grip and it wasn't painful. I mean it kicked pretty hard (can't really compare it to anything since I've hardly fired any guns in my life), but it was comfortable enough to just hold it like a rifle with a straight-grip stock. I'm sure my friend's bro will get it a new grip once he comes back from abroad.

I was honestly surprised by how big/bright the muzzle flash actually was when I shot, what with there still being like two hours of daylight left when I did it.

Thanks for learning me guys

They stopped producing yawing 5.45 for the russian military in 1988, 5.45 is unstable if they do, and is deflected by wind, brush, and pretty much anything it might touch.

commercial 5.45 doesn't yaw only 7n6 which is a outdated design, yawing is not good overall.

You can add 47 to the AK and AKS, but not to the AKM or AKMS. Russians sometimes do use 47 .
