I am not prepared for this lads. Good afternoon is one of the only phrases I know
>>
>>78495583
Where did you post "good morning"?

Anyway, you can always try explaining in broken Farsi that you just started learning and don't know much yet. Either way, it's not like it's a bad thing for someone to be communicating with you in such a fashion.
>>
>>78495650
There's a weekly thread on r/languagelearning where people just post whatever they want in their target language. Yeah I know it's not a bad thing for them to answer in farsi but I'm a bit overwhelmed.

Is Russian worth learning? Which non-European language makes the most sense?
>>
>>78497686
Russian's generally worth it for either their classic (and some modern) literature or various technical literature. Or if you want to talk with Russians, though I don't know why you would want that. You could probably use it to get around in the various post-Soviet countries too, though there's a moderate chance that they'll dislike/beat you up in some places.
>>
>>78497686
Makes the most sense how. As in easy to learn? Practical use? Then again, practical use is an imprecise term too. It depends on what you want really.

also why are you looking for a noneuro language?if you intent to travel just go for skandi nations and the dutch since their languages are close to our.

I recomend devoting a little more time to practice.
I startet like 3 weeks ago and have the about the same progress but the vocabulary is very extensive and another year until you have to move sounds like a lot of time but time flies.

Going to try a Spanish movie right now. Probably too early to try one and understand much of anything but I'm tired today and hope it will just give me a feeling for the language. Plus /tv/ said it was a good movie and I've been collecting Spanish movies in my Plex for when I get better

Ok I've figured out the best way to type russian on mac.

On your second screen open texteditor and set the keyboard to russian. Now when you answer on screen 1 it is in English, when you want Russian type into screen 2 and copy it over.

>>

That's for Chinese in general. Not all of it is recognizably Mandarin due to sound changes. 여자 (yeoja) is not phonetically recognizable as Mandarin 女子 (nǚzǐ). Who cares though? Such an odd question.
>>
>>78519813
do Bulg*rians learn Russian in school?
>>
>>78519830
It's optional, in grade 5 you can choose Russian, German, and some other languages (I think French and Spanish?) and study them for 3 years, but usually people choose either Russian, because it's easy, or German. Then in grade 9, you can choose one of those languages again and study it for another 4 years.
>>
>>78519884
what did you pick?
>>
>>78519912
Russian in grade 5, Spanish in grade 9. Ended up learning Russian rather well back then, but now I can just read and understand it since I didn't have any uses for it and forgot all the autismal grammar. Didn't learn when it comes to Spanish since we had only 2 classes a week and the teacher was pretty bad.

Getting started is the hardest part. Once you learn the really simple grammar, it's as easy as learning a handful of new vocabulary every day.

Seriously, as a Spanish speaker you should have no problems transitioning to Persian grammar.

There's also a Spanish movie I saw recently, called Cannibal/Canibal. It's incredibly slow and boring, but since it has little dialogue it may be something nice to watch as a beginner. It also shows a different side of Spain I think.

Just don't expect something exciting.

The other ones I listed are quite enjoyable.

well when speaking face to face I often get muddled up on the other persons words so I have to ask them to repeat themselves frequently, it gets worse if theres background noise or multiple people talking. For movies and tv shows I pretty much require subtitles otherwise I focus too hard on trying to follow the words and lose track of the plot. These are multiplied tenfold in a foreign language
>>
>>78529091

If all goes to plan I will be moving to Poland or Ukraine in within couple of years. I probably won't know which one for at least a year yet but I want to get a head start on learning one of the languages now.

I know that they share a lot of similarities so learning one will be useful even if I decide to move to the other country. Which one should I dive into?

Weird and probably difficult to answer question, apologies. Ignore the flag, I'm English.
>>
>>78532908
Tbh the difficulty of the languages are fairly similar, Polish has many more resources though. As an English person for the time being it's still easier to move to Poland because of the EU but Poland is a little more expensive than Ukraine but for the most part both will give you a good bang for your buck.
Do you have any concrete questions?
t. speak Polish and learned Ukrainian a bit
>>
>>78532908
Polish and Ukrainian aren't that similar. Also the two countries kinda hate each other, so it won't be that easy to get by with Polish in Ukraine and the other way around, though Poland does have a lot of Ukrainians since the 2014 conflict.
>>
>>78532908
Many ukrainians speak polish while few poles speak ukrainian, more resources, less of a shithole, easier to emigrate to

I'd go for polish, but I might be biased.
>>78533199
Seems to me like only eastern poland hates khokhols, the rest of poland and majority of ukraine seems indifferent. Went there a couple of times and had no trouble getting by with polish only, but then again it was pretty close to the border.

>>
>>78536460
Don't do it. The communications becoming tiring and chore-like. Find one serving friend ways to practice.
>>
>>78536460
I can't speak for others but I'm confident that having a penpal would be a disaster for me. I'm simply not normie enough to handle that level of intimate communication.

The only way I think it could maybe work would be if it were via snail mail, once a month or something like that. Even then though, after a few months conversation would probably run very dry.
>>
>>78538587
I genuinely doubt that's true, even abnormies have some normie interest. Surely you'd find *something* to talk about?
>>
>>78539349
>Surely you'd find *something* to talk about?
My main hobbies are chess and birding, which aren't all too common (not to mention that there isn't really all that much to discuss, let alone in a foreign language).

I do sometimes partake in more normie activities, such as hiking and some vidya, but those are more solitary activities (since I only play single player games), hard to really talk about those all that much. Though I suppose hiking wouldn't be that bad a conversation subject if the other person does hiking as well.

Currently studying Polish, I've been looking around studying polish for like 8 years but I started a course a year and a half ago, in the "Polish Institute". I'm of Polish-Jewish descent and my grandparents spoke Polish mostly, more than Hebrew so I feel it's natural.

I'm on an hiatus from the Polish courses currently and I will hopefully start again on October, but I've been looking into reading and listening Polish everywhere pretty much. The thing that makes learning the other easier than learning from scratch is that you'd know what cases are and how they work which are the backbone to slavonic grammar. When it comes to vocab, some of it is similar especially basic vocab but you're not going to be able to have convos if one person speaks ukie and the other polish.

Good question, "-den/-dan" has lots of uses in Turkish and in the example you gave it's meant to give the meaning "from you" like you said there. If you translated the sentence with "nefret"(hate) in mind you would say "I hate you" rather than "I'm repulsed by(from) you".While they have similar meanings in these examples "repulse" is not the same (or as strong) as "hate".If you want to use "repulse" in a similar way the Turkish translation would be "itici gelmek"

Sen itici davranıyorsun.(or just simply "İtici davranıyorsun.") ----> You are acting repulsive.

Twents is a dialect of Low Saxon, which is the descendant of Old Saxon, the language of the Heliand, a book that is older than any Low Frankish/Dutch writings. Middle Saxon was the language of the Hanseatic league dominating an area from the Netherlands to Saint Petersburg and influencing the vocabularies of all the languages spoken in between.

I'm not learning Russian myself (it's in my long-term goals though), but reasons might include:

>the language in general sounds relatively nice
>it has a lot of speakers, most of whom don't speak any English
>it has a very strong internet presence
>Russia is relatively poor, but not extremely so (for example, it's wealthier than China), so it doesn't scare people away as much
>it has some of the best litterature in the world (Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Pushkin come to mind)
>it has some good music (e.g. Viktor Tsoi)
>it's somewhat exotic (especially with its use of cyrillic), but still not too distant (after all, it's still an Indo-European language, specifically a European one)
>Russia is considered by some a "mysterious place" because of how they're always portrayed negatively in the media, so people might be curious about what Russia really is like (which requires being able to speak their language)

C2 level in a year with 30 minutes a day is ridiculous. Just look at that
>Listening is no problem even when delivered at fast native speed
>Can read with easy any text in the language, as long as it's not extremely field-specific (ie you're not expected to understand a physics paper if you don't have a physics background, but manuals, regular textbooks, the "great literature" is no problem)
>effortless conversation with familiarity of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms
>fluent expression, finer shades of meaning, backtracking in such a way that it doesn't show you made a misstake/didn't get something

A year of studying, 30 minutes a day, you're really overestimating yourself, unless you're some kind of genius who has a knack for languages and can remember shit forever when studying it shortly once.

Yeah, I like that as well. It can be a bit boring. I've been doing it while walking or driving to work and that's more enjoyable, but at home if I'm just sitting on the couch it can make me drowsy. I'm averaging progression every other day because I often need to repeat the lesson a few times to really get it. That might just be my own personal retardation though and not the fault of the teaching. I also make flashcards for it pretty often.

I'm excited to get to Spanish 3 because I read it covers a lot of business Spanish.

How long do you think it will take to get through all 5 for you?

Michel Thomas is nice also, I've been kinda filling in the blanks with that at night.
>>
>>78576853
I tried Michel Thomas, the german one, and I couldn't listen to it. You here the spit in his mouth swoosh and every breathe and he doesn't correct the students when they use the wrong word order or pronounce something wrong. Besides that it was good but those things just sorta ruined it for me so I just use Pimsleur and Learn German with Ania.
>>
>>78577014
hear* breath*
I forgot how to English
>>
>>78577014
kek, yeah. The Spanish one is pretty good. He certainly seems to correct everything. I think the quality varies depending on language.

I like the explanations, which is what Pimsleur lacks. And since it can be done without any additional studying, just listening is all it takes, it's good for a supplement.

Pimsleur also pushes you more. I think more ground is covered, it takes more concentration, more effort. I think these things are all supposed to be used in a vacuum with no other tools, but I can't see that working with any of them with any reasonable speed.
>>

I do two Pimsleur lessons a day, I'm on Spanish II. What do you guys use for vocab? I tried Lingvist but quit b/c it teaches you Spain Spanish although I only want to learn Spanish with a Mexican dialect. Memrise is good too but I'm still going through the basics I already know. Any advice?
>>
>>78578610
How long did Duolingo take you? How would you rank it overall?
>>
>>78578651
For vocab I started with Lingvist, but I wasn't getting the benefit of the contextual learning since I didn't know enough grammar yet, so I'm saving that for after Duolingo. Vocab building for now is just Duolingo + flashcards/Quizlet and the few from Pimsleur and Michel Thomas. As soon as I complete Duolingo, then I'm going to go back to Lingvist.

I'm also mostly interested in Latin American Spanish but want to learn the Vos. form anyways.

I think I'm about two months in, so it will have taken three months in total, at ~100xp/day.
Overall... To be honest I think I'd be further ahead if I had ditched it and studied more from my Assimil textbook, but it's fun to use, and the xp+daily goals pushed me to do more. My biggest gripes would be 1) the dreadful pronunciation, and 2) lack of real explanations. As has been said before, it's good as an aid, but probably not as a stand-alone resource

What's /lang/'s way of learning a """meme""" language if you have learned one? Like that mari poster here
Do I just make do with the little resources I have or what?
>>
>>78582817
Seeing as that the only resource available are limited, yes
Maybe you could read some books on the language, I've noticed that most were written in the mid to somewhat late 1900s and I'm not sure if that affects accuracy.

If you want to learn the meme speak really bad you could track down a native speaker and pay them to teach you
>>
>>78568856
from what that list says, most native speakers are somewhere between c1 and c2
>>
>>78582817
What language do you have in mind?

>Do I just make do with the little resources I have or what?
Pretty much, also you simply have to learn to be resourceful. Remember, search engines can be very powerful tools. Even if your language doesn't have a whole lot of online content, if you can just find a single instance of a certain construction/word you're having trouble with, then it can really help tremendously.
>>
>>78583781
How is your Mari doing?

>language in mind
I'm trying to start learning nakota/stoney due to the fact that my friend is stoney and she doesn't speak her language. I thought i could help her and, plus the language just seems obscure which is what brought me into it.

There's only a couple books that outlines the grammar out a bit in that google drive, but i feel there kinda outdated being written in the 50s
>>
>>78583844
It's weird, I feel like I'm greatly improving, but at the same time I'm always encountering new constructions which befuddle me. From what I can tell so far, Mari is a highly nuanced and highly idiomatic language, which causes me to trip up when I'm trying to understand a random sentence sometimes. However, all in all, I'm satisfied with how I've been progressing so far. Given I still have a ton of material left to cover in my textbook, for now I'm focusing mostly on that, and so I don't worry as much about having being able or not to understand a random newspaper article.

>>78584180

>3,200 (2011 census)
wew lad, good luck with that

>but i feel there kinda outdated being written in the 50s
Grammar generally doesn't change that much in a few decades, though in the case of that language it could be that it's been simplified/anglified in recent generations. Otherwise, those books shouldn't be too far off.

Aren't the arab dialects interesting (linguistically speaking) in that certain ones are not mutually intelligible, and thus would be better off being classified as languages than dialects?

I need help. I know my handwriting is shit but can you recognice all the letters I wrote? If not, which ones?
>>
>>78604384
I forgot. I need help from Russian speaker/learner
>>
>>78604384
I did not recognize Ж and Ы at all until I derived their identity from the alphabetic ordering. Not to be mean but if you're over twenty years old you may consider giving up on learning how to write Russian by hand. You probably won't need to read handwriting.
>>
>>78601142
By learning it. Takes 30 minutes, maximum.
>>
>>78605099
Thank you for feedback. Non offense taken. Thing is that was my first try and I did it in rush. I am over 20y old but I wont give up that easily
>>
>>78604384
I'm not a "native" user of cyrillic, so make sure to check with an actual native if you can, but to me your B seems quite weird, and your Ж is recognizable but it's still a bit weird to me. Your Ы is fairly weird as well to my eyes.

As for ф, supposedly the best way to do it in cursive is as if it was "q" and "p" joined together (i.e. they share the same vertical bar).

As far as I know, the little "hook" for Ц and Щ is supposed to be detached from the letter, at least that's the standard way.

All of this being said, I just want to insist that I'm not a native, but rather a learner. I'm just giving this feedback in case no native shows up, I figure it's better than nothing.
>>
>>78605099
I expect that ы is fucked up but I don't really get what is wrong with ж?
>>
>>78605288
Well I did ask for russian learner if no natives shows up and I appreciate your helpfull advises.
>>
>>78605099
>>78605285
I think it's still worth it to learn cursive. Writing stuff yourself by your own hand in a notebook is very helpful for language learning, and writing Cyrillic in print doesn't work nearly as well as writing in cursive.

Also, writing cursive (and reading your own cursive) helps for being able to read italics and different fonts, seeing as some cyrillic letters in italics are like their cursive version rather than their print version (г, и, т, ц)
>>
>>78605375
>I don't really get what is wrong with ж?
It's supposed to be "curved" on the left and on the right.

Basically, a bit like a reverse "c", a vertical bar, and a "c".
>>
>>78605595
Kek, I am retarded

>>78605523
Is it really that much easier to write cursive rather then printed cyrillic? I was thought it was one of the worst thing about russian(from subjective point of view).

>Is it really that much easier to write cursive rather then printed cyrillic? I was thought it was one of the worst thing about russian(from subjective point of view).
Obviously at first it's more difficult. When you're doing it "for real" for the first time (for example, taking notes in your notebook) you'll probably be fairly slow, and sometimes even be forced to write the print version right beside to make sure you understand (because you'll relook at your own handwriting and realize you can't actually read it).

However, if you do it enough, it really doesn't take long to get used to it. I myself have become relatively comfortable writing in cursive. I'm pretty sure I still make some small "mistakes" here and there (especially with how I join some letters together, and the letter н for some reason), but the funny thing is that I'm actually slowly becoming faster at writing cyrillic than latin (because, like most people, I write the Latin alphabet in print, which objectively is a shitty way of writing). And, most importantly, I no longer have any trobule rereading any of my notes (though I still obviously read cyrillic more slowly than I read latin).
>>
>>78606092
I get that but how is the printed version shittier then cursive one. And apparently not only in cirillic but acording to you in latin too. I love printed version of both latin and ciryllic but i don't undesrtand why no one writes in printed cyrillic
>>
Anyone not use pre-made decks because of the poor quality?
>>
>>78607066
Yeah. I make my own as I go. If I find a word I don't know I'll copy it down then check it's translation with Google translate and compare it to an English-Turkish dictionary and copy that down.
>>
>>78607239
Yeah, maybe a hybrid is best of finding a deck and then checking it. I can't believe the amount of shit out there.
>>
>>78607066
I tried looking a few up and they were all shite. My method now is
>words I learn through pimsleur
>words I find I don't know when I'm having a conversation with myself/in my mind and looking those up on wiktionary
>>
>>78607523
Are you the other guy learning Turkish? I know it's someone in the Netherlands. If so how useful are the wiktionary translations? Google translate can be really spotty and I'm just using a random app on my phone for a Turkish/English dictionary so I don't know how credible it is.
>>
>>78607523
I like making flashcards for Pimsleur, but it can be hard to figure out what they say sometimes. I wish there was a transcript available someplace but I haven't had much luck.

Hey guys wanna see amazing cursive cyrillic?
>>
>>78606911
>I get that but how is the printed version shittier then cursive one.
It's slow, and frankly more difficult to write in print than cursive cyrillic. Even if you use the "alternative" letters for л and д, some letters are simply not meant to be written in print, for example щ.

>And apparently not only in cirillic but acording to you in latin too.
Well, technically it's faster to write in cursive latin rather than print. It's just become socially acceptable to write in print for whatever reason, but in Russia everybody writes in cursive, it's "wrong" to write in print, much in the same way that it was "wrong" to write in printed Latin until half a century ago.

Same, but I get there eventually. Google translate, whislt having patchy translations, is good for spelling too (Did you mean ...)

Ever since I've started learning Japanese I can't help but feel that mining in Anki is the best method for vocab. This is obviously made painless with rikaisama, and it made me wonder whether there was any way I could make French flashcards with a similar speed?

I guess doing it by hand is fine too, but I want to be as efficient as possible.
>>
>>78611998
Can you explain what you mean? Mining you mean that you are collecting words and putting them on flashcards? What is rikaisama?

What comes to mind is Lingvist, although it is only available for certain languages. It mines words based on how common they are and teaches you them in that order. Once you have the structure of a language down, it mostly comes down to vocabulary and nuance. Vocabulary can be trained with cards, nuance through film and speaking.
>>
>>78609907
studying card decks works so well, I thought maybe after I learn Spanish I might try to increase my English vocabulary too.
>>
>>78613573
I know lingvist, and I've used it before, but if I turned it on right now, it would only teach me words I already knew.

Mining is simply making a flashcard out of a word you encountered "in the wild". With a deck like this, I would only be learning new words, while with a premade deck I'd have to spend several tedious hours deleting everything I already knew.

Rikaisama is a firefox addon. It's basically a mouseover dictionary for Japanese. The best feature is that it can add words to Anki with a single button-press. I wish something like this existed for other languages, since typing up cards manually is something I don't really enjoy (but I guess it's not that bad, since I can just copy the definitions from Le Grand Robert).
>>
>>78614073
Interesting. Yeah, I have a deck in Quizlet that is just encountered words, another one that is "useful phrases for work" and a few other things like that. Those all get piled into a Long Term Learning folder that I study from with all the other decks (Pimsleur, Michel Thomas, Duolingo).

Lingvist should adapt to you pretty quickly though, if you get a bunch of words right it seems to be pretty good at upping the advancement level. But I understand you are looking for more words you encounter.

The reason I use Quizlet rather than Anki is the card making. I find Quizlet much more pleasant for that.
