Where's your lightsource? Define a lightsource and drop planes facing away from it into shadow. Group the shapes and patterns together. Make sure your drawing reads on a thumbnail.
That's all I can think of right now. Good technique, but the lighting is really off putting.

Although I am but a beginner, I think this thread is a more proper place for my question.
Currently my backgrounds look like this at best. I want to be able to draw gorgeous (photorealistic or animoo realistic) backgrounds, and I stumbled upon this tutorial.

http://www.mclelun.com/2015/10/anime-background-tutorial.html

Obviously, you can't find a reference for everything, but if there are fellows who used this or a similar method... say, do you think getting familiar with this technique would help one in understanding the key points of an awesome background?

I think the problem is if you just do that you will end up relying on photos all the time to help you with your backgrounds. You won't learn how to set one up on your own with good composition/perspective/lighting, etc, and will have to rely on finding or taking good photos to do so.

fml, while I was looking through tutorials I found a color scheme which I used just to see how it worked.

After I started painting with it I realized that my normal edition of coloring skin was vastly inferior and I had never made skin look so attractive before. Pic related, the yellow blob is my usual style, while the other is with the color scheme.

I would like to be happy but the giddiness is overshadowed by the fact that I feel like an incompetent thief for using someone's color scheme( they released it with a tutorial though) and that on my own I wouldn't be there.

But still I can't fathom going back to what I used to do, I have no sans on coloring on my own...

what am I supposed to do?

It's a valid technique especially if your focus is the figures but you need to be sure you use royalty free stock (Googling this phrase will get you plenty that you can use for profit so you don't have to worry about linking back or anything).

But you should also learn how to paint from scratch because without that basic skill you won't b able to make proper scene extensions or add to the scene convincingly.

Yes. You can't stylize life convincingly without a basis in fundamentals. It'll look like shitty deviantart babys first animu drawings.
>>
>>2961980
A bust isn't just a head. Needs shoulders at the least to be a bust. This is a head.

The rendering is decent but the actual construction of the face is creepy and uncanny valley-like because it's so far from life or even a stylization of life.

Thanks. I was pretty far done by the time I got critique (pic related is first one so you can see the difference. I fixed some of the concerns as best I could but I didnt get much specific critique aside from "xyz sucks."

Funny enough people raged over this but ignored one I posted later in the thread in a different style so is it mostly the style that sucks? What about it?

I do draw dynamic poses sometimes this was just something simple to get me started into drawing again, took a break because i have some wrist damage (Dont work in a kitchen if you're planning to do this professionally one day...)

I just want to know what specifically is wrong. if the face is jacked, in what way. If the coloring is jacked, in what way? Ive looked at it too much and legitimately can't tell aside from some wonkiness on the eyes and maybe the mouth (two weakpoints in many of my drawings).

We have all been there where we can't tell the specific fuck ups on it because we've looked at it for too many hours. I flipped it horizontally and even upside down and have fixed everything that I saw wrong through that but obviously there's more, and I gotta know so I know what to look at.

Saying "life" doesn't help. If it's the eyes, say the eyes.

Thanks. I just want a critique that will actually help me is all.

>>
>>2962362
Im not that anon but I agree to a small extent. The facial features are really flat because of that style. If you go with this style you need to be able to back it up with good coloring in my opinion.

For moe I suggest studying K-on to see small details that will add more dimension to the face without diminishing the moe style too much.
>>
>>2962253

back back (forearm, up to deltoid) is a little too large compared to the forward facing arm (or alternatively his left arm is too small). I know your doing a 1 v 1 of your ref, just saying.

>>2961236

I found your ref. I would be a bit more considerate of form, specifically I like that you're doing this to probably get a feel of his lines, but look at the rectangular shape of the claws coming out in your ref vs your work. The forms a bit lost on the claws. Also If you're learning to get his lines, this is great, but I would give it another try trying to get his lines with a gesture. Don't know if that makes sense but certain areas like on the legs and shadows seem kinda scratchy/not fully confident.

These are great 1 to 1s either away! Keep em up.

I'm curious to see your originals.

Hows this looking overall?
I spent like 10 years doing different facial expressions on her and I'm still not sure what I want.
>>
>>2962368
>The facial features are really flat

isn't that something to be expected most of the time when you draw anime? most everything among anime drawn faces denotes a false sense of form when information like shading is so limited and color is removed. Even your K-on's faces could be seen flat. the only real reason why anyone sees any form at all is due to context like the edges of the face and jawline and seeing the face at multiple angles.

I'm only talking about heavily stylized anime here what with big eyes and whatnot but the logic is all there. There's nothing really wrong with the face in terms of it being flat because of the style. Sure the right eye might be at an odd angle but that's not due to the style in any way. and if the artist really wanted to define the form of the face more without it looking flat then changing the style altogether is hardly the first thing to suggest.

>Ugh.
>You arent even good enough to be thinking about style yet

I can't help but read this as though you're actually just incredibly buttfrustrated or envious. On what cosmic level gave you the idea the artist is so bad that they aren't even allowed to consider what style they would want to draw in? Or rather, what the fuck does that even mean? I wasn't aware that you had to be up to a certain point in order to even be allowed to consider style into one's curriculum of learning.
>>
>>2962377

Thanks for taking the time to crit.

>Don't know if that makes sense but certain areas like on the legs and shadows seem kinda scratchy/not fully confident.

One thing I was really struggling with in those areas is getting a smooth line with the pen. I've been on the same nib for months (with very infrequent usage) and it really started shitting the bed on that one. It just wouldn't lay down a line without giving it some pressure to start, and that makes it more intimidating to use.

When I did the most recent one (with the out of proportion forearms) I replaced the nib and thinned out my ink a little for good measure. It was way easier to control. I reckon I've spent about 4-5 hours with the pen today and just in that time I'm feeling much more comfortable with it.

As for originals, there's really nothing to see. Pretty crap all around. I've just started tackling this Chris Samnee drawing with my brush pen and it's way harder because it's finishing rather than inking and my skills are pretty derp.
>>
>>2962415
unless the anon is the Michelangelo of drawing art and posted proof of it no one should really take what anyone on /ic/ says wholeheartedly, especially if they're not even critiquing you and especially if it sounds like they're establishing a new dumb-as-shit rule to art. and especially from someone who unironically typed "ugh" and said to himself that it was okay.

he could've just said "just read the sticky" and that would've been the end of it. But then he went on to say that the artist is as incapable as a pile of rocks and doubted their ability to draw, so it's hard not to see them as anything but buttmad.
>>
>>2962406
"Even X could be seen as Y" implies that X is one of the farthest from Y of its kind. And that is definitely not the case with MoeShit-On.

I'm honestly eager to see more of your work. I don't think it's a weird combination of Disney and anime, just realistic and overly simplified, like I said. If you want something in-between eastern and western you can totally have that, but right now you don't know HOW to do it.

The face looks especially unappealing, she looks retarded. Study some ahegao faces but you should also find another way to draw nipples.

Lastly her left boob looks like it sits in her armpit, with her arm going this far forward it should move more with her shoulder, as the pec meets the shoulder. But maybe its just the nipple placement, it just looks a lil weird.

the mouth is lazy af, the eyes don't seem like they're aligned with the face and the pupils are looking in two different directions. Everything else is good enough though, so it shouldn't be difficult to make it look nice

>>2962383
I know her pose is supposed to be tense, but don't mistake that for a stiff gesture. Next time, try to stick out her chest and bring her shoulders back to add some nice curve to her spine(and emphasize the titty of course). I think you arrived at a pretty good expression though

It looks like it's trying to show you the landmarks of the body. Each x on the body represents a major mass or important land mark like the pelvis, elbows, knees, etc. pretty simple stuff but they made it look so complicated cause of the big x's. and I think the ribbony line is supposed to show you the rhythm/flow of the body.

It's weird but in a good way. I like the color choices and the lighting. As a sexy piece it's not but it's cool as it's own thing. The background is utter shit though and she blends into it from the thumbnail (I thought it was a moth desu). Something like this you want to pop off the background.
>>2963406
It's cute but it's as basic ass as basic gets.
Did you freehand this lineart or use a tool that does most of the steady work for you? I'm getting major feels for the latter. If you did freehand it, you need to just in general work on your line weights.
>>2963409
Ooh yeah I see it too. Shouldn't be a hard fix though anon.
>>

Thank you. Now that i've had a break from it I can see what you mean. I'm going to in the end need to color adjust it in photoshop anyway (drawing it in krita) but i'm going to add another, idk, layer of darker shadows to some parts to give it more depth.

The skin isn't done though and i might need to restart it because I used the wrong base color (The background color threw me off).

Thank you, i'm glad i'm getting some good feedback on this. I guess it shows that taking your time and using references is the way to go haha (Legit been staring at ice cream for hours so I broke my diet to get some ice cream).

Feels like she got sunburnt on the palms of her hands. You seems to have tried giving some kind of dynamic pose but the body looks a bit messy because of that, like the part of the torso above the breasts doesn't seems to belong to the bottom part. The breasts shapes also seems weird. And the hips looks too much rotated on the right (her right) compared to the waist. Her neck also doesn't seems to be on the middle of the shoulders and is too thick for an anime girl.

Alright, my art ain't perfect myself, so feel free to accuse me of Dunning Kruger's, but here's what I see

From what's going on here, it seems you aren't thinking of the shapes of the body as 3D forms, but instead just as lines and flat shapes. The chest of the right body is super flat, remember that the ribcage is basically an egg shape with sheets of muscle over it. The shape of the chest will be more round/boxy than flat. Additionally, consider how body parts will rotate, such as the arms. Since the torso is turned away from the viewer, the right arm will be turned towards the viewer and the left arm will be turned away. Here it seems like you had the left arm parallel to the viewer.

So yeah, go over you fundies some more, anatomy, perspective, construction, all that yadda yadda. Do some figure drawings and read up on anatomy, I like Hampton, they really helped me get a better grasp of the human body.

Good lighting but the perspective on the head is a little off, it makes her face look flat.
>>
>>2964751

Oh, I see what you are saying, the problem is just the connections. I don't know how to really "connect" them if I fully follow the construction method.

I've been a bunch of gesture studies and I can't grasp the stylization anymore.

Also, I can't find for fucks sake any info about the pelvis besides the bone. I really want to know how shit works between the legs, but I might have to resort to porn.
>>
>>2963141
Uncanny valley effect is almost definitely caused by the fact that you just mirrored one side of her face; something that is never seen in real life.

Her nipples are crooked dude. And way too high even for tiny nips. Please look at a picture of real tits.

You have a good iea of where shadows go and shit but your blending is so patchy and not in a stylized way.

You don't know how asses in dresses work. Even in a skintight dress you won't see the top "v" part of the ass crack. The rest looks fine.

As for the page itsself, I was confused by the second panel because it doesn't look anything like she's suddenly catching sight of dat ass.

I 'm not great at comics though so I'm not positive how you could fix it since my solution would be to add slightly more panels, drag out her line of sight changing, or since it's animu anyway just do a dashed-line line of sight leading that way so you get the idea before the panel of just ass.

Also now that i'm looking at this more: Dude, you don't see ABS through a dress either no matter how skintight, that's just not how that kind of material works.

Look up some thots in tiny dresses you'll see tons of references there.

>>your digital inks are fucking garbage

Ignore this faggot I think they look good. Not WOW AMAZING but they're nowhere near close to garbage.

Just needs more finesse, and for traditional inks I think they look good since traditional ink is unforgiving as fuck (inktober every year makes me hate trying lol. I'll stick to my undo button.)
>>
>>2964732
Move her left you shouldn't have two things touching the same side of the boarder in a piece like this.

I personally think you'd be better off expanding and just drawing the rest of her legs desu.

Background is boring though so I hope you really take advantage of that window and the possibly light it'll provide.
>>
>>2964943
I don't know why my quoting got so fucked up looking like that. Hope you guys know what i meant to do there.

trying to figure out how to blend better
thanks anyway
>>
>>2964967
Start with a hard brush to lay down the color, then go softer and softer until you're basically using an airbrush. By the time you get to th airbrush stage you should be hardly able to see the changes happening.

Starting too soft usually leads to the unblendable blotchiness.

Idk if I'm good enough to start doing smut comics, opinions?
>>
>>2964978
I think you're good enough. There's still stuff you need to improve on (like those hands on the bottom left) but I think you're good enough to start. You'll probably get better as you go on so might as well start now.
>>
>>2964978
I think you're good enough to start but if you're not feeling confident, work on some cover art as extra practice.

Work on the mouths and hands though. You have to find that balance between anime and semi-realism depending on the scene or you'll just have a boner killer.

Like the one with the tongue? It looks like a mini t-bone steak is slapped on her chin.

It's just intended exaggeration to make things more appealing. But I guess you're gonna say all the pro that does it are retards that have no idea what they're doing?
>>
>>2965043
>>2965051
And chainmail bikini isn't the same, it obviously does is stupid when used seriously like some proper armor. But series/games that uses them have usually the magic resistance excuse anyway.
>>
>>2965053
>it obviously does is stupid

Look guys can we not argue about my opinion being wrong here and not derail the thread? In my opinion, as someone who's a consumer as well as an animator, thinks it looks retarded on an anime-styled character unless it's hyper rendered, which this is not.

Can we at least agree that I can accept it as some sort of "classic trope" and leave it at that? This is a retarded thing to argue about.
>>
>>2964941
getting too realistic is boring man. If he wants to show the abs then let him do that, it looks appealing at the very least.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you, i swear i made a post but i guess it got ate or i forgot to actually hit the post button or something else stupid on my end lol

hairline and the neck placement were the big two that i noticed

you've given her a bit of receding hairline at the temple and while folks like robbie rotten, phil collins, jack black and vinny caravella pull it off with flying colors, most young women won't have that kinda hairline. i did some quick kinda shitty little top down projections to show how i visualized the hairline you drew originally would look from above as well as a quick estimation of where her hairline should probably be while still preserving her slight widow's peak on the right side of the image

remember that the neck and the spine are one in the same. they're a bit misaligned in your original drawing. went and drew a quick estimation of her ribcage's form so i wouldn't be distracted by her bobbies and then followed that to get a better idea of where the neck would emerge from the back, then went and redid the traps and clavicle etc, that part's p self explanatory

just gotta remember to think in 3d
>>2962706
i did a quick lil thumbnail, i put it in the bottom right of the image i posted at about the resolution it was drawn. tried to push the perspective more as i started working on the buff dudes, realizing they felt a bit blah but yeah, overall i do need to work on putting more energy into my porn drawings. am curious as to know in more detail what feels awkward about the posing tho, i've been staring at that image for so long my brain's still kinda fried haha

i am definitely trying to work more of the flow that more toony artists i like have in their work, people like budu-nsfw, amiamid etc

>>2964004
nope, i kno of merri tho, gotta whiles to reach her level hahaha.
>>
>>2965214
Thx, friend. I'll try to make those changes.
Btw, do you have a blog?
>>
>>2963247
I had a mate who is intermediate in Japanese try to translate some of these and he said that apparently this is his way of "checking" if the figure is right or something. so he just goes straight ahead and draws the figure, and THEN does the ribbons/bondage around the characters

Sometimes I just want to draw characters and sometimes I just want to draw backgrounds so I use manga studio assets to add a quick background or character

I don't like to upload characters without a backgrounds

>>2965286
At least make the lighting in the background make sense with the character mang, the pic provided is blaring bright in comparison to that night setting. Else it looks jarring af. I'm shit with backgrounds to though, still trying to figure out what to do for this one

>>2965321

I wanted the character to be brighter to highlight it but maybe that was a bad visual choice.

Maybe the perspective of the box doesn't go along with the perspective of the sky, but I'm not sure
>>
>>2965318
Awww that's cute as heck, anon. Doesn't look a fucking thing like a sheep though but furries get away with a lot so whatever. My goarsona from high school doesn't look much like a goat ha.

I love the lighting and I think lineless coloring suits your style a lot.
>>2965349
Not that anon but i agree. It's basic as heck. You could find this on anyone's DA

>thin flat lineart
>flatass coloring
>flat face
>rum comes in a cask usually and that box looks like a shitty cardboard box
>wheres her other foot anon?
>What's the box standing on, anon, air?

Plan out your background WITH the figure in your sketching phase because the method you're using now is garbage.

Stop using assets to add quick backgrounds, learn to make them from the ground up like your characters. There are no shortcuts. There is no secret ingredient.
Bonus round
>The grammar on the dialogue sucks
>Why the fuck are the word bubbles boxes?
>Why are they SO FUCKING FAR away from the character?
Either imply it in the description when you post it or commit to making it look like a comic panel.

>also implying rape is going to happen

Stop being a lazy cunt and expecting results.
>>
>>2965355
lol goarsona. Goatsona. Goat.
>>
>>2965349
I guess you traced the pose looking at how everything else is so low quality and screams beginner.
>>
>>2965372
I'm assuming you mean proportions because that pose is god fucking awful.
>>
>>2965373
Both. The overall pose is pretty solid, like the left hand resting on the leg, and same for the proportions. It's at a way higher level than the rest.
>>
>>2965355

Oh I understand the issues with the background now, I just planned to draw the character without any background just a cube to complement the pose. Now that I think about it it would be easier to plan and draw the character and background from the beggining

>

But I like the look of thin line art

>>2965372

Nope
>>

Some initial character sketches for a project idea, need to model the big guy after I do some design revisions. He and the red one are the main two.
>>
>>2965411
im really not sure what the red one is trying to convey. i think the big guy and the blue one would make for better partners
>>
>>2965411
imo the yellow and red are too similar. you usually want some some change in dynamics between the main characters.
>>
>>2965413
>>2965416
Much thanks for your input guys, I'll take this into consideration. Red guy needs a lot of work as he was the very first and the yellow was the most recent so I'll need to do some work seeing how I can make them mesh together a little better as a duo personality/design wise.

Appeal is a hard thing to nail down.

Thank you for the feedback anon, I admit I'm not too fond of the green guy myself, just throwing out the ideas and will experiment further with design work. I can see the likeness now right down to the stripes (completely unintentional) so I'll do some work on him, too.

>>
>>2965383
Do you have your sketch anon?

Look, it undeniably looks like shit, you need to face that your skill level is still beginner regardless of if you traced, eyeballed or freehand the drawing.

The lineart looks like shit.

>>2965395
Kill yourself pedo

>>2965409
"Welcome home, master" lol

I love what you did with the background. It's super simple and doesn't detract from the character without looking like garbage in the meantime.

The figure needs more time and love though, and I like this picture so I hope you'll take another crack at it. Some deeper shadows on the figure, and some brighter highlights to make that back lighting shine.

Don't give up on it yet, anon, this has a lot of potential for a piece.

Also if you don't know what she should say consider leaving out the speech bubble entirely
>>
>>2965454
If she's not leaning on the wall the girl on the right would definitely fall over if she were real standing like that. The weight she's leaning on for the rest of the pic doesn't match the right leg which is giving it that feeling to me.

I think they're cute otherwise.
