So I got some questions about screentones as I keep experimenting around to find the style.

I used this guide:

To get this effect, which is fine for a digital webcomic, as it has that manga "feel" of screentones. However, the dots here are greyed to get the color, rather than being actual screentones.

Now, this method is great, as I could literally paint things in greyscale, and then use the various patterns to create screentones, and in fact it offers me a LOT of flexibility.

However, how does this factor in when it comes to printing? It's NOT the same as real screentones. Anyone have any exp?

I flat out do NOT like the preset screentones in Manga Studio/CSP, the dots are too big even at the smallest setting, and it looks like ass when you rasterize. Not only that, but it doesn't let you properly layer screentones (and if you reduce the size/quality - which is necessary for digital formats - it will even EAT entire layers of tones).

I think this method is great, as it translates well with what I already know about painting, and could push what I can do much further, my only concern printing/costs down the line.

I think that would be funy because it is pretty much the opposite of what you would expect. I just got to this thread, and I'm not the other guys who are saying it's shit, it really isn't but it isn't special. Drawing well constantly is a step, drawing unique is a skill. It takes skill and courage to draw something different each time that pen touches your canvas.

If you really want to get impressed and inspired by someone's work, see if they can make polished work that all look different and unique from each other, that's what I'm saying. Seeing the others saying it's shit because it has sameface syndrome isn't good, because the craftsmanship is indeed good, but they are right the artist behind it shouldn't comfort zone himself doing the same simple facial design every time. Hell he could have at least threw a male subject in there somewhere, just to see what else he can do.

Just saying, he should experiment more. He also shouldn't post pictures for the sake of posting when critiquing is the point of this board, if he doesn't want any form a feedback other than dicksucking. That is if that was his ambition, and I hope the people wanking off the comments that seemed negative to you folk follow suit to this advice as well.

I've read that good cartoons depict an action rather than a character, but even when I know who I want to draw, I can never come up with something for them to do.

Anyone have any tips for coming up with action when doodling from imagination? Not gesture poses where the character isn't actually doing anything, but mundane actions that can communicate the personality of a character

I often feel like images like these blow up the expressiveness. It might be more prevalent in western animation than anime because in anime, when someone's standing. They're standing and that's it, why else you want them to be doing some other crazy thing like expressing themselves? In my opinion, it depends on whether or not you want them to be the focus to communicate something without words. It's like a person staring out the window, what are they thinking of? Do they have a gloomy face? A happy face? Are they listening to music? But you wouldn't care if they weren't in the focus and just a BG character.

I feel like that's a pretty sweeping assumption to make about all anime, and there are plenty of western animations you could say the exact same thing about. Expressiveness is never a bad thing, at least in stylized works, but in cases where time and budget are an issue then it can't always be made a priority. You made the common comic mistake of drawing the same panel twice. Work on your perspectives. The middle panels very well done as you fit multiple actions inside of it such as the girl reaching for cash while talking to the cashier. The last panel is confusing. I can tell he's locking the door but next time why not show a shot of his hands locking it. As a comic it's good on a beginner level but in terms of anatomy and lines you could use a lot of practice.

So, I absolutely adore the coloring styles of Kishida Mel (left) and Hidari (right), as well as their line work -- Not necessarily the anatomy, but the way their lines look with their coloring. I know Kishida Mel works almost entirely digitally, but I can't figure out how to actually replicate it, let alone make it my own. The same goes for Hidari and his earth tones. Either way, absolutely gorgeous. Any ideas on how Kishida Mel gets such smoooooooooth transitions of various colors, or how Hidari makes his coloring look like it's done with acrylic colored pencils? I figured stylization people would be who to ask.

i'd change jus a few things about the face, namely make the lips be more in profile an redo the far eye an eyebrow to give a bit more form to the face as well but still, love the over all piece (especially how you swooped the far shoulder seein as that's a thing i do a lot cause i like the flow it adds to the shoulders)

love the idea but saw a few things that could use some work

i'll try an bullet point what i did an why from the top down

-ears put more into perspective relative to the changes i made to the head, curved them a bit out of personal taste
-head/hair shape are one in the same imo, or at the very least the hair silhouette should echo the underlying form of the head
-brought the eye in a bit an rotated it to help with the form of the skull
-modified the snout. i like to think of the cheekbone as extending into the snout itself, helps give that nice full feeling to the skull on furry type creatures
-i also redid some curves on the bottom of the head as it meets the neck to help with the flow

-fixed tray arm proportions more for my sake sense i kno you already did it yourself
-slightly curved the inner part of the straight arm to keep it moving so to speak. curve implies it's swinging in an arc where as the two straight lines made it feel like it was moving straight forward (think superman flying)
-FLOOFED UP THE TAIL CAUSE I LIKE FLOOFY TAILS
-fixed proportions on the far leg, also added some curve to it to help keep it moving as well

looks like you forgot to turn the lineart layer back on, forshortening is completely lost on the legs thanks to the kneecap not reading clearly against the lower abdomen, shape of the big toe on their left foot (also our left) feels wrong like the inner line of the form doesn't curve properly to have that werid bulbousy big toe shape like on the other foot
