It's very complicated so I'm going to try and make it simple :

A category = forget about it as a civilian, full auto, explosives and so on.

B category = most handguns, most semi auto long arms, you have to be a member of a shooting club, do several shooting sessions a year and prove it with stamps, ask your local prefecture for a special authorization, it can take months or even years, you have to renew it regularly among other hassle

C category : "hunting" weapons, easy enough if you don't have a record, you just need a shooting license or a hunting license, it's a matter of weeks, at worst.

D category : most guns before 1900, no permit needed, no registration.

Legally, I stick to D category now. Even if I didn't have a record I would, with the current state of emergency and the government going big brother and fearing a new revolution, having a registered gun can be bad news.

The EU is also currently trying to make ours laws even stricter.
