If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

he's just studied the drawing enough by repetition to know where everything goes ahead of time. he's just symbol-drawing the whole thing, but it looks good because, as a cartoonist, and as someone who has drawn pretty much that exact thing before, he knows where everything goes. exactly like the stuff the guy in the video does, but more complex. the ted-x performer intentionally made it simple in terms of steps(one comma symbol for each eye, a bent T for the mouth etc) so that the audience could follow along and gain the confidence to start drawing (albeit they'd just be symbol drawing but it's better and more fun than not drawing), whereas the anime dude makes it really complex just to wow the onlookers (and you).

We all want git gud fast
But unfortunately that's not always possible
Nor is it all that fun
It's like cheating in a game
What fun is it just to beat everyone with no problem
This journey of ours is hard but that's what makes it worth going through
Despite the pain and frustration it gives us
Don't give up
I believe you can do it if you keep on trying
I'll keep on trying too
Even though I think it's pointless every single day because I might not reach my goal
I'll keep trying anyways and so should you
It gets lonely however together it's not lonely anymore
I don't know how people learn to draw but I believe it's just every individual person's understanding expressed through onto the paper
Whatever that means

It helps to think about the 3d construction of the head rather than just copying the outlines. Think about how wide the face is and how that will look in that angle. Think about how the features wrap around the head.

The jaw line on yours is too narrow and doesn't connect to the ear. The ear is too small when it should be more aligned with the eyes. The eyebrow should follow the curve of the forehead.

Lastly, pay attention to the major lines of action. For example, the neck has that sweeping curve. The shoulders also curve around the neck. The collarbones curve in the valley between the shoulders.

Overall it's looking good so far, just a few adjustments and then rendering it out.

Collar bones are wrong and look like she inserted some polish sausage below her skin.

Neck muscle comes up to high and the pose makes no sense because of it. Looks like she's trying to dislocate her own head.

You tilted her head more toward the view plane, when in the reference it's tilted further away. This also lends to the pose not making sense. The head looks more vertical than it should be if she were trying to twist her head and neck away from the viewer.

Aside from bad proportions on the human, you need some background landscape to make the scale make sense.

You have one skull near the snake and human that looks vaguely smaller than the human's head, which could make sense since the human is closer to us, but then you have another skull that's closer to the snake's head and is bigger than the other skull. But there is nothing else in the scene to tell us where that other skull is.

This makes no sense and fucks up the sense of scale and proportion for the scene. Is that second skull in the same plane as the first, and just higher up? Is it a giant's skull and in the background?

Always have a point of reference and horizon line to work with when blocking out a scene.

Is it worth taking classes at all as somebody who isn't talented and is a beginner?

I took art in highschool to actually learn how to do it but was constantly shat on for not being as good as everyone else while not actually knowing/being told how to fix it. I suppose I just looked like a slacker. Would they all be like that? I really want to avoid that kind of situation but on the other hand I feel like I could benefit from some guidance. I want to improve but constantly not knowing what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it is really getting in the way of things.

the torso is too stiff, use gesture and THEN place forms over that. I personally would not start out entirely with boxes, I find it more helpful to use round objects (the bean), and then block out the planes to make them boxes. It's more flexible for me that way

Is /beg/ fundamentally flawed since it's beginners giving other beginners advice?

/draw/ doesn't want anything to do with us and called this the containment thread. /aasg/ is the same way. I understand that getting a fresh new pair of eyes on a piece of work is helpful but when the majority of it is pointing out obvious observational/measurement errors (that will be fixed naturally over time) it seems more efficient to ditch this and post in one of the discords since it's a more intimate experience.

>>2897163

>>
>>2897187
Handwriting has nothing to do with drawing, and if you have been using your right hand since childhood you should have proficiency with it. Chicken scratching comes more from lack of knowledge than anything else. You do extra lines when you are unsure or lack the confidence to put down a single line exactly where it is needed. Working digitally though makes linework a lot tougher, so I would stick to pencil or pen for now until you are stronger at drawing.

>Is /beg/ fundamentally flawed since it's beginners giving other beginners advice?

Mostly flawed but sometimes okay.

The advice beginners need isn't complicated. The corrections they need are basic. A "pro"s advice is not necessary for most posts. Usually a beginner just a few levels higher knows enough to help out. I think experienced artists here do help out though but rarely, and they tend to cherry pick.

The problem I see all the time is people lashing out unnecessarily at beginners. I see some toxic attitudes here that people have towards anybody who posts a drawing. It seems there's a lot of angry people here who just want to shout at or act smug to anybody they can.

They're not all to blame though since there are a lot of stubborn beginners that come through who either don't bother to follow rules or would rather argue than learn.

If you manage to wade through that though, you can find some decent advice here sometimes.

Critique? In /beg/ when you're not posting a pic of boxes and perspective exercises?

You've got a better chance of winning the lottery.
>>
>>2897407
This is of dubious use. You're better off just studying anatomy and proportions then making those judgments for yourself later.

Working off of another artist's finished work is like re-saving a jpg, the quality goes down because of lost information, and at best you can only ever be as good as someone else.
>>
>>2897427
Drawing pictures based on images posted by OP was my idea of getting interaction and conversation going, you can't say I didn't tried.
>>
>>2897438
isn't that what people do here all the time though?
practice off another work or a picture?
>>
I get the sense that there are multiple ways to do a study for different reasons. Like, say I wanted to be able to make a cart or something, would it not be better to focus on the construction of that object as opposed to replicating it 1 for 1 with such anal measuring.

Then when you understand the underlying construction to it, you can go and do different studies in which you focus more on measuring accurately. Is this a fair assessment?

A Quick question

In one of Proko's videos he recommends using the overhand grip for drawing.

If I am using a tablet is it still best to use the overhand grip?

It seems like I would have to hold my hand at an extreme angle to have the pen read.
>>
>>2897467
It doesn't work on tablets. Tilt is too strong to register strokes fully.
>>
>>2897474

Thank you :)
>>
>>2897467
Why is it called overhand if it is under your hand
>>
>>2897505
y o u a r e s t u p i d
>>
>>2897508
The pencil is under your hand. You are gripping it under your hand. Why would you call it the overhand grip?
>>
>>2897505
Now instead of your hand and pencil being evenly on the paper, the pencil is directly in between the paper and your hand.
>>
>>2897511
What does this mean

And that's why I'm trying to improve and post my works here, dude.

>>2897427
I knew that such luck is far from normal!

>>2897407
You have different methods for doing that, but the easiest one is to draw a straight line from the center of the chin to the top of the eyes, copy it, and continue the original line with it. Alternately, if the hair is neat enough, you can draw the outlines of the skull, starting from the jaws. As you can see, in this case both lines meet at the same point. But the only use in this is understanding how much volume do you need to give the hair.

>>2897509
Because the hand covers it and is over the pencil?
>>
>>2897520
>Because the hand covers it and is over the pencil?
That would be the overpencil grip. Nothing is over the hand.
>>
>>2897520
ah ok. before I was just trying to guess the top and bottom of the head and everytime I guessed, the midpoint between them was like at the browline.

Starting from the chin to the eyes seems a bit better.

I also can't tell if there is a slight forward tilt to her head or not. Is there some method of being able to tell that as well?

One of proko's videos said to watch the relation of the ears to the browline but that probably works better with a real life picture.
>>
>>2897513
Now instead of your hand and pencil being evenly on the paper, the pencil is directly in between the paper and your hand.
>>
>>2897523
I see that we both aren't native speakers of English, are we? Well, my language sense is not that common, so let's take a look at dictionaries. And several of them do tell that this adverb means "with the hand over the object". I'd know better than to argue with those.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/overhand

>>2897532
Top of the ears to the browline is the most reliable method, yeah. If the tops are visibly over the browline, the head is tilted forward, and vice versa. Go watch your own face in the mirror and try to figure out what's possible to do if your ears aren't visible.
>>
>>2897539
Thats not the point. I know what the word means. You arent gripping it over your hand. It should be called the underhand grip or the overpencil grip
>>
>>2897544
And you still choose to completely ignore the definition stated in the dictionaries and copied into my post. Well, good luck on your path of thorns, then.
>>
Hey all, I can't seem to adapt to drawing on a tablet too well. Do I need to use certain settings? Or certain brushes? I feel like a dunce because I'm pretty ok when it comes to drawing on paper but I can't do anything digitally for my life.
>>
>>2897553
I said I know what the word means. It should be called the overpencil grip. Overhand doesn't make any sense.

It does make sense to me, though. Maybe you should go to some language forums, where they discuss etymology and all this uncertain shit, and ask if there are any Americans who are concerned with it too.

Got tips or tutorials for realistic coloring? Ive already read "Color and Light", maybe i should read it again. When painting i go from light and saturated to dark and unsaturated.

if you have money (or a cgpeers account) you can get The Laws of Color Vol 1 and 2 by Chris Legaspie.

I know Vol 1 is on there but I'm not sure on 2.
>>
>>2897583
that should be the opposite, dark to light.....unsat to sat.
>>
>>2897583
paint from real life before painting from imagination, it'll help tons. read "alla prima" regardless of medium but it's best for oil. the best tip is to squint your eyes to block out major shapes of colors.

mindless grinding is useless if you don't pair it with focused study. pick an aspect you're weak at and read about that, then draw more.

>>2897554
just keep at it, you'll get used to it in two weeks or less.
>>
>>2897593
Because I've not had a good drawing course in close to a year and have been slacking lately. I also need to finish loomis. I've only got about 2 years under my belt so I think that's reason enough to stay and keep learning the fundamentals.

Also, try to find an angle that feels comfortable to make lines with, if you'll stick with digital then that'll make doing lines a lot easier. You should just follow what the other anon said tho, draw on paper until you build the confidence

Yes, but there are some key differences you seem to not be getting.

Best subject is real life. As in: Real Life models, actual locations, real things, in real light, with real textures.

Learning from these means you can accurately reproduce subjects in a way that pretty much everyone will recognize and understand. From an accurate, true life rendering you and then pick and choose what to keep and what to change based on various aesthetic choices.

Second best subject is still life images of real life. Here the light source might be harder to recognize, the center of balance or direction of body weight in a model might be hard to recognize, or the image is an incomplete one like only a headshot or section of a landscape. These give incomplete information but are still better than anything but actual real life since the subjects depicted are still real, tangible things.

3rd best are mannequins. Digital, full size, standard wood desk doll, super detailed japanese weeb shit, whatever. These are still good because you can pretty much pose them however you want and also control the lighting. But they're not real life and you'll lack some fine details (unless you go super crazy and like make custom clothes and simulate wind and shit but whatevs).

Learning from finished, stylized, rendered works, with no instruction to go with them, is low grade. Especially if you're a beginner. Someone who, like the pic in question, can render things like that out already has enough in built shortcuts in their work that you're just chasing cars. The don't block out a body with forms or explicitly draw out a circle, then ball, then plane over the ball for the face, then etc etc. They've learned how to do that in a more streamlined manner that only works for them because that's how they've matured as an artist.

Learn from real life, or real images, then from other artists.

even if you get good, you'll never make anything worthwhile with a mindset like that thinking that has aesthetic value. go innawoods.
