If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

What do you do if you can't find a pose you're looking for, nor do you have anyone to pose for you? I don't have a camera, or the physique for the pose I want, nor am I talented enough to draw it from my imagination.

I need a shirtless, muscular dude with his arms tied above his head. Only pics I can find of people with their arms tied up like that are women, and I don't know how to translate the chest area well enough.

So is the whole "learning from photos is bad" meme true? Or is it just an oversimplification of a larger discussion?

I like the look of her! I love merms so I ended up doing something similar. Mine is based on a freshwater electric eel while yours is more of a mythical sea one. For some tips on creating an environment for a character; it focuses a lot on the conceptual stage of work. While you are thinking up your character: think about where they are and what they are doing. For example, yours is a sea one, so you could include coral/ rocks ect. If its open sea, more color variation, and rays of light from the surface could help too. also adding particles in the water helps give a better feeling of the ocean.

Another thing to note is
>>2947684
is right. And, it's also the answer to your response
>>2947688
In helping build a better, more 3-dimensional character. A different pose would suit the character more, and add depth and dimension. strong construction ensures depth, while color and lighting enhance it. Try to think of your beginning sketch in more of a 3-D way, and box things in to make sure you move past flatness.

That being said, I would do a redline but I am not confident enough because I am a beginner myself. Best of luck!

>>

Drawing is something you improve over time.
if you were 10 years old and drew shitty pictures and then decide that you won't ever get into arts because your drawings are shit, you should just fucking kys

You commit into doing it and you keep doing it until you're good. Just because you're shit now doesn't mean you can't improve any further.
Shut the fuck up, get a tablet and start drawing 5-10 hours every day. Come back after few years to thank me.

I like the comic book aesthetic having it on paper's given it
>>
>>2947967
You don't need to use so Many lines to get that tough, gritty look. Instead, use textures and a very quick and sharp strokes.

Also consider using dark, sharp shadows as well to add to that gritty atmosphere.

The rib cage looks (a bit) like it was drawn to short and wide but thats just me.

For a good example of a gritty style, please google Yoji Shinkawa art. His work is very textured but if you look closely, you'll see that it's painted very loosely with a range od sharp abstract shapes and subtle shading here and there.

How can I get the proportions right when starting from a gesture? I always get the head too big like in pic related. My aim isn't to match the reference 1:1 but I want to at least get the proportions right.

Like in pic related, the head is way too wide. I tried to make the images the same size as possible but they're not exactly the same size. But in the photo the side of her head to the end of the shoulder is about 1 head width, in my drawing it's only 3/5th. But if I widen the arm then the arm just looks way too fat.

>Or is it just an oversimplification of a larger discussion?

It's oversimplified because it's not bad, it's just not ideal. From life you have an entire scene in front of you -- that is, you can see the shape of the person's face in three dimensions, even if they don't move much. You can't look at a photo and then symbol-draw the shadows to create form (not quite symbol-draw, but you know what I mean -- drawing the shadows based on their shape in the photo rather than figuring out the form and applying them based on what you see.) You learn quicker from real life.

nah it's the same as the "blog?!" meme. Your drawing's Not absolutely beginner tier but still beginner nonetheless. Chicken scratching everywhere (unless youre on paint) and improvising anatomy; that's not good. It's a problem im trying to fix also.
>>
So /ic/ and places like DrawABox all tell me to draw quick, but smooth and precise lines. But when I see, say, Proko, drawing from life, they always do a series of strokes that make up a larger line.
>>
is it possible to grind something so much that you actually get worse at it?

A little focus on construction will go a long way, frienderino. Also you can try tracing the image just so you understand the size of the head relative to the body (and other proportions). Then scrap the tracing and try drawing again

>>2948012
If you can draw loomis or whatever artstyle you will be able to draw as good or better than Jérémie Périn. You will be drawing from photos and life to achieve both, as you need a grasp of anatomy in order to simplify it aesthetically.

>>2948096
Stop looking at your drawing for so long while you draw it. You're drawing most of your image from memory, and your memory simplifies what it sees. Look back and forth between your drawing and your reference every 2-4 seconds as you are drawing.

>>2948364
You need Loomis. It doesn't matter if your end product is low-res pixels, your anatomy really could use work. Particularly the legs.

>>2948377
Are you going for a cartoon style on the face?
The lips and eyes just look like flat symbol drawing to me.

Where might I find clear perspective exercises (especially in video form)? I can read PME as suggested in the sticky/wiki, but I want clearer exercises that define clearly the organized method of perspective. Though, admittedly, I have not read the whole book. Should I just continue reading to find the skills I'm looking for?

I understand concepts like the horizon line and eye level, HWD, and relative distance sizing, but applying the understanding of these concepts is where I feel I am lacking. For instance, I tried to draw a simple head with a downward angle, but it came out seemingly direct to eye level.

Her right shoulder is too narrow and she is anorexic. There's something that looks wrong about her face, but I don't draw faces well enough to give a definite answer. Let's just say it's very unattractive, and the visible arm is poorly done.
Chicken scratching isn't a good habit too, and you could really use some gestures.

Oh, btw, she totally looks underage (what's with that big head, small breasts, and thin body), so you might want to check your VPN if you're a poor Amurricunt.
>>
>>2949009
And this is why you don't listen to criticism on the Internet from randos.

Very thin, obviously drawn that way. Small breasts, also yes. Underage? Please stop giving criticism if you're just going to make things up.

>Visible arm is poorly done.

>>
>>2949016
Not sure if trolling, but okay, let's elaborate it on the arm.
Go up to the mirror topless, make the same pose and note how your arm is shaped. If you're not a skinny weakling, make some adjustments but define the bones and muscles.

"Obviously drawn that way," you say? She's so thin that I find it very hard to believe she has any internal space for organs, and giving birth would likely kill her. I say it again, she is clearly underdeveloped.

I'm trying to improve my linework digitally as I feel like Michael J Fox whenever I attempt it. I saw this video today and I thought the linework was pretty kickass.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1MhaTipED8
I copied the settings they used for the pen when lining the mermaid but I don't really know what canvas size he's using. I tried copying the image into sai (pic related) to try and trace over it to see if my lines are along the same line, Pun not intended, but mine are much smaller. I'm confused. I'm not even sure if pic related was the size it was drawn in.
>>
>>2949291
>loose strokes

well, how else am I going to finish a portrait in 10 minutes or less? Should I just not post them?
>>
I still have no idea how to do lines.
Here's my problem: I don't know how to move my arm while drawing at all. Using my wrist feels way more controlled and comfortable, but leads to sketchy chickenscratch. If I use my shoulder like many guides say you should, I don't feel in control of my lines at all. It feels really uncomfortable nerve wracking to use my shoulder except for the biggest of lines, and I mean big.
What arm movements do I use when and why?
>>
>>2949305
Chill, man. Tis' a question of likeness. It doesn't matter whether your lines are as loose as a 50 years old slut. If you want people to recognize the nationality of the portrayed being, hone your technique and put lines down wisely.

>>2949307
Wrist for details, arm for big lines. Try holding the pen between your ring finger, pinky, and thumb when you draw from your arm.
>>
>>2949332

Not upset, no worries. But I am curious what you mean. Loose but wise? Doesn't loose imply that the lines aren't wise? And if so, why doesn't it matter?

I assume you mean loose in another sense than correctness?

I think the intended meaning in the last post is something like "rough and free (unbound by anything)." It is possible to draw a good looking picture roughly, just like it's possible to construct everything perfectly but fail to make it look good and interesting.

However, you seemingly lack skill necessary for drawing good looking rough pictures yet. Your lines are "loose" in the "sloppy" sense. And yes, you can master it by continuing to do what you do now, but you have to draw other subjects than yourself as well.
>>
>>2949347
Try going slowly and don't be afraid to restate your lines. There is a BIG difference between making several long confident strokes and making one stroke made of several tiny less confident ones (chicken scratch)
>>
>>2949357
>but you have to draw other subjects than yourself as well.

Thanks for the advice! It's actually the first self-portrait I've ever done because I have bad bdd, though. I like drawing faces a lot, however. Perhaps I should draw something else today.

Quite deliciously, but you still need to work on your anatomy and foreshortening. The arm of the girl in the lower right corner looks wrong: the shoulder (dislocated) and the upper arm (the inner outline is too straight) are poorly executed, and the arm itself is too long (longer than the other).

>>2949421

Other than that, I wouldn't say any of those look bad (at least without comparing them to the references). If you feel like you're stagnating, that's probably because you only do studies and don't draw from imagination, maybe?
>>
>>2949431
Hm correct! I need to work on drawing from imagination a lot more than I currently am.

P.s Yes I'm the ugly British bong with the long hair

It would be nice to see some testimonies from people who started in their kid 20s and not since "I doodled a lot as a kid but only went serious as an adult!"

The face looks rather flat imo, good observation skills but newbie at construction

The right set has around a cup size of difference.
The left one has some minor differences in size, but is far better.

>>2949478
first you have to spend years grinding

Ohh, I'll give that a try. I thought that was just handled by "min size". What sort of messing around would you suggest?
>>
>>2949585
idk what kind of software do you use but in corel you can change the thickness/weight at the ends and starts of the lineart. or the pressure of the brush, etc.try it all mane, nothing to lose and some knowledge of your software to gain.

These are just practices for anatomy. I'm not drawing any faces, because my main goal is to draw, well furries.

>>2949645
So that justifies not learning how to wrap the features around the skull and expressions?

Furries have skulls too fleabag.

Thanks for your critique but let's not worry about the legal age of some digitaly drawn lines.

>>2949016
Please don't discourage people from offering critique without adding something constructive yourself, even if it was well intentioned, it's not helpfull.

Anyway I could use some crit on this picture.

I'm been practicing faces for a lot longer then I'v been drawing full bodies. I know it's stupid to separate them like that, but I don't think I have that hard of a time drawing faces, so I left them blank.
Again, I realize this isn't the best way. I'm just trying to explain my reasoning behind it.

>>2949664
Not that other Anon, but you should eventually move on to doing both at the same time so they flow and blend well together and it comes second nature to you.
I really like your art by the way, keep it up. I'll be looking forward to more.
>>
I just started drawing last week, I feel like all I do is copy stuff without adding anything myself. I tried Loomis fun with a pencil and even copying it doesn't come out right. Is this where symbol drawing is coming in? Is it simply just grinding to beat it out of my system?
>>
Can anyone give me some tips for constructing the body when it's facing the camera?

Like when you're looking at them from directly above, below or if they're lying down facing you?

I have issues constructing and taking foreshortening into account.

Skullgirls artstyle uses a somewhat watercolor coloring and the shading usually have an outer and inner layer to them. Your shading is pure flat shading. If you want an example, look at Filia's hand on the right (her left hand).
>>
>>2949738
I see, so there's a bit of blending to it that makes the transition less jarring?
>>
>>2949741
Yeah. It's a hard distinction yet the shading itself is very soft. If you look real closely (at a higher res pic perhaps) you can see that most of the coloring and shading isn't a single color.
It may look weird now because you only have flats at the moment.

Practising heads from imagination again.

How wonky do they look? Do they look 3D? How do I make sure I keep trying different angles? A lot of the heads I drew look very similar in orientation. Please redline if you can.

I've been practicing Abstract Watercolor/Acrylic for the last year, my work is minimalistic and inspired by the likes of Lee Ufan, I use my philosophy of art degree to write short abstract poetic essays about each piece, my Insta has been slowly gaining followers and I've just started a blog to drip feed the essays and get an online portfolio going

Does anyone here work in a similar art style that could give critique? it would be greatly greatly appreciated
