If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Is stylization OK when doing studies?
Note that I can't into frizzy hair. Also, fuck the damn cloth paterns. I'm aware that the face ended up quite different from the model.

Any tips for someone going from traditional (pencil/ink line drawing) to digital? It feels like I can't draw my lines the way I wish.

Also, go all out, I need some critique and/or advice.

>>
>>2893489
stylization is a nice tool but you should not use while studying like this
you must start with realism. first learn to draw what you see, THEN learn to distort that the proper way.
keep up the good work, cheers!
>>
>>2893509
Actually, I usually draw what I see. As of late, I've been studying how to distort it. Thus a stylized study.

Though my problem right now is me stuggling with transition to digital.

Well, learning digital art is like learning to draw again. I recommend you learning (BASIC) realism in digital art (basic because realism is quite harder to achieve in digital, while stylization is quite easier) before stylization

2000 calories a day and no exercise? Lol, you must be kidding. I'm getting about 1300—1600 calories daily for years (probably even less) and I exercise intensely, but it still took about a year (since I started that) to lose 20 kgs, and after that, I'm just staying at my ideal BMI. Though it has some big disadvantages: you can't grow a lot of muscle that way (but you can indeed shape your body to a nicely looking degree) and it can make you really tired if you exercise a lot. On the other hand, if you don't exercise, you can gain some fat again even while eating only that much.

And for such a fattie it may be literally impossible, because fat guys usually lack self-control. That's why they get so fat: they always submit to their gluttony, and eating something makes you less likely to exercise for some time. Then they get hungry again, and the vicious cycle repeats.

What's better; Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain or Draw a Box?
>>
>>2893650
proportions and perspective are a bit off but colors are nice
>>
>>2893780

Drawing on the side of the brain is for complete beginners with zero observational skills, meaning that you are totally incapable of drawing what's in front of you without symbol drawing. Draw A box is the next step.
>>
>>2893786
Well, I started reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and I feel like I already have a grasp on the concept of drawing what's in front of you instead of symbol drawing. But I haven't really gotten that far in the book. I've just done the upside-down drawing exercise and the exercise where you trace your own hand on the viewfinder.
>>
>>2893795
no practice is lost time, its a good book so you might as well read and do all of it.
>>
>>2893795

I can't see why you couldn't get started on Draw A box, but do keep practicing your observational skills for a bit so you have an easier time

Add more details to the closest ones and consider doing something about that bad looking airbrush dirt on the snow (smudge it or make it look more realistic).

/ic/ doesn't appreciate stylization, and the stylization thread is trash. here, you should be posting more serious studies from life/photos and then using what you learn from that on your own personal subjects.
this bird has minimal to no shading, weird anatomy (are they wings or arms? is it's body shaped like a person or a bird?) sloppy linework (look at the hat, it's a perfect cone with concentric rings, mathematically the easiest shape, and you fucked it up) and it just looks wierd, but nothing we haven't gone through as beginners. the best advice would be to look for ways to accurately draw from life(without just symbol drawing it), like semi-blind drawing.

Also, anybody wanna bash my semi-blind drawing technique? besides >>2893444, what should i do? i just learned this shit and i am insane about it.

To be fair, most people's stylization suckz. And you can't give critique because you cannot know what is intentional and what is just the result of being a bad artist.

Like >>2893415

Should I tell him that the neck is too small for such a big head, or is that intentional and part of his or her "style"? Style almost always means to be anatomically incorrect on purpose but than you cannot possibly judge them objectively, so what's the point? And for many beginner artists style seems to mean that they can get away (or think they can) without learning form, perspective and anatomy.
>>

To add: Sometimes people upload stylized images that at least are founded on perspective and form, these can be judged objectively. That's the least stylized artists can do, make use of perspective and form.

But instead you get these shitty flat full frontal bullshit drawings that shows that the artists has not read the sticky and has no real interest in becoming a good artists.

Looks great, but it'd be better to give (back) some detalization to the trees that are to the left to the center of the picture. At the center, you have a tree that is slightly darker than the ones surrounding it. The further away is the object, the less dark it is (because it is more obscured by particles that are in the air). I propose covering the furthest trees with some haze, same for the ones at the top of the mountain. Finally, the snow looks too realistic compared to the road. I think you should improve the road too. If it is paved with asphalt, then add some noise (spaced) and blur it with the distance (might be worth it to try this for its whole length, including the closest part).

No problem, mate.
I think you've gone a bit overboard with the additional haze over the whole height of the mountain, but it depends (remember that fog thickens with distance). I don't think I can point anything else out, except for the tree right nearby the central pine. Lighter than the ones surrounding it, so it stands out. There is also some dark aura near the closest trees, is this intentional? Not sure what you could want to tell with it. Finally, I see some characteristic patterns in the sky that stem from... idk, I forgot what causes those. Extension artifacts, or poorly made Photoshop filters, or whatever. They may not be visible without an IPS display, and it's likely nobody will care if the resolution is small.

Anyway, when you consider the piece finished, let it rest overnight and inspect it again. If you can't find anything else you want to improve, then it is truly finished.

Yeah, most of my inspiration on style is based of that game. Obviously, it'll be a long time until my drawings reach that level of quality!
>>
>>2894407
not bad at all for something stylized. Its hard to give advice in general because its so stylized, the neck is too long though and the sweater collar is off. Some proportions are off, i suggest you study anatomy and loomis regardless of doing stylized work or not.
>>
>>2894426

The body looks contorted a bit. The cloak and the hood are masking the construction.

Her left arm looks like it coming out from the center of her chest. I feel like that that angle, you should see more of the left shoulder and the chest. The direction the torso is facing is not so clear, the abdomen feels off. The hips/legs appear too large and detached from the upper body.
>>
>>2894435
Thanks. I just noticed how tall the neck is! Also the arms are a little too short (And one is longer than the other), but I can't see how the sweater collar is wrong... Anyway, thanks for the advice.

What do you think of vilppu's style of "feeling" the gesture?

It seems like the only way to "get it" is to draw constantly for 10 years until it clicks. Very difficult to learn compared to mechanical drawing skills where you can literally measure angles and ellipses.

>>
I'm currently having this issue where when I want to draw a neutral pose of a figure or character standing, it will come out flat, stiff, and uninteresting. So I'll try and exaggerate the gesutre, and then it's like "what the fuck is this character doing, anatomy does not allow this"

Does anyone else have this issue? What should I do?
>>
>>2894632
Yeah, I have trouble with this as well.

I find it much harder to find the gesture in front on standing poses than something more dynamic.
>>
>>2894632
In that instance, use the appeal of the character to make it interesting. Such as colors, the clothes that they wear, face, hair, etc.

Maybe add a background.

So I guess flat and stiff is the point? It IS a neutral pose, maybe I should focus more on anatomical accuracy and rendering in those instances, and leave the exaggerated gesture for more dynamic scenes

it's just that sometimes you've just gotta draw a person being all normal and having a conversation, and it's like "fuck, this is boring as shit"

>>
>>2894650
Remember that depth can be created with shadow and perspective, so it's not necessarily flat. Stiff on the other hand is untrue as well. When you're standing naturally, are you stiff? Of course not. You're relaxed. Although, as long as it conveys what you want as in a standing/neutral pose then it's fine.

But yeah try out different things and see how they work. It depends a lot on what kind of scene you're trying to set as well. Perhaps you have them standing under a tree so bright light falls onto the character when most of their body is in shade. It makes it a lot more interesting and appealing to look at.

Other times, it could just be something as simple as wanting to see what something will look in your style since you may have never drawn it before.

what helps me is to keep in mind that every part of the individual is being affected by gravity. that is a lot of force acting on an adult person. I reccomend looking at some bookings about animation, it will help you put energy into characters that are just standing around. "the art of drawing animals" has some good sections, mostly about horses though, but you can tell the author knows how to animate

Not directly related but what does everyone think of "prismacolor col-erase" color pencils, I don't want to use them for artistic drawing, I want them for physics and math to differenciate between variables/parentheses/graphs, basically to make the algebra part more visual and give myself a little more room for failure (an option to erase). So, do they erase well? that's my main question. Also another thing that's not so important but I'd like, is their color range usable for (vaguely) applying color theory for operations? (for example using yellow for a number added/multiplied/etc to a blue number equals green)

I already asked this on another thread but I want more people to view this and I don't think it deserves its own thread. SOrry.

How is it misleading?

Even when you draw simple cartoons you need to understand construction, form and perspective (pic related, disney like cat using spheres and cylinders).

You also need to know some basic anatomy or even a lot when you want to draw stuff like better looking mangas. Doing a few still life's of cloth thrown over stuff can greatly help you render stylized carton clothing.

Once you learned and all that you can also draw realistic. Tell me how it is misleading unless you want to draw stuff that is even more "stylized" than disney cartoons or decent looking manga.
>>
>>2894846
gotta blame your failures on something xD
>>
>>2894817
Why did you draw the guy as being like 4 times as big as the woman?

Is this some Attack on Titan thing?
>>
So how does drawing stuff you can't see work when you get out of symbol drawing? I don't think I understand.

Is it replacing the basic symbols that you have for those things with other more effective symbols?

I don't think it's even that. I think it's rather being self-delusional about ones own skill, not even realizing ones own failures.
Chances are that if someone says that he doesn't need to learn the basic stuff that is necessary to even draw a stylized and simplified cartoon cat that he does not realize his lack of knowledge or skill.

You can make halfway decent images without construction and perspective by tracing and memorizing. Draw a cat from a picture a few times and you can draw it from memory and it may look good.

The question is if you can draw it with different lightning, from difficult angles, animate it, draw it in a fish eye perspective without a photo reference.
>>
>>2894876
>drawing stuff you can't see
???
>>
>>2894876
First you draw the gesture, then you draw 3d shapes and then you render it.
>>
>>2894879
As in drawing from imagination or memory rather than reference. Not something that's invisible, I can do that with my eyes closed.
>>
>>2894873
ahah thank you for pointing it out. I honestly did not see that. I felt like I drew the guy's face too wide, so I must've compensated for it on the lady.
>>
>>2894882
the sticky will help you with that.
>>
>>2894882
Breaking out of symbol drawing means you can draw what you see, even what you see in your mind. It's a little more work because you have to learn how to clear your mind's eye as opposed to clearing your eyes to the real world. You have to clear your vision to your imaginary world.
>>
can't stop symbol drawing eyes when trying to draw heads. wat do. i'm still on the "draw what you see" phase so construction is a bit too far yet
>>
>>2894942
Go on pinterest and search eye tutorials or something. You'll see how it's actually a ball being wrapped around by the eyelids. This may or may not work the first time. It makes more sense if you draw a lot of faces, at least it did to me.

This one doesn't look as impressive, but I don't think the idea is bad. However, now I can't give any specific advice, except "continue working on it". Focus on the castle. Depending on what it is supposed to be, you may have to add a lot of texture.

Perspective is giving me a lot of trouble with structures.

I should go back right, do studies?

that op image looks pretty decent besides the awful anime face, that seems to be a trend, even in "good" art. Great body, nice rendering, anatomy is great

but the face looks like tim buckley drag and dropped some face pieces on it and called it a day.
>>
>>2895231
The picture doesn't yet have any straight lines, which could be used to judge your sense of perspective. Remember that only parallel lines converge in one point by rules of perspective. It is unlikely that a big castle has all of its structures built at the same angle, so any set of parallel lines must have its own vanishing point. It is kind of hard, but if you were to use Clip Studio Paint, it has a lot of rulers that make building the picture easier. And even if you aren't, such complex structures allow to place the vanishing points wherever you wish (if you don't mind getting too far away from the reference, that is).

>>2895237
Who knows... But you do need to understand perspective if you are to draw anything except still life in an enclosure.

No way feeling the form is going to take you 10 years, try random 3D forms out of 2D shapes by wrapping lines around them.

Hey brand new beginner here, trying to alternate between the basic mechanics from Draw a Box and copying images using the visual techniques i've gotten from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Having a real tough time with the first lesson, my handwriting has always been disgusting, any tips? Is the acceptable for a beginner or am I not learning anything from this level of bad?
>>
>>2895357
Keep at it. Takes time to get it and you might get muscle pains, that's normal. A week usually will get you pretty good. What are you getting into drawing for?

Really need your help /ic/. This is my current level, I started going to an Atelier and this is what I made drawing from life, It's stil not very good, it has a lot of errors compared to the original and the shading isn't very well done, yet I'm not a total beginner either.

My aim is to become a digital artist, landscapes and characters, considering my current level what would you suggest me to do? What books and courses?
Also quite important, when should I make the switch to digital? I'm quite dogshit at drawing on it so I will need a lot of practice. Thanks

Serious shoulder pain lol not used to it.

I want to learn to animate, was my dream as a kid but i've been telling myself I can't draw for 15 years.

Fuck it i'm trying now.
>>
>>2895362
You should read the sticky for one, it answers all the questions people usually ask. Then come back and ask something if it didn't. I would check out Aguri's guide too if you want to see a more structured approach to the stuff you're talking about.

imagimeme while doing fundies. maybe i bit off more than i can chew. is it better do work on simple busts to build confidence and practice or just jump into more complicated stuff?
>>
>>2895371
I lurked here quite a lot before wanting to go all in with art. I've read the sticky but I've also seen people cticizing it a lot.
Anyway I'm particulary lost because I don't know my level, what fundamentals I stil lack and what I should work on, some books are too beginner tier while some other stuff seems too advanced

Also I need help with digital, when should I start going for it? Should I keep sticking with pencil and paper?
>>
>>2895383
Lets start off by saying that nothing is too advanced, it's just a matter of whether or not you want to tackle it. A beginner could hit up curvilinear perspective if they want, it make them a lot of time, but it may also be really worth it. What I'm saying is, typically if it looks too advanced, it means you should attempt it because you're not going to exit your comfort zone.

With digital, you should just do it, if you want. There's no rules saying when you can do it and when not. It's just a tool. You can switch between the two if you want.
>>
>>2895378
I have no idea what's going on your picture.

so i should work on simplifying shape/gesture/action/focus/silhouette so everything reads better? or is anatomy/pose/perspective that bad?

it's supposed to be a sexually aggressive well endowed gay dragon maid on top of a flat chested shy nerd that could probably be replaced with a pillow.
>>
>>2895470
I see. Then you have to work on... well, everything you have listed. Removing the unnecessary lines would also help a lot.
>>
>>2895470
I don't know what's up with the other anon's eyes, but I could see what it was fine. Just finish it so we know you spent countless hours on something to properly crit it.

forehead is too flat. mouth and jaw sticking out from under the nose. huge underbite. think about the skeletal structure of this person. quite deformed.

but nice lines.
>>
>>2894033
You could tell them their linework and colors are terrible. It would look better with smoother, thicker lines, more thought could be put into picking colors. The hands, stylized or not, are much too large. You could also mention while they are alright at drawing folds in clothing and weight, they aren't very good at drawing the hair.

I guess it depends on how much 'style' they put into their art, but I'd always want someone to critique my art even though I draw cartoons. It's not going to destroy my 'style', but it's going to help me make a more realistic drawing.

Great cartoons have some degree of realism which makes them look like they could exist.
