I'm using Line of Action website to practice figure/gesture drawing (not sure if they are even the same, although they sound like they are).
I'm doing it the way Vilppu said, however doing a 30 minute class where I have to copy a pose in 15 seconds seems like a waste of time if I'm not actually doing anything.
So is this correct or not?

Can anyone please recommend some good digital coloring tutorials?
Or maybe a better question would be: do I need to understand coloring IRL to proceed to digital? do I start with grayscale tones? and if so, how do I even get started on that?
>>
>>3023337
Your question is a mess. Any practice is better than no practice, personally I find figure drawing to help my observation skills a lot, though I tend to do too much contour which I'm working to fix right now.

You seem to chicken scratch too much. Even Vilppu when he does a billion lines he's not chicken scratching.

How do you draw/depict abs with lines before shading for drawing

Or is it best to just rely on shading and light to draw abs
>>
>>3023349
>abs on women
>disgusting
>saves to ref folder anyway.
>>
>>3023349
oh to answer the quesetion, i would do an outline sort of to know the area then go over it with light and shade.
>>
>>3023349
Do the same as when you draw noses, dinosaurs, dicks, or anything else. Apply whichever process works for you best, there aren't special techniques for each unique object in the universe.

I'd very lightly line out the shapes so shading is easier. No point in limiting yourself to drawing with shades only, as long as your initial lines are erased later on, they can only help.
>>
>>3023349
Shading, its the only way. Line arted abs almost never look good from any angle shot. Only major muscle groups can do without adding depth

With faces, no matter how much they're in shadow, always check your relation to each feature. Look at where your ear is compared to the photo. Even the tiniest bit off and it can change the whole structure because we see draw comparative to other landmarks on the face.

It's coming along, though.

what is the background?? whys the ear blue???? is the lighting blue?? I HAVE NO IDEA
get rid of those colour and paint in black and white for now, until ur values are down. it's clear to me ur focusing WAY too much on what colours should go where and how they should blend rather than thinking about actual form

ull get there bud, just keep practicing
get rid of that ref though and get one with clear forms defined, they usually have really harsh lighting coming from only one direction

Dunno why he's being a little shit but no one is gonna draw a perfect human figure after 5 weeks. People that have been drawing for years still fuck up, even pros like Murata admittedly fuck up proportions every now and then, never mind that retard, you're doing well.

Work on:
Your observation skills. If you're drawing from reference I'd bet anything his ass doesn't really look that weird, his torso isn't that long, his left shoulder is too far out.
Your hands and feet, don't ignore them.

Your female drawing looks better IMO, but her neck looks too wide, and her arm that is holding the mantle looks robotic and awkward, work on the elbow. Her belly button also doesn't seem to be centered, maybe the shapes around it give that impression.

Failed to capture his likeness, but I'm still happy that it looks like a passable human. Some self critique:
- the angle on the forehead is off (makes it look swollen)
- the tip of the nose is a bit too big and droopy
- the jawbone is way off and throws the whole face off
- the right iris and pupil is too big
- placement-wise, most features seem to be where they are supposed to, though
- trying to draw hair with a pen + graphite pencil with no knowledge of rendering textures is a massive waste of time

In pic related I need to place the second red VP, but because I don't know the exact location of the blue VPs, I cant place it accurately. I know one solution is to actually see the vps, but sometimes they're too far away to accurately judge.

Yes, if you try to do it with line art you're going to make your character look like an old man

For resources i would check out the drawing book thread or going to your local library and checking out some of the modern "drawing and painting" books. Anything you learn about painting can be applied to pen and pencil drawings when shading honestly.

Is this any good as far as gesture drawing practice goes?
I know that practice > no practice, but I want to be sure that I'm not wasting my time doing exercises wrong.
>>
>>3024174
It looks like good practice to me
Draw one good line, instead of making a thick bad one out of multiple
>>
>>3024131
Do line quality exercises from drawabox/Scott Robertson/Peter Han, your drawing radiates with trying too hard to have clean lines, when it should come out of you more naturally.

To address your concerns
>What would be of most benefit to practice?
Whatever you're not very good at.
If your figures are stiff, do more gestures. Research them, watch Karl Gnass or Vilppu on yt or read Hampton's book (whose explanation of gesture is top notch), same for construction, anatomy etc.
>What's the ratio
Partially answered above.
Do quick poses to warm up your muscles, then analyze some more complicated pose or an individual body part. Then put it all together and make something finished.

The most important thing, more important than ratio or a specific practice, is being deliberate.

If its square VP2(1) and VP2(2) are the same distance away from from each other as VP1(1) and VP1(2).
>>
>>3024109
This makes no sense, even on figure drawing people don't tell you to copy exactly your reference, they tell you to exagerate the pose and things like that, isn't that critique? Like "you didn't accentuate the pose" or even something like "this looks good, it seems you're getting the hang of figure drawing".

Drawing isn't just copying, if you see some masters drawing sometimes it doesn't even look all that much like the ref, but on the drawings you can really feel the flow and movement of the pose.

Also a lot of other critiques can be made, this is a /beg/ thread ffs, people should be judged on /beg/ matters.

Is his proportion right? His shading? Does it look like light is coming from his ass?

Okay, so I'm still beg too but from what I can tell, you are not yet showing the depth and form of the head.

The head is a box like volume. In this case, there's the front and side plane. Your drawing looks a little flat in comparison and didn't incorporate the volume.

So here the light is hitting the corner of those planes so that should be the lightest area. Then there is a gradation of value as the planes of the head turn away from the light.

Assuming your boxes have right angles, you need to draw those 90 degrees out of perspective and project them back in.

First find the horizon line, then use those two points to find the stationary point - SP is out of perspective, so from there you can rotate and project any angle.
Scott Robertson explains all this stuff.

Yes, this is exactly what ive been working with. But when you move the horizon line severly up, doing that breakdown you did becomes a challenge (pic related). How would I find the vanishing points of this here red box?

The vanishing points are so far away the lines are almost parallel. Id have to zoom super far out to even attempt to find the horizon

>>

Eh, I don't feel like drawing another one with my mouse.

The principle is the same, you can either zoom out really far or help yourself with some gimmicks. Those include
>3D
>draw the first version, use transform tool to tilt it
>don't draw the converging lines and just visualize the VP's location
>software perspective guides (Lazy Nezumi, Krita)
>freehand it
The last two are especially recommended. If you practice the easier distortion, you'll get a sense of space that will get you through most stuff through estimation.
>>
>>3024271
Damn, that's what I expected. I was really hoping there was some way to get it accurate without using those approaches. Well, thanks anyways. I appreciate you taking the time to reply!
>>
>>3024276
Maybe there is, I'm just sayin what I know.

If you have a grid, you could also draw an ellipse onto that grid and rotate the box within that, I've seen Krenz, Vandruff and even Scott do that, though I don't like doing that one.
Really, just read Scott's How to draw, it's an excelent book and the chapter about setup and grids answers all this stuff.
>>
>>3024282
I've actually read all that stuff from those books and am currently studying krenz's methods. I find the ellipse method to take a really long time. Watching krenz's videos and seeing him freehand a perspectively accurate scene without guidelines, makes me think there is something im missing.

I've spent that last two days trying to reinvent perspective to see if there's a way to accurately map objects without leaving the picture frame, and as of now i've determined these artists are just really good guessers :/
>>
>>3024198

It's good. Why Cringe? You seem to know your stuff.
>>
>>3024290
Ah and when I say krenz isnt using guidelines, i meant guidelines that run all the way to the VP. A lot of his scenes are self contained in a cube floating in space.

Im also a lonely 24yr old virgin with no job, friends and no girl will ever like me.

My lack of connection with people is what brought me to drawing, all I wanna do is draw her, im always alone and my brain has become perfectly fine with the thought of settling with 2D for the rest of my life.

Not gonna post my waifu as I would prefer to keep her to myself (Yes im possesive and very protective of her, I dont want someone to drop a rule34 on her)

It's a start and it's free. Just go through it once if you want. Or if you don't trust the founder of that site you can follow Peter Han book. Most of what Drawabox teaches is from Peter Han.

There's a PDF of it somewhere in /IC/. Do understand that the exercise for basic shapes is just suppose to be an exercise. You don't have to be to draw perfect circle or boxes to move on to the next lesson.

You just need to understand what the exercise is for. Drawing circle, lines, ovals is for motor control. Drawing boxes allows you to see object in 3D and understand basic perspective.

Most people have a hard time to understand it unless they do it again and again. That's why they have 200 - 500 boxes challenge.

People are attracted towards passionate people. If you are good enough at drawing people will notice, you will gain attention, you will climb up in the social chain. When you are appreciated and noticed by society, women want your dick.

No one likes someone who has no interest and no hobbies and doesn't really love anything just lives life without passion or direction. People who have drive and goals and dreams and imagination are interesting.

There are plenty of weeaboos who sleep with other hot weeaboo cosplayer chicks. Usually they have a big passion for they hobby and are not ashamed of it.. and drawing is 100 times more respectable than being a weeb, and artist girls are usually a lot hotter than weeb girls.. so yeah, it's gonna help you get laid.

the jaw recedes, it doesnt jut out. the eyes dont curve down they are straight across. the nose doesnt curve so much, its straight ish. the chin is not pointy sycra its more oval shaped and the forehead is not that short and box shaped. you need to take time to look at what youre drawing. i know, i have a really bad time trying to get proportions right. keep practicing.

before i start grinding from reference, is this construction form good enough or is there a better one? no-one answered when i asked for books earlier so i had to make it myself
>>
What is the secret to drawing fast?
Whenever I try short gestures my proportions are extremely off.
>>
>>3024583
Start by sketching the general masses forming the head and don't run into detail except when the proportions and positions are just right. You won't have to do this when you learn how the human figure works, but you have to do it right now because you don't seem to have a very good idea.
It looks like you're drawing lines and symbols at random points in your screen. That face looks like a juxtaposition of the ideas you have of what a nose, eye, lips and wrinkles are without any intention of constructing a head.
It doesn't seem like you are actually trying to express a head, it looks like you are forcing your ideas into your drawing; and that's why you are not getting anything right. Try to actually visualize what you want to draw before drawing it. Every line counts.

Anyone else tried drawing gestures from a music video?
It makes sense, 'cause you're listening to the same music that influences the movement you're looking at, and you have no more than a couple seconds, as they are constantly moving.

If it's just a straight up copy from a reference image does it still stay good?
>>
Anons what the fuck is wrong with me? Why can't I into imagination and draw cool creative shit like everyone else? Everyone's drawing vehicles, wizards, hentai and all sorts of cool shit meanwhile I can't do anything other than copy from references. Should I just off myself now?
>>
>>3024871
You gotta be more patient. Maybe check back in a couple hours, or tomorrow.
Though I don't see anything special about those, it looks like a merge of Hampton's and Krenz's approach.

With hands for cartoons, you can do sorta what I do. Draw a square, then circles for the knuckles, and connect the tangents of the circles with curved lines. I'm at work, with only a mouse and MS paint, so this is the best I can do with limited time and resources to demonstrate. Sorry.

even if you improve technically your aesthetic taste will still be shit
>>

requester wanted it on this style

Sorry for the late reply, but i really don't know. I'm still a beginner and nothing looks wrong to my eyes. If someone could point somewhere i could improve that'd be great.
>>
>>3024916
Aesthetic taste improves are you improve technically and acquire a more diverse and accurate visual library.

Aight, I think I'm done. How can I avoid slanted faces in future? Should I just use a straight edge to make parallel lines to place the features
>>
>>3024908
draw real bodies first. copy from references. pay attention to and put more time into your lines. don't use airbrush all the time. never use a lasso tool or something to fill up colors, or at least don't make it so obvious. (I'm talking about the blue cloth thing where you can clearly see each pixel on the edges)
What is the blue thing on her hand? Draw things like they really look (=use references).

First attempt at painting a still life study. How do I improve my brushwork? I'm trying to follow ctrlpaint's advice regarding blending and things like that, but i can't seem to grasp the basics of brushwork.
>>
>>3024616
Looks pretty good to me, nice study. Maybe not use as much black and play more with dark greys?
>>
>>3024760
You messed up her eyes a little bit and it kinda killed the angle and failed to capture her likeness, but it's looking good. Her right eye would be smaller and a bit farther out, notice how her eyelashes don't point "upwards" cause it's not a frontal view, they spread outside her face.

Also the light shadow you added on her cheek is kinda killing the roundness in her face. She looks too skinny.

Nice lines and curves but why'd you stab her beautiful, small and gentle bellybutton?
>>
>>3025002

i was trying to define the center of her abdomen at the same time as drawing her belly button and i guess i went a little overboard
>>
>>3025000

Something about the way you did her right hip looks a little off, it looks like she's got a bump for her belly.

Besides that it's quite good, well done.
>>
trying Tarkovsky's frame into oil painting.
>>
>>3025007
Black for the bellybutton, grey for defining. You've been using grey for all the other shadows, that one really sticks out.

I really like her face. There's something off about her titties, I can't really tell what. I think you can make them a tiny bit bigger and the right tit should kinda curve towards her shoulder to appear round, not go towards the center. They are not male pecs, they are tits, they don't meet in the center.

Her hair should also be "bigger". Maybe add some of those little line-shadows you do on the arm/hand holding the weight down? Try to make it feel heavy. That also made me notice her right shoulder, it seems relaxed in your drawing, it seems tense in the reference.

Also that part of her side-belly or whatever that goes out a little bit, notice in the ref how the point where it furthest goes out is exactly where the bellybutton is, while in your drawing it is below it.

Anyway, I really dig your style, you made her look really sexy, although the overly simplified shadows prevent you from giving highlights and stuff.
>>
>>3025020
Meant her left shoulder, our right.

I think the issue with the arm might be that it's a little too thin and a little too curvy, and also that it should look like it's pressed closer to her rib cage. I'm thinking it might help to draw a line where the weight is pulling down during the gesture stage and work around that.

Thanks for all of the input, back to the grind.

it has to actually look like it connected to the head

Is using a grid to draw from photos a beginner's only technique or is that just how it's done?

stop drawing things that arent there
you dislocated the shoulder
destroyed her right elbow and forearm

I circled what doesnt exist in the reference
when you draw with a reference you need to stop drawing with your brain and draw with your eyes

but you dont full understand how its suppose to bend.
also lower file size

How do I think in forms?
>>
>>3023815
Grind on the first two or three lessons. The real value of draw a box won't become clear for a long ass time because if you lack the ability to apply these skills to reference images it'll all be for nothing.

I say do the practices for a few months while focusing more on something like Loomis (if you want to work on construction) or Keys to Drawing (if you want to work on sight drawing).
>>
>>3025101
Forms are literally legos, anon. And if you haven't played with legos then I'm sorry for you.
>>
>>3024348
Keep pictures of your waifu above you when you work. Study hard in the hopes of one day realizing her true form. Do It For Her, anon.
>>
>>3025066
the problem isnt drawing it exactly like the reference
the problem is they made it different from the reference,

they didnt capture the image and just made it something else.
thats fine if he just needed to copy the pose and drew an anime face but they didnt even draw the pose correctly.
>>
>>3024871
Sorry for the late response. Posted then went to bed.
Other anon was right. I spent a lot of time studying Hampton and Krenz.

I'd say learn perspective first then learn proportions and the basic shapes of the body. This way you can place them however you want. Correct anatomy can come later but you should definitely learn it as you go. It really depends on what you want to draw.
>>
>>3024803
you just read his reply didnt you?
>>
>>3023324
Here's a question. The last time I posted in this thread with a very poorly done reference image I was told to move towards Keys to Drawing. I finally got around to downloading it (employment's a bitch, I'm planning on waking up earlier later on so that I have more time in the day to draw), is it worth it to plug in like a month or so grinding through it? I'm still doing the Draw a Box Lesson 1/2 exercises because my lines are still shit-tier, but I feel like I can't progress to Lesson 3 because I cannot properly into references.
>>
>>3025121
Definitely spend time grinding out keys to drawing. That should have been done first.
Its also really easy and you'll see quick results so it'll feel nice.
>>
>>3024644
Keep going. The more you draw the more feature placement will become familiar to you and you can see where you're strong and where you're not.
>>
>>3024708
It might not seem like it, but this time you did much better anon. You are a quick learner.
