This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies, however, all forms of stylization is welcome here. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, you should have fun!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and read /ic/s supplementary sticky HERE:

I'm tired as fuck right now and i feel incompetent about drawing muscular legs but I would recommend you strongly defining pelvis and regoing external Oblique.
Here are some of my refs http://imgur.com/a/63S1R

Lower half of oblique goes like large chunks and the upper may get serrated where it connects to the ribs.

Also rectus abdominis isnt perfectly straight it gets narrow where it connects to the ribcage and pelvis while being the widest near the navel.

boring symmetrical composition; poor, lumpy anatomy; unappealing rendering and after all this time drawing the same shit over and over you can't even get a cartoon nose correct? Good job hiding all the hands and feet too.
>>
>>3067761
Do you have any better examples of compositions I can follow for a pic like this? I can try to smooth out the anatomy a bit more, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'lumpy'.

I'll try to push the values and light source if that makes the rendering any more appealing because I'm also not sure on that aspect...

Dont mirror everything for starters. The loops on the ribbon, the three items jutting out of the water on each side, even the rocks/shells in the foreground have symmetry. The right forearm has an odd lump, the line from the lump to the hair bends the wrong way and that arm has piss poor bicep insertions. The thigh musculature is doughy and indistinct.
>>
>>3067799
Thanks for taking the time to go into detail. I'm a bit unclear about the odd lump on the right forearm and bicep insertions though, would you mind doing a redline?

The most I can do for the thighs is to look for more reference...

The hands are really flat, yeah. It was an experiment and while I like the design overall the quality didn't turn out great.

And unfortunately, looking fun isn't the same as being fun to draw. I feel like I don't have much confidence and I substitute it with being really meticulous and slow. The results are usually good for what i want to accomplish but the process involved is slow and frustrating because it doesn't have any room for 'happy accidents' or shortcuts

I'm not sure if I should just get really good at being meticulous or find a better way of doing things. Focus more on appealing shapes instead of slowly constructing everything, etc

My english isn't good enough to give you detailed advice...

But basicly try to use basic shapes and a perspective grid.
Don't draw details until you have the pose right.
And you image looks like you drew the body after you finished the head... don't do that.

I found your DA. I looked through it.
You're better than 90% of the artists here.
>I need your help with Confident clean lines, coloring, body proportions, hands, and poses...
Are you just listing the things that you're already good at?
You definitely have room to improve, but at this point for you that just means lots of practice, and maybe go get some resources from the artbook thread.
You might find some decent feedback here once in a while... Try to ignore the bitter crabs who pretend to be professional art critics. Whoever referred you here was probably trolling you.

Don't misconstrue that - that's a statement about how terrible most people here are, not how great you are... All I'm saying is there aren't many people here who can give you quality feedback.
>Just things i need help at. What you might not know is that most of these drawings take waaaaaay too long for me to finish (Days). Not gud.
Well, now I know...
Speeding up is a desirable goal for everyone. Takes time and exercise. I don't know how to help you there, because I'm still slow as fuck... Hours slow, not days slow though, unless it's a super complicated work. And I don't into color much yet.

Okay cause you asked for it. His pants/crotch are at a completely different angle from his torso. You didn't go through iterations of this design before you dove into painting. You didn't thumbnail. You didn't gather good enough reference. Where is he gonna put that gun? Just in his pants? Where does he keep ammo? There isn't even underwear. Is that a fucking bazooka? Why is it just resting on his shoulder? The strap looks like it should be for the bazooka but it also looks they aren't even attached to one another. Also the strap looks like a twisted up bed-sheet.
Man basically it seems like your thought process was "It'll be a dark elf with huge ears long hair and I guess guns." With no other thought to the storytelling of the piece/composition/anything.

That said this part is probably the best part of the image

how do you pick a style if you're super indecisive
>>
>>3068964
just do realism and style later
>>
>>3068650

This is really good! The way you flow the pose together from the top to the bottom is well done, and the lighting really sets the mood, even in grayscale.

The only thing that looks off is the chest, maybe fix the angle of the bra more towards the right and it will look 100x better.

>>3068926

The style is there but it feels really stiff. The angle of the waist is lower than the angle reflecting it above, which makes it look odd. Try making it flow a bit better!

>>3068949

The style is really neat! Work more on lighting though, the shadows are all over the place and really saturated.
>>
>>3067937
Looks nice, but those hips are too weird. Make them slightly more anatomically correct.

>>3068984
>The style is really neat! Work more on lighting though, the shadows are all over the place and really saturated.
thanks! yeah I did a tiny tiny little sketch of what i wanted to do for the painting, without any shading on it. I could've alleviated the lighting issues if I'd just workout out the lighting in that sketch. Was lazy though. Sometimes I think it's better to just do arbitrary lighting than try to figure it out on the fly.

Thanks for the feedback. Honestly, that whole drawing is crap, the head is too big, the lines are messy and the gesture sucks. I generally have better gesture but I'm experimenting with a new brush in a different program so it's gonna be a while before I get used to it. Not to mention that the brush itself doesn't have any pressure sensitivity.

>>
>>3069051
I admire your dedication noseyposeywosey
>>
>>3069085
No that isn't interesting. People will always come up to things that stand out from the crowd whether it is for good reasons- or for bad reasons. You probably look really odd and act like a weirdo in public unconsciously and that's why people just approach you sometimes. It's kinda like how people can't help but inspect an accident scene or trainwreck. It's ugly, but it's something that isn't an everyday occurrence so people check it out. Usually, people who are handsome don't need to say that they're handsome and most of the time are very self-conscious of their image, often downplaying it a lot. What you're doing is what most nerdy middle schoolers do when they don't have friends and have a lot of free time, not story telling.

I don't know about hype, I found them at an art store while I was traveling and I immediately decided I love the fuck out of them.
I have a few of the Kuretake Bimoji pens... They spend lots of time traveling with me and they don't dry out or make a mess in my bag.
They dry fast and don't smudge or run, which is good because my sketchbook get some rough treatment on the road.
They require extreme patience at first, but developing speed and precision comes naturally, because they force you to concentrate hard as fuck.

you need to loosen up anon... it's like your wrist can't help but draw the same anime face over and over again.

Try this: Draw someone "ugly". Draw someone with the goal of making them abnormal and un-aesthetic. That will help you to open up your likenesses a little bit.

da Vinci and Michelangelo used that technique to break up the monotony of drawing ideal faces all the time, and it helped them to loosen up their ideas of what a face should look like.

I'd say this crit applies to a wide group of Alt/Style artists... not gonna (You) all of them.

Thanks for reminding me of that. It was on my list of things that I need to practice. Whenever I've done that in the past, I always ended up with unappealing shapes and resorted back to my default faces. Something I've been trying to figure out is how to push the proportions and shapes and still maintain a cohesive style.

The New Testament wasn't to reflect God better, it was to change the Jewish religion to its own new religion while still utilizing the Jewish beliefs - similar or Islam's Quran. After all, it's easier to convert people when at least half of their beliefs exist in your religion already.

>>3070790
Not everyone was a barbarian. Just as today, some people are dicks and some aren't. Religion served as a unification tool and a set of basic laws to make travel and trade in different Christian communities more practical as they would, for the most part, have similar laws.

In general, it's more a tool of unification than anything.

There's nothing wrong with your painting, it's just a portrait so there's not much to fuck up. Seeing from your deviantart though, you need to pratice anatomy. It's really off on most of your illustrations. But I can say that you've really gotten better since 2016.

i didn't even know anatomy was a thing in 2016, i drew those trying to do it all just with my vauge knowlege of muscles. the problem was i was actually very good at copying from reference but i suffered the proko curse when drawing people from imagination. had i not been such a retard and just drew from reference and 3d models more I would've been much farther now. ironically because i fell into the construction meme too much, i thought i could rely on it and not need to use references to learn. as soon as i gave up loomis and found my own way of freehand drawing, i've started seeing massive improvements
also i like how you say that just because it's a portrait there's not much to fuck up, even though that's not true. there's a reason why in comics they say cool hands and faces are what get you job- they're the hardest things to make look good because they require you to be very accurate

i was being a Nosebro and thought relying on references was cheating when in fact that was what i should've been doing to improve my memory skills all along. use what works for you kiddos, don't fall into the overconstruction meme and just draw things you see as much as possible to draw things that you can't see(like dragons and cute asian women)
>>

>I'd say do more skull studies,
Thanks for the critique. I do studies. I've only been drawing since New Years' All my art is 2017, and I'm a hobbyist.
That said, you're critiquing a 30 minute sketch. You lied about even doing yours. Nosebro gave you 30 minutes to do something, and you posted a picture you did in MAY.
>>
>>3071167
I've been able to do it for a week now. Honestly, the biggest problem is choosing how to stucture your sleep cycle to prevent burnout and sleepy days. That and resisting the urge to waste time on /ic/ and watch youtube. I've found that waking up somewhat early in the morning actually helps you get up easier in the long run as apposed to passing out till 12 PM. Currently the schedule is sleep around 12AM-1AM and wake up at 6:30-7 PM. I tried doing 4:20 AM for the meme but I always sleep past it.
As for >>3071176 I did that to troll Nosebro, I know that faggot won't try and make an actually decent drawing anyways... he reminds me of my old self, I thought I knew everything when I learned about construction but I really was just relying on it to avoid having to practice and grind more. On a side note, I did remember that I painted that thing in Sai in only about 40 minutes though, so I wasn't too far off. The line drawings I did do on the spot though, and I banged all of them out in like 10-15 minutes(Sai just rapes both Clip Studio and Photoshop in terms of speed IMO).
>>
>>3071176
Hey man, if you started at 2017 then you're actually not doing as bad as I thought. I'd say just going to the book thread and studying the sketches of anime animators like Yoshinari would be a good boost to your abilities in addition to the skull thing I said earlier. Good luck, don't get worried about imagination drawing yet, just study hard and you'll improve

The challenge of working with only lineart and no rendering is that the real anatomy under the skin is invisible, and there's no good edges to put lines along in some places. Like an upward 3/4 shot of the face...
The real silhouette doesn't translate to lines well, the real anatomy is buried under skin. How, then, do you stylize and keep the picture both aesthetic and believable?
Look at this photo.
How would you do aesthetic line-only lineart at this angle without breaking rules?
That's what I'm working on. You can play with the location of the lines and the line weight, but rules only stretch so far. That is the heart of excellent stylization... This is the stylization thread.
Now, stylization is no excuse for incompetence, and it definitely doesn't replace the understanding of anatomy... But just saying "skull studies Loomis etc" betrays a misunderstanding.

>don't get worried about imagination drawing yet, just study hard.
I've found it effective to do an imagination drawing with elements I find challenging, look for what's wrong, and then I know what I need to study for the day... Keeps me from getting stuck, and it keeps me interested, engaged, and happy as a continuous reminder of my goals. :)
I'd soon be lost with straight studying and nothing else.

Don't listen to the two other faggots. They seem to be doing some indirect bitching directed at somebody else. They seem a bit clueless when it comes to giving good critique.

First thing that comes to mind when I saw your image was the disproportion between the feet size and then the hands. 2nd: Clean up the edges of your linework and focus on the silhouettes. 3rd: Think of a lighting direction when you add shade. It defines shape and her lower legs where they cross is a good example of where you got that wrong.

I want to be that girl. *drip*
So, now that's out of the way, some things to think about...
The woman's pose is stiff and her gaze is unfocused. What's she supposed to be looking at? Her right arm is floaty - I dont get any sense of weight or contact there.
There's some weirdness with bits of the perspective and alignment, but it would be useless for me to describe without drawing anything.
One piece of composition advice - thise panties should probably be around her knees rather than placed carefully and flatly on the desk... It's a violent event. I'd also put some weight into the lady's right arm. Turn her forearm and force it into the girl's back. Bend her wrist and giver her a fistful of that long black hair, wrench the girl's head back, slouch her back relative to her shoulders, give us the impression of pain, violence, anguish, fury... Turn the left hand 180 degrees and bend the wrist. That alone would loosen up the gesture a lot.
