You made his face look wider. Also... It looks too tilted. And his hair looks too... Voluminously upward?

I'm not sure if I can give you this advice but when I copy from portraits I measure stuffs autistically with plumb lines/outward angles like Bargue. I get great results from it but it's pretty slow and tiresome. It works, but /ic/ tells me that it's autistic.

Granted my level of eyeballing isn't that accurate so I do it. I don't know if there's a better method but doing observational studies rely on relative proportions so...

I really think that these kinds of advice isn't good for newbies, especially not this Loomis book since it's badly organised; he/she is obviously stuck because they are doing the exercise badly. Making them go further will fuck up their foundations if they can't manage to understand how the most basic of the exercises works. Doing shit that they don't even know why they're doing them may lead them internalising bad habits.

It's like in maths, don't play with algebra before mastering arithmetics or you'll be in for a tough time.

>>3119286
Anon, the point is not to copy 1-1 of the plates. Plate 1 tells you how and why to construct the head from the ball and then the crosspoint, then how the middle line extends through the ball in order to create the chin. It didn't teach you about the facial features placement? Because that's not what you're supposed to do. You're going to learn that later. If Loomis made no comment about it, don't do it.

I assume the reason Loomis put in facial features is because he wanted to showcase you how the ball will be used later on. He always does that and it's confusing a fuck I know. Just a reminder that you should following the text while analysing and copying the plates on the go. If there's no text for a plate? Don't do it and go to the next plate.
>>
>>3119286
So in a way... You overdid it.

If you want more feedback putting in the number of plate you're doing so I can have an easier time checking how well you did. The most essential skill for Loomis' books is actually reading comprehension.

How do you make yourself draw when you don't want to?
>>
>>3119359
Why would you want to draw if you don't want to? Is it to get good, but to what end?

If you don't find it fun then don't do it; drawing is a hobby. Never forget that if you want to keep it enjoyable.

Some might have more fun drawing while talking to someone, others when they join a group or a challenge, some are more motivated if they had been given a task like an assignment. The answer? It depends.

And drawing mindlessly won't make you improve, so forcing yourself to doodle isn't a good idea.
>>
>>3119367
I used to avoid making drawings cuz I hated the way they turned out. but once is got better and my drawing became "nicer" I really started enjoying drawing
>>
>>3119359
I remind myself failing to improve means I'll never achieve my dreams and be stuck in a dead end job.
>>
>>3119370
Find out the cause of why you're not willing to draw. Is it because you're stagnating in terms of skills/design? Is it because you haven't been given enough attention?

Sometimes when these two happens to me I lose my motivation, I normally regain my motivation when I suddenly gain an inspiration to create; and when those moments do happen they do so spontaneously.

For problem 1, I try to figure out what was wrong with my drawing and try to correct it, sometimes by asking advice/critique and at other times checking in the anatomy reference books (I personally use Goldfinger's book and online references for mistake checking).

Of course, the process isn't always pleasant but once it's done I feel the curse of frustration has been undone.

If I don't do it what happens is a stack of shitty, uncorrected drawing forms by itself, making me feel like crap.

I always remind myself of that, and that in order to avoid that happening, I've made a habit to always learn to correct my own drawings. Of course, I don't do it for every drawings I've made, especially not random doodles but mostly for the serious ones.

Doing this gives me gains and my motivation drops more slowly. Good luck!

>>
>>3119367
Not him, but for me most of the time drawing feels like a chore because I hate almost everything I draw. It's disappointing, frustrating and embarrassing, and it can really drain any motivation I have if it goes on for too long. But on the occasion I actually draw something I'm proud of, even if it's just a fluke, it feels amazing. I'm just hoping that I can get past this shitty amateur phase and feel that more often than not.

why would you do still life from photos? this is one of those instances where drawing from life really is better. get some random fruit and knick knacks from your house and paint that instead.

also, your painting clearly shows a massive lack of patience. those kinds of paintings take many hours, days, weeks even for elite artists. it's not just cell-shading a bottle and calling it done.

photo studies, life studies, fundamental learning books, and applying what you learned from your studies by drawing from imagination. do this for many hours (at least 3+ bare fucking minimum) everyday, for about 3-6 years, depending how many hours you choose to do.

that's it. that's how you achieve that. just remember, in your life you've probably done maybe 200 serious drawings, out of those probably 10 serious observational studies. while that artist probably did 5,000 serious drawings, and 1,000 observational studies. that's the only difference between you. fucking draw. a lot.

Your painting is dead. What time of day is it suppose to be? It looks like you made a new layer at 10% opacity and smeared black all over the shadow side of that building. Saturate your colors. Those light sources in the windows need to be really bright. Foreground needs more contrast. Think there is too much atmospheric perspective, it gets foggy really quick. Study how light works from cityscape photographs and hudson river school paintings.

There are an endless number of jobs that aren't "dead end", that aren't creative jobs. If you have to force yourself to draw in the early stages, you're not going to make it. Art is a calling, it's something people sacrifice other things in life, to be able to do it. Any decent artist I've ever met never had to force themselves to draw - they drew all the time, without even thinking about it, loved it, and did it every opportunity they could.
If you're using art as a means to an end, ie. "get a job", I would HIGHLY suggest you find something else as a career. Something you actually LIKE doing.

Do another level of detail and polish. It's rather loose, you could tweak your contrasts, and refine your textures, edges, and colors.
>>
>>3119782
Develop some more line confidence. This is a good foundation to do a finished, refined drawing on top of.
>>
>>3119810
Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look for some value/form tutorials. Now that you mentioned it I'm starting to see where I went wrong, especially with the shading.

>>3119819
Thank you, I'll try out some exercises for that. I always end up guessing which lines to draw over for the final image, so having a cleaner sketch would definitely help with that.

I worked on my midtones more this time.
I think that my problem was that I was just finding areas of extreme darkness and light and then blending them together, while forgetting about inbeetwen values.
Tell me if it's any better than my previous studies.
>>
>>3119783
Get out of the beginner thread, but since you're here.

It's definitely a good drawing but the color looks pretty flat and unsure. I think you need to push your values more. Darker shading, brighter highlights. Maybe consider touching up the line work as well. More variety of thickness.
>>
>>3119838
They're still a little off - if you squint your eyes and look at them, so they're blurry, you can see areas where you're using the same values, especially the middle image - there's a lot of contrast missing in yours. You need to try working tighter, too - you're getting in the ballpark for some of the values, but because the paintings are so loose, you're losing volume and shape. I think you're on the right track, though.

What I do is I draw it first then when I'm down I will go back and overlay them and on my paper I will write in red ink where I went bad.

It doesn't answer your question but maybe you can consider doing that instead. I feel it is at least slightly better than tracing and probably easier to do going digital since you can just have the reference underneath and overlay on the fly.

Is tracing really that bad ?
I mean after analyzing the drawing you trace over it to feel the curves and get a better grasp of the thing, and THEN try to do a classic study followed by drawing from memory.
>>
>>3120260
tracing wont help you feel the forms that built those curves.
>>
Is it really that bad for me to try and draw heads a bunch instead of doing boring vases and things? I understand the value of doing that stuff but I don't really feel like drawing them usually and just draw what I feel like.

I think they *were* talking about tracing in the general sense.

Like, for example, tracing an ass doesn't help you understand the volume of it, or how it connects the leg and the back, or why it's bearing weight, etc.

>>
>>3120513
I dont exactly know what you mean but in photos there is blurs where its out of focus but drawing from life there isn't (I think)
>>
>>3120341
Chest it way too big, as is the head. You need to spend some time learning basic proportions, and how to measure. Then, spend some time on the shoulder, how it's constructed, and the pelvic region. You keep making the same mistakes, each time.
>>
>>3120513
Eyes work differently from cameras. You can always tell when someone has copied a photo.
>>
>>3120513

Lens distortion, contrast, lack of detail and colour in shadows, depth of field, and various other camera effects.

Some obvious stuff is the blown out right foot and lack of light in the hair.

Only real way to deal with that is to be aware of the differences between a camera and your eyes, and to be trained well enough to compensate.

>>3120508

Your drawing is totally off, you need to be much more patient, take as long as it takes to get it right. There's a general lack of understanding of form and construction, and an unfamiliarity with the anatomy of the face.

I can see you're trying to tile some value steps in, but you don't understand the form well enough to properly represent the planes and you're filling in the blanks with your imagination, which doesn't work. Your jumps in value and choice of hue are way off too. She has a very smooth, complex lighting which can be very subtle and hard to design without an understanding of what you're trying to represent.

My advice to you is to work on basic drawing skills, study construction, get some practice by copying pictures out of stuff like Loomis and Bridgman. If you want to practice painting, try something beginner friendly. A simple, well-lit still life, with one hard light source is ideal, so you have well defined shadow shapes to copy. Like an apple or a vase or something. Paint some cubes and cylinders or whatnot too, you really need to understand basic 3D forms if you want to paint. Do mostly monochrome/greyscale stuff too. Value and edge are the key to painting.

Line confidence is drawing a line purposefully and carefully, so it doesn't have to be replaced later. You should leave chicken scratching behind as you progress, if you're still doing it, you're not progressing. But hey, if you want to waste time and effort every time you pick up a pencil, go for it. Just don't expect to bring that bad habit into a professional context.

What >>3120667 said...

You didn't apply what you've learn or you think that study is just meant to be 1:1 copy. It's not. Study is studying a certain part of the painting whether it's form, value, color, or style.

And then you apply that knowledge to your own work. I think what you've doing so far is just observation practice. You're not really doing any "studying".

Well, you are rusty as fuck, it was to be expected. You have a lot of tiny mistakes, like the arms being too small, the pose being too stiff, the muscles not being where they are.....Next time use references, or practice more beforehand.

How do I create fundamental forms?
boxes are fine but I'm struggling with ellipses. Are they just circles confined on a plane? Does anyone have any tips?

i like the foot, looks dope, but one important thing: your guy would fall forward

straighten his chest area more and bring his butt out a little bit to balance it out.. his right thigh is also too small, you can't see cause of the black undie but that top part of his leg connects with his waist.. feel up your own leg to see what im talking about, while in your drawing it seems as though it's heading towards his crotch, like you confused the top of his thigh for the inner right side of it..

bretty good for 15/20 min, better than I could do, but i'd like to see it finished

i don't understand the circlejerk around starting with digital

your line quality is so pitying that it's embarassing, using a medium that's easier to hone your dexterity with will help you learn more efficiently compared to something you picked up a week ago. but it's your choice, make sure to read the sticky
>>
>>3120995
i don't know any circlejerk i just live in an environment where it's impossible to draw traditionally.

and what do you mean by using a medium i only just picked up? i have never drawn before and i have never drawn in my childhood either except for middle school forced "art"classes one hour once a week.

i have no fucking experience in traditional at all nor "digital" i don't use any fucking fancy tools for my "digital" work i don't ever press the undo button nor do i use any pen stabilizer i literally handle it as if i would draw "traditionally" so it literally doesn't make any fucking difference (i have a display tablet)

and i will never work "traditionally" ever in my life anyways i just want to create fart fetishes or something for commisions so i can make 100$ a month which is enough for me to survive

Stop using soft lead on pieces that have a high degree of detail, like reflections in glass. Try using a 1b and a 1s, to establish the value range, and use the harder lead for the details and delicate areas. Work on your edges. Work on your gradients. Glass is challenging because of it's smooth gradients and subtlties.
>>
>>3121183
Sorry, make that a 1b and 1h.

Using a 2b and a 4b is great for gesture work, or any kind of expressive work, like figure studies, but for realistic drawings, you want to use harder leads, and establish your range ahead of time, like using on pencil only, which will limit your values, or using two pencils, which are a couple steps away from each other, which expands your tonal range. You're not doing photorealism here, so your darkest value can be a grey, not an absolute black.

Your palette is too limited/ You have all cool colors, you need warms in there as well. Basic white skin tone is more peach than anything, you need warm oranges and yellows and pinks in the warm areas (highlights and lit areas). The colors you have are fine for the cool parts (shadows).

Nice dimensions to them but focus more on the rhythm. You'll find more forceful, elegant lines by slowing down your pencil and thinking before you put each one. Think of gestures less on a time crunch and more on a line crunch at first, you'll get more bang for your buck. These aren't bad for quick studies - you're moving towards capturing and framing the form - but with gestures movement is key. Let loose simplicity speak for itself on gestures.
>>
>>3121415
I'm doing Vilppu technique but i cant draw good rhythm of gesture. I always start from head, shoulders and lines in the middle, where spine is and then draw the same rhythm by sides and correct.

You're making the chin too elongated, which in turn makes it seem like the cranium is too small.

I'd say look at some tutorials about head proportions.

>>
>>3121625
You don't have a drawing problem. You have a discipline problem.
>>
Is there a point to reading literally any of those art books in the sticky? Pretty much all those books, from what I've skimmed, say "draw from real life" but rewritten a thousand different times. Psychobabble doesn't even begin to describe it.

What books actually have the stones to tell me how to draw correctly? As in going step by step how I should be drawing?
>>
>>3121650
do you want the book to describe line for line what you should draw or what. Keys to drawing has a lot of excellent lessons for how to see and draw what you see, and some others cover the construction (and therefore imagination) aspect.
>>
>>3121650
What do you think drawing is? Drawing from nothing? Obviously it's going to tell you to draw from real life, you can't avoid it. Your imagination is still weak.
>>
>>3121649
How can I fix it?
>>
>>3121657
>>3121661
Yeah but I mean like "start with the head" level stuff. "Draw an outline first" "Try use thin lines for clothes" shit like that. These books at a glance are 300 pages of preachy "It's just a gift" bullshit. They keep going on that it's skill and then never actually start saying how to start that skill.
>>
>>3121671
not that anon but I have a serious discipline problem thanks to a lot of reasons
but I am slowly, but surely, fixing it by dedicating x amount of time a day, and each week increasing that amount of time.
some days I really don't wanna, just want to play video games all day or some shit, but I hammer it into my head every single day I need to DRAW.
write sticky notes, chuck em places, set a note on your phone saying "DRAW". make sure you don't forget.
>>
>>3121672
you didn't read hard enough then because lots of books in the sticky go exactly through that. Since keys to drawing is the one I have the most experience with, I can tell you for example that it has stuff like "start with the outer countour", or "focus on an area of the drawing that you want to emphasize". Of course, it varies because each book will focus on a different method of drawing, and mixing them will make you a more complete artist.
>>
>>3121683
I'm asking which ones go through that, I glanced through a few they it was all the same shit for the first 50 pages. Which ones.
>>
>>3121685
I'd say starting with keys to drawing is a very good approach.

Damn i got a flawless method for drawing faces and other thing. You just gotta connect the dots bro. even with a mouse this drawing looks pretty good
really makes you realise that drawing is all about your perception skills, your ability to see. you can do beutiful ms paint drawing with just the line tool if you are good at seeing relationships and measuring distance and angles
>>
>>3121843
>flawless method
>literally a method from Keys to Drawing
It's like people here don't even read the book. Much less use the techniques described.
>>
I've asked numerous drawfags what they use to draw bodies, and they all say Vilppu. Is there any image guides to Vilppu or will I need to go through videos?
>>
>>3121685
You don't glance through them. You do studies from their plates. If you aren't seeing that make sense after a few pages, skim to later in the book and try from there. You're not getting anything from them because you think they're books where the words are what teach you.

Art texts are the opposite of other textbooks. Instead of the pictures being there to supplement the words the words supplement the pictures.

From observation it seems that you need to be better at rendering than anything else. Of course you still need to be decent in everything else. But above all else it appears to me that rendering is king.
