Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.
>Go back to /a/
We'd like to. Bitch to the mods.

If I ever decide to delete the folder I'll at least upload them here in case anyone wants them.

Sunday is the JLPT test (能力試験)

I'm gonna make JLPT 3, but i'm not even quite prepared.

I think I know a bit more than 350 kanji, I HAVE to pass on this test.

I need help.

What the hell, I know 1600 kanji and I don't even consider taking JLPT.

Maybe it's time for fart jokes cramming at Kanji Damage; it's designed for dumb people, but looking at your suicidal behavior, I think it fits.

>How do I make my own font like that? I want to conlang, but doing it on paper is boring as I can't put it to the test that easily and keep consistency.
Creator here.

I used an existing open source font for the basis of the glyph shape. I edited it with FontForge. Note that fontforge is somewhat unstable on every OS except for linux. If possible, you should run a linux VM running fontforge instead of running the windows version of fontforge.

A good scratchplace for writing system design is MS Paint, funny enough. Though I did the one in your picture mostly in my head since I've been designing toy writing systems for years to cope with my dysgraphia. Picture related.

I'm having trouble with the が particle. Supposedly it's used when you want to identify something out of many possibilities. However, here are some of TK's practice exercises:

ジム) アリス は 誰?
ボブ) 友達だ。彼女 が アリスだ

アリス) 図書館 は どこ?
ボブ) ここ が 図書館だ。

I understand the second example now that I think about it. The library could be there, or over there, or in Boston, but it's here, so が is appropriate. But what's going on with the first one?
>>

Further, if you want to design toy writing systems / constructed scripts, here are some very good sources of inspiration.

Ehh, so we meet again! Guess it's in our blood to do this autistic shit. I looked at FontForge as Pierre-san replied earlier, but I was waiting for your answer since I read about FF's instability.

I figure one'd have to use Character Map to input the symbols, but sounds simple enough to use.

Any tips on the whole grid system thing? I feel a bit lost, maybe replacing a pre-existing font might help learning.

Don't know about Character Map; is that something like an IME?

Modern font display engines support arbitrary ligatures, so you could make syllabic characters that way, but it requires an excellent grasp on how digital typefaces work.

By grids, do you mean in glyph editing or font display?

For glyphs, grid systems are basically useless unless you drew out outline splines on graph paper. Otherwise, just get a feel for weight and curve shape by editing existing fonts. Cubic splines are much easier to make pretty fonts with, but quadratic splines are much more powerful for representing arbitrary curves (and can approximate "perfect" circle-like arcs better with fewer nodes).

For display, monospace is best space, especially if you're getting started with toy writing systems. Proportional text works very well for linear alphabets though, because each character carries a very different amount of information due to orthography.

Oh, fortunately my system will be regular like Japanese, where every character occupies the same square space.
By grid I meant how to keep the overall balance/placement, where to place a character's base or whatever. I'll dabble and find out.

I'll note down your tips just in case I find myself needing to do stuff that is spaced differently, even though I don't fully understand it yet. Lots of stuff to Google down.

Here's Windows Character Map, kinda handy but no way of displaying bigger characters, that will definitely be a problem.
>>
>>68099173
>By grid I meant how to keep the overall balance/placement, where to place a character's base or whatever. I'll dabble and find out.
Stroke width, "ink" amount (complex CJK characters have thinner strokes than simple ones to preserve the overall weight), and consistency in how regular the strokes are. That's the basics.

>Here's Windows Character Map
Oh, yeah now I remember what it is.

You could always add shittons of custom rules to google IME.

>In Japanese sentences, this question includes implicit that some females there and he could not find who is Alice.
xIn Japanese sentences,
〇 In Japanese,

Using "sentences" here feels incorrect to me but I can't quite articulate why.

xthis question includes implicit that
〇 this question includes the implication that

x that some females there
〇 that some girls are there/that some women are there

Using "females" there is a bit odd, at least to me. It's not technically wrong but it feels unnatural. "Female" is generally a more technical term, not a general use one. In hip-hop slang "females" is often used that way, however.

ex: "I ain't fuckin' with females no more. I only suck dick now."

xand he could not find who is Alice.
〇 and the speaker/Jim can't figure out who Alice is.

There are a lot of ways you could write this; this is the one that feels the most natural to me.

xIn this case, が identify who is Alice.
〇 In this case, が identifies who Alice is.

Be careful using "who is". I'm pretty sure "who is ____" is only ever used if you're asking it as a question.

I remember making DJT #250 a long time ago when I was in college, but I rarely visit on this thread. I have stopped studying Japanese grammar overall now since I can just talk it out to my jap colleagues anyway. I still have a few problems in grammar but kanji is good since kanji is the most enjoyable part of the language. I have not taken any tests so far yet but maybe next year I might want to take N2 or N1 depending on my grammar ability.

So I had a strange moment today

>learning japanese grammar, starting to finally delve into Kanji
>take a break to play videogames
>about to start videogame
>mfw i can't because now i feel that learning japanese is more fun than playing videogames
>go back to learning

is this how it begins?

Imagine if you can the point at which the two activities are no longer mutually exclusive, and the time you spend playing videogames is also time spent learning Japanese.

/jp/ has blanket inclusion for most things related to otaku culture, and the Japanese language is definitely part of that. The mods would be right cunts for not allowing us.

i'm getting close to that point. i'm getting sick of playing english videogames because that just derails my learning. at what point did you start to use japanese games for learning? after 1000 kanji?

Well, I mean, they already did that. When another anon asked them a few days ago, one of the mods said he was considering /jp/, but according to the mod who posted on /qa/, DJT stays on /int/, so I'm going to need some actual arguments this time.

>Im sick of learning japanese how do I motivate myself?

You need to reinforce yourself on why you're learning the language. Are you trying to just play videogames? If you're just trying to consume japanese media and don't plan on actually talking to japanese people, learning the language isn't worth it

Tell lme why you have to learn Japanese
>>
>>68112509
You can play the Pokemon games with 0 kanji.
>>
>>68112568
>how do I motivate myself?
You don't. You just keep reading or talking in Japanese until you reach to the point where you don't have to learn Japanese.
>>
>>68112509
>1000 kanji?
kek. Maybe after 8k words. You won't get anywhere if you only study kanji individually

I would like to talk to some japanese people but I don't know any. And reading too long in japanese makes my head hurt.

My japanese isn't even THAT bad, Im on the path to preparing N2, Im just depressed that I still come across stuff I don't know so often, eventhough I already spent a long time studying.
I feel like the more I know the more I realize how much I suck.

You're almost N2 and haven't made any japanese friends yet? Even online?

the fuck
>>
>>68113032

>>
>>68113123

I made (online) japanese friends before I even started learning the language. this was like 2 years ago. I started seriously learning two months ago so i can talk to them better, and am cram studying like you I imagine.

>3 of them are girls and the only man is like my best friend now
>mfw he's gonna die in a couple of years and i will have to go to japan to attend his funeral

it's not really hard to make japanese friends. you're just going to have to find a japanese website you like, even if it's some stupid fucking facebook game, and start making friends there.

basically just immerse yourself in japanese. your brain will learn to sink or swim later.

People who study for JLPT only have limited knowledge on the actual language rather than those who speak it everyday.

ie. japs who study English for TOEIC, or poos for IELTS
>>
>>68113123
Also, I don't want to take away your ability to interact with japanese girls, but FINAL FANTASY XIV Is a realistic option

Final Fantasy XIV will give you a chance to practice your japanese with others and make friends. They won't be lasting friendships and you won't meet any girls, but it should be enough to get you started.

There's a free trial for the game. Go on a JP server and just dive right in.

http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/

Again, i probably wouldn't reccomend it because MMORPG friendships don't tend to blossom into anything meaningful that you're probably looking for in life, but it should be enough to get you started if you absolutely refuse to try social games
>>
>>68113708
When do i have to worry about the JLPT anyway?

Should I start taking it after I get my associate's? I'll need to be N1 before applying for a japanese work visa I think.
>>
Is going to /jp/ even worth it?

Twice a year, actually. JLPT site lists two dates.

Is it even possible? To take and pass the JLPT next year even though i just started seriously learning two months ago?

Second test (December): Around August-September

N3 would look nice on a resume, but N2 and N1 are going to get you in Japan. Personally, I'd say go for N3 (unless you somehow get up to N2 level before the next test) so you can put it on a resume even if you decide to give up on Japanese and not to go to Japan, but definitely start taking it as soon as you can.
>>
What does the N stand for anyway
>>
>>68114308
er, i can't actually go to japan until i get a bachelor's degree. you should know that. i'm about 3 years from a bachelor's degree so that gives me 2017 JLPT, 2018 JLPT, and probably the 2019 JLPT which i might actually take twice.

So let's say I get N3 next year, i can re-take the test and attempt N2/N1 in 2018?

If in the future I do manage to get N1, i'll start preparing for the EJU.

I have a master plan.

The japanese government offers Monbukagakusho scholarships to graduates looking to study in japan. Post-graduate study, i.e. using what you learned to get a job

They offer this to about 4,000 people a year

http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0302e-10.html

The scholarship includes a 6-month period of preliminary japanese learning, but if i'm N1 i'll be able to skip that requirement.

In any case, i'll be able to continue my computer science studies in japan and use it to land a job somewhere reputable in Japan.

Doing this on a student visa allows me to job search in Japan regardless, which increases my chances of being hired.

>When do i have to worry about the JLPT anyway?
When your job tells you you have to learn Japanese. Other than that, it's nothing but polish for your resume. Even if you passed N1 and Kentei 1, but all the Japanese in your company can speak English and that your company requires you to speak English only, then it's useless. Most official translation jobs requires you to live in Japan for at least 3 years or more to be qualified.

>>68114146
>Is it even possible? To take and pass the JLPT next year even though i just started seriously learning two months ago?
Yes. You can even take the same level twice even though you've passed as long as you pay for the exam.

i'll be doing a computer science degree which qualifies me for an engineering work visa in japan

i'll probably get into some kind of international company or something

>require you to live in Japan for at least 3 years or more to be qualified

A Master's Degree would be enough for this requirement, but i can't afford that shit. even in nippon. student loans don't exist in japan so i have no idea how they get master's degrees there.
