If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

It is, but it looks that way in the reference, although I didn't really measure that part when I was drawing it so it could be off as well.
Why don't you post your skulls? I'd love to see them. I'm going to bed now, but I'll reply tomorrow when I get the chance.

This graphical user interface is really odd. I might be too arrogant to understand what operating system you're using, here. Could you tell us?

Never used Linux?
>>2928093
Oh! No I haven't; I had no idea what it looked like, but perhaps if it looks like this I'll start using it
>>2928097
Well, if you are serious, be sure to do some research, 'Linux' is kind of a global term for a lot of operating systems working on the same base to put it simply.
Anyway, it's not difficult to install or anything, look up Ubuntu or Linux Mint and see if you can manage, anyone just a little tech-savvy can manage.
how's this?

Literally sitting like a monkey in my bed in a hotelroom. I usually only / mostly draw digitally so just using pencils is really fucking weird to me.( Bye bye comfort zone) I noticed that I fucked up the face badly so I redrew it smaller. Though I'm on a shitty business trip I wanted to draw SOMETHING.
Always happy to receive feedback if you have any lying around.

Good stuff for a beginner.
>>2928104
Though at least not stiff you are missing many basic ideas how anatomy and a body works. I get it it's anime - still your character seems to consist mostly of rubber.
I'd suggest you find a few poses of models you find interesting and try to draw these. Pay close attention to the anatomy - how does an arm conect to the shoulder - if the models places her leg in a specific way how does the hip changes in regard to that? Or stand before a mirror and pose - recognize how the body works.
At this early beginner stage you should really work with references to train your eye and start to expand your mental posr gallery.
I hope this helpes. If you check put the FAQ/sticky there are some links with help regarding anatomy.
I'm lovin' the T Swift, OP.

It's because you draw without thinking "how can I get better?"
It's the same thing people with thousands of games under their belt bitch about. "I've played one million games of StarCraft and I'm still Gold."

That's because you're still symbol drawing.

Yes, insomnia is cured the moment you realize you have to wake up in an hour.
But you gotta push on, anon.
>>2928303
Can someone give me the slightest inkling on how to stop symbol drawing?
>>2928310
It's hard, anon.
You have to first understand objects in 3D space. How they turn; how they rotate up and down, etc.
Then you have to practice each and every body party individually and then collectively from every different angle.
You're definitely doing better than most people with a 12-year-old's level of drawing, which is seriously most people over 12 years old.
But you really need to focus more on learning mannequinization and proportions.
Draw some more still life and some more life.
>>2928047
And today's attempt.
>>2928277
could be worse
>>2928313
how terrifying
I've set hour targets for myself as goals each month.
April = 75 hours
May = 100 hours
June = 125 hours
July = 150 hours
This way, I'm more flexible with how much I practice each day, but I can still make sure I hit my target practice length by the end of the month.
250 hours a month is the dream. Not sure when I will be able to handle that, though.
>>2928312

so i'm here taking a break my perspective studies. i get it, but i'm on 2-point and it feels like a lot to take in. give me some direction, lads. how do i apply my learnings when i'm not looking at scary technical pics of complex grids?
>>2928533
You don't, the grids are for problem solving. If somthing looks right you dont bother, if somthing doesn't look right, you bust out the grid lines and start problem solving t'ill it look sright.
>>2928545
i might have worded that poorly. i meant how to practice for periods when i'm not studying from a book. what do i draw?
>>2928533
I think people who don't understand how to apply perspective don't watch enough movies or look at life as much as they should. Every shot in a movie typically has good composition. Life has all the general point perspectives that you could apply to.
>>2928549
Ah, yeah I misunderstood, you were fine.
Just draw what you want, literally anything. When you're not grinding do stuff for fun. Easier said than done I know, I personally go into a mild depression in that time between studies because I feel like I'm to incompetant to make anything worthwhile on my own, but nothing to it but to do it.

>>2928364

>>2928287
The hands are still too small and the neck as well. But generally you seem to grasp the idea of anatomy. Keep on going into that direction a bit longer and you'll see satisfying results soon. But really train yourself to look closely at what you are drawing. Like look - look back to your paper and think about what you would dtaw next - look again - then draw. It's tedious but eventually your eyes will be trained enough to see what's really there.
>>2928284
Can't redline right now but: You generally drew all the features okay - but in the wrong spots. Measure from the inner corner if the eye to the outer bottom nose on the reference and your drawing. How does the nose align with the ear? What relstion does the mouth corner has to the eyes? Really look closely at those relations and you'll see most mistakes yourself.

Already replied to you in the thread you made. Great that you found this place hope others can also give you advice!
>>2928509
This is learning material - you are doing exercises - that's great! Keep on with these - anatomy and forms. The heads are far too big and half of the hand is not in perspective - just keep on with the exercises.
>>2928549
Why did you start drawing? This is the time to draw these things!
>>2928613
You really need to : Look at a skeleton. Look at naked people. Look at yourself - move and pose in front of a mirror. Just try to imitate the pose you drew and look carefully how your arm moves - your hip tilts. How big is your head compared to your shoulders? How long are your legs?
Then draw from reference. And draw slowly. You should see a major difference in outcome immediately.
Then you go to the stick/FAQ download the Loomis book, or buy Michael Hampton book or watever artist you like and start to read up on anatomy. You can also watch Villpu videos on youtube.
I hope this helps - creep on lil furry - creep on.
What do you think? I'm very proud of it.

thanks, I get what you mean about the arm positioning and the hips needing to be tilted. As for the head thing, I started the drawing from the head because it was just going to be a bust, but then I tacked on a body, so that clearly worked out well. thanks again for the advice though

Figure/gesture drawing is a hard one for me too broski, despite the fact I've actually done a class partially on it. Time to shell out some shekels for another I suppose.
I'm back and I'm going to post this now so that I can get to drawing something else that wasn't deliberate. There's a composition I really want to make in spite of my skill level, and I feel I'll be sorry if I don't do it soon. I also need to work on my website; it's looking pretty terrible
Just a cast drawing.
>>2928818
Even Loomis didn't draw the full lips. If you are pnly drawing linework it's not necessary to draw everything - just give an idea how ot bends and changes in relation to the most.
Don't forget: stretched mouth =thin lips! Screaming, yawning, smiling a bright broad smile = small lips. Upper lip is generally smaller than the upper lip - man have thiner lips than woman.

You drew whatou soon - you are fighting the symbolism - you didn't win yet but you are fighting.

Yeah, I'm just getting started, even though I am drawing seriously since a year now. That's why I just do line drawings. I want to get rid of these weird disproportions before I attempt value. Well, you've already got an exhaustive reply, so no beginner dailycrit for you. :P And you SHOULD give in to your artistical whims if you want to ever make it without losing interest partway. Just remember to study as well.
I, for one, feel like I'm already getting tired because I worry about my crappy drawing skills too much and spend an unforgivable fucking lot of time meditating over drawing perfect lines that I will ultimately cover with paint anyway. In the end I continue to fail the deadlines I set myself and end up more frustrated. I need to find some way to make this stage faster and less frustrating. Maybe I should simply paint my qt animoo girls like I paint background, without any preparation. Maybe I should try a different approach to lineart and draw simpler things with a faux pencil brush. Maybe I should just try everything and see what strikes a chord within me.
>>2928880
The only improvement I see here is in linework. Other than that, the second version lost some appeal. And don't draw square-ish eyes, they're a bad design choice, as some might still remember. Your rendering and colors... well, not that bad for a complete beginner, but there is certainly a lot to improve.

you drew darker edges on the side of the four prongs, but not on the actual handle of the fork. the head of the fork has depth but not the rest of it. I understand that the handle sort of bevels out, but it looks way too flat right now
also the cast shadow on the mid section of the fork should be more outward, because its higher off the ground.
think about which parts of the fork are touching the ground and which are highest off the ground.
otherwise, this looks really cool, never heard of people practicing their silverware paintings
>>2928998
Are you that same guy who painted a cool background of a snowy mountain road?
Well, you can make the edge of this FORK's handle more defined (use a darker color) where it's closer to the viewer. And the perspective looks weird somehow. It's like the fork is bent sideways half way to its neck. I'm not sure a natural vertical bend looks like that.

You start to get the idea, but you need to pay more attention to the skeleton and the landmarks. Go back to the landmarks chapter.Your anatomy is all over the place.
>>2929080
Your measurements are wrong. Ears too small - moth too small. The mouth corners end in the middle of the eye ( so to speak) Nose Eye and ears have a heavy relation to each other.
Go back to the chapter where those things are explained.
>>2929093
I told you to look at your previous picture and see how your doing dark and light tones there. In your new drawing you fucked up lighting, making it a weird drawing
>>2929090
Haven't made it so far in. In fact, it's the next chapter. Is it better to read it all at once, or read and draw chapter by chapter?
hair is impossible to draw
why couldn't we all just be born bald
>>2928020
>>2929133
It's possible... it's just that it's thousand times easier to make it stylized or make it look bad, and it's nigh impossible to draw realistic hair properly without a custom brush. And I speak from experience.
>>2929139
Pay more attention to his chin and his right eyebrow. Render looks pretty good, but values still require some work.
>>2929133
Wait. Most of us ARE born bald, aren't we?
>>2929126
I'd say read it all at once - just get a general idea how the book works. Then start working woth the chapters.
I often pick it up nowadays when I spontaniously forget how a knee works. I still really like the book.
>>2929139
Looks okay bit he's tilting his head while your face goes further straight down making his chin area run away. It's digital mirror it and you'll see what I mean. Try to plan your painting better and where you need to place the landmarks of the face in relation to each other.
I was thinking, how do you you render a picture that has very bright lighting with almost no shadows?
>>2929158
Make the shadows very light almost invisible.
If it's not a direct light source but a bright environment all around then treat the shadows like ambient occlusion (look it up if you don't know) Basically shadows form at edges, just make them light and sparse
Is it possible do draw detailed perspective freehand? Should I stop using the ruler and get used to doing it freehand?
>>2929166
A million times yes
>>2928711
Love it anon
>>2929158
AFAIK, contrast and hardness of the shadows increases with the brightness of the light source. So a picture with a brightest light source will be either black and white or grayscale (to show how much the intensity of light blinds the viewer).
>>2929166
If you mean "correctly and convincingly at all times", then no, it is not possible (if you want to draw something that consists of straight lines). However, it is strongly recommended to try to git bitter with it freehand.
>>2929039
Should I try setting up composition vertically and then rotate it down?
>>2929179
>not possible
not gonna make it
>>2929183
No, it's definitely a bad idea since you're drawing a 2d picture, not making a 3d model.
And it doesn't matter which way I distorted the picture to get something close to a direct view from above. I could just as well distort it horizontally. If you make a perspective grid, you don't even need to distort the picture, and you'd get much more accurate guidelines. However, it's nigh impossible to construct a correct grid when all shapes present on the picture are curvy and irregular. Since I didn't see the original fork, I can only guess. Let's try to rotate or distort it a little to see if it looks better.
P. S. After looking at one of my own, I think that yours has teeth of different length.
Question: should I be constructing faces when all I'm doing is drawing from pictures? I see some artists who are able to freehand a resemblance entirely on their own.
Is construction only for making a face without a reference?
>>2929313
I prefer constracting them - teaches you more and most ppl eventually want to draw without refs I assume.
>>2928334
If you want to make stuff that is not abstract art, no.
>>2929315
Alright. If you don't mind, a second question; when I look at Proko's videos on constructing heads, he's always very precise as to where the eyes and such are located. But human heads don't work like that; they aren't rigid.
How am I suppose to adjust my construction from person to person, or do I just not do it?
crit please
>>2929205
Point taken.
I swear I feel like you're one of two guys keeping these threads alive.
>>2929320
Generally: Mark the generals. And then start to look carefully and measure: This person's nose is a good bit shorter/longer than the ideal one. So I change it according to that. That Person has a suprising small mouth. Oh in relation the nose is really narrow - need to keep that in mind. So the eyes might be closer to each other. Yes they are! ...
Etc.... it's good to have a basis and then change things according to the actual person you are drawing.
On a personal note: Besides I've been drawing too tough I'm stuck in a shitty hotel. Also always happy to be critiqued. I didn't use refs on purpose since I still trying to construct ppl out of forms and all... potrait was mostly value training.
>>2929333
i know its style but no-ones mouth is that big or nose that small
also nice trips but check these
>>2929333
Nose and ear are really freaking small. The nose could be style but the ear is just too much. Also makes the cheeks really thin and small.
Additionally nose and eyes should be shaped be the immense grin. The mouth muscles push the other up/to the side leading to bigger nostrils and smaller eyes.
Immitate this face in the mirror and see how your face changes depending on the grimace you are making.
>>2929364
Thank you very much. It's nice to get some actual advice on /ic/
>>2929340
Thanks, heh. I simply enjoy trying to help others when I can, and these threads are just another source of this drug.
Whom you consider to be the other though? OP?
are you a bad enough to to try and draw this?
>>2929376
https://youtu.be/hakaoQ9L1RM
This is just a short snipped of the actual lesson - but I think it really gets my point across how knowing the basics will help you with irregular faces.
No problem glad I could help!
Finished, my paintings always end up looking flat, and i want to develop a more advanced shading style.
>>2929402
the cats head isnt 3d, draw an oval for it or something.
the guitar is too big for the perspective. he isnt pointing at anything. set the mood with the body language, that cat isnt turned away enough
>>2929391
I forgot my eraser and my ruler... stuck in my stupid hotel room... so I know I fucked up the lil brick walls bit I can't erase it.
Now you draw it...
>>2929419
>run out of paper
>draw on the walls of the building you're staying in
>go to sleep
>wake up next day to see "needs more loomis" written below your work
>>2929402
Nothing in this room is in the right perspective. So everything looks flat and lacks volume. I wouldn't think so much about shading and such right now. You need to concentrate on learning and understanding perspective. How does a cube an oval or any other shape change depending on it's position in a room.
I'd say check out the first 8 lessons of drawabox.com and try again. Or find other tutorials on form and perspective. You can also check out /ic/s sticky or FAQ for more tutorials and learning materials.
>>2929426
Haha... I mean I do have my copics with me... but I guess my boss will be pretty pissed when I start to vandalize the hotel room like a renaissance masterclass rockstar.
Man now I want an /ic/ shirt collection with stupid /ic/ memes - Needs more Loomis - read the sticky - everyone can pretend to be a woman and sell hardcore furry porn ( that's great for a t-shirt, really catchy)
>>2929428
Thanks, I will definitely check that out.
>>2928924
None of these are true.
I mean, just flat out none of them.
>>2928924
why are you so fragile?
couple gestures I did. I'm getting better at doing full body copies of images in the threads, but I've rarely drawn from life, and I think this is a better way to gain the confidence to do that
Need a redline
No idea wtf I'm doing anymore
>>2929619
I see what you're doing.
>>2929619
werent you working on this like 6 months ago?
>>2928893
You can't be a professional if you don't act like one.
I see you want to create awesome images, BUT, you don't want to put in any of the time learning how to get there. You want to just grab a pen or whatever and just watch it squirt out. You don't want to fill notebooks with pictures of body parts, don't want to draw circles, or shade in wine glasses or draw beer barrels or practice blending shades of brown you have no interest in. You just want to do your final product and ONLY your final product.
I do to. Thing is, I will probably succeed where you will fail.
Because I know that you have to improve to be professional, and you don't. So whatever. Have fun jumping straight into masterpieces and then quitting once you paint the sketch and leave the backgrounds blank.
Unless you can afford PS6 and a Cintiq, you're gonna have to, work for it.
>tfw only one eye so can't see perspective
guess I should just give up
>>2929402
Shouldn't you just work on the basics of drawing before you begin working on painting?
The other anons haven't said it because they're liberals trying to be "supportive" but your drawing is absolutely shit.
It's not your "style." You just suck. Instead of painting your shit to completion, you should learn fundamentals and make good drawings first.
Like other anons have told you repeatedly, your shit is out of perspective and your proportions are way off. This is a lack of fundamentals. Get your shit together, anon.
>>2929619
Is this a meme? Why do I have this feeling of familiarity with this?
>>2929640
A guy I worked with lost an eye in Iraq. It was hilarious watching him try to do simple things like throw darts.
He can draw better than I can.
>>2929640
if you couldn't see perspective, that means you see the world as flat and might as well be blind.
>>2928102
Other nix user here:
What do you use to manage your wacom/tablet settings?
So far I've made due with xsetwacom but I see bunches of people talking about having a gui and stuff in the system input settings.
I'm on lubuntu with a cth-470, I think either my tablet doesn't isn't supported by the gui (too old?) or something is missing/wrong in the environment.
>>2929640
? If anything, having one eye would make you way better at seeing perspective.
Most guys on /ic/ are leagues ahead of me, but that's mainly my fault for neglecting to learn the fundamentals for 10 YEARS!
I wish someone told me to actually pick up and art book to help me improve more. instead of doing basic doodles for years!
>>2929641
What fundementals exactly do I need to study? Ive read all the Andrew Loomis books more than once, Ive bought most of the books you guys tell me to read and read them, done their practices. Tell me exactly what I need to do.
>>2929675
pretty cute
Is it worth it? Should I throw away even more money and go for something with a built-in screen?
>>2929683
Thank you, but i really need to practice more to make more than JUST cute stuff.
Anyone can draw cute...
>tfw no gf
>>2929690

Takehiko Inoue is also amazing. Imo better.
Dunno if you've seen his work.

The further part of the jaw on the bottom left skull has no depth though.

>>2928015
Thoughts?
>>2929711
So much space between the base of the nose/mouth/chin and skull.
>>2929704
memes aside.
Is hard to tell what do should, the anatomy seems too stylized, and cant say anything about the rendering while imcomplete.
If thats supposed to turn me on, I would say you should study dynamism fampai, its also very dry and nothing going on.
>>2929719
Yeah I was trying to copy this picture from a anatomy book, I don't know if I did it right so far
>>2929727
Pretty good anon, but check the angle of the chin and jawbone. Also the cheekbones and eye sockets need a little work.
Also the proportions with the back of the skull. Measure it and measure yours. Document the ratios. Then fix it and post it again.
>>2929730
Thanks! I'll make sure to fixes my mistakes and updates soon!

happens to me all the time anon. after breaks, you should just ease yourself into it. draw something for fun, just doodle at first before going back to the lessons.
make sure you at least give yourself an hour. an hour at least is better than nothing.
>>2929867
That's the most bullshit post I've ever seen of the twitch's creative stream.
hi beginner thread
what do you prefer to use for posting your artwork online? instagram, deviantart, tumblr?
just curious. i only have experience with instagram
>>2929890
tumblr because I like to blog about my progress and shiet.
>>2929892
What's your tumblr?
>>2929895
it's merged with my personal blog so I'm not gonna post it. but when i get better i'll make an art only blog and link it here
i will make anime real so we won't have to draw anymore
>>2929902
You said that months ago, I'm still waiting.
>>2929892
are you able to get a decent following?
>>2929909
Not really for art, since I don't tag my drawings. They still get found once in a while though.
There do seem to be a lot of good artists who use tumblr basically as their main website.
>>2929929
Who would you consider good artists that use tumblr?
>>2929931
dave rapoza has one, and that guy who worked on gw2.
need to get better at my painting and rendering here's a study.
I know i dun goofed on the hands and didn't quite capture the face or the angle right but what do you see?
>>2929867
A small population of the people under 5 viewers are the only ones with some sort of self-awareness about getting good and have somewhat valuable streams. It's nice to chat with some of them once in a while. Honestly they're the only ones who deserve viewers and not these bullshitters who do fuck all. But then again the "real" artists would be on picarto or something.
>>2929949
Painting and rendering is the least of your concerns right now. Read the sticky, do some dodson or vilppu or even loomis.
>>2929949
Almost every single measurement is off somehow. Angle of the hip down to the ass, distance between bottom of shirt to top of panties and most notably the negative space formed between the inside of her arm and her back. And that isn't even the half of it.
I understand this is "painting" practice (and practice is good) but it's all symbol drawn. Without a good underlying sketch (at this stage in your art life. your process may change in the future when you get better) the painting will never be good. I recommend you read Keys to Drawing (or right side if you're into that) or at the very least watch/read something regarding accuracy and focus on getting measurements right before polishing a turd.
>>2929949
Honestly, you still need to work on accuracy and getting rid of your symbol drawing before you bother painting and rendering. There's not really much point in studying those if you aren't accurately drawing what you're seeing.
>>2929863
Is that a dick
What do I draw, alongside all the stuff the courses are telling me, to keep me interested in art?
How do I not get depressed when it doesn't come out as good as I want it to?
>>2929960
1- I usually draw stuff I'm into.
Like, "Oh, I'm interested in warframe again, I'll visit the warframe general and draw stuff there" or "Oh I want to make someone happy today, I'll go to /trash/ and draw someone /oc/ or content related to whatever general", etc.
2-Dont be a fgt. Masturbate, do wathever, go back to draw after a while.
In attempt to try and make a drawing or do some sort of writing every day, I end up just doodling and playing around with the doodle in various ways. I don't think I'm actually learning anything, but I can't help feeling like there's something there. Am I just fooling myself? Am I seeing something that's not there?
I went ahead and bought a book on perspective to get myself started, but it just feels like things I've gone over before. Maybe trudging through the boring stuff is just something I need to push through? I'd like to try and find a way to have more loose fun with it like I do my doodles. I can do that, right?
>>2929965
Feng zhu said that first you gotta earn that fun and desire to draw. Doodling for some time doing jack shit but enjoying creating stuff is part of the process.
When you feel ready or that you want to create something really bad, then go for it.
PS: studying is not fun but necessary. Remember that later.
>>2929953
reading loomis atm but ill look into dodson and vilppu, thanks
>>2929954
>>2929956
I have that same image saved for reference.
I have keys of drawing and need to read through it because i know for a fact i need to get away from symbol drawing
friends pointed out some stuff too, good practice and all but still clearly needs work
All I wanted was to draw my character for dungeons and dragons and now I'm flipping pictures over and turning off 3/4ths of my brain to properly draw shapes
How would you construct this face?
>>2929675
You and me brother - done this bullshit for 12 years.
>>2929986
You have the reference in front of you.
It's less of construction and more of observation.
Please critique me, it's a wip..
I got it from "lucy li nude from below" in google images, should come up with her gallery
>>2929990
My usual methods for construction are obsolete for this persons structure. So im trying to see how some one else would do it. maybe I can learn something.

Measure?
In the entirety of my drawing, or a certain part? I'm not sure what you mean exactly.
>>2930001
>>2930004
>>2930008
The entire drawing. Like in pic and that post.
Did you check that edges or extremities aligned with the rest of the drawing?.
>>2930014
Damn, I honestly don't know how to check for that. I have a pdf of Drawing on the Right Side, so I'll continue reading that.
Any way you could red line my drawing to help me see?
Tear me a new one /ic/.
Slant is due to camera angle mostly.
>>2928599
The construction is well done, but there's no detail, did you use a reference?
fuck i hate it when i press too hard on the paper...shouldn't of done that.........
crit?
>>2930044
looks creepy desu
>>2930044
Never draw the face-features without the head. Period.
Than take time and read up on how to construct a face - Loomis, Dodson whoever you like. Learn why an eye is shaped like it is. What's beneath the skin. How does a smile change the rest of thee face? How does the nose align with the ear, the eyes with the nose?
Draw with references, measure carefully and informed.
>>2930021
Could you post the ref? Generally you're missing forms in the face - it feels pretty flat all in all but I don't see any glaring mistakes.

>>2929855
Shoulders and clavicles don't work like that. And if her head is tilted forwards, which seems to be the case from the position of her eyes relative to the middle line, you'd have to move her head lower.
Everything else is pretty bland and unconvincing as well.
>>2930021
Yeah, a male skull from Skull Sketcher.
how is this? should I be pushing the values?
>>2929387
I don't know I just hope there's someone else doing it xD
>>2930112
That depends on your purpose. IMO, the top of his hat should get more shading.
>>2930115
There are definitely other people who give constructive feedback in this thread, and although I felt like my posts comprised the majority of it three weeks ago, now I see more and more posts from people other than me doing it. I like the sight and I'd like to believe that my example inspired some of them.
>>2930112
Could you post the ref? I think you could go a tad bit darker here and there - but I'd really need to see the ref to say anything.
>>2930103
>Let's construct the head
>Let's draw the eyes

>>2929016
Anon, the head is way too big in comparison to the body. Also her left (your right) boob looks flat. Try focusing more on getting the proportions down.
Draw the full body, and don't rush into painting. You added color without getting finishing the body and getting tbe proportions down.
keep working at it, anon.
