IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

Ignoring le pen0r, you're making the face way to large compared to the head. it's left arm (our right) is too large proportionally while the other is too small proportionally. Also the torso seems stretched vertically.

I think my drawing progression has started to plateau.

I'd like to take up sculpting in an effort better understand 3d forms and branch out into another medium aside from ink and graphite.

Anyone out there know of a good youtube channel or video lecture that cover pottery, sculpting figurines of clay, etc?
>>
>>3078351
Shit, I purged my channels recently, Thomas Mason is good for minis, Lore chirik has a few videos, as does sculpture_geek but I'm struggling to remember the other couple of good subscriptions I had for tutorials. Might not be up your alley but ultimate papermache has some rather impressive builds using paper mache clay and the like for more details.
>>
>>3078363
Thanks for the quick reply. Finding a place to start is always the hardest part, ya know.
>>
>>3078351
>>3078363
Oh and I definitely recommend messing around with home made paper clay for larger things with more detail, super sculpey fimo and greenstuff are rather expensive, sculpey and fimo can easily warp/slump when baking so be careful once going on to that and support thin objects when baking (aluminum foil is britty gud). Though You may want to study up on Blender or start with Sculptrix before moving to blender for 3d modelling (Sculptrix is very intuitix but doesn't convert to blender files nicely. Blender Guru is great for learning though.

fuck are the ic police gonna get pissed I'm not talking bout the drawing?
>>
>>3078368
For starting literally wing it. find something you're interested in that you can find multiple references for from other angles. If it's smalle make an armature out of high gauge wire (~25 - 30) if lerger than a tabletop mini use aluminum wire and get the shape with aluminum foil (saves a ton of money and is used in the industry. If you want a smooth texture use a clay (if paper clay smooth with water, if polymer use isopropyl alcohol, it'll also remove fingerprints) if you want a melty or goopy texture use hot glue (look at some videos from DMscraft, Drunkens&Dragons and Miniature Mashup for techniques more geared towards D&D and tabletop games)

sry man

Did this hand and tried to get close to steve hustons one in the interview, added the knife and roses..how is the final version?
>>
>>3078457
The hand is very wrong, it's all fingers no palm. The wrist shows the bottom but the hand shows it's side, there's some perspective to work with and I think it's the wrist that should be rotated away from the viewer. The knife is all wiggle and the roses very flat with lines not meeting up to complete the petals.
>>
>>3078472
I don't think the all fingers no palm holds true here, if you look at it from the ref it's about there there. The perspective could be off but could you please redline for me what you thought was wrong please? Knife is all wiggle and you mean the line is not one smooth stroke? I learned to do it like that and it kinda stuck with me. The roses are flat you mean the solid block that is the shadows? I didn't want to complete the lines of the petals desu. Cheers man thnx for crit

Autism is tediously copying every single line from a sketch a real artist drew in the 1800s.
I've just noticed that animators like aaron blaise, and oldman vilppu are such a clear cut above instagram photocopiers. These guys can truly draw anything they want. Even guys like robertson who know perspective inside and out are pretty cool.

refine her nostrils, they look too small and slanted at an opposing angle that her face is actually holding.

lower eyelid is bumpy for no reason. smooth it out to keep the angle of her face looking sharp.
i'm not really sure what's going on with the right iris either, you've left a smudge that makes it look broken.

clean up her forehead so the smudges aren't obvious.

Maybe a little more definition in the hair, but that's arguably an aesthetic choice.

Overall, I like it. the use of positive and negative space is interesting, it could probably benefit from little more work tho

Two tips:

1. work harder in your sketch. this will prevent stuff like the wrong eye position and wrong meaures in general

2. use a B2 pencil to stabilish a mid-gray tone. unless this is a vampire, her skin should not be white (or paper yellow-ish). only the highlights should be white.

(although you're not symbol drawing, which is really good)

If you want detail, modeling wax is the best solution. It can hold an very high level of detail, can hold a large amount of weight with no armature, and can be made pliable like clay when worked with the hands, and cools to a hard form, and can be polished/carved/inscribed for texture.
There's also resin based modeling clays that are excellent for holding a high level of detail.

You can but it'll be different. I'd suggest knowing how to draw on paper first because you'll be struggling to learn to draw and struggling to learn the nuances of a program and tablet features all at once otherwise. My work became considerably worse when switching to a tablet and I'm still trying to get the hang of it fully to be on the level I was with just paper.
>>
>>3079012
Ctrl+Z, the warp tool and moving parts around can be a crutch if you use it too much. Paper helps you build line confidence and efficiency a lot faster, especially if you're doing everything in pen.

your technique doesnt even approximate properly. I mean besides from the usualy advice im going to say dont rush it. none of the hair is drawn with the same level of details. im the second one you did some shading under the lip but no where else? why.

Focus on 3d, look at the seconds brows. they dont appear to protrude at all. the ears also too low, look at its height relation to the mouth.

With the pupils dont centre them, theyre clearly looking in a different direction. The first one doesnt even have pupils drawn properly.

No it is fine to do that. Academic drawing IS glorified tracing.
Your goal with these studies is to improve your perception skills, and the best way to see how close you are is it pull your drawing over the ref. Outright tracing is only a nono if you were trying to put these studies in your portfolio, or trying to pass this off as your own work. For example you'd have to credit the photography for your drawing.

oh sure, if i was drawing the vase in front of me i'd start with a cylinder or something maybe, for my final i have to pretty much make it accurate 1 to 1 so it's not exactly tracing but there's no point (i don't think) in building the vase from shapes.

Anatomy is best learned in labs where you look at human cadavers and attempt to move them and tutors come around to tell you what part of the cadaver you are poking at.

(((There are a tone of anatomy apps like Essential Anatomy 5 which is popular amongst med students but TheAnatomyZone on youtube is entirely free https://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnatomyZone/videos and uses those 3D apps. I think it's a lot more detail than an artist needs to know.)))
--------------------------------------------------
Still, the NUMBER 1 source of anatomy images is Google Images.
Surface Anatomy - if you are looking for anatomical landmarks underneath the skin.
www.getbodysmart.com which I used a bit in my undergrad is very simple and clear

The NUMBER 2 source of anatomy is Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy 6th Edition (download this off libgen). These are medically accurate rendered illustrations with labels. However again, it is in a lot of detail so only focus on large muscles like the biceps, triceps, deltoids etc YOU WILL NOT NEED TO KNOW SMALL MUSCLES.

If you come to something like the palm muscles of the hand you will notice that there are multiple layers. You only really need the superficial layers (that is, the layer most close to the skin)
-------------------------------------------------
For my undergrad, I mostly used Anatomedia (A general rule of thumb with academic e-resources is that no matter what discipline you are doing you should be able to access every other disciplines, so if you are a student and your institution has a subscription you should definitely be able to access it no matter what subject you are from). This basically goes over the highest yield points of anatomy in terms of what does what and the most prominent bony landmarks and you can virtually dissect specimens and stuff. It's pretty cool if not laggy.

3D. There are more mainstream jobs for it in multiple fields, especially with 3D printing.

>And does a good 3D artist need to be good with 2D?

It definitely helps. Beyond drawing, a 3D artist often has to build scenes, and the same principles apply - lighting, color, rendering, composition. A solid foundation in 2D cannot hurt you. You don't have to be master level, but you should have the fundamentals.

What kind of trouble? You fucking have them side by side, you switched the original into black and white, it's literally just copying what you see at this point. The hand and the head are too big, but I'm sure you see it. Also, the point of this study in the Noah Bradley's video was to draw a readable b&w thumbnail to study composition. You can do it in full size to study values I guess, but 1) the details aren't that important then, 2) you shouldn't turn the original into black and white, 3) why not do it in color?

Her left cheek and brow extend further than the reference. As to colouring, more pinks/reds should be in the skin tone on the right cheek and her top left of the forehead. Add lighter highlights to the jawline and neck. Oh sweet, how have I gone this long without knowing about this website. Thanks for the info. :0

Page 48, he revisits the quick set up with foreshortening

Yeah, you can view it as the bottom half being halved again and the top half being split into thirds. He introduces a lot of rough height landmarks, like nipples at 2/3 of the overall figure, but I wouldn't get too caught up on them. Don't shy away from placing things slightly differently even if it's clearly outside its "designated" spot; sometimes you get some awkward perspectives or shifts in your figures, but nothing wrong with rolling with them

I sort of sketch the recommended landmarks in advance, just single lines, and then try to work towards them I guess, but as you can see I redraw lines enough for my whole page to get smudged up (although not as visible on the image), so who knows whether you should go about it like me. Although what I do recommend is at least marking the foot level, so you know what height you're working with.

My attempt at manga style lineart. I know jack shit about lighting or the human figure so these are the proportions I came up with. It's always disturbing just how good the guys in the alternative art/non-beginner generals are.

Critiques would be appreciated. Done with mouse.

Actually impressed, kinda want to see what you'd be able to make with those animation skills once your drawing skills catch up

That head turn though.

Haha, yeah. You will be really embarassed, if I'd tell you how much time i spent on this cardboardish turn.

So, I started to study pictures/paintings and often I end up continuing further without the ref, is this a decent exercise? I feel like its sorta like copying, but at the same time I enjoy doing it.

pic is an example

The whole point is not copying but learning. That's why it's called study. Analyze the face planes, form , anatomy and lighting. Going further on your own with limited knowledge is pointless.

If you want to do that do it on a completely new drawing from imagination. Doing that will tell you what you DON'T know right away. Like a wake up slap.
>>
>>3081406

Really get the gesture down first before moving on. If you can, download Michael Hampton video lesson from CGP. It's much clearer with him explaining every steps.

Week 1 is all about gesture.

How do I draw good circles
>>
>>3081639
Yeah, I try to do the analyze part, but I also enjoy the whole refining process.

I guess i just need to man up and try things out of the comfort zone, like imagination drawings.

Thanks anon.

Do you think is better to study only one subject per day (perspective, anatomy, drawing for life, etc) or to have them mixed?
>>

it doesnt matter

Fucking humans are so complicated.

On the bright side the more I look at the face and head shape the more bumps and dips and stuff start to make sense

You're drawing content that's way above your skill level.
>>
>>3080908
I'd try a better source, that one is washed out.

Go watch oil painting portrait videos on Youtube, and watch how they approach color, and use it. That's the best reference, honestly.

Drawing from the shoulder is one way to draw. It has it's time and place. Large drawings, on easels is usually when it's applicable. You can also draw from the elbow, and from the wrist ad fingers, for smaller areas and detail. If your shoulder hurts, stop. You can mess your shoulder up that way. And yes, you have to build up muscles to work that way for an extended time - my first figure drawing class, my arm would be wrecked after. By the end of the semester, I could go for hours.

>>3081706
With the circle tool in your app, or a compass.

You can practice freehanding them, by drawing a box, and drawing one inside it, but it's not that crucial to freehand.

I found a better video. Watch this. It's one of the better digital portrait videos I've found. Watch how he uses cool and warm colors, and especially watch how he does the hair.
