it's true tho I regularly buy new pairs of Wilson for €8 just for that maximum comfy feeling. I've about 30 pairs at this stage.

I've only ever seen boggers do this, and then they get in a huff with the wife and just "yeah shure jaysus jusht buy the fuckin things they're grand like" - they're not happy but they're too rural to say so.

They do, but people hate it because they're "forced" and their parents don't have fond memories of it themselves. It's also a focus on learning something off like poetry or a story, not so much having an actual conversation in it.

>Is it hard?
There's notable differences (sentence structure, orthography) but once you have them down, it's not so difficult. Like seeing "Ghriangrafadoireachta" at first is confusing but once you've learned how to read it (takes no longer than a day) the rules are quite consistent. We only have 11 irregular verbs.

The other sad thing is that the vocabulary doesn't exist in a lot of cases because idioms and loan-words haven't developed as they should have after the monasteries and the bards were persecuted. The "usage" of it didn't exist in written stuff enough after the 17th century.

And the modern "academic" types lack the vision and/or methodology to make the language less clunky by making new words and phrases. I suppose it's better that the field lays open for a radical revitalisation of the language, rather than a layer of non-used, linguistically rootless words being added on it year after year by every jobber woman with a degree in the subject.

Probably, but the transition could happen easier if kids with a better knack for language and desire to say things in Irish didn't have to keep asking "how would you say this" and getting a response that uses half a sentence to say what it transmitted through one word in English, if there's any way to say it at all.

For instance, the "Make America Great Again" catchphrase" of Donald Trump.
How would one say "make" in this context, and is there even a word for "great" that implies that type of "quality" more than explicitly referring to size (mór) or "well-carried out"?

That's how language develops. Irish was just robbed of much of its potential to develop naturally.

I would hate an out-of-nowhere modernist """reimagination""" of Irish by linguistic illiterates, but what I would like to see done to it to make it more effective as a literary language is what every major language did to themselves - borrowing obsolete words from their antiquated forms, and from Latin, to make more words with more precise and connotated meanings.

>>68369416
Yes. The amount of "dyslexic" kids and foreigners getting off from Irish classes made me want a full Hitleresque purge.
>>
>>68369610

i almost went to the gaelscoil down the road but my mam wanted us all to go to the same school for some reason and they only had 3 seats open there
>>
>>68368986
"Déanamh" translates to "make", and it's the closest word I can think of to the meaning of "make" in that phrase, but it's still not right. The sense of "make" that applies naturally to "deán" is the same as "cruthaigh", and it's not the main meaning of "déan". When you say "DT is making America great again" in that format, you are saying "Tá DT ag déanamh Meiricea iontach arís". It's "dog Irish", and if it's even technically accurate at all, it more naturally translates to "DT is doing great America again".
So if the previous anon is concerned about using gramatically incorrect shit because it's the (English) norm, then stretching Irish words to be as broadly interpretable as possible is going to butcher the language more than I think that bringing in new verbs and nouns based on obsolete and Latin ones would.
I think this is not a commonly held opinion though, and to some extent English verbs are rather broad, but not all of them, and those through reaching the natural limits of their own language, which they supplemented with archaic words as well as foreign ones. So if Irish is going to insist on making every Irish verb and adjective fit around every English synonym, no matter how tangential and specific, I think it will only symbolise weakness and frankly, "poverty" in the vocabulary and adaptiveness of the language, which will weaken it more intangibly than simply modelling it after English would.

Neither is "hiontach" accurate (no h), it should be "go hiontach" in that context. Saying "Meiriceá iontach" means "great America", not "[verb] America great".
"Déan Meiriceá go hiontach arís" translates to "Do America well again", which is not what is intended at all.
Just grave-rob a Sean-Ghaeilge form of "make" and apply it specifically to mean "change from one form to another", or rob the Latin form of "make" that means "make" in the same way.
We can't break the hold of English over our minds if we continually try and adjust Irish to fit it!
>>
>>68369610

Might just start using sea/ní hea even if it triggers people.

Don't do that. Anything but that. That's "it is/isn't", not "yes/no".
And the way Irish is structured, it's impossible to ask a question in such a way that "yes" or "no" are needed due to "it [verb]s/[verb]s not" not fitting.
That's the kind of butchering I'm talking about.

>The good thing is that there's more speakers (both % and total #), so they might be a bit more adventurous with their terminology.

They get by, for sure, but I don't think it's with the preciseness required for a proper "literary language" in most of the troublesome cases.
When I was a child in the Gaeltacht, a thing was using English verbs but adding "-áil" to them to make the present participle, but the teachers would chide us against that.

Ironic I was big against Irish as a teen, but now have a voice in the back of my head saying "go be an Irish academic". I'd have to learn three languages (two from scratch) to be able to do it to a standard I wanted to, and get a uni education in two subjects other than the ones I'm neglecting in order to shitpost here.

The jargon I'm not clear on myself, and the specifics of each language take years to learn, which is why I'm not just resolved to do it all part time and release work 15 years down the line.

The terminology of linguistics is actually pretty tangled too.

Take the "-ing" form of verbs. There's actually at least two different common "categories" for them, depending on whether you mean it as a verb or a noun.

"Walking" as in "he is walking" is the "present participle", but "walking" as in "his walking is much decreased since the injury" is called a "gerund".

>>68370595
Ironically the fact that emphasis on examples of what the word represents is a better way to teach the language of linguistics is a lesson in linguistics itself.
>>
>>68370292
I always thought sea/ní hea was an improper way of saying yes/no like if someone was making a statement and you agreed with them. Learn something new every day I guess. Might just start using something like "ja" then.

>I always thought sea/ní hea was an improper way of saying yes/no like if someone was making a statement and you agreed with them.

Depends on the context I suppose. I think the main "yes/no" vs "sea/ní hea" debate was over whether they could be used to substitute yes/no in the English phrasing of questions.

If someone says "Lá fliuch atá ann", you could say "sea", for example, but if someone said (in English) "do you think it's a rainy day?", you couldn't say "sea", you'd have to say "Lá fliuch atá ann".

If we're getting into the complex parts of it, I don't fully understand the proper terminology or "mathematical logic" of it.
I'm probably wrong about it, or at least butchering the nuances (tired af and not fully studied it), but the difference would be in how much of a sentence you are allowed to leave implicit in a sentence while maintaining the meaning.

"Is it raining?" = "yes, [IT IS raining]"

"An bhfuil sé ag cur báisteach?" = "Tá sé [ag cur báisteach]

One example of English leaving out a lot of "logic" is Spanish, where you can't say "go to bed", you have to say "go to your bed" or "go to the bed".
Imagine that linguistics is a text-based game like Zork, and if you say "go bed", the computer doesn't know what to make of that.

>>68370833
"Walking is good for you" treats the word "walking" as a noun.
>>
>>68371310
Another difference as well is that in English "yes" answers literally every question regardless of the verb in the question.

In English, you would ask "Do you run?", and you could say "Yes", with "I run" implicit after the "yes".

But in Irish you could say "An ritheann tú?", but you HAVE to say the grammatical/logical equivalent of "I run", rather than any catch-all "yes" word.

Is this making sense?

Argentina's the one invading islands full of easy-going farmers based on no other justification than proximity. Why the fuck would we side with them?

Absolutely hate this outlook. Cringe every time our government call the islands "The Malvinas"

It's not even a reasonable dispute. A towns worth of pasty anglos live on some islands that happen to be close to Argentina. It's just Argentinians being autistic as fuck

Almost the exact same "justification" is used to make support of Palestine the default status amongst Irish people - and if you disagree in any way, you're a bigot.

When have they done that?

No doubt Michael D would side with Argentina though.
>>

During the Falklands War our government vocally supported Argentina. And pretty much any time the Islands are discussed in the Dáil the term Malvinas are used

The situation in the North is not comparable to the Falklands situation and should not be used for supporting Argentina's bullshit claim to the islands. The mere act of implying that the two situations are comparable tarnishes the claim of the Irish people to the 6 counties of the North. Therefore any true Irishman who supports the reunification of Ireland would and should distance themselves from supporting Argentina's false claim over foreign lands.
>>
>>68384842
>they still occupy 6 counties of the country you stupid seánín
Non sequitur for why we should support Argentinian aggression.
Why are you tying our nation's rights to a situation that has nothing to do with us and that would in fact tarnish our moral claim?

>British Imperialism was and is bad for us and is visible still in the orange monkeys squatting up north to this day, it should be wiped out to the tiniest acre of the tiniest island in literally who lands everywhere

3000 farmers who're settled on some uninhabited islands aren't our enemies.

it doesn't matter at all, if Britain loses land power and prestige it's a good thing for us

good thing I never compared them, I said British Imperialism is the reason they're still held, so a blow to British Imperialism is a good thing

Reminder that if you support Argentina's sovereignty over the Falklands based on nothing more than geographical proximity then you are implicitly supporting British control over Ireland.

This is why it's so funny when I see Irish Republicans and Nationalists supporting Argentina in the dispute.

Except the only nation to have occupied the Falklands before the British got there were the French, who subsequently relinquished all rights to the island. Hence the islands were never stolen from anybody in the first place. There wasn't even anybody living there.

That's not a moral justification for why Argentina can do whatever it wants and take land without justification.

If Argentina can take land they have no right to, there's literally no reason why the UK can't.

The fact that so few Irish people understand this is bizarre.
