When will you realize that friendship is something that exists only in the heart, alongside something such as love?

You don't need a physical prescence to define that which you hold in your heart.

Ok, then am I friends with my waifu because I hold her in my heart?
Are we in love because I do love her?
As you can see, this definition leads to conflict with normal reason.
A relationship, whether friendship or marriage is a societal thing, just as the words defining them are grounded on the basis of society.
Now, what is the defining property of friendship then?
this is not my task to define,
but I do think that you will have to at least see a person sometimes in reality to consider yourself friends.

So you think of friendship only as a social connection

You're wrong, because friendship is something that can be felt as well. It's a feeling, an emotion. And that emotion can carry over to internet relationships, too.

Everything you say is just an empty appeal to emotion.

If I look at an painting, I am seeing a drawing. (painting and drawing are just different words for the same thing after all)
This doesn't mean that I can't "try to discern what the painting represents".
In the first place I will have to see the drawing to discern anything from it.

Life may be about interpretation (or not), but that doesn't mean that other people have to accept your interpretation.

Yes, but if you discern a meaning from one painting and meet someone else that discerns the same meaning from that painting, that's a connection between you.

Friendship is about finding what connects you to the other person. If you just take the world at face value you will never find or appreciate such connections.
>>
>>69164325
>all-or-nothing thinking
>obsession with some abstract state of "happiness"

Your philosophy is astoundingly childish.

In any event, back to the topic of friendship:
A man is what he does. There is no friendship (nor love, nor anything else) without real action. On-line interaction is a shoddy approximation of real action in the real world, and cannot ever serve as a proper substitute.

Why? I don't think so. Also we aren't talking about what friendship is about, but what friendship is.

it depends on what you consider a friend tb h

i agree with the burger that it's possible to be friends with someone on the internet, but like ""real life"" i'd need a year of social contact with that person before that certain trust can start building.
>>
>>69164452
It's really difficult to explain because it's something that developed naturally when you live life a certain way.

In the West, that is places like Germany, Europe, America, friendships aren't really that deep and so for your style of thinking it really isn't that far off the mark.

Asia's a bit different though with their honor code. The concept of friendship goes a bit into the self-awareness department that i'm trying to put into words for the past 10 posts or so but i'm finding it very hard to explain.

For now, we can agree to disagree.

There's different levels of friends imo

>people you know and get along with that you see out of routine (uni, work etc) but make no effort to contact outside of that
>people you make an effort to talk to, but only talk about non-personal stuff with
>people who you can talk personally with

This is a pretty simplified summary. Any of the above situations could count as "friends" even though there's largely different levels of closeness

But such relationships aren't the norm in the west, by any means. And even then, there are certain risks in trying to engage in such relationships in an individualist culture.

'tis the reason why our divorce rates in the west are 50% and higher, but the divorce rate in asia is sitting 20% and lower.

my argument is that it is indeed possible to achieve the kind of 'close friends that legitimately care about you' thing you just spoke of, it's possible for that to be the case online. no physical prescense is required.

>no physical presence is required.
By personal experience I'd say while it's not inherently required it certainly helps a lot with maintaining friends
I had friends that I went to school with, and didn't see physically outside of school days. After school finished, we didn't see each other in person anymore. We maintained contact for a few months but eventually drifted away. There were a few other contributing factors (one of them got a gf who he spends most of his time with) but in general I find that people prioritize the people they see in real life over those that they only contact online.
>>
>>69165069
Well I want to tie this into japanese a little bit.

I'm learning japanese for the purpose of moving to japan, so I sort of have a motivation for trying to achieve the "deep friendship" i speak about, because i'm going to be relying on that as a bridge to japan in the future.

so far it seems to be working pretty well. So in a case like mine, the "physical prescense" isn't really an option, so i've had to develop my social skills such as that I can develop such social connections without being restrained by distance. I'm becoming quite good at it, actually.

I have noticed my other friendships start declining though, like you mentioned, but that's the tradeoff I guess.
>>
>>69165062
I dunno m8, I've personally encountered plenty of people referring to others who I know aren't really their friends as 友達.

It's also common to use 友達 to refer to another person's friends. For example, a mother might say that one of her son's friends from school came around to drop off homework, even though the person is just a random classmate and not an actual friend.

So-called "deep friendship" develops over years of doing things together. Being together comes first, and friendship may follow later.

You don't establish a genuine connection with a stranger without spending time with them. After all, mannerisms, body language, personality, etc., are very important parts of socialisation that cannot be properly understood without face-to-face interaction.

He said he wants to eat breakfast.

He said he wanted to eat breakfast.
の方はより自然に聞こえる。

これみたいに一致しなくてもいい時もあれば、時制が一致してなくて全くわからない場合もある

Reported speech is always supposed to go one tense to the past(if possible - it's obviously impossible with the Past Perfect tense)

>He said he wants to eat breakfast.
this only sounds natural/logical to me when it's happening right now
>>
>>69169121
Right. I'm using that sentence as an example of tense shifting in English.

But there are situations in which the first sentence is correct. Suppose you have a friend who speaks too quietly and he orders at a restaurant. The waiter keeps saying what? Cause he can't hear him. You should say "he said he wants the quiche"
So I didn't tell him it was wrong. I just said the other is more natural and sometimes both are ok

Just watched three episodes in Japanese. Honestly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Details are lost both in the translation and the dubbing, but it's definitely watchable.

They also seem to deal well with jokes that don't translate well. For instance, in The Lip Reader, when Jerry's in the car with the deaf girl and he asks if it's fine to pick her up at six and she lip reads it as "sex", the translation instead has Jerry talk about going to a basketball game and they replace the "six" with "Knicks", which I thought was pretty clever.
