So in the last thread or whatever some anon suggested that for cleaning the bore after shooting corrosive ammo you should soak a patch with Hoppe's No. 9 and line the bore with it, then plug both ends of the barrel with soaked patches and let it sit for a couple hours

I did that, and then ran a dry patch through, and it came out like this. Is this normal? I ran a few more through and they came out totally clean. I looked down the bore and it was spotless.

I'm just wondering about the color of this patch, really.

I asked this in the QTDDTOT thread but I figure i'd ask here too:

This question will be extremely specific,

I have a
deactivated AK-47 because I live in britbongistan
and I cannot for the life of me put the dust cover back onto it.

I line up the front end of the cover with the small grooves and get the butt of the recoil spring inside the hole at the back, but every time I try and press it down the lock just won't go in the hole, it just pops off at the front end.

How the fuck do I get it on? Baring in mind I can't rack the charging handle. I realize my question might be confusing because I don't know some of the terminology for parts, but this is very frustrating.
>>
>>29834914

Ah, now I see. It's tricky to do for first timers, I'll try not to use too much gun lingo.

The trick is to insert the front of the dust cover into the little wedge you see there, above that metal lip that I circled, but below that metal block thing that the rear sights rests on. Be sure to insert it at an angle (you don't have to go too high).

Then, while applying pressure to keep the dust cover in that wedge, lower the back of the dust cover over that metal serrated button in the rear that fits into the dust cover's back hole. As you're doing so, the button should slide forward a bit against the inside of the dust cover, then pop into the hole.

You don't have to manhandle it, but I'm presuming it's a well built AK deactivation aside. It can take it.

What bothers me about Rob Ski's tests is that they aren't exactly scientific.

While he has provided some useful information--like the difference between forged and cast parts for AKs--it's not fair to generalise the quality control of a company's rifles based on one rifle alone.

Rob does, in fact, generalise one company's rfile as representative of all the rest when he should test two or three before he makes a judgement.

This is not to say that Arsenal's paint isn't shit. Everyone knows that it is. But this kind of rust is something that I've never seen before, either, and leads me to believe the painting didn't cure or wasn't applied correctly.

This was obviously a bad rifle though, through-and-through.

I look forward to what people bring out about the Arsenal rifles in the future.
>>
>>29835307

True, its a 1000 dollar ak. The parts should all fit flawlessly, the trigger should break like glass, and the finish should be gorgeous.

At the same time though, wear was minimal, you could eat off the bore after 1000 rounds, and had great accuracy right out the box at the 300 yards they tested, even with the dead hooker trigger.

Even at its worst batch, Arsenal is brettygud.

>wants an AK that has compatibility with the most common NATO caliber
>doesn't want STANAG mags

I guess this is because if I was getting a 5.56 AK it would be for the SHTF utility of having access to an extremely common, domestically-produced caliber.

And by that rationale I can't get my head around not also wanting to be able to use extremely common, domestically-produced magazines.

But from a collecter or aesthetic perspective, I get it.

Most likely a crap batch for the xm55s, and besides the finish and canting issues it still shot straight and had no odd wear issues. A WASR would probably have canted sights AND off accuracy.

You'd probably have even less issues with a 104 than with the 107 he tested.
>>
>>29836167
A WASR would have been a 2-4 moa rifle with maybe slight cant that did not affect its ability to be zeroed and a ok park job.
The only thing a arsenal has over a wasr is a folding stock, a 90 degree gas port, and the larger threads for the 74 brakes. Hell WASRs normally have better triggers.

>>29836300
Normally the 2 big reasons I hear for getting an arsenal over a wasr (or any other ak really) is 1. Accuracy and 2. Arsenals have a silky smooth actions. What I like about that akou vid is that he shows that wasrs can be as accurate (or close to) as an arsenal and if u bother to polish the friction points of your wasr you can make it feel as smooth as an arsenal. Other than the current batch of 107s having a particularly crappy paint job most ppl don't care for the arsenal paint job anyways. It makes more sense to me to get a wasr and buy ammo then spend the extra 350-400$ on an arsenal. But that's just one tards opinion and if u wanna buy an arsenal then go for it. Only aks I'd ever tell ppl not to buy are the ras47 or the I.O. fuck those guns
>>
>>29836368
I'm sure it's as durable as I'd ever need it to be but I'm guessing the extra 400$ being put into the comp m4 is going towards even more durability

I said that a lot, until I found deals on mags over and over.
After seeing the FDLs skyrocket, figured if I wanted some of the harder to find mags in my stash for less than a fortune, might as well get them when they're available and somewhat inexpensive.
>>
>>29836429

Not gonna lie, I love my slr-107fr, and its even the XM55 batch (thankfully no paint bubbling after mag dumps). Though forking over that extra 400 hurt, even for some of the extra goodies that Arsenals come with.

I can definitely see why someone would get a decent WASR, clean it up a bit, and invest the four hundo in ammo and mags.
>>
>>29836167
> A WASR would probably have canted sights AND off accuracy.
>AND off accuracy.

What makes you say that? There's plenty of video evidence that WASRs perform just like any other 7.62 AK, Arsenals included, when it comes to practical accuracy.

This issue wouldn't be nearly as overblown as it is if the Arsenalfags (and I own one) weren't so blatantly quick to perform damage control with what are not only clear issues, but ones that have long since been known. That kind of frantic, desperate flailing attracts jeering like sharks to blood.

I must have got lucky. I got a wasr in 04 like a month after the awb got lifted. Straight as an arrow and no mag wobble it looked that that 2013 pic of the mag well. The date on the trunnion is 85 so i guess it was old stock that got stock piled during the Clinton ban. It was soaked in cosmoline.

>not buying an AKT for your AKs
But the paint (and the rust hiding under the paint) are just upsetting. Is yours part of the XM55 batch?
>>
>>29836844

If you're really scared about the finish melting, just avoid the xm55 batch until they nail down whether its an issue among all xm55s or not, and be sure to check if all the parts look fitted nicely, like Rob did.

Then you should be good.

>>

The commenter is basically irrelevant other than bringing up the fact that other AKs don't have the bubbling problem after mag dumps but that's what led to Rob linking the video. But you're right, one man's youtube comment is not a valid data point. The vid that was subsequently linked is tho.
>>
>>29836872
Mine is an SLR-104 that I got about two years ago, so I think I'm more than safe. I replaced my trigger with a TAPCO G2 the same day I brought it home. I haven't exactly dumped 5 mags in a row or anything, but the finish has held up well enough. It's by far my favorite rifle, not that I have a lot in my possession to compare it to. I'm still not going to be such a brandwhore that I'll excuse blatant screwups on behalf of Arsenal, though. It won't change any minds, only make the situation more overblown, and, honestly, shouldn't be done if you want to see improvements made.
>>
>>29836616

You can find much better furniture for less. Stuff that is actually in spec, not absurdly soft, and doesn't have color jobs that make your eyes hurt.

Functionally its still excellent, but the guys who did the finish and fitted some of the parts need to be sent to the gulag. Whoever let that rifle out of the factory with rust needs to be purged and his likeness airbrushed out of all photographs.

it can but not likely. the paint will help to keep shit out that would accelerate the rusting, but the issue is that the rust was already on the steel before the rifle was painted. with how easy it is to harm the finish that rust will get worse and worse very fast.

AB 54 serial here, my fit and finish looked, and still looks pretty good.

I've tested my rifle in ways such as mag dumping 10 mags in one sitting, and putting a couple cans of Barnaul through. My rifle still has nothing wrong with it outside of normal scratches and wear from use.

Anybody contemplating a 104 or 107 should probably look for one that's a year or two old. They're perfectly fine.

>>
>>29838971

Depends, mags are cheaper on the 107 side, whereas they're 30+ bucks a pop for the basic ones on the 104. Plus the good Russian surplus 5.45x39 is currently under an import ban by the ATF due to being "armor piercing handgun ammo".

On the other hand, two videos of bubbling finish issues seem to originate from SLR-107s bearing the XM55 mark.

Keep those in mind, check the fit and finish CLOSELY on ALL rifles you look at, and don't overpay. And don't wait too long either, if Hilldog wins these rifles are never hitting the shelves again.
>>

of course, the arugment can be made the other way. get the 107 because you already have mags and ammo.

Bro I don't even hate cats and I don't own any dogs, I'm just saying that cat smell is one of the most unpleasant things I've ever encountered.

>Nah m8, that's just a meme, also you're just as likely to be infected if you live in a rural area or have ever stepped barefoot outside, the super majority of people who are infected don't show any symptoms at all.

>most common parasitic infection on the planet
>lives with the only known host in which the parasite can repoduce and routinely handles said host's feces

Also most people infected with toxoplasma gondii don't show symptoms of toxoplasmosis itself, which is a collection of acute symptoms seen in immunocompromised hosts. The behavioral changes are much more subtle and there's been less study into them, but there's some pretty strong correlation between infection with t. gondii and becoming less risk-averse.

Also I have to imagine that since the parasite's MO is to alter mice brains to make them attracted to the smell of cat urine, a similar thing has happened to you, which is why you're unaware of your home smelling like a chemical spill.

There are a hundred things that I've dealt with that are worse than cat smell. Dog smell is worse than cat smell, and rates in the top 10% of smells.

Unless it's one from that same batch you're probably fine. The only problem is that it appears a batch of them didn't get properly prepped before being finished.

Nah man, scrubbing out butcher shop dumpsters in 115° weather is pretty gnarly, or cleaning corpses and vehicle wreckage off the freeway after accidents (both jobs I was doing before graduating high school btw) but I'll take either over immersing myself in cat-piss-house.

>Fuck me, I wish a wet litterbox were the worst thing I'd ever encountered or had to deal with.
>Thinks I'm talking about "a wet litterbox"
Seriously, you can't smell it because you're immersed in it, but your entire place absolutely reeks of cat piss. It's bad. It doesn't go away. It will remain after you move out.

If you own a cat your place smells remarkably similar to a home containing a meth lab. Which is another thing I'm saying based on personal experience, by the way.

I once housesat for an older couple that had two cats, and they managed to almost completely be rid of cat odor. This was only because they diligently cleaned out the litterbox multiple times a day and used high-quality, odor-eating filler, so it is possible to own a cat, or even multiple cats, without having your house reek of loneliness, failed ambitions, and poor life choices. Unfortunately, every other cat owner in my experience fails to do that, so they constantly live around the pleasant aroma of cat stools and piss.

Real though I mean it's an XM-55 but if I'm kind to it, it'll hold up correct? I was watching the AK unions video and it seemed it bubbled from mag dumping too much but he said it's still in working order so I shouldn't worry too much should I? I'd rather not sell it or have to go through a huge bullshit return process.

>>
>>29840247
Go mag dump your own rifle and see what happens. Arsenal has never been known for its awesome finishes, but this bubbly rusty shit is a new low even for them. It doesn't seem like all rifles are afflicted, even within that batch. Get your gun hot and see what happens.

Also, I have confidence that aside from the finish, the 107 will breeze through the 5000 rounds.

>>
>>29840353

Yes.

If it can handle three 30 round mag dumps without the finish bubbling, it should be okay.

That seems to be the breaking point for any XM55 that has a bitched up finish.
>>
>>29840353
You have to get it hot.

If you're afraid the rifle can't handle rapid-fire, why the fuck did you buy it?

Feeling like you need to baby the gun because you're afraid of fucking it up is as bad as being afraid of shooting it because it's a lemon.

Man up and see if your gun a fucked up, faggot. You'll know within 3 mags.

You remind me of the type of person in these threads who passionately defends their IO AK as being a rare good one only to reveal that it's only had 500 rounds through it.

It takes $15-$20 (depending on ammo) to find out if your $1000+ rifle has an unacceptable issue.

The other is canted a bit too in the front and GB, One is fine and the one i showed is also a bit canted in the GB and front sight, this on looking down it looks like the rear trunnion is canted too but its hard to tell the whole thing looks like its twisting and turning.

>>29837878
It was a AC not sure what was after Ill look after.

>>29837850
I think your talking about the rear sight base and yes it is, the gaps in the side are supposed to be even between the trunnion but this has too much of a gap on the left side so its canted to the right.

>>29837900
>>29838024
Arsenal has had these problems before with both canting issues and shit finishes, believe me, and I'm not sure when they started manufacturing the stamped rifles for anyone but the us and other civilians, arsenal USA dropped news that 107s would be harder to get in 2015.

>>29837800
They wont even try.

Also I would like to mention the HOLY FUCK ARSENAL REPLACE YOUR FUCKING BOXES THEY ARE GOD DAMN LOW GRADE TOILET PAPER BULLSHIT. Ever single box Ive gotten from them falls apart immediately, the finish on there guns is better than the box but not by much.
>>
>>29840761
Strip the finish and repaint
Send it back to Arsenal and make them fix it
Ignore it
Bitch on the Internet
The choices are endless
>>
>>29840761
Send it somewhere to get re-parked and painted. Should cost no more than a couple hundred.

Yes, it's a big deal that Arsenal let their QC slip and you have to pay even more money to fix their fuck up, but it's better than being retarded and selling your $1000 rifle for $700 just so the next guy can get the finish redone and have a NIB rifle with a finish better than the factory for $100 less and a little time.
>>
>>29840798
>>29840850

only started seeing significant finish wear on the bolt carrier recently (about the 3k round mark).

Finish wear on the bolt carrier is essentially unavoidable, the action of the AK is too inherently rough on itself. The bolt stem never stands a chance.

>de-porting the gas tube
Slightly simplified the manufacturing process. The AKM's gas tube/gas block arrangement vents just as well at the juncture.
>and making the dust cover ribbed
Structural strengthening.
>>
>>29841340
>>29841353
More gas and it's an unnecessary step to port the gas tubes. Also ribbed dust covers made them structurally stronger with thinner material. Another neat feature with the AKM is that the dustcover fixes an issue from before where the safeties could go up beyond the receiver and bypass the dustcover
>>
