I have been messing around with hiragana and katakana for a bit because I decided to learn some moonrunes for a day before I got to kanji and instantly hit a wall.

What is the language community like in Japan? Do people push for standardization? Does the average person use expansive kanji or is it just for Chinese/Exchanged words?
