If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

couple things. I'm sure there are more values you can add in there. since the face is too light, it's flat.

also left side of the face that's turning away is wider in proportion to the right side. it should be the opposite. you should see less of the left side as it turns away from view. same with the eyes.

Proportions. The eye is too big and the ear is too close to it. The angle of the lips is too big. I have never seen a moustache that grows on the cheek. Growing upwards is an even more rare case. Overall, he looks like an ancient human between a cro-magnon and a neanderthal, closer in evolution to the former. Idk. I'd say that I like CSP a lot more, but I'm using a pretty old version of Photoshop, CS 8.0. The big disadvantage of CSP is a grave lack of filters, so I have to use Photoshop as well if I want something like noise, rain, or wave texture done fast.

bruh you keep posting this every week.

>Anyone else have trouble finishing a piece once you start it and ending up surrounded with a bunch of uncompleted pieces?

All the time, but it's not a problem if you just keep moving on and drawing. Don't cling on to each drawing so much, especially when you're still so early in the beginning stages. You'll have plenty of opportunity to fill up that sketchbook with much better sketches than the same ones you've been posting for weeks. Old sketches gonna be irrelevant when you have lots of new work incoming.

Also, at your beginner level, messy lines isn't a style. It's just a bad habit.

I recommend Steve Huston's head construction lesson on youtube and drill it or Reilly head abstractions like 10-50 times a day with simple constructions then look at Asaro heads after to study the planes. You have an idea of 3D forms so you're not doing too bad, but you really need those proportions. Pic related should give you a better idea of head structure, good luck, anon.

Day 1? Don't forget that the artist that brings the most tools to the table wins, using a ruler or any other means to make a straight line isn't cheating. None of it is ever cheating and make sure you learn how to take critiques and improve based on what better artists tell you and never take it personally, the faster you learn that, the faster you will progress.

>>2913849

The sketches are fairly well done, as usual. The big head is absolutely bad (uneven eyes, nose, mouth, and chin not aligned, ear too small and too close to the eye, eyes too far up, head outlines, etc), and the others are too small to tell anything. I'd say they're better than the previous ones, but I'd also like to ask: do you live in Mongolia or some other Asian country? There's always something Mongolic about many or most of your heads. Maybe I'm seeing things.

Looks shitty, dude. But your understanding of values is halfway ok.
>>
>>2914223
It is horrible, to be honest. Not only the crotch, but everything except the shape and size of the hands. Go learn anatomy. And then draw some gestures to understand body dynamics. After that, you may attempt to draw something like that again.
>>
>>2914223
You should practice line confidence. Don't scratch your drawings out. This pose looks incredibly stiff and I'm not sure what your figure is even doing. The head is much too big for the shoulder width and the shoulders should be pushed back and spread out more. The waist just looks bizarre as well. As >>2914229 said, practice gesture drawings before trying to do something like this. It'll give more more line confidence and better understanding how the body moves.

Hey that's a pretty good studo you did. I might say that you missed some angles though.

I used the liquify tool on PS to fix that jaw and ear placement. Added some bright spots and added some volume to her right eyebrow/eye. Refined the end of the smile and some hair angles. I'm using a mouse, so I couldn't paint over.

Keep going, ur doing gr8.

I don't get why you just drew the outlines, it looks a lot like a negative space drawing. Did you bade this on a underlying skeleton or some forms? Main problem is the single parts of the body don't fit together and it's really flat.
>>

It's pretty bad. The colours you chose don't look human at all. And the anatomy is pretty bad. Look at the photos OP posted and draw them instead - you are not at the level to draw from imagination without references.

From scratch? What did I do wrong?
>>
>>2914372
The body is great dynamic-wise, but the proportions are kinda fucked. The legs don't show the motion as well as the body (the movement isn't as natural), but not that bad either.
About the proportions/anatomy:
Her thighs are too short (thighs are usually longer than calves);
her arms are TOO long (she could scratch under her knee without bending, which is something only apes can do);
her derriere is a bit flat for a female;
the position of the left arm is dubious;
the right shoulder looks weird;
the head is simply unrealistic, but I wouldn't call it a bad-looking style. You absolutely have to fix the length and shape of the nose along with the upper lip, though.

If I compare the drawing with your reference:
Your head is noticeably taller in relation to the body.
I say it again, the arms are screwed.
The angle is different.
>>
>>2914385
you thought you did a good job
>>
So I keep hearing "draw from your shoulder". But does this apply for shorter lines as well? I usually draw from my elbow and I do way better than shoulder.

I draw mostly on copy paper for practice. Should I use my shoulder more?
>>
>>2914402
>> But does this apply for shorter lines as well?
You may do it, but it is unnecessary for short lines. Still, it helps your getting accustomed to drawing from the shoulder.

Though you've been drawing for so long it seems like you never delved into forms or construction, you copied the lines your mind created but not the forms of the woman. I'm still trying to get forms right myself - pic related.

>>

maybe Katsuya Terada, his girl portraits always have prominent lips I think.
>im not sure any artist can consistently draw full lips without them looking dumb
it has to fit with the rest of the drawing. there's usually a shadow where the lips meet and under the middle of the lower lip, so lines there will look fine, but the rest of the lips blends softly into the face.
>omits some lines of the lips
it's not like there are actual lines on the face. and for a successful drawing, it is as important to know what to leave out, as it is to know what to draw.

You should really just draw a bunch of boxes since you dont seem to be able to construct them effortlessly yet
You're trying to create complex forms like hands without properly forming the simple shapes that they are made from

Just make sure youre not getting ahead of yourself, the basics are invaluable
>>
>>2914780

>>
>>2913048
i've wondered this for a while: when the hell did portrait studies get shilled so much in /beg/ threads? from the looks of it oftentimes 80% of these guys wouldn't even be able to render basic geometric forms, much less rudimentary still lives, to the degree necessary to do portrait value studies and be getting anything instructional from it. telling beginners they need to study more anatomy or loomis before they can even properly render (or even draw well) a white cylinder is a mistake.

>>
>>2914801
You misunderstand the point of portrait studies completely, they are a time-honored beginner's subject. You needn't have any knowledge of construction or anatomy in order to copy an image 1:1.
The entire point is to teach the absolute novice how to see "properly" and use their eyes to draw what is there and not what their untrained brain tells them is there. From there you move onto simple forms and values, and continue into complex forms and lighting
>>
>>2914816

time-honored since when, 2010? no foundational book i've ever come across - not only the west but also the libraries of the chinese and russian teachers i've studied under - has ever recommended doing something so stupid. why can't you learn to "see properly" with geometric forms? like i said, a majority of people in /beg/ can't even replicate an ellipse in perspective, much less some arrangement of cubes and spheres on a table, without running to PS gimmicks.

No it's a "Not all women care for money" explanation. As long as we are happy and things work out who cares who earns the money. Don't talk to redpillers Anon they'll mess with your brain.

Every time I post something positiv around here (I do sport everyday, I worked on my disciplin, I overcame my depression with therapy and my lovely husband) you depressing fucks call this bait and obvious lies cause no fucking person in the history of autism ever stuck to their principles and actually bettered themself.

Especially in /beg/ the cynism is strong.

you might find a woman who doesnt care about money but i still feel its not correct to raise a family in poverty.

How do I cure symbol drawing? I've read the sticky and books but those make me completely mechanical and lost reason to draw, burn out in 2 min.

Otherwise, I symbol draw.

I'm severely depressed just so you know, to a point where my mind is numb like a dried lemon or something,
pretty much why I'm bothering with this.

Anyone else with depression kept trying and got better, or in the process of learning?

Right now I'm only looking at the highest contrast point which would be the sun on the very left side of the image. Then my eyes follow the rays and bash against the first dude an get stuck there or bounce out of the frame.

This is a terrible composition - guide my eye to the center damnit.
>>
Does it matter (quality-wise) whether I draw in 72 dpi or 300 dpi?

>>2915085
I know almost nothing about the composition, but I think that something must be done about the mountains in the background. And it's a bit hard to tell the scale too. The rocks in the sea look the same as those... uh, beings on the beach. My first impression was "undead fishing trash in the sewers", thanks to your unnaturally smooth-looking cliffs.

Made a blogpost about this some time ago - maybe it helps, just take the 30 minutes out of your day to watch the videos:

Composition and framing:
A good video that shortly explains how to guide the eyes with composition and framing: youtu.be/1McYZX6KScg

We can additionally look at other art forms for more help on framing - movies and photos - in the end - also try to convey emotions to the viewer and try to guide their eyes. Here's a simple list of different shots we can apply to our drawings: www.mediacollege.com/video/cam…

Another amazing video on composition and framing: youtu.be/CvLQJReDhic

This fine man does a great job explaining contrast in a few minutes: youtu.be/l1kkU-sMwHM

General rule: We automatically look at the highest contrast point! So if you want to underline especially ( for example) the eyes in your drawing - shade the eyelashes/ pupil/ eyelids a tad bit darker than anything else in your painting. Combined with the white of the eye, the eyes will become the focal point of your drawings!

>>
>>2915182
Bro this is... sigh... The neck really isn't the problem here. Everything is. Try to look into the Houston video on heads for starters, then look into gesture drawings by Vlippu, then learn how to look at a picture and draw what you see. This is rubbish.
>>
>>2915203
Is this bait? C'mon anon that's ridicilus - go in the fucking FAQ and start using some resources to learn! There is nothing to save in this picture!
>>
>>2915203
not really, the problem with the head is that it's not a form, think like a 3d shape. Our heads are like spheres or football shaped. You have to think of it as drawing a combination of these. Go look at a cup, you don't draw it has a flat image, you think of it has a cylinder and you shape it as you see fit. See what i'm getting at?

Try to draw the head of your drawing as a standalone 3d shape and you'll see how silly it looks.

This summer I start drawing for real and getting my shit together. I want to focus on line weight, and dynamic/dramatic figures. >>
>>2915254
Can't I'm at work. The one on the left isn't too bad really - the character feels floaty - try to give him some weight. http://www.proko.com/how-to-draw-balanced-poses/

Besides that the hip of the person on the right is too small. And again weight distribution is a huge issue. That's why the character seemingly looks weird.

You could give him a bit more shoulder mass on the left shoulder. Try to work on your character's stance - think about the position of the feet relative to each other. The right leg on the right guy is much shorter than on the left leg.

I'm not a digital painter or anything but I made some corrections to your drawing to help you nail it down. You're very close, you just need to commit and create some depth with some line darkening and really look at the image to see the obvious defects, like the misaligned pupils and odd jaw line etc. etc.

I didn't fix the lips for you but I drew in red a better starting point for them.

Looks good so far, the beauty of working digitally is you can keep fixing it. So keep fixing it.

A good tip would be to lower the opacity of your source image and lay your figure over it to compare the differences. I did it for you in red here, you can immediately see what you need to correct.

If you're a beginner, start with the head. but first learn the gesture, do a bunch of quick exercises to learn the form and proportions.

I'll continue to give you feedback anyway, either until you learn to draw humans better than me or until I get fed up with this place.

Most of the frontal skull views look really good, but you keep repeating your mistakes when drawing 3/4 heads:
1) Uneven eyes;
2) The space between the eyes is too wide;
3) Even though the placement of the ear is alright, the back of the head goes too far back. I say it again, the back of the cranium goes behind the ear until you view it from an angle of more than 60 (relative to the front). The jaw is actually longer than you think, many beginners get caught in this trap.

Observe necks IRL as well. Their form, where the outlines are in different views, the location of the Adam's apple.

The skulls in views other than frontal look bad, unfortunately. Even so, your small heads look more human than before (not including the alien dude with the torso) due to properly done faces, but you have to seriously work on the shape of your craniums. Generally speaking, they have less length and height than a beginner might think.

Here is what happens if you add value and tweak some of your symbol drawing into more of a representation of your source (I tried to keep it looking like something you could achieve right now by just taking a second go at it).
