This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

by not drawing noses because noses are an ugly feature of human beings that easily gets fucked up and becomes unattractive

Can't tell if sarcasm, but after watching the video of those monks who just wipe away days of work's worth of sand art just to restart, I felt I should do the same since my drawings are shit to begin with so it's no loss.

I got into the habit of starting a new layer and redrawing the whole thing, even if I don't see anything wrong yet, just to see a difference. I don't recommend for illustrators though, this just has you practicing forms and construction over and over, more suitable for learning comic art where the lack of color makes proper form and linework more prominent.

all the people who answered are ding dongs, your only problem is composition, it's boring (too symmetrical; the forest to the left on the far ground isn't doing much either, not contributing to your focal point and a bit wanting if you're going for detail)

Play around with the lighting to make your focal point stand out, also tweak the foreground and background, the picture needs a lot more movement in general to keep the eye interested (via values and more interesting shapes).

Reference older manga. If you look at 50s era they will be fairly realistic. In the 60s and 70s they are usually large and stylised. They got small and stylised in 80s 90s. And then they got replaced by dots in mid 2000s.

But please don't disregard good construction because of my lack of skills.
Every line you take needs to consider it's placement in every coordinate; both the 2 of your canvas and the 3 of your stage. Construction's only purpose is to help you relate in terms of the stage. Construction is the best tool you have to place the 3 dimensional forms. Much love, please redline my drawings too~

How can you draw from inspiration if you're understanding of anatomy is totally off maybe start using your head a bit, drawing from a reference doesnt mean copying and pasting. It's more of gaining new techniques and ways how to draw these anatomical structures on a certain angle, everytime you draw from a reference you gain a new understanding of anatomy if you believe that inspiration will make your art anatomically look better please revisit your understanding.

>How can you draw from inspiration if you're understanding of anatomy is totally off maybe start using your head a bit,
Do you think people can become a billionaire by reading a 'guidebook' made by a billionaire? How about ten guidebooks, to make it sure?
Maybe you're the "Edison type" who sees inspiration unimportant and think it's all 99% hard work (c).

There is a difference between:
What they say.
What they think.
What they think they're doing.
What they say they do (which is actually what they think they do).
-and-
What they actually do.

You're the type to believe in someone else rather than yourself or put all your hopes in a guidebook as if it is the holy grail. Not the case if you have a mentor.

>drawing from a reference doesnt mean copying and pasting.
Of course but drawing a piece takes a lot of time especially when you're a beginner.
>It's more of gaining new techniques and ways how to draw these anatomical structures on a certain angle, everytime you draw from a reference you gain a new understanding of anatomy
Same can be achieved through o__________ alone plus it saves you time. In fact it is the root of all techniques. Cooking, gardening, you name it. If you're learning to cook by cooking everyday then you're gonna waste a hell lot of food. Same with traditional art and gardening (poor plants). Keep on o________ and inspiration will appear. What if it don't? Then it haven't. Ever heard of writer slump?

>if you believe that inspiration will make your art anatomically look better please revisit your understanding.
Inspiration is more complicated than what you think it is. Even a neural network of AI machine learning will never have the ability to learn from inspiration but have the ability to see anatomy and perspective through a camera. Not convinced? Can you compose music without inspiration? Maybe ask a jazz improviser if they don't need inspiration. You just need 1 percent of "it" :^) (c) to become a proud second-rate.

>Do you have study material on how to draw faces beyond construction?

I draw face according to my style. Remove construction for a while if it becomes constriction and focus on your longest developed style.
>>
>>2883649
Im not saying that inspiration isnt required in drawing the quite opposite im in aid with inspiration makes the process alot more fun and interesting. Im just saying that you wont magically learn anatomy by just "Inspiration". Yes inspiration makes this progress alot better. but you still need to know how does anatomy works the best way is attempting drawing from references. you learn by attempting. not inspiration.
>>
No, btw, who is wapspite ? I chose this hair style because it is the most simple. Her clothes are not that hard to draw....

First of all draw the entire figure even if you're gonna crop parts of the body later on.
Build form from simpler shapes before you go into detail, learn the main masses of the body and how they connect and move.

Question about drawing backgrounds like pic related (not mine). Is it actually fine to take a photo of a scene like that, put it as your background layer in Photoshop and just draw over it with some additional tweeks to make it look more colorful, etc.?

>>
>>2884192
Honestly backgrounds are just perspective and lightings, so don't be afraid of it. Photobashing is the worst. If you don't know how to make a good layout and you haven't mastered your values your photo bashed bg will look like shit anyway. For backgrounds you can get away with a lot of stylisation and simplification. So it doesn't even require a lot of work to get something going. You can do like mignola or frank miller and do all the impressive stuff in composition leaving big simplistic backgrounds. It will work for manga style too, don't worry, the perspective just have to be more emphasized.

as wonky as the anatomy is in this i actually love how insane you made the pose, it's got a really fun impossible flow to it, i bet (or at least i hope) you had a lotta fun drawing that. might i suggest adding some more lineweight variation to it if you plan to take it further? could really help add to the dynamicism and help direct the action/movement/flow through the piece more effectively

ooh also her left arm/hand/gun (our right) is a bit lost in the silhouette tho, i'd suggest trying to make it more towards the viewer/in perspective more or pointing it in such a way that the arm is able to be read more clearly

Getting a good understanding of color is as much about milage as any other creative skill. If you stop midway you'll never learn it. Make color studies and color thumbnails. Analyse other people's color use. There are a ton of easy techniques that are proven to work; learn them all. Follow tutorials. Once you know all the techniques read Color and Light by James Gurney to understand why the techniques work without depending on them.

Sounds like you haven't fully internalized stylization yet, especially something as heavily stylized as animu faces. Study your favorite artists and see how they go about it.

Yeah not to sound rude but I figured that on my own, I've been studying my favorite artists for weeks and trying to draw the curves as they do it but it never looks quite right.
I generally try to redraw the picture side by side instead of tracing over since I figured It wouldn't teach me anything if I just drew over it.

You're spending too much time trying to get something perfect. Not a good practice, especially when it comes down to getting a drawing done before anything else. You're being too dedicated on one small detail, normies aren't going to nickpick on something that subtle, as long as it works on your first glance than you're done, move on.

Learn to spend time learning as you go, and let mistakes happen. Time spend learning can be applied to training (e.g Loomis studies) while drawing to draw should be separate, independent going from said training.
>>
>>2885833
So, just let it be, really?
Well, how about just drawing with reference from other artists, wouldn't that also help just solve my problem along with trying to ignore it?
>>
>>2885720
not sure how to answer your question but the hand on the viewers right is backwards - thumb should face away from the body if upside down like that
>>
>>2885846
As long as you just don't worry too much about getting details beyond perfect. Just trying a bit more each time you draw something different is much more proactive than spending 20 days on one drawing. You gotta bite the bullet sometimes, especially if you're doing something for someone else via commission/request.

this is way too stiff imo, and her legs are waaay too big. Even for a stylized character. You went right till the crotch area. When you make a character don't go more than 7 heads and a half at most, usually people are 6-7 heads.
You can go as far as remove a whole head from her legs and it'll still look better.

>>
>>2886139
All day? Only one day? Usually you learn this stuff over weeks and months, anon.

Anyways, that feeling of missing something is always there because we're always learning even as masters continue to learn. We'll never reach perfection. Mind drawing something quick to show what you mean by "seeing" the cubes though? Usually the cubes keep you in perspective that way, you know which direction the body is facing then what planes correspond to the body.

This is the reason limbs, fingers and toes come first for me, it is not as easy

day 5 - tried to use a brush and a dip pen. It didn't go well... the two tools are polar opposites - will try again tomorrow

yuh - i went back to tabling instead of tableting

It's still in relatively early phase but I would like to hear some opinion on this because I lack environment work experience. Nevermind the ceiling though because that's the area I wish to fix tomorrow.

Would be better if you use less soft brush and more hard brush

Oh shut the fuck up not every abstracted nose is a tumblr nose i drew it like that because my nose is triangular and ive been self conscious about it being too big for a while. You're not even referring to the proper phenomenon and it's getting ridiculous you fucking sheep

lol. tumblr nose is what happens when you take something very cartoony like a significantly redder nose and cheeks and add it to a realistic looking face, thus creating a disconnect and looking "wrong." It certainly can work if the rest of the stylistic choices made enables it to work.
>>
>>2886735
No it isnt you dumb cunt
Its very specifically red and has no relation to being added to a realistic face
Post your art fucker
>>
>>2886730
you forgot to tan their whole skin, also markings and freckles. it's part of the tumblr artists traits.

k so nobody even knew that this was supposed to be a self-portrait until you brought that up but calm tf down bro
just don't draw it like a fucking block sitting on top of your face or else pic related. you are doing yourself a disservice.
>>
>>2886809

>>
>>2886880
apparently you do.
also if you're already self-conscious about your facial features, drawing yourself uglier probably isn't going to help. love urself anon

Lost a bet and had to draw something porny. The parameters of the bet also made me put far more time into it than I almost ever put into humanoid stuff (normally stick to monsters) so it was a good learning experience.

The woman is wearing some kind of liquid latex she can control, if that isn't obvious.
>>
>>2886568
Thanks f.am will fix it

>>2887035

you failed at that
>>
>>2887336
As in it isn't attractively drawn, or as in it isn't fully explicit? If the latter than yeah I guess porny is the wrong word. Erotic?

If it's unattractive is there a particular reason?

Then stylize differently. No one's going to think differently about your stuff if it's going to be half assed and without a soul.

does anyone have any tips or resources about simplifying bodies? Cartooning would be one word for it I guess.

I feel like I always over-construct things and throw way too much effort at things that should be simple

I think you're lighting your character from the front but the light is coming from the back. Maybe you could remove the light source from the back which would make your background darker and make the silhouette detach a bit more.
