valuing it only as an abstract piece, which i don't know much about, its a bit to chaotic and vibrant. Personally it would be nice to see parts with concrete shapes. and perhaps limiting the color pallette a bit. like picture i posted. It's pretty cool though.

Hey guys! So I finally finished the league splash fan art I was working on over the weekend. The character is supposed to be opposing Fiora in her splash, so its a view of the other perspective. My idea was that it was her sister she was fighting.

It was my first time illustrating an original character, as well as an indoor space. So critique is definitely welcome (yenno, otherwise I wouldn't post here). I think my main issues are lighting. FYI, I contrasted and saturated her on purpose so she stands out from the background somewhat.

>not a fan of the face tho. Just my taste.

It's not just your taste; it really lacks form, especially the lips. Her features look like they're painted on a mannequin.

Exaggerate the perspective more on her body and it'll have a greater sense of motion, and show us what she's doing with her left hand. Not seeing it just looks awkward. Also, the placement of the sword looks weird -- like the quillon is stabbed into her hip.

I dunno if it's supposed to be motion blur or depth of field making her legs blurry, but if it's depth of field, then they should be clearer than the floor since they're closer, and if it's motion blur, then it should go in a direction and not just look blurry.

You aren't defining the forms, you're just putting the values where they're supposed to go. Sure, if you could do that with insane accuracy you couldn't tell the difference, but its not the way to go.

The lack of line weight makes it kind of hectic.

Unless the line work is just an underdrawing. But even so, it distracts from other issues that might have stood out more if the line weight was there. Plus, it's good to practice it whenever you draw.
>>
>>2973093

>>
>>2973100

That's a hard one. I'mma look at it in Photoshop for a bit... Basically I'd like to see a harder edge anywhere where there's a distinct plane change and probably on one side of her chin.

Aye bro. Just a couple of things. A lot of these are a matter of taste. I think you're going for a more hazy look so you could definitely ignore some of this.

You have a relatively distinct shadows so I think you coul have more refined or "tighter highlights" on her right side. I kind of over did them but you know what I'm getting at. Same thing goes for her hair.

I think her lips would look sexier with a little drop shadow below and a reeeeally faint highlight on the very edge of her top lip.

You could push the core shadow on her left cheek a little bit to make the image a little more 3d. Same goes for her nostrils and basically any place where two surfaces are intersecting (ambient occlusion).

I choose to make a harder edge on her the right side of her chin since you're gonna lose some of the edge on the left side anyway. I think it brings a little contrast. You could do the same on one of her nostrils.

Another thing I didn't really fix were her ears. I think they're pointing forward a little too much but that's also a matter of taste.

I dunno. It looks good any way. Are you working from reference btw?

Oh and there's a little pet peeve I have with fantasy illustrations:

I don't know why but I always think it looks weird when all the female characters have absolutely fucking 100% perfect skin. Like they're dolls or some shit. Especially warriors. I don't mean to say that they should be all wrinkly and sun damages but just a couple of moles or here and there. Just something to add a little bit of character. Another style thing but what ever...

One glaring mistake is rendering every strand of hair. It looks really amateur. Instead, try to render the form, and not the details. This is something I too struggle with.

I would recommend doing master studies of Sargent and Zorn. You'll only improve.

Try playing with perspective. Maybe have the guy be bigger in the camera coming towards us and the bird being overlapped by the guy just a touch. Maybe have him dangling from one of the branches or inching his way by crouching.

The light source is a little unclear. Make the highlights pop a little more and give that dude and the bird a fucking drop shadow. Other than that It's looking quite nice. Send more iterations when you get some rendering and other stuff done.

Tangents? Yeah, an overlapping tangent where her left arm and wing are in the same position. Another awkward tangent is happening with her left arm where the wing and arm are facing the same direction. And this might be just me, but her head feels a bit large as well. As well as her waist being too long. Squash her abdomen down to touch her pelvic bone.

>>
>>2974241
EDGES. that looks blurry as fuck
>>
>>2974259
yeah no shit, but i need actual tangible advice on how to improve that
>>
>>2974261
lasso tool or locking layers can be your best friend when it comes to hard edges.
it helps to use a mix of hard and soft round brushes too.
>>
>>2974265
Yeah, i almost never use lasso or lock layers so i can try that,
I use soft brushes and a rectangular flat bristle type brush that is not 100% hard so, that may be a problem as well.
I thought that crispness depended solely on how good your values are but boy was i wrong. Thanks anon
>>
>>2974261
use a hard edged brush. unless you're painting pixels, your edges are only going to be as hard as the brush you're using. you can blend the side that's supposed to be smooth afterwards.
or use selection or masking tools. you can also paint a few strokes on a new layer and with a hard edged eraser, erase where you want a hard edge and then merge.
>>
>>2974277
I understand, thanks!
Something that puzzles me tho, some speedpaints look very crisp and non blurry without the artist putting too much detail into it, like for example Mike Azevedo´s speedpaints. He definetely uses a hard brush, but i just cant understand how some people achieve that feel without masking or carefully erasing edges
>>
>>2974261
don't listen to them, hard edge brush and lasso aren't necessary, just do what you do on a much bigger canvas and shrink it for presentation
>>
>>2974291

You need to exaggerate your values more, too. Push those core shadows and exaggerate contrast. A couple of your forms just drift into each other like his left pectoral into his armpit, for example. The value you used for the shadow shape of his arm drips into the contour of his pec. This Ruan study is similarly mostly using a soft round, but the points the look the most crispy are points with the most extreme of contrast relative to everything else around it. Also note that even though he blows out his core shadows, he uses exaggerated reflective light to sculpt the form within the shadow shapes.

Are you talking about the original piece or my overpainting? Either way I think it's an interesting subject. How "perfect" does the skin need to be? Worst example of this would be someone like Brad Rigney. I love the guy and I really enjoy his work and he's definitely an amazing craftsman. His lighting and anatomy is spot on but I really don't like the way he renders skin to be 100% perfect every fucking time. He even talked about it being a bit of a crutch himself in his tutorial...

No he doesn't... Or at least he didn't. I watched the whole 4h. tutorial of him painting the piece "A hostile takeover" and no, he did not photobash anything. He also said that he doesn't photobash anything (or he didn't at the time) and I'll take his word for it. He seems like an honest bloke. Nowadays he does use photos some times because of scheduling and shit. I'm not really a fanboy or anything. I don't really like his style but I appreciate his attention to detail an craftsmanship...

it's unclear if she's resting her hand on her hip or keeping it at her side in a state of readiness, but if she is resting it on her hip, this redline might be useful. people tend to shift their weight onto one dominant leg when doing the hand-on-hip thing. note the (somewhat exaggerated) tilt of the shoulders and hips in the redline.

Atmosphere, I would say. There's not much technically wrong with it, but I'm not getting any emotion. Is this supposed to be majestic? Foreboding? Right now it just looks mildly interesting.

I would crop it on the right and extend the left side, plus shrink all the rocks because they're making the castle seem smaller. And study the lighting and color of a piece with a similar mood to what you want. The castle is a neat design, but it's not being presented well.

depending on if it's a soft or hard transition between values you can convey more or less curvature between planes. Or you can indicate matrial, for example hair has very soft outer edges.

Hey dude. I just noticed you didn't get any feedback on your piece so I'm posting a little overpainting. Sorry for commenting so late into your image making. Maybe you can use this advice on your next thing.

You need to start thinking of your work more in terms of planes. This is something you should do right away when you're starting your piece. Always wrap your strokes around your forms.

I changed the mouth area into something a little cleaner. I'm sorry but that zombie-ish texture you had is just somehow visually un-pleasing and way too busy.

You shouldn't go into texturing before you have all your shapes and value structure done. My overpainting was done in about 10 minutes so it's not perfect or anything but I think it illustrates some of your problems slightly.

Your monsters bone anatomy doesn't read well either so I recommend looking at some actual animals like crocodiles and even illustrations of dinosaurs.

Hope this helped. Keep up the good work!

That's fucking beautiful man. You could/should sell that shit. I'd hang it on my wall any day...
>>
>>2977501
Anon! I'm blushing...
>>
>>2977504

I'm getting an erection... From your awesome piece. Do you have anything that you've done that you've spent more than 2 hours on? Just interested.
>>
>>2977121
still putting a few in the gallery every month. nothing's selling yet but I'm just focused on making a lot of work right now, not necessarily selling.
>>
>>2977472
i feel like you should be drawing smaller. the bigger drawings don't really match the level of detail you put into each one of them. for your next one humor me and draw maybe 50% smaller.
>>
>>2977508
Ha I did this recently, I think it was in the last draw thread tho.

>>2977549
Maybe I will. This one is only 14x17 so its not exactly huge... Also I draw at an easel which kinda lends itself to bigger strokes, yknow?

14x17 is probably actually an appropriate size for charcoal, but maybe try pencils instead of charcoal. just to see how you'd do. i've never seen you do more controlled smaller wrist drawing instead of gestural bigger shoulder drawing. maybe you'd be really good at it.
>>
>>2977577
Word, thanks for the advice! Do you pencil sketch a lot?
>>
>>2977577

Here's a stupid question: How do people always know what other people have posted here previously? Is it just the style or can you actually somehow see their information?

I'm a guy who used to post here like 6 years ago and I came back ~3 months ago so I'm pretty oblivious about a lot of stuff that's been going on here for a while...
>>
>>2977628
i used to pencil sketch a lot of larger drawings and charcoal sketch a lot of smaller drawings which led to a lot of mistakes.

something you have to keep in mind for every medium you are using is the size of the stroke you can make with the material.

charcoal and pastel lends itself to bigger lines and its more like painting, and pencils and pens can make really fine lines so it's more like drawing.

But the best art is usually a reduction or enlargement of the subject matter. There's no art to me in sight-sizing to death, thats why i have a hard time appreciating Sargent. that's just recreating what you are looking at with minimal interpretation. When you draw smaller or paint bigger it allows your creativity to breathe a little better.

that doesn't always mean you need to draw the tiniest things possible when you are using pencils though. I find when I'm painting I make the subject around 50% bigger, and when I'm drawing with pencil I make the subject around 50% smaller.

You could continue to use charcoal if you like it but maybe get some huge newsprint if that's really what you like to do. Make huge drawings and really explore the medium if you like charcoal. 14"x17" is not really pushing what the medium can do.

my only complaint is that the branches don't cast shadows on the goat, and its values are also too dark (>>2977290 fixed this). Everything else is nice

Hey thanks, anon! I really gotta think more in planes and not get so caught up in detail during the finish. And you're right, the zombie-ish feature was moreorless added on near the end of my painting process, no real thought put into it. Thanks for the tips!

I'm painting this final piece for a uni project. I've been whittling away at it for a while now, but what are the biggest issues that need to be addressed here and how should I sort them out? I'm also not sure on what the values should be like for the dragon in the centre.
>>
>>2977836
the people in the image are very stiff looking and their proportions are weird, randomly thin arms, short legs, thin legs, fat legs etc etc
>>

>>2977836
Guy on the left feels very flat and the foreground is awkwardly mixing in with the middle in terms of values and color (as if the guys are standing on some sort of weird cliff overlooking the desert?)
The creature right now feels lost in this mixture of values. I would light the creature up and perhaps putting a bit more distance between it and the closest dude pointing at him. It'll also make the creature feel bigger.
Fix the photobash shenanigans you have going on in the back

If you're going to detail the foreground elements, also slowly detail the things around them with less intensity (such as the wizard guy that has pretty high detail compared to the simple block & scratch wall)
>>
>>2977862
I agree, it's really fucking hard to construct bodies without references in the right poses and perspective. I'll have to do more studies in the future.

Back to drawing... Rebuilding the value structure. Doing some photobashing on those dragon fucks. Anything I should take into consideration before going into color and rendering? I'm going to lose most of that photobashed shit and also most of the über 3D rendering looking shit I got an the female so no need to comment on that...
>>
>>2978236
her action/gesture doesn't really read. I get that she's supposed to have just cut off the dragon's head, but her posing doesn't really convey that.
>>
>>2978244

Good point... I'm probably gonna make a streak of blood coming from that dragons neck flying in a circular pattern to her sword. I think that'd work?
>>
>>2978248
it would help, but i think the viewer already gets that she's made a backward swing that lopped off the head. the bigger issue is that her motion in general is unclear. is she jumping, falling or hovering? to me it looks like she's falling, but that doesn't make sense given the action and the placement of the character and dragon head.

>>
>>2978251

Ahh, I imagine her dropping towards the direction of the Hydra head she just cut off. Thanks for mentioning this. Need to do something about that if it's not reading properly...
>>
>>2978251

Anything else, ANYBODY? This is the point where I fuck up my shit most of the time. Composition and value structure etc...
>>
>>2978253
>>2978257
the streak helps. i'd recommend you play through the scenario in your head -- if she's falling towards the dragon, how is the cut below her feet? how did she swing the sword to get the cut at that low placement? did she bend over (while falling down) or is the dragon falling faster than she is? none of the answers are clear to me from just looking at the pic.
>>
>>2978265

Got your point... All this stuff made sense to me when I did the 3D thingy. The dragon head is actually extremely close to her. Like at swing range. I can see that it isn't reading in my illustration though. Hmm... This is gonna be tricky. Good points. Thanks.

Aspiring furshit artist here. I apologize in advance if furshit isn't welcome here.

Anyway I spent about 5 hours polishing this turd. Someone told me the body is way too long and the pose makes it look like she is paralyzed from the neck down.
Got any other critique?
>>
>>2978671
>>2978671
>if furshit isn't welcome here.
i dont think it is.

front legs face downward and hind legs are turned sideways, but there's no clear twist to the body. and the pose you went with for the hind legs is really stiff.
>>
>>2978671
Look at either a person or human laying down in a similar pose, the hindlegs defy gravity.
>>
>>2978726
>>2978731
Thanks.
How would you make the body twist? I can't think of a good way to indicate that the body is twisted.
Also, couldn't really find any reference but I just tried laying down in that pose and you're right, that pose is pretty much impossible to reach.
