I'm going to repost because I don't think anyone saw the stuff at the end:

I barely studied anatomy and decided to give this a shot. Am I way in over my head?
also please ignore anything below the belly button i only put that there for practice but also to see if other body parts were proportional.

One poster mentioned that I lacked understanding of perspective but I would like someone to redline any fix to my figure or draw the redline for the boxes for perspective for a better understanding on my part. If anyone could I would really appreciate that.

Current wip.. trying to improve alot.. still have to color the rest and need to tackle the hair which is going to be a chore... But also trying like with the lips to take away some of the lines to just define with value.. first real attempt to blend that into my style. Anyway would love any tips or suggestions. Atm a little tool limited because I am working of sketchbook for galaxy.

LOL you better not change the pose after i redlined yo shit... nah jk i was actually gonna suggest change up the pose if it'll give a better image.

Like i made the pose mine in the side one and i changed it up so there is negative space visable between her arm and torso. it looks nicer that way. Also it not a straight up front view so push one side of the body to be more curvy and have a better curve to the body. also the hips how you drew it is really unappealing. not that mine is much better. also your arms seem wayyy too long. but good job on hands way better than any of my attempts desu.
>>
>>2963637
lol in the edited pose i made ignore the hands whatever you do for hands is better than what i do. but for the rest i think it should be okay.

This is some really good stuff man, thanks a lot. Your edit is a lot closer to what I intended it to be. I really need to do something about the arms because I think it's a little too late for me to change the entirely of the pose since I want to have something completed.

Creepy, like an AI trying to recreate the original.

>>
>>2963802
I feel like a lot of the detail here is misplaced. The eyes particularly stand out, they look glassy and a little creepy. The skin also looks odd, the way you shaded it makes it look a bit slimy, you could blend out the shading and add some more texture there if you wanted to, as well as remove the wrinkles around the eyes. You missed some opprotunities to add detail where it could have looked nice, like on the feather, the dagger, or the hair. They look very rough compared to the face, which is more "realistic." You could even go in and add some stitching/more folds to the clothes to make them balance with the face better.
>>
>>2963838
The wide nose and big eyes are a little off putting, especially with how the mouth is more realistically proportioned. Were you going for a stylized look or not?I think you could try adding more line eights into your hatching/cross hatching as well, some edges are getting lost, like the edge between the shadowed neck and the hair.
>>
>>2963906
thanks for the feedback. I was going for a somewhat stylized look, but still trying to find my style.

If you're trying to find oyur style, don't be afraid to mimic other artists styles instead of just stylizing directly from reality. Right now you're in this middle zone, where your art doesn't look quite like it;s supposed to be stylized, and doesn't look quite like it's supposed to be realistic. Do some studies of other artist's styles and pick and choose elements from their work to incorporate into your own
>>
>>2964000
Sounds like a good ide, I will try that. Do you have any examples of great pen and ink artists I might not know about?

I'm reading how to draw and I'm stuck in the chapter about drawing cars, and I'm really confused. He talks about all these construction methods to build complex solid forms, yet I've never seen I'm nor feng use them, are they a 100% necessary? do I need to grind that chapter for another 15 days?

TL;DR
could I get some advice on the composition?

does it feel unnecessary crammed? it's intentional, because it's a tavern, but I don't want it feel forced. I was thinking about a snail like comp starting with the two fig in the centre, moving the eyes to the left and finally to the goblin on the right.
the centre needs to be more highlighted and moved up ( I wanna put a chimney behind the table) and the goblin's too dark.
>>
>>2964072
When I look at this I see 3 different subjects fighting for dominance. The woman, the two men and the table, then the goblin or whatever. It's really hard to read it as one whole image/composition, it's more like a sketch page collage. To fix this you need to change sizes/relations, make the goblin closer to the camera he's fighting dominance of the pic with the girl, imho. Also, I feel like the girl is on a completely different perspective plane compared to the rest of the tavern, make sure she's grounded!
The goblin isn't too dark, you NEED contrast to make sure everything reads correctly, remember values before color. Values can make or break, so have even contrast, no muddiness.
Also, good work on anatomy and mark making :)
>>
>>2964098
thank you that is good advice. strangly I feel like the goblin is in perspective as he's completely flat and in profile. it feels like he's leaning to his left.

Necessary for what? You reading Scott Robertson's book? I don't think it's really about "what" you should be drawing. It's just about being able to see shit in 3d space or, you know... How to draw. You don't really need to grind anything if you can do that stuff using other media like 3d or what ever to get a quick and accurate result for concept art but knowing that stuff definitely helps.

Anyways your stuff looks pretty good. Would be nice to see one of those less angular cars from a 3/4 perspective though. Shit's hard. I'm definitely no expert...

>>
>>2964887
I mean there isn't really anything to anchor with. Figures done in space like this... aren't that good to practice perspective on. It seems like you atleast kept everything in check tho. What I mean is that we are obviously looking down on her since we can see a lot of her clavicle/shoulder area and a bit of the top of the head and we don't see anything else that is contradicting that. Countless times I've seen people do the top with us looking down on the figure but when they move to the hips and thighs they draw the butt like we looking from under the figure.

So basically there isn't any contradicting perspective so that's good. If you want to practice perspective use atleast 2 things in the image so we can see the relationship.
>>
>>2964909

I have a bit of a fetish for skinny/anorexic chicks. But I don't really like it when it doesn't fit, as in the ribs were too pronounced while her stomach looked slightly full/chubby. So that doesn't make sense so I toned down on the skinniness.

lifted the boobs up and stuff, also I didn't use any reference, which explains the awkward stance, I just tend to draw too saggy instead of too perky, while we all aim to hit that sweet point. It's breasts after all and they fall where gravity does. However considering how heavily stylized she is and skinny, such large/saggy boobs are hardly coherent with the composition.

but live and learn, I'll do better on my next painting.

this one has a nice form and pose and its almost like the model is dirty and covered in grit. viewing these is like an addiction for me, they make me feel so calm and I would like to be like them.

my psychologist says that its a signal of the inability to accept mental illness/instability and being afraid to reach out for help from those around them.

By changing your physical form to something clearly sick/dying you are communicating to your bystanders that you need help, but you don't need to admit it outloud. (In my family we aren't allowed to talk about our feelings.)

And most times depression and anxiety is overlooked since it has no physical symptom. its all 'in your head'. When I started being bulimic, it wasn't visible either, since I would both binge and purge. So now I subconsciously strive to be anorexic, since it is clearly the better one of all the eating disorders[and yes I know how deluded that sounds].

I'm not going to critisize the fact that you like an unhealthy lifestyle but I will continue to give you crit on your painting:
The reason why she doesn't look like the girl you posted is because she doesn't have muscle stirations, it actually looks like theres a little bit of fat bubbling up around her ribs, but no muscle underneath so its showing the shape of her fat on top of her bone. She has a very skinny-fat looking look. I'd know cause this is pretty much my body type from drawing and not exercising all day.

If you want her to look more like pic related than make your shadows less blocky, make them more like thick lines.

See, the girl you posted is pretty much a rectangular prism with small irregularities over top of the surface, like a long box with a topographical map covering it.
>>
>>2965660
>>2965655
>>2965646

So are you like an anorexic girl who likes to draw people who look like you or are you an anorexic boy who likes skelly girls too, or are you a normal sized anorexic girl fantasizing over anorexic girls and thefore drawing them as you try to wittle down your size?
I'm just curious, no bully.
>>
>>2965876
I think I just got what you mean and it can be very helpful. It's probably even harder to do those small irregularities which is why I veered towards doing the fat in the first place, (like symbol drawing but for texture) but it makes perfect sense since the skin is a layer upon bone and muscle instead of fat on bone. Thank you anon
>>
>>2965856
That makes a lot of sense. I had a friend who was anorexic before and she clearly wanted to look anorexic because she hated herself and wanted to die (she was borderline).
But I knew her very well, and an underlying feeling I think she had was that she wanted to appear weak. I don't know why, but she /always/ wants to appear weak, pathetic and needy even when she was very capable.
It wasn't like your situation, she had a supportive family and I gave her an exorbitant amount of attention and sympathy. In the end, I believe she has Munchausen syndrome.

I understand why you want to look anorexic, it is good for people to know that you are hurting. Is there some other way you can do this without killing yourself or by possibly just talking to different people or accepting the fact that your family is not sympathetic, and that is a flaw in their character, not yours?
>>
>>2965881
I'm a normal weight girl and I sometimes jump into being chubby and sometimes slightly fit. I used to eat uncontrollably as a child ( binging) then started to throw it up. For a long time I was doing really unhealthy stuff and no one around me realized it or even considered it a problem. Mom didn't think so. So over the years I wished I looked like I had a problem, a problem you could see on the outside. But I was too proud to cut, since mom had said it was weak and for pathetic people. Sometimes I starve a lot (when I'm chubby) until I fall back into normal weight and then I start binging and purging again. So it's effectively like a pendulum.

But on a side note, I'm not actually sure if I'm ready to be anorexic since being anorexic represents perfection and having reached happiness and I'm so used to the misery of hating my own body and being afraid to go out in public. I hate crowds too.

So I guess in a way, when I reach too close to my underweight goals I am subconsciously sabotaging myself, like when you don't study for a test the day before because it's easier to admit you got a bad grade cause you didn't study, instead of getting a bad grade cause you're just stupid... On a side note, my behavior is classified as EDNOS which is a general mix of symptoms like I mentioned before, instead of only starving(anorexia) or only purging(bulimia) and binging(binge disorder)

But I don't know, it's all fucked up.

I see, it actually sounds similar to my friend as well. She never did reach an anorexic point, maybe a thinnish girl but in the end she gained a lot of weight.
I can't really motivate you to stop by telling you that you're going to hurt your body, so maybe you should know that you might just get kind of fat if you keep doing that.

Do you live at home with your family? Perhaps you should move out .
You're not a bad painter, you have a ton of potential and if you're not making money doing it already it won't take you long to get to a freelancing level. You're here on /ic/ so I know you care about it, try and focus on what you want your life and your paintings to look like instead of your body.
I support you doing art based off of your disorder, I think it really helps.

Munchausen is a very scary disease, if I remember correctly borderlines tend to have a habit of making themselves look like the victim? Which is kinda munchausen-ish now when I think about it

I'm trying to get better, I recently upped my dosage of setraline(anxiety and depression) to 100mg instead of 50 mg and it is helping, also meeting a psychologist.

It's funny that you mention alternate ways cause I have been doing experiments at nights like binge drinking alcohol, eating toilet paper, eating crayons, chewing on broken mirror glass that was supposed to be used for decoration and so forth.

But the obvious is probably something healthy and exercise, but the thing is I am so nervous I can't be around other people like in the gym or at training classes so I gradually fall into the pattern of skipping classes since I am so stressed around other people.

This thing made me think twice about the whole " is all /ic/ with crippling depression?" lol

Or maybe to a coherent fighting sequence if you remember that. /ic/'s problem is that everyone is so hyper critical(and they know all the other anons are hypercritical) that they are afraid to post their own works, and those who post are seldom critiqued because the "post your work" is commented imminently on those who critiqued it.

it's hard to make out anything. i would say you need more contrast to define out objects and the shapes that make them. Composition-wise I would argue that you need to put something on the right side to balance it out. The railroad tracks looks oddly out of perspective
>>
>>2965959
dude polishing a turd is a meme. if you never finish anything how will you ever finish anything. trust me all i did was fundamentals but now i cant even finish a stupid piece. trust me its better to polish a turd then never have polished that turd.
>>
>>2965959
The train, the tracks, and the tunnel to the left of both seem to accentuate the warped perspective.
It's the only part of the painting that's bothering me and it's really noticeable.

I imagine the tracks and that other set of older tracks to the left are supposed to be parallel so I suggest you make the tracks a tad wider than they are now.
I can't understand how to go about fixing it so my redline was worthless to the both of us.

I did a really quick overpaint
I don't know if this is from reference or not, but anyway, you have to push the values further, specialy on the black parts which usually contrast more.
Also, very important, don't shade with flat values, try to give form and lightning with every shape.
I know it's not the same with a pen, and maybe you wanted to be more subtile, but even with a pen you can get wey darker that this.
And just one detail more, you seem to have simpol-shaded the eye.Check how bird eyes usually look on reality rather than on a tutorial
>>

Usually I give the opposite of this advice, because people need more fundamentals and less concept. But I think you should spend time examining your personal ethics, your lifestyle, etc, and how that affects the work you make. It is affecting the work you make, whether you like it or not. Think about how short life is and if you're spending a fraction of your precious time making something, what do you really want to make?

>lol man I just wanna draw hot girls with psychedelic influence in an appealing, colorful, graphic manner

I'm not saying that's wrong at all. I'm just saying that you could go *so* much further and do something *really* cool. It's fine if your work is ultimately vapid, but it could be vapid in a better way than any of the other shit out there.

Right now you're on track to be a designer that works for a slick NYC ad firm that makes cool but ultimately forgettable commercial art. However, if you dig deep, you could be like mucha: still making vapid commercial art, but it's unbearably cool and completely unforgettable.

tl;dr, basically
>>2965831

You're making eye candy that's fun but ultimately soulless. You know what you want to do, but not well enough.

also, use bigger brushes and focus on stroke economy. There's way to many little strokes in that hair. look to Leyendecker.

Not bad for what it is. Spend some time life drawing though, the whole thing lacks a real sense of solidity. Also, pick more interesting references. Would've helped if you posted a larger image.

I think the drawing is begging for some saturation in some parts. The yellow could really pop if you push the saturation more.

The front main dudes values seem off. It seems like he should be more harshly lit like everything around him, but hes not.

The composition could really benefit from cropping it at an angle so the horizon line isn't horizontal.

Overall I feel the values and colors are making things a bit muddy. I think the burst of light in the distance could look good a bit more blown out.

I attached a quick mock up of some of the things I mentioned. Just my thoughts - good luck!

Your light sources seem all over the place - you have a filtered sun from the rear, yet the shield (or foam mattress?) is lit from the left, big guys' left arm is in shadow and his sword is highlighted on the underside.
Modelling-wise the skull on his left side looks like its sunk into the hip and the right hip looks displaced from the line of the leg. I hope you're aiming for standing pose because if he's supposed to be moving the torso and head need to be more congruent with the legs. With the shoulders lit up, I'd address the neck.
The armor on his left arm looks like it's slipped down and would hamper his sword-swinging, and I'm not sure that the heads of the other dudes need to be so close to the foreground and yet cropped - it looks like a still or a photograph rather than an artwork and leads the eye out of the picture.

Everything looks really soft right now; try to more clearly define your edges.
The color palate seems really washed out right now too. This could be a stylistic choice on your part, but if you wanted to make it appear more vibrant you could try adding color to the shadows, instead of making it monochromatic.
There's also not a lot of contrast with her hair and the background.

I don't have any tips on the mangrove-ish roots. If you can make this work with your current composition that'll be great. I don't think there's anything interesting about your image at the moment. It's just a smelly swamp. Your best solution might be to add another light source to the image to get an interesting read on those mangroves and stuff. A light of some kind. I went with the easiest solutions on my 5 second over paint. I just put a character there to add something so it wouldn't be so boring... Anyways, you definitely need to do something! Your indication, rendering and atmosphere is excellent so you got that. Just try to make it more interesting somehow!

The anatomy on the hand is kind of fucked but I don't care as it works in the image and you could have done the ends of her hair better but who fucking cares... That's a nice piece you got there.

Tganks! Yeah I still cant figure out whats wrong with the hand but it looks completely fucked to me when i flip it. oh well. better planning next time.

I think working with some softer or perhaps bigger brushes would work as well. The hand and parts of the hair feel a bit messy and scratchy as opposed to the cleanness of the face
It also distracts from the face since my eye is constantly pulled towards the thumb part of the palm

really like the face and the colors are great too

Kevin Spaceman? You got the eyes, but everything else is slightly off. He has a more bulbous nose, his mouth is wider, chin is softer, ears are longer, and he has a bit more hair than that. Good rendering, though.

You don't really. You don't have enough knowledge of forms, lighting and anatomy to proceed meaningfully.

If you're bent on continuing, you'd need to find or take references and use that to fill in your knowledge gaps.

Realistically you just want to keep hammering at your fundies. Personally I'd just move on from this.

You need to start paying attention to the direction of your light source in 3D space (not just up and to the right, but is it forward or back in relation to the plane of the page. You then need to track the angles of all the major planes of the thing you're drawing. Ignoring specular reflections, planes that are orthogonal to the light source will be brightest. Planes that are parallel to the light source (if it's a single, distant light source) will mark the terminators of your shadows. Experience will tell you exactly how bright or dark you need to go for those mentioned planes and all planes in between.

Hey dude. You might want to check out this tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtDlmLYvWjE

The image you're referencing is pretty basic. I'd go with:

>Line art
>Flat local colors
>Highlights
>Ambient occlusion
>Core Shadows
>Textures
>Paint over everything with hard brush

I also might consider adding another harder light source for some cool rim lights on your focal area (the face).

Hope this helped.

So I'm attempting a perspective shot and the head is a bit on the creepy side. I'm thinking of changing the head angle a bit so her head is facing slightly more to her right. That way the nose isn't as head on.

I may just have to restructure the face a little and give it more space/size on some of the elements of it. I'm also trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the arms.

Any thoughts?

Aye! So here's what I did:

I removed the weird highlight from her boob. Boobs are round and you have a highlight that makes it look kind of angular like a coin or something so I changed that. Just basic lighting for basic forms type of thing...

I chanve I changed her foot position a little. I see what you were going for with the original but I don't think it works for what you're doing. Just a spider-man thing...

You had a nice rim light going on on her chin so I was a brave boy and added that to other forms in her hair and tiddie. It just makes more sense. When you have a good thing you should stick with it!

I added a stronger highlight on her prominent cheek and I added some reds to her nose and cheek. We don't want her to look like a wax doll...

Just minor things. I envy your use of interesting posing!

I didn't really do much with the background. I think you should add some elements that go along those lines to avoid tangent with your character. Have "something" that goes along those lines and it'll probably work. You could try using some photos of roof tops with some field blur and drawing over that shit for example. I don't know. I'm just a drugged up hobo...

I don't mean to be an asshole but to me it just looks like a highly sexualized image of some chick with huge boobs that isn't really drawn all that well. I could still give you feedback if you tell me what it's "trying to be"...

So this is the only thing I could come up with ub 10 minutes. It's really bad even by my low standards. I don't know anything about creating pornographic art so this is all fucked up.

Only ideas I got were:

- Put her other arm on her waist. Looks more natural.

- Have two light sources. One or her face/tits and one from below for her pussy.

- Concentrate on your core shadows. That's what'll make it pop.

Hope you can pull it off! I know I probably couldn't...
>>
>>2969454

I'll add another tip though. If you want to do shit like this for clients you might want to get a software like Daz 3D. You can pose characters and change their physical attributes to your liking. If you have more cash you might also consider getting Key shot so you can light those characters. You'd always have good reference for all the poses and anatomy and shit...

Hey man! That's fucking great! I'm still sticking with some of the stuff that I did in my quick over painting.

- There's a weird dark/over saturated thing on the breast to our right. I'd fix that.

- Add the ambient blue light you have on her cheek (and now on her hair) to the shoulder to our right and maybe a little pit on her right tiddy. Think about it. It would definitely hit that part too if it's hitting her face...

- Change the background to something other than white! It just makes it so much easier to work on the piece! the head of the sword is white too! It doesn't read well! Exclamation marks...

Other than that this still looks really good! I hope you post more stuff when this is more finished. GG niggahh...

Cool! I'm guessing that's a study? I'm not really a great painter my self (Pic related. Just a 4h. study). It's just much easier to give feedback to others because you can see the mistake and make "harsh" decisions on stuff when it's not your own work. You're less precious about that stuff. Painting females is especially hard to me. I like painting/sculpting monsters and muscular males. I think you could afford playing around with more intense lighting scenarios and shit since your basic painting abilities are really good. You should also try doing over paintings on other peoples stuff here. It's not just about helping others. It's a really good way of learning stuff in general...

I'm going to agree and disagree with you on this. I think his/her skills with fundementals are relatively good enough for what he's doing (creating comicy Leagy style art). Most of the issues I see in his image have to do with inconsistent rendering with lighting, some anatomy and workflow.

I don't really think that there's a huge gap. Mostly stuff that can be figured out by asking some questions on teh intarwebz. Something that working with a little bit of 3D rendering might fix.

It is a flow of shapes or lines that flow into eachother causing the forms to naturally blend (which you want to avoid)

I think 2 looks the best with the slight increase in contrast but it mostly depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you wish to add more color variety I'd suggest grabbing 3 and blending it in with the original

I'll experiment with the face later tonight, right now I mostly just want to make a bunch of thumbnails and generate some ideas

Great use of textured/variety of brushes, but if you struggle on bigger scenes then thats all the more reason to post those instead of what is in your comfort zone

not that anon, but my issue with the mountains are the lines, if you used just watercolors to make the mountains it would become more subtle. I really love the grass and the house tho, really nice job

I completely fucked up the hand, but I think I got a nice balance and cleanliness to the line art. So I'm fairly happy with it.

Any thoughts?

This thread will probably sage quick, it's getting full, but help pls, with everything about this shitty sketch. I understand the lineart is abhorrent, I'm gonna fix that.

Also if /k/ is here tell me what the sexiest gun to give her would be.

Only thing I'd change is to make more of her face visible from bag-chan.

This is really good! Only thing you might want to work on are the values on the guys face. I'd like to see a little more variation there. It's really good as it is, so don't ruin it. (I didn't do anything to it. Just turned into B&W)
>>
>>2971181
You could facilitate a critique if you post the ref aswell.

Either way, it looks really nice. I can't see any glaring flaws.

It does look rather flat, thanks

Here's another one. For now the only finished part is the face
>>
>>2971197
thanks.
I don't know how faithfull you wanted to be to the original. If you wanted to do it more accuratly i'd say the contrast betwen the shadow side an light side of the face could be pushed quite a bit. The temperature of the face should be alot cooler aswell. And I would prefere to have less blended planes, but that is taste based. I realise that might be alot of reworking to do, so maybe just think of that till next time. its really nicely executed.

Changing the palette to a cooler one would require me to paint almost the entire thing again. But as you and >>2971191
said I really should darken the side of his face.
Thanks a lot, for once I got some good advice here
>>
>>2970753
alright here's where you fucked up.
You're drawing in symbols: "neck. shoulder, tiddy, midriff" etc. You have to LOOK AT THINGS.

Look at your reference. you can't even see below her tits, it goes breasts, gun, thigh from top to bottom, so why are you drawing her belly button in the lineart?
Try drawing AROUND the figure. Ignore the fact there's something you're trying to draw and draw the negative spaces instead.
Also ffs don't do this scratchy line business. One confident, inaccurate line is better than 100 accurate lines that don't know where they're supposed to be.
