I personally think 1 on 1 tutoring is even more stressful than teaching a small class. The parents expect to get (more than) what they paid for, it takes a big chunk of your schedule in irregular hours, and it's really boring, quite frankly.

And I don't know how it is for Chinese kids, but English isn't something a kid masters in a couple of months with 2~3 hours of lessons a week. Yet, the parents expect results after the first month. They also rarely introduce you to other propsective pupils, since they want you to devote all your attention to their kid. I tried to be a full-time private tutor, but unless you have some sort of brilliant master curriculum, which I have now but didn't when I tried, it just won't work. And once you lose your pupils, it's really hard to get it going again within the next 2~3 years. It's a neat side-job, I guess.

Most of the kids I've taught simply won't do their homework. If they did, perhaps they wouldn't need a tutor in the first place. But even if they haven't, just sitting down for an hour every week and actually focussing on their work, which they otherwise wouldn't do, is typically enough to get a student from Cs to As.

Honestly, it's basically what you said except instead of torture the risk is that they waste their parents' money, and instead of rubbish literature it's formulae from their textbooks.

I think I would have real trouble finding clients to teach English; if I were to tutor a language it would have to be Japanese, and I can't begin to imagine how I would adapt my method to Japanese as it's taught in schools here (or why anyone would need tutoring for high-school foreign language classes, because they're piss-easy). I suppose I could threaten to sudoku them if they didn't memorise 12,000,000 kenjis per week or something.

I love Namasensei because he's funny and i'd love to kiss him on the mouth, but his lessons are kind of dull because he always fills shit up with swearing and calling me names.

How do you guys feel about becauseofdreams' Learn Japanese series? His videos are brief and to the point which i admire, he isn't as cute as namasensei but I feel like i'm learning much quicker. Is he a good choice to use?
