Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.

N2 here.
Did great on reading, horrible on listening.
Some questions completely flew over my head.
>>
Beginner here. I'm beginning to love kanji because it makes it so much easier to read. Kind of feels like optimizing code.

However, i've noticed some kanji characters are followed by a single hiragana character like い. Am i correct in assuming that's for conjugation like spanish?

Absolutely agree, man. Did great on reading. Yet the listening part was really hard. I remember being surprised at just how complex it was.

It might be my own fault of course, considering that last year I took the N3 and aced the listening section, so I assumed the N2's would be relatively easy. Guess I was wrong.

Not the case with the professor of this philosophy class.

I failed this guy's class before and i'm giving it another shot.

He has the most weirdest class format i've ever seen. There's no attendance check -- you're free to skip all his classes and only come for the tests if you want. But his tests aren't even based on his lectures in class or the text. It's a weird philosophy thing that you have to think out of the box type shit.

Now that I dropped everything I can breath again and have been enjoying Japanese again. If I took the test I probably would have failed.

I either don't really have a dream or the "dream" I had was just something I thought of because I needed to work towards "something". I don't really feel bad, more like relieved. I'm sure I have more than one thing wrong with my brain but it's seriously fun for me to sit around and daydream. And I have creative outlets to put my despair into too so don't worry. I just don't think there's anything "out there" that would make things great and happy. I just want to be at peace.

If you really put forth the effort and are committed you can probably read VNs and light novels without much trouble after 2 or 3 months.

You can force vocabulary in a short amount of time, but it's a lot harder to force listening and general language knowledge. Like sure you can learn 100 words a day if you're dedicated but you're still not going to be able to watch anime after 3 months..
>>
>>68256407
別な is a slangy improper way of saying 別の that isn't quite fully accepted yet but may be in the future
some speakers think it just means the same thing, some think it holds a slightly different nuance
refer to this:
http://oshiete.goo.ne.jp/qa/1101930.html

>別のもの:another thing

>別なもの:something different「違ったもの(異なるもの)」

but that's not a proper definition, just one native's opinion on what vibe it gives to him

Is Downtown so popular that it regularly receives subs?

I was watching it the other night and a 30 year old came on, claiming he'd been watching it for the past 14 years - which was long enough ago that I remember struggling to find/download anime above 60mb .rmvb fies.

It's still difficult finding Japanese films with sub files, yet Downtown apparently is fully subbed. My older Japanese friend says all her foreign friends knew of it before Japan too.

What accounts for its popularity? I had no idea it was so big among the international crowd.

That's funny.

It's true that N2 is a lot easier than N1 but it's not objectively easy. Out of the 38 unique posters in this thread, how many of them do you think are at N2 level or above without being a native speaker? Ten? Fifteen? I would bet less than 10.

I don't know if the weekly show has consistent subs but the new year 24 hour batsu shows are all subbed as far as I know

They are one of the most famous comedians in Japan and have been around for almost 30 years so anyone interested in Japan would probably end up hearing about them one way or another. Also helps that youtube is full of subbed short clips of their shows

It's probably a good idea to at least keep an anki mining deck.
It's very easy to fall into the trap of reading, coming across a word you don't know, looking it up and then forgetting it immediately after reading that sentence.
But I agree with dropping core. It's not a very natural or fun way to learn new words.

Been studying for only about 1-2 weeks now, finished kana, finished basic grammar on t.k. and I'm at around 100 kanji. Where should I see myself by the summer? Or in a year?

Just trying to get a feel for what my short term goals should be.
>>
>>68257909
You should be able to read simple works like Dragonball, Aku no Hana, and the usual suspects. You'll understand 70% of the words in basic comics meant for kids, but still have to look up a few words every page.

Don't bother reading until you hit at least 1,000 words, because you'll just overwhelm yourself. I'd say wait until you hit 2k in core, since that can be accomplished in a little over three months, but it's disappointing to not see results right away.

Once you hit around 2/3k words, bump it up to 20 words a day. You'll start noticing patterns and associating meanings to words, instead of memorizing the 1:1 translations that beginners have to rely on to build a foundation. After a year or two depending on your speed, your reading should only be slowed down by idioms/cultural references, handwritten Japanese, and potentially low kanji recognition.

Don't make the same mistake I have though, and only focus on manga. Listening is also an important skill that shouldn't be neglected.

My listening is shit, I live here and still struggle with anything that's not textbook Japanese. The sheer variety of saying things and the need to listen all the way to the end of a sentence drive me nuts.

I just watch everything on tv with subs - I've never been able to get Japanese .sub files to match up easily, so I've never gone that route.

People who are willing to invest the time to pause and re-listen to sentences over and over probably have the right idea.

I find slowing down my reading speed and mouthing the words under my breath helps a bit, but the trade off is you have to slow down.

I think >>68258704 probably has it right. Negative side is that most of the words are useless, but hey, it does the hard work for you.

>>68258663
10 cards/minute is the goal; it can be higher if you're a beginner of course, and not everyone is going to have the same speed.

>>68258646

Raised as a simultaneous bilingual, I have studied the subject extensively and from what I understand, these pathways are already formed if you know at least two languages. For example, everytime you hear or conjure up a word, your brain fetches all instances of that idea in the different lexicons your mind holds.

Therefore, if I had to guess, these subconcious pathways which are specifically formed when your brain knows more than one language can easily accomodate the addition of one extra lexicon, even in mid to late adulthood. Sad for monolinguals though, since these pathways are simply not formed and the brain does not tap into these capacities subconciously for them.

What's the least painful way to lookup an unknown kanji from paper to jisho in your opinion? Radical lookup? Google translate handwriting? Having basically 0 words in anki means I'm going to have to do it for every single word.

I rely mostly on radicals and only use google handwriting as a last resort.

Hey guys. After studying for a year I abandoned Japanese for a social life during my first year at uni and I've been missing it. I have 4000 reps in Anki now and I would rather start again doing 20-100 new words a day. However I personalised the Core 6k deck and TK deck to my liking by fixing definitions/mistakes etc. Is there any way to reset to the original order of the decks or will I have to redownload them and re-edit them as I go through?

>Is there any way to reset to the original order of the decks
As far as I know, no.
Once you've started using it the deck order then becomes jumbled and exporting/importing without the scheduling information will still keep that jumbled order but remove the due in [...] information.

If you do go down the fresh deck + re-editing route, you can sort your old deck by date edited to make it much easier to transfer those changes to a fresh deck. Once your fresh deck is good to go, export and save that for the future in case you quit again.

This information is all based off personal experience with an anki program that is a couple of years old. I'm not sure if they changed it so you can export with the original card order.
>>
>>68255938
18 - taking n1 next year, have 18 months experience so far
>>
>>68262823
I'm not sure if you should reset or not, you probably still have a faint memory of some cards which would boost your start a bit, but anyway, you might try this.

I don't know if those decks have a field to indicate the order, if they do, go to the browser, click on fields, click on the order field, select "sort by this field in the browser". Then click on the sort field in the browser so that the cards are now sorted. Now select all cards (ctrl+A), go to edit -> reschedule -> place at the end of the new card queue, hit ok. You should be done if I didn't fuck up my explanation.

Oh my god, you are my hero. My recognition does still seem ok enough to trawl through the reps and I still have extensive mnemonics, but I really don't like the jumbled order. Resetting to the default order this way will make it a lot easier to sprint through the first 1-2k and over time I will decrease the new words per day back down to 20. Thank you, anon.

I was told (by a Japanese speaker) that uchi is a female pronoun.
But now I'm watching anniemay and there's this very polite lad who always says "uchi no neko" about his cat.

Is this a special case, where he is not referring to himself, but about "my family's cat", "the house's cat" or something like that?

Always 20.
The first 2~3 months had me doing around 100 reviews a day.
From month 3 through 10, about 160~180.
I'm almost completing 1 year and my average is now 200~230.

That's because I've been failing over 20 cards a day, but yeah, expect your reviews to always be around 10x your new card amount.

It is the dish of the year. They talk about using it in salads and stuff in their explanation. They're hyping cilantro up, and not that salad in particular.
