to me. Otoko no hito ga miemasu is can be translated like "I see a man" but I would probably have suggested "I CAN see a man" instead. You can use が instead of を when you use that form of verb conjugation IIRC.

Somebody who knows better than me should probably clarify.

Not him, but thanks for clarifying this. I never thought too hard about it, to me it always looked like 見える followed the a similar pattern as other "-eru" forms like 飲める or whatever, and I always heard it in situations where "I can see X" also made some sense as a translation.

学校ではどう教えてるか分かりませんが
公式には「終わる」が本則、「終る」は許容らしいので、どちらを使っても構わないらしいです。
個人的には「終わる」を使った方が無難だと思います。
私はあまりこういったことに精通していないので
もっと説明がほしい場合は、こういった分野に詳しい人(パンツ屋さんとか)に訊いてみるといいかもしれません。

and if you don't speak the language, it can be pretty hard to spot which is the name and which is the surname
especially with those "Bob James" kind of names where both of them are usable as first names

transcription into Katakana is going to be ridiculously off compared to the actual pronunciation, since Japanese doesn't have a lot of sounds present in Hungarian

Japanese Wikipedia has an article on ホルティ・ミクローシュ, with the note "この項目では、ハンガリー語圏の慣習に従い、名前を姓名順で表記していますが、印欧語族風にミクローシュ・ホルティと表記することもあります。" Obviously what Japanese do on Wikipedia is not a great guide to what Japanese do in general, so I Googled (in quotes) "ミクローシュ・ホルティ" - there are far fewer results than the other way around, and many of them are talking about how his name was written in the French order.

Conclusion:
The Japanese write Hungarian names in the Hungarian order.
I don't know about romaji, though. It doesn't really get used that often.
