Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.
>Go back to /a/

We should really petition mods to stop tolerating the /jp/ thread like they used to, since it simply created two dead threads (/jp/ DJTers will say their thread isn't dead, but it simply benefits from /jp/ being a slower board).

DJT belongs on /int/ since it's a language learning thread, and if /jp/ DJTers were able to suck off mods enough to have them let the thread exist, then we can suck them off even harder and with better tongue control to force the /jp/ers to come here instead.
>>
>>72382680
Ehhh, I'm divided. On one hand, we get a more active DJT. On the other hand, we get a tsunami of autists and smug cunts coming our way.
>>
>>72382680
>We should really petition mods to stop tolerating the /jp/ thread like they used to

You are a fucking faggot, you got kicked out of /a/, you should know best how it feels and now you wanna do the same to /jp/, cause you personally dislike it?
Sorry anon but you are a stupid bitch.
>>
>>72382988
Yes, I want to spite the /jp/ DJTers because I do hate them so, the smug cunts. But that's beside the point, since the board policy dictates that a language learning thread is /int/ material, and certainly not /jp/ material, unless you use the same mental gymnastics that those same cunts used on /a/ to convince the mods, such as "we learn to translate VNs and comic books, you see it is integral to this board's culture!! :^)"

It's common knowledge that /int/ is blue pol, instead of talking to people all other the world and discussing things seriously 99% of the threads are variants of ">india >designated shitting streets lmao".
/jp/ has quite a few retards yes, but I personally think DJT is better over there than here.

>mental gymnastics
Certainly true for DJT on /a/, it was offtopic and nothing else, but l can't agree that learning Japanese is not otaku culture.

So just to "spite them" you plan to unleash upon /int/'s DJT a flood of elitist spergs and avatarfags?

I think /jp/ is a more on-topic option for DJT, but I'm glad we have options.
>>
>>72383584
Well then you're quite simply biased if the excuse was wrong for /a/ but right for /jp/. Not only that, but /jp/ regulars hate the thread being there. As for /int/ being blue /pol/, it may has some stupid threads, but it also has ALL LANGUAGE LEARNING THREADS, which /pol/ does not have. I swear it's like you /jp/ DJTers have selective deafness. DJT is a language learning thread, it belongs where all other language learning threads are.
>>
>>72384230
I used to dislike the idea of them being here, but making the thread busier and having autists sperg out for not being able to be on /jp/ anymore sounds entertaining. This DJT has gotten way slow over the past couple of weeks and the last one was a DailyEnglishThread more than anything.

That's nice progress man. Should feel good.
Will probably feel weird shifting to vocab after going RTK. So much easier to remember kanji going through that book than it is with vocab. If only it was that easy for everything.

>>72384214
>anyone could just as easily point to this thread and say the /int/ threads are filled with nothing but insulting /jp/.
That's the thing: you really couldn't. Hell, /jp/ is rarely mentioned here at all. On the flipside, those threads on /jp/ really are full of that sort of stuff to the point that you'd have to cherry pick threads to avoid it. If that's what anons enjoy, all the power to them.
The situation appears that in these threads that sort of behaviour is rarely present in these threads and so this rather different set of dynamics between these two particular threads are something that I'll go out on a limb and suggest would be a more negative clash than if they were left as they are now.

If you look at threads and posts like waves at a beach it isn't such a big deal. Some days the swell is small and a decent wave rolls around once in a while. Other days you're constantly getting battered by the breakers on your way to sit out the back and the swell is huge.

Im reading the Tae Kim's guide and I can't understand how this sentence functions

ボブは魚が好きだ

It isn't really explained at all what the が particle does here, and why you add だ
can somebody break this down for me :(
>>
File: ダチ.png (51KB, 1314x491px) Image search: [Google]
ダチ.png
51KB, 1314x491px
これは正解だな。
>>
>>72385628
は marks ボブ as the sentence's topic. 魚が can mean specifically fish. The だ is simply a declarative, similar to 'it is'.

As far as I know you can't do ボブは魚は好きだ。 I don't think you can have は twice in the sentence. I believe it's は for generic topics, が for more specific topics.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also new to this.
>>
>>72385628
It's difficult to understand at first, but in Japanese, 好き behaves as an adjective, not a verb. が indicates the subject of the sentence, which isn't always the same as the topic marked by は. If it helps, try seeing 好き as "liked". Literally, the sentence would mean "as for Bob, fish is liked".
>>
>>72385986
Also, you add だ because すき is an adjective, though you can probably get away with not using it since it's usually obvious what you mean.
>>
>>72385628
Suki is an adjective.

Fish is "desirable".
To whom? To Bob.

Desu is the standard verb when there is no other one around, since Japanese is SOV and a complete sentence only ends when a verb shows up.
>>
>>72385818
I see he let you use his PC too!
>>
>>72385628
What >>72386059 said. In Japanese, you need a verb at the end to have a complete sentence. The だ is that ending verb. Of course, だ can be implied.

iirc you can use は twice in a sentence cause i got marked up on one of my papers from that... that being said, actually using は and が correctly when you get to complicated sentences is very very confusing and its one of the things that you can easily distinguish a native vs nonnative speaker

Yeah I fucked up and didn't see the previous line.

Thanks everyone.
>>
>>72387856
His translation of the first line is better but he's just being nitpicky about the second one in my opinion.
>>
>>72385628
が makes me feel, he/she doesn't know or no need to say what Bob likes foods but fish.
actually だ is not necessarily.
but words after verbs decide what sentence really want to say
like
ボブは魚が好き *だった*
Bob liked fish
ボブは魚が好き *じゃない*
Bob doesn't like fish
ボブは魚が好き *です*
Bob likes fish (honorific way)
and as you know, you can add any other words.
of course you can say
ボブは魚が好き
it's ok, but it can't see, sentence will continue or not.

I write every word that comes up in anki that isn't stupidly easy by now, maybe several times if it's a new card. It's really just a way to make sure I'm paying attention to what radicals the kanji has and where they go, so my handwriting gets pretty hasty sometimes and a large part of it is probably illegible.

I was excited, I watched videos of 18th MMDCup on Youtube. I'm not familiar with MMDCup, I found out about it (today?). I also discovered Prix Italia (today?) as well (you could also write too here). I think it is beautiful. I encouraged my friend to watch the video. Not to change the subject, I made Okonnomiyaki for lunch. Since I don't cook it was a bit difficult for me to do it. However I have to get used to cooking alone to live alone in the future. Today I didn't have business going out, so I didn't go out, but I want to tomorrow. I had Sushi for dinner. I'm happy since I love sushi.

Umm... I feel that I can't (I have no idea what you are tying to say here). Maybe because I don't want to write about my feelings in detail. I must write (???) to be conrrected by English speaking Anons. This is just for me, writing attractively will lead to better writing. So I'm dedicating to writing tomorrow. Thank you for reading.

In the next post I'll re-write the whole thing as if I had wrote it, so you understand good flow.

Easy.
- Both correct, but took you several seconds?
Hard
- Correct meaning, but slightly wrong pronunciation? (i.e. ten instead of tei)
Hard or Again
- Any other combination?
Again.

It helps saying your answers out loud before pressing again, you will feel the weight of your incorrectness when you hear the correct pronunciation and feel bad about not pressing Again for it.

Interesting question, I try to see them as separate particles, but always check the translation to see if my inference is correct. Things like "de+mo" are already clicking more naturally, I think of it as "by means of + even if". Same goes to ni+wa, I can't translate it into a single word but I get the particle combo intuitively and could probably translate a sentence using it through other choices of words.

>>72394140
You know what is primitive? Every store having credit card machines to reduce losses when they get robbed. And so people don't have to walk with cash on their pockets and get robbed. Um abraço da macacolândia.

Former part-time conbini cashier here.
You can use these major brand credit cards in any convenience stores in Japan with no restrictions at all. It's totally welcome and even preferable than cash (for me as a cashier)
Taxis, department stores, supermarkets, gas stations, hotels, theatres, drugstores, hospitals etc are the same too.

Keep in mind, on the contrary most fast food restaurants in Japan such as Mcdonald's, Yoshinoya and so on and privately run local ramen shops/ cafes usually refuse credit cards.
The 5% fees for credit card companies must be the reason why I guess.
But you don't have to be that nervous as they are like the only exceptions where you can't pay with cards here.

Peoples motivations on here for learning japanese are different. They wish to add JLPT results to a resume, perhaps become a translator, or enjoy an increase in salary if it relates to their existing profession(military).
They also might wish to travel and stay in japan for lengthy periods, perhaps secure a wife and settle down.
/jp/ wants to consume native material. They don't want to talk to anybody and JLPT scores are useless as their only measure of success is boolean: Can I comprehend it or not. my bad, does a Japanese version not exist?
>>
Okay, so I'm going to start trying the kanji. I was thinking of starting with reviewing radicals.

But I don't know how to approach this.

I have a distant unpleasant memory of repititiously writing down Chinese over and over (but this is probably the correct answer), and I'm not a fan of the whole mnemonic thing.

How did you approach this?
>>
How many minutes/hours a day do you spend learning Japanese on average?
>>
>>72398421
I downloaded an anki deck of radicals and started learning their English meanings. I didn't actually care about the meanings, just that I could visually identify them.

I stopped after I learned most of the common radicals - like a quarter of them. Jisho and https://kanjialive.com/214-traditional-kanji-radicals/ helped me understand how radicals change when you put them in different places in kanji.

This really helped me when I started learning the kanji, because I could break kanji into their radicals quickly (that sort of thing is the way I learn best).

>>72398139
>>
>>72399035
Also, most new kanji would see I would look up what radicals they're made of if I can't tell on my own, using Jisho (again, not actually checking the meanings, just knowing what they look like).

I learn kanji via the Core 10k - by learning words they're included in rather than the kanji themselves (but to be clear, I often look up the individual kanji on Jisho and find out what readings they have/compounds with them).

>recognize a kanji without significant issues in Anki
>encounter it in the wild and have no idea what the fuck it is, feel like a retard when I find it in a dictionary
What the hell. Is it because I'm used to seeing kanji in a bigger font, so I don't recognize it immediately when it's smaller?
>>
>>72400837
I had trouble reading kana when I first started looking at it on the computer screen, but soon got used to it.

Kanji with a shitload of strokes is hard to read because it's tiny as fuck on fonts like these.

How did it go?
The longer you take, the worse it gets, if you review - say - 500 accumulated cards today and your normal is 200 a day, you will get 300 a day a few times a week for some time before it gets back to you regular schedule. Unless you reduce new cards to counter-balance, but I wouldn't advise doing that.

>>72398421
Learn basic kanji 1nen (80) or radicals (200) and then start doing Anki vocabulary, you will get some recognition patterns from knowing basic kanji and still be able to bruteforce your way into kanji.
You can always rote-study kanji (there was a guy doing it over /jp/, follow the discussion thread on >>>/jp/16720870 ) but that will require some strong determination.

I introduced my friend to Rikaisama and its import function so he could make his own Vocabulary deck on Anki but somehow audio is a problem. Everything should be in order, we double checked everything, the audio files do get downloaded yet in the end doesn't play when he goes studying said cards. All other premade decks with audios are working properly of course.

Worth noting I've done this operations many times on Windows, whether on my computer or other people's computers here in DJT and never had troubles making it work. I never owned a MAC and in all honesty my friend isn't very knowledgeable either about his own MAC so we're having a hard time finding the cause of the problem. It's very frustrating.

Do my kanji look terrible? Since I've started doing them according to the stroke order, I've made massive improvements, I think. I honestly thought, initially, that Japanese, unlike Chinese, didn't required following the specific stroke order for the writing to look nice, but I was soon to discover that it's not about what others think about your writing, but the fact that doing them in the right order actually made them good-looking.

Your writings looks good, you just have to get more mileage their sizes will stop varying so wildly and you learn to think "inside the box".

Well, before trying to follow stroke order, I had seen plenty of videos pointing out how important hanzi stroke order in Chinese is so as to make your writing...well...nice. However, all the Japanese youtubers(westerners from Japan) mentioned that no Japanese would look at you with weird eyes if you just did kanji in whatever order you want. Obviously, even if that were true, my kanji look God-awful without stroke order.

Other than that, not much to say. And thank you, I'm really trying to enclose and even the radicals as well as I can within one kanji.

Fancy as fuck.
Nah, on a serious note not that bad.
Your 力 radical looks a little stiff.
The 言 radical is a little short compared to strokes on the right, making it appear more closer in height to the 王 radical in words like 理, instead of the full length/height.
The 豕 part of 縁 is out of proportion.
Your 立 radical in 端 looks a little wide.
The ハ part of 末 seem a bit short.
These are things which should clear up in time, though.

It's not remotely as bad as my handwriting. I'll post two photos of written kanji reps next.

Not gonna insult someone else's handwriting when mine is shit to begin with. When I'll be the queen's scribe, only then will I go about saying how bad other's writing is. Besides that, seeing how much work you put into all those, I can hardly say anything else but good job. Mine were written slowly and carefully and yours were written hastily and still look better.

To be honest I like your 刀 radical though. It's all mine will never be...like, proportionate.

They're really fucking tiny. My writing is really fucking tiny. Probably something to do social anxiety or whatever, if you are inclined to follow graphology.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/199211/the-lowdown-handwriting-analysis

Had a rummage through some old notepads and found a slip of paper with some characters on it. Really don't know when it written but it is a larger, earlier version of the above posted chicken scratch. Must have been a lot slower. Before I stopped writing out kanji reps I was doing a few hundred I day and writing them out very fast. It became a motor reflex sort of to the point that if I stopped writing a kanji mid character it would cause a moment of confusion because it wasn't really a matter of recalling strokes but instead knowing which chunks were involved and jotting out the chunks. When people talk about stroke count I really wouldn't have half a clue because I never really learned then that way.
Might start practising characters again. My handwriting was somewhat neat when forced to write essays back in schooling, but it's been so long. Did you ever had to write things on the blackboard back in highschool? That was just as terrifying as public speaking for me. The idea of someone watching you write is enough to break into a cold sweat.

>>72414794
When I was going through RTK for some reason instead of normal paper I printed out a stack of grid paper and ended up filling enough pages that I actually stickytaped them all together is a giant grid and rolled it out, completely covering the loungeroom. From memory there were some 90 odd thousand characters written out. It was hilarious and slightly disturbing.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to say a word without placing stress on a syllable. I refuse to accept the concept.

It's either oxytone, paroxytone or proparoxytone. That's the reality I live in.
Unaccented can at best mean "it doesn't matter where you put the accent".

I can't even begin to fathom how that would play out in Mandarim, though.

What is your working environment? Android? iOS? What are you reading where you are wanting to get words from? Light novels in text form, manga scans, web pages, etc.?
Depends entirely on what you are doing as to which would be an easy way to achieve this, with a little bit of setting up.
>>
>>72429258
I use AnkiDroid, I don't even have PC Anki (Since it serves no purpose to me, my PC is garbage and syncing takes way too long to bother with it). I get my words from manga scans for the moment.
>>
>>72429318
>I get my words from manga scans for the moment.
If you haven't already, these two work really well in combination with Ankidroid for mining words:
OCR Manga Reader:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ocrmangareaderforandroid/files/OCR_Manga_Reader/
Aedict dictionary:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.baka.aedict&hl=en
Once downloaded and the dictionary files are downloaded for each app, then, to make it easier, you will set up a mining deck or vocab deck (if you haven't) in Ankidroid.
Since I'm shit at explaining things, I'll grab my tablet, take a couple of screenshots and put together a little tutorial type thing for mining manga scans with your tablet/phone.

Okay, since you're not using rikaisama there is a way you can do it semi-manually.
This offline desktop dictionary program is used:

Use this program to look up words and save them in a list. This list can be exported as a tsv, which can then be direct imported into an Anki deck.
There is an image of this process, give me a minute or two to put it together.
