If it's a black bear you might be able to get away with it but there's no way you kill it with just one 9mm bullet (unless you brain it, of course). You're more likely to just make it angry.

You should probably go with the AK and just magdump if you see it.

Seriously, man, if you're in bear country, the lightest I'd carry is a .40 FMJ with lots of ass and spunk behind it. Even better would be a 10mm with lots of velocity or a .357 SIG that can launch a 125 grain FMJ at 1500 FPS or a 147 grain FMJ at 1300 FPS. Penetration is what matters against burr, not expansion.

Either way, bears have thick bones, so a 9mm in any configuration is somewhat deficient.

Magnum rounds (.44, .357) might do you well, and the AK could do it with multiple shots, but I'd personally want a full powered rifle cart if I were to be killing bear.
