How the fuck do I draw heads and shit when I cant even make a circle fuck.

I've been looking at Keys to Drawing, but I can't wrap my head on the chapter where he uses a pencil to measure instead of the eye, I have no idea how to get it to work...
>>
>>2982337
Are you using any kind of line smoothing? I find that if smoothing is turned up too high it makes it hard to draw through the same circle multiple times because the latency it introduces requires you to overshoot your first circle a little.
>>
>>2982369
You hold a pencil at arm's length, looking at the object you're drawing - or photo, if that's what you're using. You make a measurement, like the distance between the eyes, and something else, and compare. Then apply that to your drawing.

Example: looking at a house, you can measure the height of it, and compare it to the width, and then look at the proportions of your drawing.

the proportions are really off man. Her torso and legs should be longer and her head is tilted up not down. You need to measure more, and really look and what you're drawing. The gesture could use some work too, you didin't quite capture that lean she has. Keep at it man
>>
>>2982215
Can you draw circles on paper? if so, you just need some getting used to tablets (did you try drawing from your elbow / shoulder) and there's always a circle tool if you need a circle real fast and can't be bothered.

If you can't draw a circle on paper though, I'd suggest you do some exercises on arm control and precision. Having a steady hand and being able to draw exact lines can be crucial dependin on your style.
>>
>>2982433
It's cleaner and more detailed, and that's the only improvement.
Overall it bears no likeness to the original, only the pose is the same. If you can't see what's wrong, make each of these into a separate layers, lower the opacity of the top layer, and superimpose the images, then switch on and off to see what's wrong.
>>
>>2982378
Yeah, well, that's the fucking point. Because there are so many proportions and curves to take note of, it takes a lot of practice and dedication to learn how to draw a body (more so from imagination than reference). By using reference, you build up your mental library and learn what the important elements are.
>>
Guys, I have a question:
I just tried (and failed) to copy that Stravinsky drawing, though I wonder, how long is that exercise supposed to take?
Took me like 90 minutes, and that was with rushing at the end when I realized that I fucked up the proportions something fierce.

Never really drawn anything ever since high school (10+ years ago), so I'm unsure about everything

The point of the exercise is to learn to draw what is there rather than what you think you see. I think it doesn't matter how long you take, just carefully draw the lines as accurately as you can. With practice will come speed, no shame in taking long.

You don't have to copy the exact pose (unless that's what you're going for). As far as my understanding goes, in figure drawing the whole point is to take your time and take in the details, anatomy and proportions. So if in the end, you get a result that generally looks like the model, you're doing fine. i wouldn't necessarily say yours are terrible, but they do look rushed. your general form seems to be ok, but try to take note of the smaller details like the skin indentation as well.
>>
>>2982465

I'm gonna quote something another anon told me that I think may help you:

"What my art teacher told me, and what stuck to me, was that gesture is the opposite of contour. When gesture drawing, you're drawing internal movement of forms, rather than the outline of forms themselves: imagine you're sketching the vectors of the object's movement rather than its forms.
They should generally be really fast, and once you start working in surface detail, it's usually not considered a gesture anymore (but some people just seem to think a gesture is any quick figure drawing) but anyway, thinking of it like that really helped my figure drawing. Hope that helped"

More landmarks and better (more detail and contrast) references. Learning to think in 3D also helps.

For now I suggest studying faces (find high resolution portraits or use a mirror) and drawing your own. The manface you gave her is exactly what they call symbol drawing, and you need to break that habit. Know that many viewers could care less about poor anatomy if the face is attractive, and know that the opposite is also true.

Yeah, that seems like pretty standard advice on the topic. I think I'm breaking the body down into too many segments and drawing the gesture of each of those rather than the flow of the whole thing. Maybe I'll try lowering the time limit.

I can tell my balance and proportions are way off, too. Balance I'll hopefully correct by grinding, proportions I'm not really sure if they're vital to gestures but I'll be studying that eventually.

If you go to page 37 of Successful Drawing by Andrew Loomis, he talks about converting measurements of your choice back into perspective very accurately. I just realized I could simply get the Specification of anything, convert these measurements by multiplying or dividing into any suitable scale I want to always draw in the correct proportions.

I can't believe I was so dumb as to try to ''eye out'' squares in perspective for such technical things, lmao. If only I tried to pay attention to the goddam book everyone keeps memein' around. Although to be honest, Loomis is a bit daunting for a beginner. It is only after going through a bit of Scott Robertson that I can understand it a bit better, but maybe I am just a bit daft.
Gonna give this idea a try and see how it goes, if it doesn't work I'll just go to sleep and continue tomorrow.

That was a copy & paste of the message I meant to send 3 hours ago. I've been trying the method I talked about and yes it works, but the issue is that you need an extremely large piece of paper so you can have the vanishing points available yet, have a decent sized drawing without any distortion (I ended up drawing a mini-humvee, with the correct proportions).

It's a bummer really, I like this method a lot more than having to guess it out by breaking down common objects into squares. I'll go to sleep and check Loomis again tomorrow, there must be something else I am missing.

The top half of the face is looking up and the bottom half is looking straight horizontally. Do you see what I mean? The face is skewed in different directions. Nose is also a little low. The neck is drawn too far back.

You should work on your head construction. Follow a basic technique like Loomis or Michael Hampton. It will help you keep everything in alignment and in the right proportion.

- Porn.

- Movie scenes.

- Other artist work. Yes, you can use other artist work as ref. People do it all the time.

You also have to be able to draw first.
>>
>>2982874

Don't rely only on one or two source to learn from.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+draw+hand

Learn from anything you can get your hands on. Look for videos/torrent etc...

This is from my experience is the fastest way to learn. It's faster if you have a teacher to guide you 1 on 1 though... beggars cant be choosers.
Doesn't work if you're a lazy fuck.

i feel ya on that one. just practice more, but not mindless practice. take time to study the image. take measurements of where things are and try to get the angles right on a practice sheet of paper. thats usually my problem, i dont get the right angle for lines or something is not in the right spot. it even helps to trace certain things a couple of times and then draw it. kinda like a forcing your brain to get the angles right. i dont know if this helps, but it certainly helps me when im trying to draw from a picture or on a screen, hell it even helps when im trying to draw from real life (well, you cant trace real life, but you know what i mean).

Total noob here. I started with fun with a pencil and got stuck at the part where loomis demonstrates the divided ball and plane method. After a couple of hours of analyzing and confusion, I whipped up this 5-minute abomination. Gotta start somewhere I guess. I suppose his other book 'head and hands' would go more in-depth.

I already dropped all vices/distractions including vidya and porn so I could focus on studies so I'm not giving up just yet. It's going to take years of learning and practice to nail down everything accurately.

In general, if you split up the hand into the palm, finger groups, and then individual fingers, you can create some alright hands.

Looking at you hands and breaking it up into simple shapes can help understand structures of how different hand positions work.

Who told you that you had to draw perfect circles, especially with a tablet, when your art app has circle drawing tools? Artists use compasses to draw perfect circles, why is it you think you can't draw a circle with a circle tool?

You're obsessing over something that isn't that important. Move on to the rest of drawing.

You can use the blending brush, or what I do is work with very low opacity, 10-30%, and brush over transitions and build color up. I use the alt/option key to pick up color (it's the eyedropper tool) to get different parts of the gradation to blend with. I also use a medium hard brush (center solid, edges fade).

My process of drawing hands goes like this:
1) I draw a lame shape denoting hands.
2) When cleaning up the lineart, I visualize the hand gesture that I want to draw.
3) I make this gesture with my hand and observe it thoroughly while drawing the hand.
4) I add feminine features to it, and voila, it's done!

from copying lots of anime girls and watching people draw anime girls and trying to engage with the process you can learn how to draw anime babes; you just have to be super unoriginal at first. Been trying to get into sprite pr0n, this is the first one I did after about a day or two of work.

I used paint.NET and a method I call focusing, for lack of knowing if it's an actual term. I basically start with a 20x40 canvas and do a crude outline. Then I double the pixels over and over again until I get a nice level of detail.

I think the problem is I'm forgetting that it's supposed to be low-res, and increasing the size when I'm not finished up with what I already have yet.

Nice reaction image faggot.

No see, your mental retardation comes from the idea that your "exercises" or "drawing" is worth the critique. Notice how it says "fundamental exercises" that isn't a fundamental exercise.

You don't even have anything to critique. What are you trying to do? Is that supposed to be a man? You aren't even trying to draw it realistically or stylize in a way that can be considered a style. The fuck do you want kid, a cookie, a pat on the back?

It took you an entire day "or two" to do that? I'd rather you READ THE FUCKING STICKY AND LEARN HOW TO DRAW BEFORE THINKING YOUR SHIT IS WORTH AN ENTIRE FUCKING POST IN ANY THREAD.

>inb4 LELELE TROLLED XDDD
Being a retard on purpose isn't trolling.

I recommend Keys by Dodson, learn to draw from life, or if you're more interested in drawing from imagination, Loomis Fun with a Pencil.

Then again, if you want to draw like a kindergartner keep doing what you're doing and spend days of your already worthless time.

>>
>>2983676
Fairly generic, the figure says "ex vollyball in college, now 35", not elf.

The boobs are all wrong

ProTip - when you see a woman's nipple straight on, the other one will always be in profile, unless she had a bad tit job. You shouldn't use models with bad tit jobs, as the shape of the breasts are unnatural.

The shoulders are all wrong.

Your shading is clumsy, and I can tell from the grain of the paper you're drawing too small.

As usual here, there is more detail and care for the nipples, than the rest of the figure, and her extremities and face get blurred smudges, instead of careful rendering. Look, if you want to draw to jerk off, that's fine, but don't share it her, m'kay?

If this had been a class assignment, this is C - D level work.
>>
>>2983666
Pay attention. I can tell how you're slapping values around, you don't understand the underlying structure of a face, and are simply trying to photocopy. This might be above your skill level.

I won't bother with a list of things wrong with it, because I don't think you're at the level to understand it.
>>
>>2983588
It's terrible, because you don't have the fundamentals to work at this level.
>>
>>2983540
They wear out faster on the tablets, and it's all about how hard you press the nib, and how often. With my old tablet, I didn't press that hard, so mine would last a year or more. I wore a tablet's drawing surface out before the nib wore out. I fixed it by getting the scratches out with emery paper and polishing compound.

My Cintiq, I'm still using the nib it came with, 4 years ago, plenty of life left in it. At this rate, I have a lifetime supply, with the extras in the pen holder.
>>
>>2983588
Lol I just used this photo for reference an hour ago. "Girl head tilting up" in google and this one was of the first ones.
>>
>>2983568
Look at your reference more closely, you're missing tons of color in the leaves and shadows. Stop painting with black - the reference you have isn't black, it's dark browns and ochres and greys. The source goes from emerald green at the bottom to sap green in the middle, with yellows and ochres and umbers and all kinds of color you completely missed.

LOOK at the photo.

If it helps, squint your eyes so it's just blurry masses of color.
>>
>>2983684
Ok, so shoulders and breasts need adjustment. And the figure can use some definition and clearer shading.

>As usual here, there is more detail and care for the nipples, than the rest of the figure,
Well, the nipples are fairly easy to draw? I mean, it's a small circle and a cast shadow. I'm still learning how to draw the rest of the figure. I have gaps in my anatomy knowledge. So yeah I am lacking detail in a lot of areas. The size I drew it in also doesn't help with detail work.

>if you want to draw to jerk off, that's fine, but don't share it her, m'kay?
Just because she's nude? I'm really not. I'm just practicing my drawing.

Thanks for the feedback.

Very slowly working my way through Han's dynamic drawing. I'm at the simple forms exercise in which he wants you to draw intersecting forms as well as subtract forms from larger forms and I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly. I'm not sure how much an understanding of perspective is for this exercise since my understanding is very simplistic.
It's looking like earlier exercises in Draw a box are more my speed.
But I'm sure someone can course correct me for when I do finally make my way back around to this exercise.

Here's a page of my homework from that week from when I was taking the class. Focus on using everything from lesson one to make your lines as clean as possible. Yours looks too scratchy.

Is this something to do with Feeling the Form? How do I get better? Am I just being impatient?

Why did you change the direction of her eyes?

And, there's too much white showing under her eyes.

She has no upper eyelids. They're there, you're just not looking close enough.

Work on blending, and edges. The lighting along her nose isn't that sharp. DEFINE the ear, don't just make smudges.

The neckline is wrong. LOOK at her head and neck. You can't see the back edge of her neck, because it's in shadow, so you have to use your knowledge of anatomy to make up for it. Her neck, jawline and the back of her head are too far right.

Her left shoulder is too low, compared to her right. You're not looking closely enough at what's right in front of you, or taking measurments.

You exaggerated her features, if you overlay your painting over the photo, you'll see it. It's a common mistake to make - but also means you're not measuring the proportions.

Render the hair. At least TRY.

Her neck is all wrong. You're not describing a shape and volume and structure, you're just throwing values around.

Eyebrows are not block shapes. RENDER them.

You have the angle of the nose all wrong. You can barely see the underside in the photo, but you've painted all of it. This is painting what your brain expects to see, not what you're actually SEEING. Same for her nostrils. You'v given her a pig nose.

It's a good attempt, but you need to study the reference more, and take measurements and get the proportions and shapes right.

how would I draw the left eye when at an angle to sync with the eye with the red arrow?
there are plenty of eye tutorials but each has to do with their own type of stylization. I am aiming to draw eyes like alex ahad but I can't seem to get how he does a 3/4ths view.

do stylization questions not belong in /beg/?

How would you say I should go about bettering my blending? I have a hard time trying to portray very soft and slow transitions of value.

The ears too close to her face, the face is just not right look up some refs of 3/4 views, the hair should be flat at the top and poofy at the bottom because of the way you've drawn it, it looks too straight to be poofy at the top

Is there a trick to drawing perfectly vertical lines? I can do straight lines from any other angle by this point, but vertical lines still elude me.
