I was thinking about picking up a morakniv heavy duty, just wondering if there were any better alternatives for a similar price.

My uncle gave me this when I got my Eagle Scout. He carried it with him while he was in the Peace Corps in Africa doing humanitarian work.

Is the koi fish specific to the Peace Corps, or is it a generic thing? Generic or not, it means a lot to me.

I don't know why but all I can think of is the bobs burgers episode where he blows 300$ on a single kitchen knife.

Also I have an edge brand 'original bowie' with a stag handle, serial (or whatever mark) 443, made in Germany.

I can't find info on it, such as age or anything, was wondering if anyone could tell me. I got a new sheath with it, and will post pics in a bit. Last owner tried to heat treat it, I think.

It's a nice wide blade, you could always reshape it with a file down to past where the chip is and then reprofile it and have a useable edge.

My grandfather did this all the time to his knives, he was a cheap Frenchman and refused to throw anything away.

You can also get some neat recurve and curve sections in the blade if you only grind on the section of the blade that's chipped.

I've got to retouch the tip of my keychain spydie, chipped it prying off a wiring harness.

I'll post a picture as I do it, probably be a a little rough, but it'll be back to being pokey

For android, just edit the image after you take it. Do anything you want as long as you alter it in some way and save it in the correct orientation. This is also where you can change inage size. The new image should get uploaded correctly. Alternatively, just take the picture on its side to begin with.

Oh well, I guess I'll just stick with a regular knife and mess around with a cheap training balishlong.
>>
>>30503682
If you can find a used Kimura then go for it, but people tend to hold on to them because they were pretty much the only worthwhile thing in between cheap stuff and BM/Spyderco.

Come to think of it, I've heard that you can remove the spring that holds CS's semi-bali shut, you may want to try that. CS's balisongs were actually fairly highly regarded in ye olden days.

Anyone here handle a Master Cutlery FM-491 Skull Shredder? I'm so tempted to order one for home defense but I have to order it online and can't see how it feels.

2. How strong is the part where the blades attach to the grip?

Anyone here able to give some real insight?
>>
>>30504034
What are you on about I was posting seriously, calm your tits autismo.
I'll be fair with you though, it really can't shred skulls as much as the name implies but it holds up to a good bit of wear, just don't do anything unreasonable with it.
>>
>>30503289
Historically, Wenger was slightly lower quality than Victorinox, but more willing to try less conventional designs.

Victorinox bought Wenger some time in the 2000s, so now the quality is pretty much the same. Victorinox just keeps the brands separate.

If you decide to go forced induction (many people do after getting used to the power to weight)... don't go cheap by buying thicker head gaskets to reduce the compression so you can run more boost. Get new lower compression pistons. I've seen so many blown head gaskets on S2000s where the owners were basically being cheap fuckers.

My heavy skinning knife is coming together slowly, will be getting a bit of profile sanding, lot of metal polishing to get the bolsters mirror finished and as a working knife it'll be getting 2-pack poly on the timbers.

This. Always gotta rationalize it.

What ever happened to wanting something simply cause it looks cool?
>>
>>30507933
That came a long way since the last time I seen it. Why heavy though?
>>
>>30509083
Its pretty large (12cm x 4mm blade) for a skinning and prep knife, mostly to get the extra depth on things like pigs, cattle, kangaroos and goats. (Its also fairly heavy with all that stainless and ebony on it!)

The sub-hilt design is mostly there to protect the user, it'll stop your hand slipping down to the blade edge when its covered in all sorts of blood, gore- plus the extensions of the guard bolster which go out over the top of the blade are for when you pinch the blade at its spine for doing shallow cuts and dressing. Kind of like how chefs will grip the blade there, its similar when you're doing skinning of animals.
I've always been fairly mindful of blade safety when it comes to the design and a lot of commercial knives I've been disappointed with

I realize its obviously for display purposes, that doesnt mean it cant be used for real. Have you never heard the term 'functional art'?

The part where the blades are connected to the grip is 416 stainless steel, I'd imagine it's strong enough for me to punch a home invader without breaking. Thoughts?
>>
>>30509318
Glock 42. Recoil is a peach, .380 ACP isn't big but if you really need a gun it's still gonna take the fight out of your enemy fast.

If you want ultra small then go for the Ruger LCP, but the trigger is horrendous and the recoil sucks. I can't pop off more than one shot before I have to set the damn thing down. On the G42, I could shoot it all day with no problems.
>>
>>30510066
i'm looking at the ruger lcp right now, can i customize the parts? could i put better sights, trigger, and put a lazer on it?
>>
>>30510060
Get out. Just get the fuck out. And don't you dare come back.
>>
>>30510096
The trigger and sights are supposed to suck. The trigger is the way it is to compensate for not having a safety and the sights are part of the slide and small so as to not snag.

As for laser, yes! My favorite is the Viridian green laser. It also has the magnet activation so if you put a magnet in your holster, it will activate the laser when you draw the gun.
>>
>>30510107
Fuck you I turned off my trip as the OP said.
>>
>>30510116
thats really cool. i'll be sure to get that lazer, i'm looking at comparable guns with this one and they have some better sights and don't have any snagging problems. can people switch the trigger anyways? are there many cases where people shot themselves with anything any different?

Of course I have, usually from people who buy wallhangers and try to convince everyone that they won't fall apart with a few good shakes.

Pic related is functional art. What you want is crap, and I don't see why you even bothered asking for opinions if you're dead set on buying it.

>416 stainless steel

FFS, at least Buck uses 420HC.
>>
>>30510096
Laser, yes.

I wouldn't change the trigger even though it sucks. It's their way of compensating for the lack of safety. I mean nothing is going to possibly pull the trigger far enough for it to go off unless it's someone trying to shoot something, it's better than having a safety you have to switch off in a hurry and it keeps a smaller form factor.

But yes, a laser is possible and definitely would help, not only intimidation but also ease of aim
>>
>>30510154
I mean the problem with the trigger is that its a DAO and has a ton of travel. You cant really do much besides polish some surfaces and make it less gritty. It will still be long and heavy.

Are you deadset on a .380? You should look into single stack 9mms. Check out the M&P Shield and the Kahr PM9.
>>
>>30510167
...You do realize the number just refers to its grade, and that a lower number doesn't indicate poor quality, but just different properties?

You realize most high end SS gun barrels are made of 416r, right?
>>
>>30510200
And gun barrels make great knives. 416 barely has enough carbon to attain the hardness desirable in a knife.
>>
>>30510170
yeah i'd feel more confident if i could better see what i'll be putting a hole through. i'm reading that the trigger has been recently "improved" with the official custom ruger http://www.ruger.com/products/lcpCustom/specSheets/3740.html

Just as with anything else there isn't really a best, there's just a list of things that you'll want to look for and a multitude of products that have those features. IMO pretty much anything from a manufacturer in good standing is decent, although you'll probably want something at least 3mm thick so if you go with a Tramontina or another thin blade then you'll want something wide like a bolo. Ontario is the standard in the US, but Condor also makes nice stuff. Barteaux made great machetes but Imacasa didn't want to compete so they bought them a few years ago and simply shut them down and now all you can find are used ones.

Not him, but I carry both. There is a big difference in weight between my LM Surge and BM 940. Having a quickly accessible blade is just more convinient than fumbling with a MT and its sheath. My multitool is used for pliers, scissors, and screwdrivers. Worth having a little extra weight to me though, especially seeing how the dedicated blade only adds 82 grams.

Technically it's a spear but it also functions as a knife, saw and a wire cutter.

Yesterday was the first time I took it out to dick around. It was fairly dull, I had left the factory edge to see how it would do, split some kindling with it.

Sharpened it on the stone that came with it at the existing angle when I got home. A reprofile to a smaller angle would help. Tried to make a fuzz stick for kicks and it was useless.

ok. well then my only advice would be start on small projects. monitor your steel while its in the forge. my first knife; hours of grinding and filing an annealed file down to the perfect knife, then i leave it in the forge for too long and burn the carbon out of the mid section. steel burns like a sparkler when you burn the carbon out of it. i was mad beyond belief
pic semi related, my second knife

Should I start with something like a piece of flatbar or cut it to shape first, because I've seen you need to hammer it a certain way to get the tip to rise up right
>>
>>30515879
yeah, who gives a shit? Karambits are meme shite anyway. 100% useless for basically anything.
>>
>>30518022
if you're forging then it makes no sense to cut anything to shape. and the width of the tip will have the most impact on the way the steel changes shape while quenching. the less steel in the tip=better likelihood the shape will change while quenching
>>
>>30517211
That exact knife is sold under several different names. It ain't bad, but it ain't great either. It's meant for stabbing people and it'll do that just fine.

Several people on /k/ have a few flavors of that knife, if you stick around long enough you might see them.

>>

>It's meant for stabbing people and it'll do that just fine.

if it were meant for stabbing it would not have a gentle and steady sweep from tip to pommel. it seems to prefer a slicing motion
>>
>>30518806
>if it were meant for stabbing it would not have a gentle and steady sweep from tip to pommel.

I'm not seeing any sort of sweep from the pommel, the tip of the knife seems to be in line with the center of the rivets. I see a spearpoint with a swedge and an edge that's straight until roughly where the swedge starts.
