I know video games are a massive time and I've recently been weaning myself off them and reading more e-books

Read Lord of the Flies and Brave New World recently and it was a lot more satisfying than some video game, although getting instant gratification from a video game is often much more appealing than the long dredge that is reading a book, although in the end the book almost always ends up being much more emotionally, intellectually and generally more of a benefit than any videogame.

With this knowledge in mind I intend, and I advise others to give up videogames, wean yourself off them and start reading.

Lord of the flies is overrated. Brave New World is an indispensable classic though.
I recommend Canticle for Leibowitz very highly if you're looking for a "highbrow but still fun" book to read.

I'm thinking I'm going to finally put the gristle to the mill and start learning languages. Three at once won't be too much, I hope: Irish (re-learning), Spanish (re-learning), and French (from scratch).
I really want to learn to read French to get access to some pretty based philosophers in the original language too.

Not familiar with the rest of Orwell's work (besides animal farm, which is about as good as a /pol/ greentext with 6000 upvotes on r/4chan).
I do have two of his social commentary books (Wigan Pier, Down and Out in London and Paris) lying around somewhere, but I've not got around to them yet. Non-commie, non-SJW critiques of capitalism interest me nowadays. I have become disillusioned with capitalism even though I viscerally hate "free lunchism" and abuses of people's rights to private property.

And IIRC a big part of "Lord of the Flies" is that the author wanted to "subvert" notions about "civilised man" producing civilisation if he was dropped in places without it, and promote instead the type of ideology you see in modern times like in zombie movies where "lack of resources = everyone forgets how to be moral", culturally relative anthropology where you can blame the environment on everything, the same type of thinking that blames the criminal's environment for his crimes rather than assigning any moral responsibility to the criminal.

Lord of the Flies is one of the first books that made me consider that the so-called "literary canon" is heavily influenced by the ideological and cultural biases of those compiling the "must read" lists over the generations. Therefore I'd say you should aim to read "obscure" books and older books in preference to "modern classics" most of the time, especially when, without context, a lot of books will seem a lot different and a lot more impressive than if you have the context for them.
I read Mill's "On Liberty" when I was about 15 and I was blown away by it because it actually examined notions every other thing I read took for granted and made logical arguments for what he was saying, but then I read Plato's Republic and had to look askance at Mill's "muh liberalism", which I began to hate, and now just laugh at because of the naivete and sincere proto-"current yearism" it contains.
You look at "history's finest minds" and more often than not, they're just John Olivers who were better read, more literate, and with a few dozen more IQ points. What they actually say isn't qualitatively any better, more often than not.

A lot of them seem to have less "judgement" in what they write and more "compiling", where they just throw reams and reams of text at you (sorry to be hypocritical) about shite that might be interesting if it wasn't taking up space in a book that should have been talking more broadly about the main topic. Sections that are the equivalent of the "female contribution to the 1916 rising" sections in textbooks and the like. Bloody hell.

Regardless, I've never put a lot of thought into my own stance on gun police if I'm honest. While I theoretically like the idea of people being able to buy guns for self-defense if they meet strict criteria, the idea of huge swathes of the population having access to guns does not sit well with me. Sure, Switzerland does it right - but it is one of the only countries on the planet that has done so. Not only that, but do you really think any Irish administration would be competent enough to implement a system as effective as the Swiss one.
