I don't have the energy or inclination to be a "gun enthusiast"

I just want something I can leave loaded in my nightstand forever in case some faggot ever breaks a window in the middle of the night. MAYBE take it to a range and put a box through it every couple of years if I feel like I'm forgetting which end the bullets come out of.

Now I've heard some shit that semi-automatic pistols will get fucked up springs if you just leave them loaded for an extended period of time? Like if I had a Glock or 1911 in a drawer, and didn't touch it again until the day I needed it in 2019, it might just go click.

Is that true? Should I just get a revolver for this job?
>>
>>30322208
No it is fuddlore. But if you want something idiotproof because you don't want to train with it then get your pic related. Model 10 with 38sp lets old women kill nogs all of the time.
>>
>>30322245
seconded. A revolver will work with a trigger pull every time with minimal or zero training.

But semis do not just stop working cause of worn out springs, that is not how that works.
>>
>>30322208

Twelve gauge shotgun and an "NRA LIFE MEMBER" sticker on your car.
>>
>>30322334
The tube magazine in a shotgun is under spring pressure too
>>
>>30322334
>"NRA LIFE MEMBER" sticker on your car
That's just askin to have somebody to bust into your house while you're not home.
>>
>>30322344
Springs only wear out when they compress and open repeatedly a fully compressed spring will not wear out
>>
>>30322344
>The tube magazine in a shotgun is under spring pressure too
so? springs don't go bad under constant pressure.
that's not how they work.

Only repeated loading and unloading of a magazine over the course of a few years will kill a spring.
>>
>>30322208

>I just want something I can leave loaded in my nightstand forever
I'd carry it with you when not at home. Most break-ins occur while the residence is unoccupied and you should expect to lose any valuables left at home when this occurs. Additionally, you are more likely to encounter a mugger, carjacker, mass shooter, etc outside of your home in which case a firearm on your person will be the best defensive tool.

>springs
Springs wear out from use, not from compression alone.
>>
>>30322208
Just my 0.02 cents, but owning a firearm and not practising with it will not serve you well of you ever have to use it in an emergency.

I went back to the range about a week ago after a work-induced four months break from shooting. It took me about twenty rounds before I remembered how to shoot accurately and started putting more than a third of my shots on paper at 25 metres.

In a defensive situation, the last thing you want to have to deal with is your own eroded marksmanship due to lack of practice.

TL:DR : If you are serious about owning a firearm for defense, practice (i.e. 50-100 rounds session) at least once a month. At the very least, once every two months.

Provided you practice regularly, you will be able to be proficient with a 9mm semi-auto pistol. Get something that feels good in your hands and comes from a "big brand". I personally love the cz-75 omega, but I guess a glock or smith&wesson M&P would also do the trick.

>>30322208

OP, with common models that have been around a long time, like the aforementioned Glock 19 or 1911, you're fine as far as semis go. Though if the gun has a safety, and you decide to use it (as in a 1911) you have to remember it's there

So if you truly want an "I can't be bothered to give a fuck but want a gun" gun, yeah, a revolver is a safe bet. Especially the newer it is. They're not infallible, but it takes a lot of use for the parts in a revolver to fail (if it's a good one, like a S&W at least), and they can't FTF or FTE, no safety to forget about.

Amongst my ten guns is a S&W Model 10 police trade in I got for $280 from buds a few years ago. It's my nightstand gun for a reason. Stupid accurate, stupid reliable, cheap, and even though newer, better calibers are available now, .38 special has been killing people just fine for most of 100 years

Take a physics class, he's right. I even specifically asked my physics prof about magazines and he confirmed that wear comes from use, that there's no wear on a static spring.

If you want a handgun entirely meant for home defense, then you are not constrained by things such as weight or concealability. Get a big fuckin' magnum, OP. Something like this model 686. Seven rounds of .357 with a six inch barrel. You will find it surprisingly easy to shoot.

> semi-automatic pistols will get fucked up springs if you just leave them loaded

That is physically wrong. Springs wear out from cycling, not a compression state; and if they've been made in the last century or two acquiring a "set" is not a problem.

Shoot for it, pick up a mid-tier .38 Spl revolver and some reliable man-stoppers and call it done. Hell, if you don't plan to carry a .410 or 20 gauge shotgun won't do you wrong.

And no, the springs ain't gonna wear the fuck out, I've seen 1897 and Model 12 shotguns that have seen use every year since run like a saddlebred horse.

>>
>>30322501
Tone policing women and people of color is not okay, check your privilege.
>>
Springs are not damaged by having pressure maintained on them for a long time, it's by constant compression and decompression.

That said, just buy a nice pump shotgun and keep it under your bed/in your closet if all you want is an effective home defense gun. You should still practice with it, or with a handgun if that's what you choose. You can be a responsible trained gun owner without being autistic about it.
>>
>>30322208
honestly, if you don't intend to practice with the gun regularly, you shouldn't buy a gun.
>>
This thread is 75% faggots arguing over who's the bigger faggot, 25% advice for OP
>>
>>30322208
If you're going to buy a gun and never practice with it, how do you expect to be competent if you ever have to use it?

It's not just as easy as point-and-click like vidya and movies make it out to be.

That said, get a Glock 19 or a cheapo revolver or literally anything.

tl;dr get literally anything and practice with it until you're competent
>>
>>30322208
Any .38 special or .44 special should serve these needs, I would recommend a snub. I would keep it loaded with +p ammunition and shoot standard loads at the range.

I just want something I can leave in a tank on my nightstand forever in case some faggot ever comes into my house in the middle of the day. MAYBE take it to a vet and put a dollar through it every couple of years if I feel like I'm forgetting which color it's supposed to be.

Now I've heard some shit that salt water fish will get fucked up gills if you just leave them unattended for an extended period of time? Like if I had a tang or angelfish in a tank, and didn't touch it again until the day I needed it in 2019, it might just go croak.

The nice thing about fish is that you can store it in the freezer for indefinite periods of time until you're ready to eat it.
>>
>>30322208
>Now I've heard some shit that semi-automatic pistols will get fucked up springs if you just leave them loaded for an extended period of time?
This was actually pretty decent quality bait. Just subtle enough.
>>
>>30326487

I get what you're trying to do, but I've had both saltwater and freshwater fish tanks, and that's not a good comparison. A gun can be left unattended for years and be fine the first time it's picked up, a fish tank can't be left unattended for a week
>>
>>30326791
>I want to own something so I can neglect it
It's a fair comparison, time scale notwithstanding.

It's better to have it and not need it, than to not have it and need it.
>>
>>30326856

It's not fair at all. I shot my AK and SKS in January and haven't cleaned them. Next time I shoot them I'll be fine, there won't be catastrophic side effects. In the course of many years, they won't be in as good of shape as they could have been, but even then if I clean them every time hereafter it'll be negligible

No fish tank can be neglected for 6 months. Steel is not living animals
>>
>>30327432
Not the point.

If you're going to own guns, at least do yourself and others the courtesy of being proficient with them.

The argument that the "well-regulated" part of the 2nd Amendment means "well maintained" doesn't hold up if you think just owning guns makes you any good with them. It doesn't.
