>>2888327
thanks guys. no im not getting paid. i feel like if im gonna draw for money ill lose interest in that really quickly. here i have some, mostly sketches:
http://sladkiy-pirozhok.tumblr.com/
process is straght-forward:
roughly block-in silhouettes/big shapes in color (midtones) with no details (sometimes i block-in under low opacity sketch)
with soft brush create gradients on those blocks (need to decide which part will be lit by ambient light, which wont)
with hard brush create hard edges on top of it
on very top of it i draw lines to create contour or separate parts (like hair and skin on this image)
then im refining image, flip it, zoom out, searching for mistakes
then you can think about lighting setup (like add key light, or rim lights), you can do this with blending modes like multiply
and to finish a bit of blur and slight noise
>>2888326
as i mentioned before you need to block-in big shapes in color or grescale

I feel like there's a lot going on. Obviously the focus should be on the scene in the middle but my eye's jumping around from the boat to the field to what looks like a large lamppost. It's like there's no direction going from each of the corners of what's going on that it seems confusing.

fuck the dip pen. It sucks. Technology has advanced a 1000 years since its invention. There is a reason why we have new modern pens and not everyone is using dip pens to write shit and draw.

>1 brush / dip - by the time i was figuring out the brush I got bored and the bug was ruined
>2 mangaka 02 - not as good as sakura micron
>3 staedtler 0.3 - the clear winner, this thing had the craziest texture while drawing, and it was super fast
>4 rotring 03 - too fat, this thing sucked, and my drawing sucked so that didn't help

I might be wrong but most of the people that paint in a painterly way, I have noticed they understand form very well hence why they only need as few as possible strokes and values to convey a 3d feeling.

Try doing monochrome photo studies and aim to do the same, you will have the advantage to have a clear reference. You might also try to render as much as you need and become more frugal eventually.

A gynoid sketch I made from an animu face I made the other day.

hey guys
i'm working on a comic for art school application, thought i'd post it here, some crits would be appreciated.
>>
>>2891652
He's not wrong about needing to understand form. Nobody in my uni knows how to be painterly, or how to paint, because they all can't draw for shit.

I would recommend to not focus on painting at all at your level. Put as much effort as you can in becoming a strong draftsman. Study Bridgman & Vilppu to learn anatomy, study perspective and get good at informal perspective(intuitive) as well. If you can't draw and represent form accurately through drawing, low chance of you being able to paint it, and if somehow you could, you wouldn't understand it.
>>
>>2891714
Hmm... not the quoted anon but I'm drawing for almost 4 years and haven't gone into the painting stuff seriously yet, I was thinking it would improve my linework for some reason if I got into it.

Now I don't know what is what anymore.

>>
>>2891717
If you want to improve your linework, why don't you just develop a style similar to comics or manga? Study drawings more? Study Moebius, T.S. Sullivant, James Montgomery Flagg, Iain Mccaig, Otomo, etc. literally anyone good. Get into real traditional pen&ink with a nib, you'll learn a lot and develop some aesthetic taste in line.

However, if draftsmanship is what is really your problem, painting or drawing can both improve it. Is it really linework that is your problem, or is it your draftsmanship holding you back? A lot of asian digital painters create a clean and highly-understandable line drawing before laying down any digital paint, and they end up with very clean paintings this way. General draftsmanship ability should constantly be rising regardless of your medium just by focusing and not being complacent.
>>
>>2891892
Yeah, I meant being able to draw like pic related.

I don't know how quite well describe it, but his sketches convey so much form even though it's just some linework with almost no shading.

These are not final illustrations and not 100% accurate, in fact I bet /ic/ could spend all day pointing errors everyfuckingwhere, but I really wanted to know what to practice to learn the concepts of doing sketches so well. Those lines make me cum.
>>
>>2891929
Right? How does it do it? How does the artist convey form without rendering? Just lines! Insane!

line weight is the answer fagoli.
>>
>>2891962
That's like saying value change is the answer to convey form, I still have to grind 9000 hours until something clicks when I'm drawing.
>>
>>2891968
or you can read a book nigga.or study people.
but no seriously line weight indicates where form shadow should be . also heaft of form and so on, like if an object is heavy at a certain point that line would be darker, or if its on the outside it should be wider than interior lines of the form.
>>
>>2891929
The important thing for this kind of work is the subtle rhythm of the lines and the increase in line-weight where lines intersect.. If you miss the subtle flex/bends of the lines it is completely ruined. If you look at Yoh Yoshinari's sketches you'll see a similar thing occur, but in a different style.

The rhythm is what makes it believable. If you were to simplify the lines it would ruin this. A good, clean and meticulous face drawing is also important (but you draw the full figure before doing this, otherwise the head won't relate with the body). Eyes gotta be cash or you're fucked. You gotta be a fucking hard-ass on yourself with faces, flipping the canvas every minute or so, and focusing on the eyes to make sure they resemble each other strongly and are stylized beautifully.

This sort of style follows some principles of anatomy, but anatomical understanding is very much in service to what the artist finds to be an appealing and believable line. This applies as well to drapery and clothing. It's clearly based on how drapery tends to work but is slightly stylized.

The feeling of space occurs also because the characters are inhabiting a space with foreshortening and different directions of forms, as well as the particular placement of the important elements compositionally. Overlapping parts of the figure also helps this. Good drawing isn't enough if you want a drawing with really believable form, the particular arrangement can really influence if the drawing is just good or great.
>>
>>2891968
for instance notice in that post that the lines on the inside are thinner than those on the outside of the form? thats line weight. notice how her arm next to her head on left has a thick line and the hair has a thin line then the face has a thick line? that is line weight to delineate form. look for more examples.
>>
>>2891971
^also this is true as well.
>>
>>2891970
>like if an object is heavy at a certain point that line would be darker, or if its on the outside it should be wider than interior lines of the form.
Oh yeah, this was in draw a box and I think Loomis said this too.
>>
>>2891970
>>2891971
>>2891972
So, knowing that, I would not be retarded to assume if I study painting I could understand more about lineweight, right? I would be more used to knowing and calculating light and shadow areas, and all that fucked stuff.
>>
>>2891976
line weight is more of a drawing thing than a painting thing, that has to do more with edges.

Hey anon, how does one begin to get into the business of getting money from their art? Do you just draw you want now or are you drawing for something specific?
>>
>>2893243
I dunno, I just kind of drew whatever I wanted at the beginning. Stream to picarto/twitch. Get yourself on social media like twitter, tumblr or whatever. The more art you put out there the higher chance someone might come around, like your work and ask for a commission. I'm by no means popular or anything of sort so I'm not sure how seriously you can take my advice. If you want a more streamlined approach to quickly getting paid to draw, it's basically just an exercise in marketing, maybe drawing some niche stuff to get your name circulating in places. Of course drawing popular stuff too will get your name out there as well. I don't do this professionally though, so I just kind of draw whatever I want.

Now when it comes to selling at an artist alley or something, that's something completely different. Ideally you'd like to draw something you like that's also popular but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and draw something you know will sell versus something that you like but won't sell at all.

thanks a lot for taking time for all this!
i'll go through all the stuff you mentioned
so.. is the chaser being in the bg a bad thing? maybe i should flip that whole panel horizontally so the flow goes from the chaser to the protag?
the plant tentacle instead of the rock makes perfect sense, i'll make sure to change that, i was planning to place random rocks around on the ground but it makes much more sense this way
for the bouncing thing.. that stuff is supposed to be some kind of fruit, kinda soft, so i suppose it's not going to bounce away too much, maybe it would roll, but its shape doesnt really allow it to do that
the chaser is not very far from him to begin with so that fallig - grabbing the object - putting it back into his bag action is supposed to happen quickly, the chaser gets closer to him just a few meters, so he's just falling, then grabbing the stuff very quickly and continues to run away
the panel he's reaching for the fruit - it is out of scale indeed, the correct size would be size on the panels before and after, around the size that would fit in his hand. i'm aware that his face being misshapen, i'll need to fix that.
those things are not textboxes, i just broke up the bg there to get a more interesting look and break the monotonity of the uniform panels, is it a bad idea?
the conveyer belt is only supposed to change direction, not going steep, also, i'm planning on adding the main char running towards the hole into that panel.
the hole, are you refering to it being out of perspective or is the scene just unclear? the whole stuff is supposed to take place under some kind of transparent hemisphere which he exits through that hole
in the end, it's supposed to be a container, which he manages to grab and climb into

i've worked on the last ones, here's what i got so far

thanks again for the detailed critique!

It's generally too dark, you must push your values.
You seem to be aware of collarbones, the sternomastoid, and ribcage, so it's fantastic that you're aware of anatomy. Keep that up!
The hair is a goddamned mess but frankly I am not skilled enough in drawing to offer any substantial crit. Basically it looks like something flat you slapped on the drawing rather than a 3d form like the body is.
The extremely pointy titties and narrow eye are not appealing to me, but that may be a matter of preference rather than objective artistic critique, so idk.

I would recommend that you'd flip. Also, the protags face in the first panel looks very smug, not distressed.

With the guard established as to how far away from MC is on the first panel, I would imagine him gaining enough momentum to catch him after he fell over. The distance of the two seems unchanged in the other chase panel, so I'd either change the distance of the first panel between the two or make the guard comical like as he's struggling to getting caught up (facial expression is important here).

The "textbox" thing that I mentioned would look good with colors of the background or a tone of mood.

One the hole, I didn't figure how he slid out of it, since the size of it made unclear.

I just noticed that the container door was open, so I messed up the order of progress in my explanation (discard that purple outlining). I would however mention that the angle of that first panel doesn't clearly emphasize the escape route and the oncoming "end of the line" at the end of the belt. If you isolate the MC, the container door, and the belt end (see pic related), you'll get more weight of the right side of the panel due to the building contra where the MC slid down from. Can consider cutting some of it, but that is a large nickpick from my end.

Good luck.
>>
>>2893283
>>2895265
Scratch that last part with pic related. I noticed on panel 10 of the building, the conveyer belt continues in to the the factory building.
Panel 13, which is pic related had the belt ending, creating a continuity error.

eye pupils are supposed to go at the back not at the top/tip of the eyes! push them back!
hair should be more spherical not flat and bangs should follow a curve. keep in mind hair is the life of feminine characters (even feminine boys mind you)

I used another artists work as a reference. All my work looks 'stiff, autistic, life less'. I really can't do action very well because I lack skill to some extent but also because I'm dead inside.
>>
>>2895905
I'm not sure if it is jealousy, I just want to know if I'm witnessing witchcraft or if it is humanly possible to have 100% of my sketches look amazing - this has always been my goal, but it seems so far from being realized.

It's like this anon is posting pages out of an Imashi art book, and even then I wonder how many of imashi's sketches make it into that book? What is the sketch attrition rate?

You are trying and that's where the improvement comes anon. To fix your stiff poses I recommend you watch vilppu, after a few videos you'll be drawing less stiff figures

>How do I fix the face?
Your face is full of symbol drawing and you need to read loomis, practice a bit with the asaro head and watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg

The head is an important part of every figure drawing and it can make or break it so learning how to make it look good is important. Once you learn the basics of how to do it and proportion you can add animu on top of it if you want

Well thats what I posted, the layer that I turned off is essentially a wire mesh drawing containing a skull and dental cylinder. So before I render do I need to include some value or something so I dont get accused of symbol drawing? Because I am not just drawing symbols.

I appreciate you taking your time to help me out, I really do and thank you for that. I genuinely want to get better and I as I do improve it gets harder to see mistakes because they become smaller, where as the worse you are the easier it becomes to see problems.

>>
>>2897243
you're way too concerned with constructing the individual parts that you've forgotten to consider how the shapes look when they're together

you need to work more loosely from the beginning sketch stages; the goal there is to capture the flow and energy you want to convey, not necessarily accuracy.

right now you're trying to apply principles of proportion and perspective to an already stiff piece which is stiffening it up even more

it sucks but you should really reconsider and try again, one of the big parts of being an artist is being able to let go when something isn't working
>>
>>2895044

>>
>>2897243
The crit you've gotten is correct though. Listen to it you massive fag. Start over, draw the line of action first. Then build upon it. The pose just doesn't make any sense in its current form. Look at a bunch of references and look for the line of action if you don't know where to start

It's perfectly fine starting over and I know how shit it must feel to let go of something you wasted so much time on. But you must. Scrap that shit
