First for why do newfags use "meme" as a pejorative?
>>
>>30521968
Because 4chan created memes and therefore hates them. Friendly reminder that Ka Bar is indeed a meme.
>>
>>30521997
>4chan created memes

It's astounding that the generation that brought that word back into common usage doesn't understand what it means or where it came from.

On the subject of benchmade, I've narrowed it down to these few:

>griptillian
>contego
>rift
>bedlam
>or pic related

Thoughts?
>>
>>30522427
All good choices. I started with a griptillian myself. I think the bedlam is something you should get AFTER you already have a few benchmade knives. Even then, an adamas or vicar would be more useful
>>
>>30522728
Thanks for the reply. I already have an espada so the bedlam might be unnecessary. I've messed with the adamas and liked it, just seemed a tad bulky. Kinda leaning toward the pardue or grip just because I can get them for about $80

I may be the only pro-otf guy in this board. But I do LOVE benchmade.
I think the bedlam is an afterthought. Not really a work knife.
I never enjoyed the pardue, sold it pretty quick. Too small and felt a bit flimsy for me.
>>
>>30522829
Yeah I understand the Pardue is supposed to be a very light knife. Guess I'll go with the griptillian.
>>
>>30522888
Well have you looked at the Barrage?
The order I have bought benchmade is this.
Grip
Barrage
Another grip
2 Adamas(s) 1 auto 1 not
1 APB assist
1Bedlam
1 APB auto
>>
>>30522926
Yeah the barrage really doesn't do it for me, it looks like a grip with some grooves in the scales
>>
>>30522986
I like both. There is a significant difference in grip though.
Have you gotten a chance to handle any? Like in a store or whatever?
I got my first 3 from sherpers (by my house)
>>
>>30523006
I've handled the griptillian and adamas plenty but not much else from bm.
>>
>>30523017
Well good luck with your choice. Consider joining a knife group on facebook (inb4 normies)
I joined a few benchmade groups. Great discussions and even greater prices, sometimes you can get stuff for half off!

I like them, just can't justify the price. I'd pay $200
for one tops for a high end one, but Microtech seems adamant on making meme tier knives with 50/50 serrations and a "super cool double blade" for takticool purposes. And the ones that aren't meme tier I like are worth $350+ it seems.
>inb4 paying for how the knife works and material
Yeah, but there comes a point where you admit to yourself that OTF is a neat idea but is surpasses by switchblade type autos which are sturdier inherently by design. Microtech doesn't seem to understand this though...

>>
>>30523371
They have plenty of autos that aren't OTF, but the cheapest is still like $250. I find it strange that they market them as combat blades but have a hard time believing that an OTF lock would last longer in a stabbing or thrusting situation than a framelock or lockback.

Yeah I know. I was new to knives when I got it.
I regret spending so much money.
Mainly because it isn't even good for the tasks I needed it for in the first place.
It's a fighter from tip to toe.
The innovation that went into this blade is clearly noticeable.
It's made for professionals, wearing gloves and entering houses lol.
Should've gotten a ZT or something.

Still: I've abused it like hell and it's holding up flawlessly.

>>
>>30526879
Since they're so huge, places like Bass Pro or Cabela's might carry them, but since those brands are more "tactical" youll probably find more buck, browning, remington and more outdoors type stuff at those retailers. Generally gun stores or gear stores will carry what you're looking for.
>>
>>30526879
>what stores can i find Spyderco knives, Benchmade and Kershaw?

Best bet is a local knife store or a gun store that stocks knives. If you are in the Trenton NJ area I suggest Harry's Army Navy. There is a good knife store in Port Jervis Named JT's if I remember correctly. If you are nowhere near either of the two places I just mentioned, yes Bass Pro has some Benchmade and Spyderco. Be warned though, they have nowhere near the full line and usually sell them at MSRP. Cabelas has actually upped their knife game in the last few years in regards to their inventory. They are the only major chain I know of that carries ESEE as well.
>>

Yup but for less than half the price of the pardue grivory version and only 1/3 of the price of the pardue G10 version.

I'm seriously excited about this knife its very thin and just dissappears as a EDC. And my example has zero blade play in any direction, perfectly centered blade, and is silly smooth/fast to deploy.

9/10 remember though this is not a hard use knife, don't go baton in with it.

Knife grinds from the side.jpg
35KB, 1000x326px
>>30533027
Scandi grind means the primary bevel forms the edge, which means that whoever sharpened the knife in your pic fucked up because I'm seeing a secondary bevel.

Hollow grind, as seen in the first response's image, means that the grind is concave. Flat grind means that the blade itself forms the primary bevel and is can be similar to scandi or have a secondary bevel.
>>
>>30533054
scandi grind in theory doesn't have a second bevel, which means that to sharpen it, you just lay the entire bevel against the stone and whack away. Much easier to sharpen, where a flat grind requires the correct sharpening angle, and will require a blade reprofiling after a few sharpenings.
>>
>>30533054
It's a combination, flat/scandi/saber/chisel have non radiused bevels, hollow and convex are radiused. Scandi grinds are generally considered to be zero grinds, meaning they don't have a secondary bevel(angle change close to the cutting edge) but other grind types can also be used as a zero grind. Each have their advantages and disadvantages although I would say in that picture both the convex and hollow grinds are hugely exaggerated for visual effect.
>>
>>30533075
>you just lay the entire bevel against the stone and whack away. Much easier to sharpen,

Sounds nice in theory but don't chip it.
>>
>>30533027
Scandi is twice as sharp, but rolls twice as easily. There is no " edge " it just goes straight down.

1-10€ knives in nordic hardware stores are all like that. Everyone has 5, theyre disposable, not really meant to be sharpened but that is one of the key features of the scandi, because you can clearly see when the apex is hitting the stone, and the flat angle is large enough to rest the blade on, so you dont need to guess and hold an imaginary angle, you just lay it flat and hone away.

>and is can be

*and it can be
>>
>>30533027
Scandi has only one bevel. The whole cutting edge of the knife is at the same angle.
Hollow is ground with a radis on it, so as it goes farther up the blade it slopes outward.
Flat is just flat but has a secondary bevel at the edge. Its the secondary bevel that does the cutting with the rest of the blade supporting it.
>>30533044
This picture shows all those things well.
>>
>>30533089
Scandis are usually made out of soft steel in disposable knives, they dont chip, they just roll.. and then you hone it real quick like since its easy to do.
>>

>>
>>30533127
Yeah, spyderco tried that with the Nilakka, S30V. And fucking sperge ruined it. They had to redo the knife with a microbevel to stop them chipping. Overrated, but if you're married to the design then Browning and Windlass make pretty much the only decent reasonably priced production models.

I love that a board that'll dickride the longsword shits all over knives with the same handle construction as practically every western blade ever made before the advent of the slab tang crowbar.

But why stick tang when you could full tang?
>>
>>30533417

Also, stick tang is a type of full tang. Full tang is any tang that goes all the way through the handle in one piece, slab tang is the proper term for what many people call full tang.

Recently picked up a Svord peasant knife cause I liked the idea of a "non-locking" (UK laws are dumb as everyone knows) knife that is impossible to accidentally close on yourself.

I wasn't expecting much considering how cheap they are but fuck me it was well below what I was expecting.

The grind was totally fucked, very asymmetrical and all over the place down the length of the blade.

Still having a play about with it does leave me thinking it's too bulky.

I'd love a folding knife with some kind of "grip safety" making it impossible to accidentally close while in the hand.

Sure it's just paranoia, I've never closed a folder on myself, but I'd have more confidence in a tool with such a function for EDC.

What are some good self defense fixed blade knives (preferrably 4"+)? Also what is the best way to carry fixed blades? Are there any advantages of having a tanto over other blades? I've heard they cut better because they're straight like a wharncliffe

the advantage of a tanto blade is its tip strength, not piercing power as many believe. i'd also say it is very different than a wharncliffe. maybe something like this is what you're looking for. i'd belt carry it horizontally for concealment if you're using it for defense.

Why 4"+? The longer the blade, the more motion required to get it out of a sheath. If someone's physically on top of you or clinching with you, trying to pin your arm/hand so you can't draw a knife, a shortish blade (2"-3.5") will be easier to access and utilize. For a small straight blade I would consider:
1. weak side carry, OWB handle pointing towards belt buckle and down. (pic related)
2. weak side carry, IWB, tip down, for weak hand access in reverse grip.
3. weak side carry, IWB, tip down, for weak hand access in forward grip (primarily for punch-type blades like the Kabar TDI knife or the Colonelblades.

I would be concerned about the security of the grip. In my experience thin and narrow handles like on the Spike tend to slide around in your hand more easily than a slightly thicker handle, and I really don't want to ride my hand up onto the edge or to get the knife twisted out of my hand when it strikes bone.

You just have to meet the right girl, be yourself. Don't worry, anon, it'll happen for you.

Oh, tell you about the knife you mean? Oh! Yeah it's my favorite blade, bar none so far. I've gotta growing collection, SpyderCos, Bökers, Buck, Opinel, Kershaw, etc, you name it. Two counter-wound springs pull the chain, the chain is self-lubricating like a dirtbike chain, doesn't matter if it gets dirty or covered in lint from your pocket. Basically will always work. The action is quick, powerful, but won't leap outta your hand by any means. Solid snap feel to it. They offer like four or five (?) blade styles, and u thought this particular one was the coolest looking, but honestly I could've been wrong there on the usefulness front. But happily, I wasn't. I like this blade style so fucking much. I want this blade shape in a big full size fixed Bowie in fact (with top edge tapering towards the point of course, only Bowie concession necessary). The button, I've never hit it accidentally, and I don't have trouble finding it with my thumb to open it close it. Basically perfect. I can find no flaw. I read some review on knifecenter, I think, where the guy sang its praises, said it was the best auto he ever used, and gave it _one star_ because of the price. Best knife. Too expensive. What kind of thinking is that...

For a strictly oh shit knife, a double edge or spear point would be best. Stabbing does more damage than slashing. A tanto is well-suited for piercing as well. I'd recommend a 5-7in blade so that penetrating anywhere on the torso will likely hit an organ or artery.

It's definately not too big for edc.

Also I don't get why people get so particular about something you are only going to use once. Just make sure it's high carbon, plain edge, +5 inches and has a hand guard and remember people are stabbed to death with steak knives more often than anything else.

Any solid recommendations for a knife between 200-100 dollars? I prefer a flip out knife.
>>
>>30539543
You'll probably be looking for Benchmade. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by flip out, but Benchmade has Pretty good knives in your price range. Regrettably I can't recommend any, as mine is still in the mail. But you never see anything bad about them. How large do you want the knife to be? That will dictate a lot
>>
>>30539785
Flip out was a stupid way of saying it, I meant a folding blade. I'm not picky about the length, just want it to be sharp and keep its edge for a long time.
>>
>>30539882
Unless you give more preferences than that no one will be able to give a good recommendation. What are the laws like where you're from? Are autos okay? Are assisted knives okay? Do you prefer something light or are you okay with heavy if it's sturdier?

What kind of styling? Gentleman's knife or tacticool? Do you have blade shape or mechanism preferences?
