why?

>Keeping the wealth circulating in the UK instead of sending it abroad, is also good for the economy.

that's not how trade works. protectionism means less wealth for everyone

>It also prevents the "race to the bottom" where workers in different countries are pitted against one another for lower and lower standards while the owners walk away with massive profits.

ah yes, producing things more effectively is bad now, gotcha

again, why should i subsidise machine operators' lifestyles if polish ones can do it just as well?

>At the time Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979, decades of statist policies had turned Britain into the sick man of Europe. The government owned the big manufacturing firms in industries such as autos and steel. The top individual MTRs on income were 83 percent on "earned income" and an eye-popping 98 percent on income from capital. Frequent labor strikes paralyzed transportation and led to garbage piling up in the streets of London. Much of the housing stock was government-owned. Britain had lagged other European economies for decades, growing far more slowly than most economies on the continent. Thatcher's reforms were among the most comprehensive in the world, and by the mid-1980s, Britain was growing faster than the other major European economies. By 2008, it had a higher per capita income than Germany, France, and Italy.

First nobody actually paid the top rates of taxation, so it's a point without meaning.

Britain's growth being inferior to other countries was because capital controls were the most liberal in Britain compared to France and Germany where they were far more strict.

Britain's GDP growth was faster in the 30 years before Thatcher than the 30 years after Thatcher. The large fleet of social housing kept house/rent prices down which redirected income to the non-rentier, productive side of the economy. Selling off the social housing, just meant more and more income going to landlords who aren't producing new goods and services.

The Labour strikes were what gave British workers decent pay, working conditions, safety for consumers etc. Since the destruction of the unions, workers have fallen further and further behind.

there was a worldwide slowdown in growth in the 1970s. what matters is who grew the fastest relative to other countries, and that was britain post thatcher

>The Labour strikes were what gave British workers decent pay, working conditions

that might have been true in an earlier era, but in the 1970s they lead mostly to civil unrest and stagflation

That's exactly my point.

There's no such thing as "post-war rebound". The success after WW2 was due to policy changes like demand management in the economy. After WW1, they kept everything the same and it created the biggest depression ever.
>>66935936
People turned to Neoliberalism because of high inflation that was created by the Saudis quadrupling the oil price. Not because the underlying economics were bad.

Neoliberals promised faster economic growth, better productivity growth, better wage growth and higher employment.

They failed on every front. They also created the biggest economic inequality ever, the biggest debt ever. Even inflation (the one "success" of neoliberalism) originally went form 10% to 20%.

It was a chaotic failure. Neoliberalism doesn't work.

not in britain

britain returned to the gold standard after WW1 at a very inflated exchange rate which left britain in deflation for most of the 20s (kind of like what greece is going through now)

britain was one of the first countries to drop the gold standard in the 30s and as a result one of the quickest to recover

>Argentina
They denominated their national debt in USD which created a giant capital account crisis. Denominating your debt in a foreign currency is exactly what the IMF, World Bank and other Neoliberals tell you to do.

>Venezuela
The country was more backward before Chavez and was under massive sanctions.
>>66936193
>It was a worldwide economic clusterfuck that started in 1929, for most of the 20s there was a period of sustained growth
Yes because the "roaring 20s" were debt fueled growth created by tight government budgets and "sound money" (gold standard insanity). In the post-WW2 era, private debt was kept very low through extremely high budget deficits.
