If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You need to read the sticky. And heres something to get you started. You need looms. For looms you need to get rid of symbol drawing. You need right dide of the brain to get rid of symbol drawing. After that you can start with looms fun with pencil. After you csn make domthing from imagination that looks good and is expressive continue along with other looms. read the sticky now and you should get some basic idea. Also if you are a beginner draw on paper with pencil for the time being. You dont wanna be the guy who draws shitty lifeless celeb porno cause you lack the fundamentels. Drawing on a paper is important for s bigginer.

Stop using black then. Black rarely occurs in nature, shadows and dark objects are generally tints of black, with other colors in them, or very dark values of a color.

You need to study value. You should start looking at things in terms of greyscale ramps - this point of the object is the brightest, this area is the midtone, this point is the shadow. Beginning painting classes have students paint sinple objects, like an egg, on a white background, to see the values more clearly, and in a simplified context. Then, you move on to simple still life.

My beginning oil class was awesome for this - I'd already been painting in oils years before this, but the assignments showed me a lot more. One of the most valuable was painting a crumpled up brown paper bag, 4 times. We had to divide up the canvas into 4 areas, and in teh first area, paint it b&w. Then paint it only using two complimentary colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel.) Then we had to use two colors across from each other, like red and blue. Then we had to try it actual color.

Mentally converting red and blue into values that work as a greyscale ramp to sculpt the figure in the scene breaks a lot of people when they try it, but once you get it, it changes everything. That's when you can start seeing color not just as a hue - but as a value, where it falls on the greyscale ramp, if you took a B&W photo of it, or made a Xerox of the painting.

Get some beginning oil painting books. There are some really good ones, one of my favorites is Oil Painting Secrets From a Master by Linda Cateura and David Leffel.

I feel that I understand value well in a kind of planar context. When the planes aren't strictly defined, I fall apart completely. So in other words I'm having a real hard time rendering transitions from value to value. I'm just going by eye on this, not with any kind of theory because I don't know any.

I understand some more advanced light and color theory and use it in my line-based work, but in painting it's a bit over my head.

What do you suggest? Paint from pictures of simple objects, then once the values read correctly, move on to still life of simple objects?

I'm reading and watching a bit of material on painting because I'm basically a complete beginner, but I think it's more of a method or technique issue than a knowledge issue. I'm still thinking about it like a draftsman and I approach it so.

>What do you suggest? Paint from pictures of simple objects, then once the values read correctly, move on to still life of simple objects?

Yes, exactly this. It's a skill, that you gain from experience. Some people have a natural feel for it, others struggle. The more you do it, the more comfortable you get with it, and can make decisions from instinct.

Painting is a totally different headspace. You need to get comfortable there, and learn there. This is where art school can come in handy - if you have good teachers, they can walk you through the process.

Value is very important, that's why we study it. Painting realistically requires a lot of things, but the two most important are draftmanship, and very solid control over values.

This is why we have to spend hours with paint or a monitor, and try different combos and techniques, to see what works and what doesnt, and studying things like how light, atmosphere, and distance can effect value. A shadow up close won't be the same value as a shadow far away, on the horizon. A shadow won't have the same value late in the day, as opposed to noon time, when the sun is closest, and directly overhead. Etc, etc.

Digital makes it easier - for example, you can paint in Photoshop, and simply have a B&W conversion layer over the painting - and by turning it on and off, you can look at the values as you paint.

Same anon as the begpaint ball and leg guy.

I made this just now. I can see the values and form is off, but it's something.

I was getting more than a bit confused with the form, so it fucked my values as well I believe.

Maybe I should do an underdrawing next time, so I can get the form down and just focus on the values. I just put some paint down to get the form.

I don't have the best eye for value yet, but I did notice that my value range that I originally assumed was always too narrow. However I exaggerate some extremes too much as it is right now. If you look at the picture from afar, my painting's lights read higher in value than the picture.

Is the reference too complex? I feel that my "eye" was off majorly on this one, so maybe I'm punching above my weight a bit.

Maybe a little bit, but that's not a bad attempt. This is where the grind comes in - keep doing studies until it starts feeling more natural to you. Then jump into color, and try to mimic those values with one color. Do a monochromatic painting, only using red. Then blue. Then do two colors. This is what an art class would have you do. You're training your eye to see it, and you hand to recreate it.

Alright. I'll do a few more renditions of this until the values aren't off too much. I think the form will come by itself, because my eye is fine. Medium is just a bit awkward. I'm not comfortable with digital yet, either. But those are minor issues.

I think it's worth mentioning but I'm obviously not using a color picker, and CTRL Z very conservatively. Maybe I will do an exercise where I look at reference, lay down the value I think I see, then color pick and compare.

Thanks, I didn't know you can get solid advice on /ic/ lmao.

Good start, but both the dude's pelvis and some of your legs are wrong. The most glaring one is the dude's right leg (which would be our left, so it'd be the left leg for us). If you get up and roll up your pants to your thigh, watch how your knees and your thighs move when your foot rotates. The knee cap will almost always be in line with the foot in a natural pose and as result, the shins and muscles that attach to the knee move slightly as well. Try studying Bridgman. Also if limbs still give you trouble, try doing studies of the Flash for legs or Spiderman arms and hands. Keep on making comic book characters man, maybe you'll get to the big leagues eventually.
>>
>>2998934
It looks like you just took your time instead of spending a minute like the first one.
>>
>>2999426
Also keep in mind I tried to preserve as much as the original drawing when redlining it so there might still be some inaccuracies. Use this as a guide and learn from Bridgman and try to draw all muscles as blocky shapes instead of just bumpy lines. Hell, you should draw eveything in boxes and divide the boxes into halves and thirds to learn the proportions. That way if you have to turn it in perspective, you can simply draw the divided box in a different perspective and still have 100 percent correct proportions. If you get good at freeballing boxes it will become less tedious and it will become kinda fun to turn things in space.
Here's some examples of box application

TL:DR Just divide the torso(which means top of ribcage to bottom of pelvis) into quarters with 2 of the 4 quarters being ribcage and 1 of the 4 quarters being the pelvis. The bottom of the pectoral muscle is roughly at the half way mark. If you want to be more exact, you can divide the quarter sized boxes you created and divide those into thirds. Let's call those 4 quarter sized boxes "quarts" Then you can make the pelvis 1/3rd the size of a "quart" higher up and the bottom of the pectoral muscle 1/3rd of a "quart" lower if you want to be 100 percent accurate. Usually using the quarter divisions is good enough though, espescially if you practice breaking down reference image torsos like this enough times.

Bridgman's complete guide to drawing from life, Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy. Also, you could look up Krenz tutorials on CGPeers. hard and soft edges, learn about them nigga
>>
>>3000138
Drop the fucking airbrush tool. Airbrush is for starting and finishing, not carrying the whole fucking piece.
Anyway, I recommend hard/round brush or a texture brush for shading. Start grey and work values lighter/darker. Don't know what program you're using but, in Photoshop, hold alt, click, then select your value and use that to blend. Just keep doing this between values and keep going until you blend shit enough. If it's some other program, find some other shortkey for your eyedropper tool.
Look at an actual photo. Put it to greyscale to see where the hard and soft edges are.

Btw, don't use white backgrounds. Use mid tone backgrounds. (Middling greys)
Only use white and black for finishing touches.
>>
>>2998783

Here's some things I learned:
>look at eyes and draw them (typical I know but it's good to understand the shape of the whole eye)
>eyes are just spheres. Eyelids are just fabric wrapping around that sphere. Think of a bowling ball wrapped by two scarves
>understand the placement of where the eyes go. look at skulls. villipu has a pretty good vid on the head in general and shows where the eye socket is located.
>eyes don't just stare straight ahead when looking at something relatively close. depending on what the person is focusing on, they tend to be slightly crossed because their eyes are essentially making a triangle/rectangle shape with the object.
>the lens of the eye is concave like the inside of a spoon therefore the shiny part (that white circle that you see in cartoons) will usually be in the darker section of the eye.

That's kinda all I have

I think that's what went wrong here. Anon probably fell for the fitting everything on the paper meme and tried to shrink the torso to fit more of the picture on page subconsciously. Also, it seems like the dude is dodging the punch but isn't leaning away to dodge correctly or the dude is is reacting like he got punched but the arm and fist doesn't actually connect to his face

I have a bit of a silly question, but I need some advice.

I seem to be fine doing studies but lately I've had a lot of trouble committing to a drawing and finishing it. I don't know, I feel I'm struggling being creative and imaginative.

How do you usually push through in order to make finished things? How do you brainstorm and find ideas you like and commit to?

You don't get to be creative and imaginative while studying. Take a little break if you feel worn out. A few days, maybe a week. I think it's just as important as studying. I noticed that for some reason I'm becoming better after that. I belive I'm not the only one.

Haha, I think everyone goes through that. Myself included. I guess even in art confidence to keep pushing through still applies

Hey thanks a lot. Kienan's videos are really helpful especially the clipping part. And yeah, I'm adding the gold trims and a few other designs.

Right now, I'm just cleaning up the flat colors without the linework. Then I'll add more design to the outfit and start painting over to define some areas better.

Any more critiques are appreciated.

Your values are always too harsh, especially on the skin, which is supposed to look soft. Your's looks like disgusting plastic
For you, I'd try not using straight black or straight white when doing value studies just to get used to using subtle but still readable different gray values instead. Getting contrast by using black or white is easy but when using grays you really need to focus more on seeing values than you'd normally do.

Doing exercises off that Loomis book in the sticky plus a channel I found on YouTube.
Feel like I'm struggling to shade those circles and I can't draw other shapes though.
How long should I be spending on each stage or when will I know I can move on? I mean presumably I don't have to get to the same standard as the author before trying other stuff.

Learn some real anatomy and how to draw cubes/boxes and planes first. They're easier. I'm only saying this because you two don't know how to use perspective. Cubes are the easiest way to learn that. Spheres and round shapes are easy to place down arbitrarily but are very difficult to use accurately for complex angles in perspective. Loomis was a massive faggot making Fun With A Pencil. Only his other books are good. It's easy to tell when you do a box sloppy and straight lines are very easy to see the tilts of the body by simplifying them to angles. Ellipses and round shapes are more difficult to tell if you've done sloppily as will as being worse at showing angles. If you two autismos took the time to study people in real life, you'll see the body always is at different angles and almost never perfectly vertical or horizontal (people usually slightly tilt their head side to side or slightly forward, hips usually contrapose the shoulders, etc.) There seems to be this meme that if you use straight lines or blocky forms that automatically makes it stiff, and using curvy shapes automatically makes your figures not stiff. As long as you have different angles in every part and make the angles flow into each other it will work. Get a 3d simulator or just grab a real cube and draw 7" by 7" cubes with your shoulder, and not your wrist on large sheets of paper 100 times, while changing the angle of the cube slighly each time. If you don't have large paper, buy a cheap 12 inch sketchbook and fill it with cubes, and if you have clip studio, then you can use the 3d pose engine to practice rotating cubes as well. Once you can draw a cube intuitively, you can draw anything in perspective by relating it to cubes. Read Hampton or Bridgman, not Loomis. Get back to work.

The top and bottom of the cabinet behind the keyhole is tilted. Same for the painting because of the slightly curved lines you did. Just use a ruler man. If you freehand some shit, you'd better be able to draw straight lines with your shoulder because you'll have to freehand the rest of it to be consistent. If you have perfectly straight ruler lines in 75 percent of your drawing and then you just call it quits and have freehanded wobbly ones for the other 25 percent it's going to look off. Also what looks to be paneling on the back wall is unevenly spaced, which is strange because you did well on the floor. You could've just run the vertical lines starting from the bottom of the wall where each of those floor lines touched the wall straight up to the ceiling and repeated that and you would've had basically solved this problem. Everyone needs here needs to Marshall's perspective series immediately.
