Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.
>Go back to /a/

Only 4,000 people a year get scholarships to study in japan, and there are only 50,000 US Citizens residing in Japan

does this indicate that people don't want to go to japan? is there really only 0.000001% of my country trying to go there?

or is it indicative that it's really fucking hard to go to japan and there's actually like 200,000 applicants that got told to fuck off? I really hope i'm not fucking my life over right now.

There's an Olympic Games in 2020 that will signal the end of traditional japan. The westernization is coming. Your teachings will become literally useless in 12 years.

Would DJT be interested in building the ultimate anki deck? Something like Core + RTK/KKLC all at once.

Cards would pop up similarly to core except we'd also have additional information regarding the word and its Kanji displayed on the card.

Example :
調理
ちょうり
cookery; preparation
この魚は調理が難しい
Cooking this fish is difficult.

Left side of the card :
調
音読み: チョウ
訓読み: しら.べる、 しら.べ、 ととの.う、 ととの.える

Right side of the card :

音読み: リ
訓読み: ことわり

Would especially be useful for the 音読み in my opinion.

「敗北主義もいいところ」よ。

I think the way of 'もいいところ' is difficult.
I guess that is omitted for '敗北主義(を言うの)もいいところ(までにしてください)'.
In the case, 'いいところ' is a kind of irony expressions like 'いい加減'.

Incidentally, there is a way of '~どころか、せいぜい~がいいところ'.
一番どころか、せいぜい十番目がいいところ
I get the impression that is mixed with this expression.

As anon^ said here it's happened that I'd have whatever translation of something available in case I don't understand what I'm reading.

I only do this after having tried of course. Often I can read what I'm reading fine but don't make sense out of it, so sometimes translations help in that regard. Too often though they're just plain wrong. Don't make this a bad habit though.

I could barely read Japanese but found many mistakes and wrong translations when reading a manga I've read in English and German before.

>>
>>68128332
>>68128632
Mods don't seem to be willing to do jack shit, huh?
Where's the one responsible for moving DJT over here, anyway? Is the only way anything gets done here when some rogue anonymous mod throws a fit? From the way this guy is replying to you you'd think he's got nothing to do with the website.
>>
>>68128332
While I'm glad he took the time to talk I was annoyed at him constantly redirecting the conversation to "you can make a website instead!".

That's not what we want, we were born on 4chan's /a/ and want to stay there because we personally associate with the kind of people who browses there. How is it so hard to understand? It boggles my mind that mods themselves can't understand something as simple as that. No one wants an external website, like you (or the anon in there) said the website would just die off eventually as no new fresh blood would be coming in.

The translation thing is also a huge misunderstanding. I get it a lot of us were desperate and tried to appeal by saying we were translating shits - this is not entirely true. True a lot of us ended up translating things but it was by ourselves after having gained experience through DJT's help in learning Japanese, none of this was a group effort.
>>
>>68128766

Then I see this Onyomi & Kunyomi shit. For fuck sake, you piece of shit japs, why are you doing this?

Do I seriously have two learn both fucking pronunciations for each kanji? Seriously? Can I not get away with learning one?
>>
>>68129182
If I had to add anything, I would like to say that DJT had its faults too and the overall quality of the thread wasn't what it was one year ago for example. From my perspective the biggest problem were a handful of shitposters (you perfectly know which ones) who completely shat up the thread with meaningless shitposts and overall passive-aggressive and toxic behavior. As far as I know none of them ever got punished and even if they did they'd just pop up the next day as if nothing happened.

I'm not playing hypocrite either though, in a sense improving the overall quality of DJT is also a common effort. If DJT were to go back to /a/ I believe we would need to learn from this whole situation as to not allow the same mistakes to happen again as I don't believe the situation is black & white. If DJT were to go back it shouldn't be in the exact same form as it was before. Our guides and all should remain, but the content of the thread should definitely be more /a/ related and definitely abide by /a/'s rule.

A good example are the couple raw manga threads that have popped up these past few weeks. Those threads have been amazing and of great quality, and this is exactly the kind of quality DJT should've been striving for; not /int/-tier shitposts and blogposts, because in this case it seems we do deserve to having ended up here.

You're free to copy paste as much as you'd like, if you don't like my post feel free to ignore it.

Don't memorize all the readings, memorize vocab. Then you'll naturally be able to recognize the different pronunciations. There are kanji that don't use all of their readings/it's uncommon and there are some that use readings that aren't even listed.
>>
>>68129273
In words, each kanji has the following three attributes:
- meaning
- pronunciation
- appearance

While the appearance of a kanji is not as directly linked to its pronunciation as, say, an English word is to its pronunciation, it (the kanji's appearance) still provides some amount of hint as to how the kanji is pronounced. So don't imagine yourself having to perfectly memorize every single symbol to be able to tell how it's pronounced.
For instance, 補 舗 捕 哺 all have the same onyomi.
Also, 責 積 績
You get the idea.

Meaning is tougher. You'll need to learn vocab and see it in context in order to grasp the meaning of a kanji. Unlike pronunciation, though, meaning is less precise most of the time, and isn't actually necessary in order to read a word.

In words of Chinese origin individual kanji also usually have another kanji to accompany them. If you know a word and its meaning, but do not have a full grasp on the kanji in the word - take for example the word 成績 - let's say you know 成, but not 績 - here you can guess the reading of 績 from its radical, read the word as せいせき, which let's say you know from anime or whatever, and make some kind of connection between the kanji 績 and the meaning of the word 成績. This is how reading improves your 漢字力.

It's not as bad as people like to make it out to be. The system works great in practice even if learning it is relatively tough.

I think because it's a 'Japanese' thread it attracted a lot of people who weren't interested in /a/ related content. I've seen multiple times people confidently saying that /djt/ isn't /a/ and it just happened to be there. Having a raw manga thread does fix that. I wish people wouldn't be so anal and include VNs and LNs as well. And to also let people ask/answer questions about the language.
>>
>>68129848
I'd be fine with the raw thread but it is indeed too limited in its current state and keeps dying if an anon isn't around to bump it every now and then.

Your post is pretty spot-on and I agree with everything you said, but regardless, I'll copypaste every single reply in its entirety for the sake of fairness and impartiality. I'm not DJT's official representative or anything like that, just an average anon who had some time to kill.

Eh.

[19:44] <anon14216431> Hello, I would like to ask you a question about DJT (Daily Japanese Thread), which was recently moved from /a/ to /int/. Is there any particular reason why you feel it's more appropriate for /int/ than /jp/?
[22:02] <kami`> A mod post has been made on /qa/ that reflects the team's sentiments on the matter
[22:07] <anon14216431> Can I reiterate a few points that I raised to another mod here earlier?
[22:11] <kami`> no Ive seen them already
[22:12] <anon14216431> And I suppose you have nothing to say about them...?
[22:15] <kami`> The issue has already been decided at hiro's behest. There is nothing more to discuss.
[22:17] <anon14216431> Oh well, thanks anyway.
>>
>>68130211
>Forget about having DJT on /int/
If it comes to this yes this is definitely what people should be doing.

If you people want to be back on /a/ you simply have to browse it. If you people do not wish to be on /int/ then simply stop browsing it. DJT as it was ending doesn't have to be end per se, it can also be a chance to rebirth in a fresher and better way; it's just a name after all, just 3 letters.

If you like dwelling on /int/ then you have nothing to complain about, stay there and having being an /int/ resident.
>>
>>68130308
What a narcissist faggot. Of course there is more to discuss, otherwise we wouldn't all be posting about this matter right now.
>>

It seems like that's what the other generals such as buyfag and /ai/ are doing. Wording a thread in such a way so that it doesn't get deleted.

>>68130308
Well there you go. Go take the raw threads then, let shitty /int/ threads die. In the end all you need is a place to discuss material in japanese and ask questions. If the discussion and questions are about raw anime related content they have no reason to get rid of it.
>>
>>68130308
Wow what a cunt.
>>
>>68130308
Alright, we have to be realistic here. At least for now, there's no way to get DJT back in its original form. I'm sad about it, we all are, but it can't be helped.

I would rather the Raw Manga Thread than staying here. So I propose we move to that thread, abandon this one, and make posts related to Japanese in it. This means we'll have to be less offtopic, but a certain amount of Japanese discussion as it pertains to anime/manga will probably be allowed.

See you there

We don't have to hide anything.

If everyone here wishes to go back to on /a/, then follow what Venezuela anon and I have been saying these past 30min or so. Simply gather in a "Untranslated/raw materials" thread and let us start off from zero.

>>68130211
>>68130475
>>68129592

I will repeat myself, it needs to be clear in everyone's mind : if you do not wish to be on /int/, then stop and browse /a/. No one is forced to continue making threads here on /int/ or post in it. But if, IF, you indeed like to blogpost and shitpost, then please be honest with yourselves and say it : I belong to /int/. This is as simple. The only relevant problems I'm seeing here is having to rename our websites from "djt" to something else like "raw", that's all.

This is what I had been saying a few weeks ago. I came back today to see how things were going and also because I was saddened to see how inactive the raw manga thread was.

>>
>>68130807
I'm a pro RTK autist.

RTK is great but you need to study it in order using Koohi and Jisho alongside for more and different English keywords and to check the readings. You also need to follow what Heisig tells you regarding how to write kanji and write all new kanji at least 5-10 times.

Do 10-25 kanji a day. That's it.
>>
>>68130857
Some mods (asan) actually care about their community. Some clearly don't.
>>
>>68130807
It's just a book for memorizing kanji by brute force and mnemonics.
Some of his choices are questionable. Personally I think that you need vocab to properly grasp kanji, but also that separately studying kanji is still a good idea.
Don't want to read that particular book? Don't bother.
>>
>>68130857
We all don't get it either, but that's how it is. Now it's time to realize things can't go back to how they were and time to start anew learning from this whole experience.

Let's be honest, DJT as it was in its last days on /a/ was shit, the funny thing is the day before it got deleted I remember thinking to myself "I should abandon this thread, only reason I stay is because of a dozen of good anons".

Let us have a "raw materials" thread or something and make it a norm over /a/. This would be 100% on-topic, there's nothing that could happen to us, and good things are, it'd filter all the bad sides DJT had.

You just need to take first step anon. That's how 4chan has always been, and this is what the kind mod that took the time to talk you earlier tried to make you understand : the possibilities are countless, you just need to act and do it. Let DJT go, it's dead, come with us on /a/.
>>
guess we can just shitpost here instead, probably a good idea to link this DJT thread in the raw manga thread if people don't know.
>>
The problem with a raw manga or raw anything specific is there is not that much to be talking about or too many people in the first place which is why DJT was great as it combined all that into one thread that would actually stay alive so you could come in and ask your questions
>>
>>68131041
This thread should die and people should stay on topic instead of shitposting.
It's not difficult.
>>
>>68131176
-> >>68130578 >>68130614
At first it might be slow but it's normal, after a while a newborn community will emerge things will run more smoothly than the current raw threads. I believe something new like this needs time to shape itself up.
>>
>>68129595
Kami actually replied to me all the times I contacted him about DJT.
He was very roundabout, pushing some generic "the team will discuss the necessary measures" talk like >>68129661 . So yeah, no use in contacting him anyway.
Won't post logs because that's the reason mods don't even want to talk to people in the first place.

By the way, all the other mods ignored me, even the ones I contacted more than once, in different dates. I even message Hiro once to check his fucking inbox or /qa/, but I can't tell whether or not he bothered to.

If not even the boss cares, there's nothing we can do except some sperg raid. And I'd rather spend my time with something productive, like learning Japanese.

You don't need STEM to go to Japan I don't think

A computer science bachelor's degree gets you into Japan on an engineering work visa.

"Japanese Studies" isn't a useless category either. If you work for an international company, a japanese studies venture can net you a transfer to their japanese work branch.

Maybe you should do what i'm doing anon? Forget about getting a nip degree, but do post-graduate study in Japan. You have the best chance of getting a scholarship that way.

you'll need about 5000 words and all the grammar in Tae Kim's guide. You can if you learn 13 words a day plus read the grammar guide. cramming 13 words a day won't be easy though until your better with grammar so you can actually use them. I'd say 2 years is more reasonable and only if you study every day.

Kinda nice but almost completely useless in terms of passing the JLPT

> try to watch anime without subs despite my relative beginner status.

You need intensive listening if you want to get anywhere quickly. That means training on short bits of information (medium length sentences) with high comprehension. Take advantage of subs2srs or similar things. Watch nihongonomori and such.

It might also be a good idea to take any JLPT prep listening material you can find, break it into sentence length segments with audacity, and make flashcards with that. But it might not be worth the time compared to just using subs2srs.

Guess people like that aren't really looking for Japan, but rather for an international melting pot.
Could have come to Brazil this year, but whoever wants their head chopped on a silly trip?

Speaking of which, going to Japan after the Olympics sounds cool - the whole thing will be shrinking back and not much will be going on in terms of tourism, I figure.
Or maybe on the other hand the international raid on Japan will leave scars and whoever shows up late for the party will take all the blame for whito piggu.

So far I know hiragana, katakana, and the shit I mentioned in my other post basically and that's about all. It's nice knowing katakana, it gives me the illusion that I'm decent because I can read some random Touhou music names.

That was my second Anki session done basically.
I tried doing some grammar but I dunno, it went over my head a bit so maybe I should leave that be for now.

There's no point in arguing about it since neither of us has anything to back up what we insist, but I genuinely don't think that's true.
I have no doubt there are people out there who can dedicate themselves seriously to a foreign language for a few decades who would by all means be ahead of a native middle schooler, or a native adult who hasn't seriously read anything since compulsory education.

Fuck, do people really think learning foreign languages is this colossally difficult? Have you ever met an immigrant before? guess that's a tough one if you're japanese
>>
>>68137344
Nah man English is easy. You just need constant exposure.
>>
>>68137344
What son?

If anything, learning Japanese has made me lose some respect for the fabled polyglot. It's really not that fucking hard, it just takes a lot of time and effort.

I already know a fair amount of French from high school. If I wanted to I know I could become fluent in French quite easily... it's so simple compared to Japanese and I am able to learn this cunt of a language.
>>
>>68137289
To be completely honest, i'm currently taking jp 1 in uni and it's unbearably slow so i started doing anki at a rate of 25-30 words a day. You absolutely need to supplement it with grammar study. It's essential that you go through some resource like taekim/genki/etc.

I don't game at all so i can't comment on that but i do read manga and i can somewhat comfortably read sol romance and such. This is coming from someone that tried to go at them blindly with just a dictionary without any sort of Japanese study at all because i was too impatient to wait for scanlators.

Other things i do include chatting with Japanese friends everyday (that i've met through hellotalk), posting on lang-8 and skype. I also live in LA where there are plently of Japanese people but i feel that you end up using English as a crutch with them that's why i go at length to find some poor sap that doesn't speak a lick of English online.
>>

I'm glad someone here is sharing in the anki suffering with me even if we are studying different languages

You implied being "10 years old", I don't think that's how things work. I have zero conversational experiences but I bet I can speak better than a child about any subject.

I might lack the grammatical dexterity, the speed at which words come to mind, but I have a wider grasp of how the world works and what ideas I want to conceive - I am certain a lot of stuttering would happen, but I am also certain any adult would much rather hold a conversation with me than with a 10 years old.

Is there an Anki deck specifically for vocabulary from lewd doujins?

I've been taking the core deck and some of the vocabulary words/phrases are pretty useless to me. I'm learning Japanese for this reason and maybe to read a R18 VN or something, but that's it. I certainly don't need enough vocabulary to maintain a solid conversation or watch untranslated anime, I just need to know words like ass and dick.

Can someone link me to an Anki deck for this if one exists?
>>
>>68138456
I can only read because I've finished Core6k. Before that I couldn't handle the "have to look dictionary every 2 words" thing. I'm going full 10k and then start mining OR selectively importing cards from the Core30k that have the kanji I still need to learn.
