Japan is pretty great, but only as an outsider playing around for fun. it starts to be pretty awful and soul-crushing when you live there for long periods and have to try and integrate into society unless you dense as fuck.

So I know literally nothing about the Japanese language so excuse my ignorance but I have a question.

Isn't the usage of Kanji just making the language needlessly complicated?

Shouldn't it (in theory at least) be possible to form any words needed by using Hiragana and Katakana.

For me as a native user of the Latin alphabet it just seems very odd to have to be able to know thousands of unique symbols for all kinds of things.

You could write everything in hiragana, but the kanji is supposed to give context and meaning to words, because each kanji means something.

If you wrote ふじさん (Fujisan) it could mean either some person named Fuji (Fuji-san) or Mt. Fuji. That's why Mt. Fuji is written as 富士山 with the 山 kanji (san) giving it context that 富士 (Fuji) is a mountain.

Or something like that. You get the idea.

Adding to this, I think Japanese made the mistake of basing their language on limited syllable sounds (ka, ki ku, ke, ko, etc) so a lot of words end up being homophone.
If I recall, the Japanese didn't have a writing system, so they took Chinese kanji and gave it their own pronunciation. However, they use Chinese pronunciation as well.

To give you another example, rain = 雨 (ame) and candy = 飴 (ame) sound the exact same.

If you said わたしはあめがすきです (watashi wa ame ga suki desu) you could either mean you like rain or candy. If you said that without any context at all, it could mean both things.
Of course, since kanji doesn't exist in real life dialogue, the context is what gives words their meaning.

So if you are talking about weather, あめ (ame) is going to mean rain, and if you're talking about food or so, あめ (ame) will mean candy.

So you can say that kanji actually makes it easier to read things, because the symbol already gives you the meaning, without much need of context.
That and kanji also saves space. わたし = 私

But I'm not really an expert on this, so I'm sure someone could give you a better answer. This is all based on what I've understood so far.

Truth is, it's archaic as fuck but they;re going down with the ship. There have been Japanese since the early 1800s that campaigned for stopping kanji usage but they didn't win. Now it's kind of too late. Post-WWII would have been optimal.

Yeah, but that's every language. Like I said, the context of a conversation is going to give the meaning to homonym words.
As such, kanji is only useful to read, so that's why it keeps being used in text.

There's other reasons too, for one kanji is important for dividing written language to make it easier to read. When something is in all kana it becomes hard to differentiate between words at times since there are no spaces. For instance:

>私は犬と猫が好きです

Notice how the pattern of kanji / hiragana / kanji makes it much easier to tell where each word starts?

There's also the cultural/historical and artistic value of it, as well as the fact that if they switched to not using kanji, everything made before that switch would be unreadable to the general populace within a few decades.

Kanji really isn't that hard to learn, and you learn new vocabulary as you learn it anyways. It's not as much of a big deal as lots of westerners think.
