If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

heads, feedback appreciated
>>
>>2901862
The skulls are simply so-so, but those faces and heads on the first two sheets look extremely fugly. Two of your subjects also suffer from hydrocephalia, and two or three suffer from the opposite, meaning they have little skull. If you are to study heads and skulls to understand their form, it's better to draw the skulls in a side view first. The bigger and more detailed they are, the better.
>>
>>2901881
>> they have little skull
To make this sound less weird, let's add this:
> have little skull to hold their brain
>>
>>2901862
guy above me what he said.

also idk if thisd help you but i had a phobia of drawing faces. Actually, i was scared of peoples faces irl, i couldnt look people in the eye and even if i did i was panicking.

what helped me get over it is to approach it not by capturing likeness, that comes after (i think), but to reduce the face and head to its forms. you cant be too careful starting out, it will choke you and result in sad cringey drawings, just as sad and cringey as i was trying to socialize.
>>
>>2901890
awwww, im glad you got rid of your anxiety
>>
>>2901881
So either drawing the skull to large or too small. Hm. alright, I will try the side view, thank you.

>>2901890
haha yeah I am getting caught up in capturing likeness at the moment, I will keep that in mind.

I'm actually trying to be more general and I'm still getting used to memorizing the forms, so I exaggerate them. But like you say, maybe I should try to reduce them more to streamline my understanding.

Anyway, I'll continue to practice these. Thanks for the feedback!

nah, no way. don't even think like that anon or else you'll weigh yourself down with all that time.

you can get relatively decent and functional as an artist in a year with 3 hrs of practice each day.
>>

>>
>>2901994
It doesn't work like that, anon. Time and what I practice doesn't matter. It's what you do. All the things you listed is what you should be doing even if it's only 5 minutes. Maybe even a minute doodle. 30 seconds.

4. show her lucky star and cite that the characters are 18. mention that visual style does not correlate with character age.
5. tell her to calm down and to think logically about the morality of the act of drawing something on paper. tell her not to make such drastic and emotionally driven decisions without sitting and thinking about it for a while.

and remember, she doesnt want to think her son is a pedo. if you deny it, she will want to believe it.

the important part is that you go and talk about it. it will determine your future.

Unless you sold them or uploaded them online I doubt it's illegal to do drawings. If someone could go to jail for a 2 minute sketch that would be insane. And even if so chances are that it will be small punishment, perhaps a fine.

Your knowledge of anatomy is non-existent. Your faces look ugly. Your clothes aren't drawn properly (but that's a thing almost nobody cares about when drawing cartoons). Learn to draw normal humans before you try to stylize them. I can't believe it's me who's telling you that, but even I can tell why your humans look about as bad as my first pictures. And that says a real fucking lot.

To sum it up, you may be able to paint to some (beginner) degree, but you can't draw at all. Learning to draw is essential for someone who wants to picture humans and other exotic beasts of this world. "I draw cartoons" is just an excuse for lazy assholes. Even if you draw only qt animoo gurls, you can't possibly hope to fuck up the face and anatomy and still make the picture look good. Hint: if you draw a pleasing face, minor anatomy fuck-ups don't ruin the picture as much, and you can hide minor anatomy fuck-ups under loose clothing; but that's not an excuse for not trying to learn anatomy.

Your drawings look a bit too 2D and I can see that you're really just drawing without having a good mindset about the 3D aspect of the characters.
I suggest studying anatomy, read Bridgmans complete guide, it will give you a sense what kind of "symbols" you have to put into your drawings to give them that "3D" feel to them. Also I suggest drawing from realism as well, and try to not "finish" a drawing before you can really "see" your drawing pop out.
Even cartoons have a 3D feel to them if done properly, for now don't focus too much on having your own style, your just going to end up like your average deviantart user with no progress over the years. Besides Bridgeman and drawing from realism (reference drawings, google image poses etc.) also check a few of your favourite artists, "dont" focus too much on the cartoonish aspect of them as say don't put too much attention to the things like "eyes, mouths etc." but more on how that person draws those things, and how those drawings are really made "3D". But I suggest to do the former 2 first.
Anyway never finish a sketch if it doesn't look "right" enough, if its not right enough, you need to study more anatomy/poses.
>>2902523
Number one rule. never, ever trace shit. Look at a reference, and draw it on your sketchbook/wacom tablet instead, use your memory skills to remember how the face proportions go and study the reference as well. You will become extremely good if you do this, see how lines correlate to the rest of the face, for example eyes generally go on the same height as ears.
>>
>>2902509
>>2902421
>>2902517
>>2902524
In case you don't get my point and if I'm too subtle for you: If you do not strive for reality then we cannot judge you by any objective standards. There are objectively realistic proportions but there are no comic proportions we can judge you by.

Your feets are way to small in >>2902421 and they have no ankles - but is that because you are a bad at drawing or is that your "style"? The nose isn't right, but again is that part of your style or do you just suck? No elbows? Again, do you suck or is that intentional stylization? If you were to fix all these things it would no longer be a comic or it would be a very realistic comic like some marvel comics.
>>
>>2902529
>never trace
this wasnt meant to be a finished work, i dont even do digital. its meant to be a double check to make sure the lines i use can be applied to real faces. sorry if i didnt make that clear, i assumed people would know. the question being, are these lines generally correct?
>>
>>2902530
Drawing is my only talent. I can draw ankles. You're right about everything else though. I guess it comes down to this: does it convey movement? Is it appealing to look at?

>>2902529
I definitely need to learn more. When it comes to 3d-ness I am flying in the dark.
>>
>>2902531
no they're not, the lines are too "straight"
also loomis is shit, the head isn't a fuckin circle. you should study skeletons instead, the skeleton is egg shaped with a diamond shaped at the bottom, perspective is never a circle form, if you keep drawing with circles you will get confused later whn you want to draw more realistic characters
Best way to study is to learn skeletons and anatomy/muscles etc. instead. Once you got the hang of that you go over to perspective. Read "Perspective Made Easy" by Norling

The face elements are not positioned properly with that dude who resembles Link from The Legend of Zelda. The girl's face is simply fugly. In each case, their hands, neck, and feet are too small and have bad anatomy overall. The shoulders are small. The proportions are fucked. Link's joints bend like he is made of jelly. Your perspective and foreshortening knowledge is non-existent. That's about all you have to fix to make a better looking cartoony drawing.

>>2902532
>does it convey movement? Is it appealing to look at?

No and no.

Well it does indicate movement but not as much as it could if done with extreme perspective / foreshortening and a more dynamic pose.

It's not appealing to look at because it is neither realistic enough nor stylized enough, it sits in the middle and your flaws in anatomy become very apparent.

Pic related conveys a lot of movement and is very dynamic. It's also based on fairly realistic proportions, it's based on Loomis idealistic 8 heads tall proportions.

It's true that the head is more like an egg than a sphere. The average Human is also between 6 and 7,5 heads tall whereas Loomis made them 8 heads tall. Loomis proportions are not realistic but idealistic, they look very handsome and heroic.

He is still worth learning, his proportions if done properly still look realistic and it's easy to adjust.

Why would that be a bad habit?

And say, if you were to draw someone throwing a punch, do you know how far the arm can bend? You can exaggerate that bending in a semi-realistic drawing but if you have no clue chances are that you will draw something that looks painful and broken.

>>2902544
>I want to be able to do foreshortening though.

Can't do that without lots of knowledge about perspective, proportions and gesture. Go start learning instead of making excuses.

>>2902547
>cartoonized versions of bodies

Idealistic proportions are far off from "cartoonized" and if you can do a 8 heads figure it's no big deal to do 7,5 heads... Unless you are retarded.

And they indeed brought improvement to those who were eager to listen and show their immediate progress, like that landscape guy. I suppose it wouldn't work just as well if I actually used a name, or a trip, or another poster-identifying characteristic, now would it?

See, that's another reason I didn't want to post that portrait. A human nature is such that a bad impression lasts way too long. The form is what makes the trolling in the eyes of an observer, dude. Proper critique is always welcome. Sadly, here it is overwhelmed by apes aping around. The only useful and novel things I got from this thread would be (chronolog.):
1) The understanding that I didn't notice some of the things when doing a reverse profile portrait on paper (but it still looks pretty close to the original).
2) Nosebro's picture of how a feminine nape view should look.
3) The knowledge that I draw some good-looking feet.
4) The understanding that my knowledge of anatomy and foreshortening is lacking overall and I need to study more.
5) The understanding that my Yuuka portrait looks bad and I need to study more.
6) The understanding that the portraits which followed finally have the proper proportions, except the Cirno's one.
7) That Cirno redline, which was the most useful of them.
8) The understanding that my best method of drawing hair is unappealing and I need to reconsider it. (I still didn't get any guidance on how to draw realistic hair properly; I only got it from my senpai in another thread on another imageboard, and that was easily the best advice I ever got on drawing/rendering/painting.)

In return, I gave some useful advice to other beginners and simply socialized with others amiably. And why, the atmosphere in this thread looked much more peaceful than before.

Am I supposed to be able to draw an actual straight line anytime soon after starting the drawbox method? Or is it a gradual process that takes time?

When I copy something from reference, is it normal to only see cartoons well first? Real life is very hard for me to visualize the lines.

Is it normal for a beginner to have a "minds eye" that doesn't work? VERY hard to visualize anything.

I feel broken.

Dear IC
My stuff is so bad it doesn't even deserve to be in the beginner thread.
I'm a working adult in a non-art field so I have very little time to art.
BUT, I recently learned that I need surgery (ear-related problem), which means I'll probably get a 3 weeks sick leave from work. It's been a while since I had so much time to myself...
Knowing that I want to draw lewd waifus, what's the best way to improve in this period? is there a specific, helpful book that you would recommend? Any advce at all, really?
>>
>>2902826
HOLY SHIT I CAN DRAW STRAIGHT LINES I JUST NEED PAPER UNDER MY PAPER TO MAKE A SOFTER SURFACE YES!!!!
>>
>>2902860
There is no easy way.

Read the sticky.
>>
>>2902862
How is stacking paper is supposed to make your lines straighter.
>>
>>2902860
you need to practice about 6 hours a day for about 2 years before you can draw lewd waifus competently.

lower your living costs and cut down your employed hours.
>>
>>2902894
The cushon below makes for a less... resistive experience.

Might just be in my head but it went from broomstick to fairly consistent in that one change. I did rip through the top layer on one, is that normal?
>>
>>2902895
Yeaaaah no. I can't. I can't realisticly cut down my work hours, without changing my whole lifestyle (which would imply: leaving a gf I love, moving out of city, finding a new job a living place, and lot of other things)

I just wanted to make the best of that time, making the right habits so I could dish out maybe 2hours daily on art when I would resume working, and use the initial period to get the motivation I need to get reliably started.

Guess I'll just read the sticky
>>
>>2902910
sounds like you have a claustrophobic life. do you really need all that money? what do you spend it on? is it so worth it that stops you from doing anything you might want to do?
>>
>>2902906
Sounds like you are carving the lines into the paper.
>>
>>2902842
To have your opinion
>>
>>2902921
On that one, I was, but it was straight and consistant as a razer's edge.

Should I not do that?
>>
>>2902918
I don't need all that money. I could survive with a 30% cut on my salary without any significant impact.
But I work in a field where you have to put on the hours or you don't get any credit. I can't work part-time and expect my co-workers to respect my work.
>>
>>2902931
oh well, sucks for you. enjoy your life of no discipline or pursuits
>>
>>2902860
If you're fine with only drawing lewd faces, it is possible to learn it without any tutorials or textbooks in a week. Simply copy some of the best to understand what precisely makes a good naughty face, and then try making your own. Everything else requires much more time to learn than 2 or 3 weeks.

Is there such a thing like "educating" your eye to get the proportions right just by the endless circle of looking, drawing and erasing or should I start using a rule and measuring like a huge faggot
>>
>>2903113
Loomis this early? Isn't he for when i can copy stuff?
>>
>>2903114
It's okay to use the tip of your pencil and viewfinders to measure when you're working from life or reference. In time your eye will be educated as you draw from life.

The circle of looking drawing and erasing may not necessarily increase your sense of proportion int he long run but it can help you correct some errors int he drawing you're working on (Though I'd say it's also good to just do it over rather than erasing)
>>
>>2903116
>this early
It's not like this is some linear timeline of progression, of course you probably shouldn't be doing hogarth before you can draw a box, but you can start learning many things at once.

Don't just grind at draw a box lesson 1, they're meant to be warm ups and side exercises, get in the habit of having them be daily for a short while.Start on something like Dodson or Loomis.
>>
>>2903129
I work best with a structure.

Alright, so lesson 1 (and I assume further lessons?) a little bit as a warmup and then Dodson/Loomis, thanks anon.

The two frontal views look pretty decent, but those at a slight horizontal angle... not so much, especially the one with a hai and moustache (looks like an inbred degenerate, to be honest). The placement of their eyes and noses is what ruins them. Still, the head in the left corner of your picture looks pretty much how it should look. You should probably worry about your psyche a little when you draw such obvious phallic symbols out of nowhere.

>>2903187
Those ears look really out of place for someone who doesn't wear glasses.

look at the pic, the ear is supposed to line up with the white part of his face and should be under his hat and your angles on the black around the eyes is wrong

Thank you for the critique; I set out with the intention of making the mustachioed man look like Rene Descartes

(I think I'm coming to terms with the fact that I might be sexually attracted to dark-haired men with heavy vocal grill and effeminate faces; the representations don't concern me as much as they should, perhaps)
>>
>>2903229
If that's supposed to be Descartes, then I dare say that pretty much nobody would be able to perceive their similarities... Maybe a similar hairstyle would make at least someone recognize it, but the face is still too off.
