I BARELY passed N5 when I took it last December, and my goal was to reach N3 by the end of this year. Then when I evaluated myself 6 months ago, I seemed to be ready to take the N3 already, so I tentatively established a new goal of reaching N2 by the end of the year. Just took the N2 practice questions on the JLPT website for the first time, and did leagues better than I ever thought I would. I need to do a full-length practice test to make sure I'm okay as far as time goes, but I think I'm gonna try for N2.

My current hours are over 10000, yes, but I was already pretty good at Japanese 5 years ago and it's not like I stopped watching anime. I don't think I've ever said it's the fastest way to learn Japanese but it sure is one of the easiest ways as it only requires you to watch lots of anime. Obviously not everyone has the time for that and that is fine, they can learn some other way

Originally schools in Japan went 小→中→大 Small→Medium→Large.
小学校 and 中学校 were both divided into 尋常 normal and 高等 upper level.
Later the upper level of middle school (高等中学校) was separated from normal middle school (尋常中学校) and made into its own category called 高等学校 which was inserted between medium and large. That is why it is referred to differently.

Today the Japanese education system works like this:
初等教育 Primary Education:
