Inflation rocketed before unions started making high pay demands as a result of (a) poor monetary and credit-control policy, and (b) a global oil supply shock. Once inflation was high, unions could only be expected to respond to declining real incomes by demanding pay increases.

I don't even like unions - they're essentially obsolete, even if we were to roll back the current legislation that defangs them entirely - but the narrative of just heaping blame on them (perhaps with a sop to some shite about government overspending, and a misunderstanding of the circumstances of the IMF loan.) is tedious.
