Is there advantage to learning kanji by themselves (ex: learning 生 itself and everything it's used for then moving on to the next kanji character)? Study their kanji's radicals.
If they are in kana, go after the etymology (words and kanji they derived from) or the grammar behind the term.

For instance, the word ネバネバ comes from 粘り, it's less abstract to think about it after knowing the second one.

You can even try and make up your mnemonics.
がくんと. "gakun" is an onomatopoeia for a sudden movement. I couldn't find how the word came to be, but I can think of 額, which means frame or forehead. I just think of someone suddenly bumping their forehead and making a sudden movement backwards with the head. There you are.

If the words you compiled are also similar to each other, try and see what radicals differentiate them.
If you compare 持 and 待, one is "to have" and the other "to wait". The "to have" has a hand radical (holding and object you own) and the other has a person 人 radical (a guy standing and waiting). Just beware not to completely rely on these, since 侍 also has the person, but without that extra stroke above it. Ideally you should study the entire kanji to avoid this.

You can only do two things to lessen these problems (but not completely eradicate them):
- Find your performance sweetspot (after waking up, after lunch, before bed, etc.);

Is there a good way to learn Japanese besides Anki?

I've tried learning in the past and I hated using it for some reason. I want to get back into it but I'd rather try something else.

There are other flashcard softwares out there, but they are ultimately the same.
They do give you placebo achievements though, try WaniKani or Memrise.

It says:

Meaning it comes from the same place as 澄む, meaning "to become clear." 澄む can also be used metaphorically, as in 「澄んだ心」, "a clear heart."
Meanwhile, 済む has the definitions:
>4. 気持ちのうえで満足する。気持ちが安らぐ。「君の気が―・むまでなぐってくれ」
To be emotionally satisfied. To have one's feelings be at ease.
>5. 他人に対して言い訳が立つ。多く、打消し・反語の意を表す語を伴って、他人に謝罪する際に用いる。「ほんとに―・まなかったね」「あやまって―・む問題ではない」→済まない →済みません
To have an excuse to give another person. Often used together with a negative or contrary word during apologies.

I think that both of those meanings of 済む come from the 心が澄む, 気が安らぐ meaning of すむ, and when it's used in the negative form すまない or すみません it means that you do not have an excuse for whatever it is you're apologizing for and your heart cannot be at ease.

I think that 済む means the opposite of that. It means "to have a clear conscience," and the "guilty" meaning comes from using it in the negative form..
