TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hey guys - we all have those days. Don't forget what uncle Bob said :Everyday is a good day when you paint! https://youtu.be/YLO7tCdBVrA

Relax, stretch, go get a drink. Sit down and do something simple, draw a box, a circle, doodle around. Relax your muscles , draw from the shoulder. Don't think about the outcome, don't think about showing this to anyone. This is your crazy little warm up.

Don't give up! Moments like this happen - but you need to learn to work trough them to build discipline! Start working on another drawing. Draw a bit in your comfort zone. Draw the animu girls. All of them!

And when you feel relaxed go back to learning.

Alternatively to all this go do some sport and try again after that - but ppl around here don't seem so motivated to move their lazy behinds.

After editing some parts so that it more accurately resembles the reference, the drawing at least looks like Taylor a bit now (though my scanner doesn't seem to notice the lightest shades). I've been wondering how to render the hair though, I feel like it will become a blurry mess if I just hold my pencil sideways to add shades.. any tips?

The first thing that pops out to me is the tilt of her head. It's tilted ever so slightly forward and I think your drawing has failed to capture that. That's why the distance between her eyes and lips is off, you're not envisioning her head at that forward angle. Also, that's not the whorl on the crown of her head you see in the reference, but you drew it like it is (or at least that's what it looks like).

Also the lips are too wide, in particular the bottom one. And the angles of the corner of her mouth taper off differently from how you've drawn them.

You also have the sides of her face coming inwards towards her forehead, which is not happening in the reference.

Hey guys. I did some drawing studies with "Keys to Drawing" and at one point Dodson suggested to copy a master piece.
Since I didn't like all the master pieces he suggested at all I decided to pick one myself.
I came up with pic related and although I have no experience at all with painting I decided to just give it a go since I really like the style.

So I just started to paint yesterday and spend some time with it and actually really enjoyed the process. Trying out new colors, figuring out how colors work etc.

This is what I have up till now.
I kinda like how it turned out but honestly I tried to copy the style in the original work.
Since I am a total noob at painting I don't know how I could fix my approach to look like the original.
Can someone help me on this one?
Ignore the hair and the clothing.

And while I'm at it: I can't figure out at all how to do the hair. Any advice?

Why does my painting look so fucking smooth?
How can I get it to look more like the original?
>>
>>2930283
don't use airbrushes, think about edges.
>>
>>2930286
but airbrushes look like the perfect tools for shading/values.
how else can I do the shading/values?
>>
>>2930291
With a rather normal brush and blending. Blending blending blending. But keep your forms logically coloured.

Besides that you didn't pick the right colours and you drew too many hard shadows. So I also recommend looking up some tutorials how shading works, how light bounces of objects, where a dark shadow is cast abd where reflected light illuminates certain spots.

If you are new to digital painting also look up some tutorials on blending.

I would proved some examples but I'm riding the bus and my means and data coverage are kinda limited.
>>
>>2930291
there is no other way to get VERY smooth values. air brush is the only way otherwise you would have to spend countless hours trying to render with hard brushes.

>>2930252
Thanks a lot! I often wonder why I just don't see those mistakes, is it just lack of training in observation? Anyway, I will see what I can do about those points.

>>2930255
That makes sense, I guess erasing the current lines (until they're only faintly visible) should help out in combination with that technique.
>>
Any advice on where to start with understanding properties of light/shading?
>>
>>2930303
blending in digital is not the same at all as blending in traditional. stop fucking telling nooblets to blend its too fucking vague. The brush systems for almost any software ou there is exactly the same. Some names things differently some have minor changes to them. The basics are still the same. you are either going to be painting with no pen pressure or pen pressure. Opacity or flow they both do completely different things. one changes the transparency the other does not. Thats the basic set up with that brush system. The other brush system that photoshop and others have are specifically designed for blending. The mixer brush and the blending brushes in sai/clip studio. those are difficult to master because you CANT use one layer to paint. sai and clip studios blending brushes are designed to work with alpha channels because of the dilution effect they have.

TLDR dont blend.

Thanks for the addition but " don't blend at all" also seems to be a broad statement. Do you have an example picture?
>>
>>2930321
i say dont blend because its a lot more complicated than people think. you need to keep it simple and wait until you earn enough experience bro fa m

and no where did i say to not blend at all. just dont blend specifically at noobs. dont blend.
>>
>>2930275
Dont use pure black for the shadows; this is a common mistake for beginners. Notice in the original piece that the shadows have a hint if red in it. This is true for virtually all colored pieces out there.
>>
>>2930320
Thanks, the skin one in particular was nice. More specifically I'm confused on how light from a primary and/or ambient source(s) will illuminate an object with complex textures. How does light behave on the surface of an object when it's hitting a windowpane or a twisted leaf, if I'm not using a reference how would I be able to discern which segments of hair would be highlighted and how can I create that effect using pencil and paper.

First, stop drawing in a coal mine.

Second, you should work on ONE thing at a time. Practice the dicks out of it, and then post your updates. That's the best way we can help you.

Third, when you concentrate everything into one image, it makes it really hard for people with smaller screens to look and see what's actually there. Try one or two at a time, bb.

I tried to avoid air brushes completely and did basically everything in watercolor brushes since many youtube speedpaints seem to use them.

Hey good job anon. That's much better. It looks like her now.

Perhaps the eyes aren't as fierce and the cheekbones don't have their shading yet. Her face is also slightly wider than how you drew it.

As for the hair, since it's wavy, look for the curved shapes. The light is usually on the top of the curves. So shade the ends of the curves and not the middle. Like for the bangs, you would shade the tips and the roots and leave the middle portion light.

Let's see...
Profile view on the bottom right sheet has no flaws at all. Like you meintioned, the front view has a cranium a bit too wide (but it has proper height), which makes him an alien, and the 3/4 guy's nose is too short. There are also some issues with his cranium and jaw.
The sheet above it, what I immediately notice is that your guy's neck is placed too far to the right (relative to him). Bring it closer to his left shoulder (which probably would make his shoulders too narrow) or make the right half of the torso wider.

Going to the left, I have no idea what those things resembling both USB cards and toilet seats are. 3/4 heads aren't horrid, but all of them have some errors. The top one's ear is too far back and his cranium seems disproportionally massive for the head's height. The right guy has good head outlines, but his face is meh. The final guy on this sheet is incomplete and his mouth is mislocated, otherwise I'd definitely say he's the best of those three.

The sheet at the upper left corner. The corner guy has the best neck of them all, but the back of his head isn't curved enough, meaning the cranium ends too far up. Others are screwed, but the guy with the torso seems ok... but there's something uncanny about him, not sure what.

Finally, if you want to draw torsos, you'd have to publish the result in a bigger scale or nobody would be able to tell anything.

I feel like your style is very messy and it masks a lot of the mistakes in your drawings. Also, the drawings being as tiny as they are, leaves plenty of room for smudging and guesswork, which again masks any possible mistakes you can see and correct.

It's hard to see any clear indication of forms, where you're getting the proportions and anatomy right or wrong, particularly with the faces.

You should try to draw large and neatly. Really clean up your edges so that you can zoom in to all aspects of your work.

Otherwise, the haziness of your style will just make it difficult for you continue refining the precision of your drawings.

Okay so not a bad attempt. The rendering is clean and the pose is looking okay. There are some issues with symbol drawing as well as missing shadows. But the biggest issue is that the figure looks extremely flat. It looks like you didn't think about the 3d form and just copied shade by shade.

Notice how the shading of the muscles don't show volume. They appear flat kindof like tattoos. They don't show the curvature, depth, or the plane changes of the surface of the skin. There is a lot of guessing with how you drew the shadows. It looks like you're unsure of what the shadows are for and where to place them.

Your 2d copying skills are getting there, so now it's time for you to move on to drawing in 3d with light/shadow and form studies.

>>
>>2930810
I see this posted all the time, and while I have used this method and can see how it works for the specific piece that you're working on, I don't see how it would help you with a picture that isn't flipped. Wouldn't you have to flip every single picture to achieve the same effect?
>>
>>2930805
I understand what you mean, especially with the shadows. You're correct in saying I don't necessarily know what they're for, I was just trying to copy them to the best of my ability. Once I get into anatomy I think I will begin to understand that a bit more.

This was an exercise in gesture (I had just watched proko's video on it) and I just ended up rolling with the whole thing as best I could. I'm currently working through Keys right now, and still have issues as to how faces (among other things) work.

You're also right about the "tattoo" effect, I had the same thoughts as I was making them.

Right now I'm disciplining myself into forming the habit of drawing everyday, and "not a bad attempt" is more than enough to keep me motivated, thank you for the advice anon

>>
>>2930810
the thing with that is they show suchj an exreme version of symbol drawing that i makes it seem that your drawing isnt as bad so you think its not symbol
>>
>>2930811
The point isn't just about flipping the image. It's about the message of learning to see and draw shapes as they appear rather than drawing symbols. It's not an effect to achieve. It's a skill that you have to learn to do on your own if you want to draw.

Like the image says, when drawing the face, you're not really drawing each individual feature the way your brain thinks. You're actually drawing shapes in gradations of light and dark values. The appearance of the face then is just an illusion created by the shapes.

The trick to drawing something well is to learn how to not depend on symbols and learn to see the underlying shapes and copying them. An easy demonstration of this idea is to flip the image. Once you get what it's showing you, then you should be able to do it on your own without flipping.

Analyze illuminated objects IRL. Find out where the darkest point, the light point, and the terminator are located, depending on the light sources and the object's shape. Find out how different kinds of light sources illuminate objects differently. It's kind of easy to learn convincing shading without any guides if you are analytical.

this is actually... not that bad. quite flat tho, try studying the planes of the face and also light etc. to give it more life. the difference between detailed portraits and flat portraits are usually to do with planes, kind of like polygons IRL. once you know this and have a definitive light source bob is your uncle

So I was doing some sketches and noticed just how bad the form/proportions are in them. The models to the right are the correct proportions for reference. Can anyone give me some advice on something I'm doing wrong and how to correct course? I've gotten used to using 3d posing models as a crutch but more often than not the poses come out stiff and lifeless, and thats a pretty shitty practice I've been trying to quite anyway.

Also, this is a pretty scaled down image from when I was drawing, I'm not a regular here but I vaguely remember a general rule about image sizes not being too big. If this is too big or too small let me know.

you may want to consider working from a more finished drawing, there are anatomical/perspective issues here. not too serious ones really, but at your level of experience it may be more productive to make sure those are correct early on so you can focus on the painting more easily. if you don't like to work like that, that's fine, but you'll have to practice more and be very critical of your own work, so as to develop your eye enough to 'guess right' as you paint. it's a much more long winded and exhausting way of learning how to art.

as to the painting, you have essentially the right idea, but are let down mainly in the values you are using, and the way you are using strokes, again these things will develop with time, but you should be working from life, still life mainly, and working very carefully and slllowwly, if (ironically) you want to improve quickly.

aside from these technical quibbles the image is engaging, the girl is cute, she seems alive and not doll-like or anything like that, and the lips are especially well rendered. keep it up.

zoom in and draw as focused as possible
if you got a proper line, then duplicate that line into a new layer, put it thrrough some gausian blur and erase a bit on the sides till it looks alright. if the line has become too dark because you duplicated it turn down the opacity on the original a bit. this is how i do it when i cant seem to draw lines that well, but i think it might be better to just practice more.

Hey, sorry if I whored her up too much but the main point I want to get to you is to watch the colours you're using, especially in her skin and horns. The shadows you have right now on her face are a bit too harsh and desaturated, making it look muddy, and you're applying warmer tones randomly on her face. When it comes to black hair, try subtly liven it up with cooler colours, this helps make the subjects skin look warmer in contrast and is a bit more interesting than jet black, which also should not be used on the face generally as eyebrows aren't completely opaque. As for the horns, I doubt I'm accurate but you should vary the colours much more, because right now it looks garish compared to her black hair, and also your strokes should try follow the form of the horn to give a better sense of its shape.

Yes it is symbol drawing, but your lines are nice and clean so you have a great start.

You are drawing each part, like, eye, other eye, mouth. What you need to do is draw the values and lines that make up those parts, without trying to draw what you think those parts are. You draw what you literally see. Your brain is playing a telephone game in the middle between your eyes and your hand, putting In it's ideas of what it thinks these parts should look like before your hand starts drawing. Your brain doesn't have preconceived notions of abstract lines and forms, so you draw those more accurately. By drawing all the parts correctly, it fits together like a nice puzzle.

The portrait looks bretty good. I assume you copied it from a reference? Like I said before, your copying skills are good, and that's why you need to apply them to your benefit. Draw the model, then try to copy your drawing, then try to modify the face to some extent, and so on.
I don't think there's anything to discuss about the stylized... uh... being that heavily reminds me of a certain Soviet cartoon, pic related.
As for the full body, well, humans don't have a neck that's as long as their head. The top of his head seems too flat too. His legs resemble walking pods or chicken feet, adding to the uncanny image. And men don't usually have such pronounced hips. It is women who have their hips protruding from the sides of their body.

I FINALLY finished Hampton's Design (pic) and Invention book, where he teaches the figure and some anatomy, and now I feel like I kinda understand the shape of the body, and I feel like I can do at around 30% of the body by myself.

Where do I go from here? I can clearly tell that I can keep improving, so can anyone recomend another curse but for not-absolute-begginers? I've heard Hogarth, Vilppu, Loomis etc. Or maybe should I just grind a bunch of bodies and get good from there? Please help, I'm lost.
>>
>>2932056
Now, you re-read the book and practice again. I'm 100% serious too.
>>
>>2932058
Really? How substantial would be the improvement if I re-read it? I mean I can see why it would be helpfull but I wonder if it really is better to read it again instead of moving to something else.
>>
>>2932056
Dude, I'm only a little way into the book. I read then I practice and then I reread.
>>
>>2931825
not sure if its sarcasm but im not good, i only started drawing like 3 months ago
thought the beginner thread was for critique and advice but all you people can do is attack others whatevs
>>
>>2932069
I can't see the future anon, but books are meant to be re-read countless times if you plan to internalize the information. If you aren't perfect now, you'll be closer the next time around.
>>
>>2932074
Fuck

I'll give it a shot, I do remember being pretty confused several times while reading it.

Primarily, your need to push your values; everything you have is too light. The measurements for the face's width, the nostrils, and the hand are also off enough to notice. I did a quick paintover for you.

you aren't ever going to be a good artist if you have something better to do than draw
forcing yourself to practice for 30 minutes every day doesnt cut it
>>
>>2932081
Wow thanks, you're drawing looks soo much better (Although the hand looks wrong haha). What do you recommend on pushing values? Because I normally dont draw black/white stuff, I have watched some videos where people do black and white and then throw a gradient map on it, do you mean that on how I should be pushing values?

Literally all my coloured drawings are suffering from values and I can't seem to do better even though I am practicing every single day.

And I noticed that some things looked off about the face, not about the hand though, been focused too much on the face the past 4hours~ and im absolutely beat, I won't edit anything now on this, it was a study anyway.
>>
I get the strong impression that careful neat lines are the only way here but the sticky recommends Keys wherein he says lots of line restating is aiight.
Which is it? Personally im such a beginner that my main goal right now is just to get used to drawing for a minimum amount of time every day. The clean line school is pretty overwhelming for me as a beginner and makes me not want to draw. Can I start messy and move on to clean when I'm comfortable or am I going down a bad path that wont get me anywhere?

I change art programs so often that it's stupid. I prefer Photoshop but i'm not always able to use it because I'm a lazy poorfag. Is there anything similar that I can convert Photoshop brushes to? I usually use Sai but I hear good things about CSP and Kirita

I couldn't leave the drawing alone so I kept working on the values. Think I finally got it.
Hopefully I can make better use of values when I am drawing without reference.
